They're efficient, pleasant to ride in and far cheaper than a tram network to set up or maintain. With new and improved battery technology, flexibility can be maximised and disruption mitigated.

Their hill-climbing ability is unmatched by the majority of public transit modes. Acceleration is better than diesel buses and energy from braking can be recovered.

A few days ago, The SunRail board approved a $6M environmental study for a Sunshine Corridor expansion with Brightline.

Notably, this is for the northern route alternative with a stop at the convention center and south I-drive. The other cheaper alternative of a route along SR417 with a stop only at Disney has seemingly been shelved.

This environmental study is the first step in the building process encompassing ROW design considerations, environmental effects, and crucially, securing federal funding.

No funding strategy announced yet, but it's safe to say a generous amount of federal grants will be necessary to get this built in any reasonable amount of time, which might be an issue with the current administration.

Here's my questions:

2. If funding could secured, would it be possible to rehabilitate or even rebuild the line in its entirety using modern engineering techniques to negate the hazards that plagued its previous incarnations?

3. What services could be provided to make the line economical, or even turn an actual profit? Obviously there's tourism, Carrizo Gorge attracts thousands of tourists a year (many of whom come to gawk at the ruins of the railway). I recently found out that the Mexican portion of the line is used to host the Tijuana-Tecate Tourist Train (pic related, several gallery cars that were originally intended for it but ultimately left unused) and has proven quite popular. But I'm also wondering industries could be served or even if a US-Mexico commuter service would be feasible (ignoring current diplomatic issues)

What do you think of modern bikes (and specially in "gravel"), the trend towards adding bags, in the handlebars, top tube etc, versus just throwing your shit in a backpack and calling it a day.

I can't say I like the looks of bikes with bags and all, but I do hate the lack of praticality of a bike with nothing on it at all. I dislike saddlebags as much as anyone else but I'll be damned if I ever leave the house without a spare tube.

The US Airways Flight 1549 'Miracle on the Hudson' was a great news day and Sullenberger warranted praise for DOING IT RIGHT, but I can't shake the feeling that in order not to 'sully' a good story, we've been bullshitted to and handwaved about Doreen Walsh opening the rear door allowing water to enter the cabin.

I can totally understand someone panicking under those circumstances, and also understand she was injured and otherwise traumatised by the water landing. Nobody would go that hard on her if she forgot her training and didn't look through the window before cracking the door.

What I can't abide is the possibility this bitch lied about checking for water as per her training, then "some passenger" pushing past her and cracking the door, along with some heroic story of fighting them off to try to close it again. There were witnesses who claimed otherwise:

I live in quite a busy inner city area of Sydney (Surry Hills) and I’m thinking of riding to work in the inner west, which is 23 mins ish. It’s quite busy and there are lots of cars about.

I wanna cycle to work because the transport in this city has gone to shit lately, and it’s expensive. I realise I could save on average about $30-$40 a week and that’s just travelling a few inner city suburbs.

I’m pretty vigilant but what are the risks? My biggest fear is being hit by a car or suffering a nasty injury. I’m a pretty good bike rider and wouldn’t zoom around like an idiot.

I realize there are a lot of /general/ bike threads right now but they have nearly reached capacity so I thought a thread of my own would get more attention.

This is currently the bike I own and use as a daily to go to the beach, get a coffee etc and I have done a few decent rides on it. It only has a few gears so when doing a somewhat longer rides (31m/50km+) it really starts to struggle. (I am aware its a cheap bike but I got it for free and made it work)

I want to buy a quality bike I can do some good rides on but I want to keep the vintage aesthetics and have new age tech on it. Can anybody recommend me any bikes which have these attributes? I would pay a few thousand but I don't want to be paying crazy money.

I've been riding a hybrid bike for my errands and short transportation within the city. However as I just learned to ride a bicycle this year I'm still a beginner and still having problems especially if there are lots of cars passing by. There are no protected bike lanes in my city and there are cases wherein I worry I might lose balance and a car or motorcycle might hit me.

So I'm thinking of getting a city bike like this Elops 120 to replace my hybrid bike since I read they are easier to balance and are more stable overall. They also have a bike rack and due to the upright position, more comfortable especially for a beginner rider like me.
However someone told me it would be better to just stick with my bike or get a mountain bike because I will outgrow a city bike after a year. Also my city is full of potholes and speedbumps that aren't comfortable with a city bike. Also there are steep inclines here that I won't be able to climb due to lower number of gears and also since it is a heavier bike overall. I also don't need to spend anything if I just stick to this bike.

All advice are appreciated.

He could have even pitched the aircraft into the Indian ocean after leaving radar range, yet WISPR data shows the aircraft flew for over 7 hours until it was ditched in an incredibly remote location.

The question which should be asked is what or who on board the flight to Beijing needed to disappear (and also be completely un-investigatable) why was a regular crash not sufficient to accomplish this goal, and who benefits from an unrecoverable aircraft accident?

I've been getting into the steelisreal, rim brakes are good enough side of youtube lately, and the clickbait has gotten me thinking about my next bike. How much truth do you think there is to these memes that say that high end steel isn't like the cheap shit I think of when I think of steel? I refuse to consider cantis and if I get disc steel I'm told that's no better than carbon because it's "overbuilt" at that point which "defeats the purpose". So it has to be dual pivot classic road frame made of thin walled fairy tubing, and no I will not elaborate because we all know why.

So it looks like if I'm not too hung up on getting a name brand duende meme bike I can probably pick up what looks like a pretty good steel frame for under $3k. Possibly even less. But then I'd really have to go with some pretty narrow, hard, puncture-prone tires, and I just don't have the energy for that shit. I haven't struggled with inner tubes and frame pumps in pelting ice cold rain by the side of the road in years and I like it that way, latex blood runs through my veins. But TPU was invented, and that's caused me to begin doubting my faith.

Would I be consumed with post-purchase rationalization if I fell for the steel meme? Are steel bikes and rim brakes the cast iron of bikes? Opinionated attention whores who need to have something to argue about at all times so they pick the most argumentative pointless crap that has a grain of truth that gets overemphasized at the expense of the big picture? Theoretically speaking, if I was an entrepreneuring billionaire and I wanted to bring back one of the great American passenger trains (Super Chief, California Zephyr, Panama Limited, Empire Builder, City of Los Angeles/San Francisco, 20th Century Limited, Broadway Limited, Powhatan Arrow, Coast Daylight, etc.) to run on a regular basis (let's put it at at least two times a month for a start), which option would be more feasible from an economic/technical/legal perspective?

1. Acquire all of the surviving rolling stock (sleepers, dining cars, dome/observation cars, baggage cars, etc.) from the original consist from private owners, heritage railways, and museums, as well as matching surviving locomotives (can be from ones different railroads since thousands of functionally and aesthetically identical EMD F and E units were sold to all Class I railroads). Renovate them as necessary to make them FRA-compliant, obtain waivers wherever possible. Put them into service as a part-luxury train, part-mobile museum.

2. Commission the construction of a replica consist. Building entirely new streamlined cars from scratch, designed to match the internal and external appearance of its original as much as possible, with changes only being made when it's literally required to make the car FRA-compliant/modern user friendly (updated wiring, HEP, power outlets at seats, WiFi support, replacing wooden paneling with MDF paneling etc.). Motive power consists of custom-built Siemens Chargers designed to resemble the original E and F units (streamlining, bulldog noses, matching paint schemes, etc.) as much as legally possible.
