
We should all love seeing nighthawks catch and eat flying insects on the wing in summer skies above buildings, treetops, and grasslands. They are a champion among the birds that consume mosquitoes with their wide, bristle-lined mouths adapted to easily scoop prey from the air, and long, pointed wings and tails for precision aerial maneuvering.
Other birds known to dine on mosquitoes include purple martins, Eastern bluebirds, red-eyed vireos, yellow warblers, downy woodpeckers, house wrens, Baltimore orioles, and hummingbirds.

The claim to fame for dragonflies in the fight against mosquito infestations is preventing mosquitoes from ever launching into the air. Mosquitoes lay eggs in bodies of standing water, and dragonfly larvae happily eat the mosquito larvae before they grow into adults. Dragonflies on the wing also eat adult mosquitoes. Awesome.

The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt is found in forested areas, living near fresh water streams, ponds, marshes, lakes, or beaver ponds. Insects are a mainstay of their diet and these newts help control mosquito populations from Nova Scotia south to Georgia and as far west as western Tennessee by eating mosquito eggs and larvae.

Studies have shown that juvenile freshwater turtles eat mosquito larvae. In one Louisiana study, researchers placed young red-eared slider turtles in roadside ditches filled with mosquito larvae. At the end of the study, the mosquito larvae population was reduced by 99%. Case closed, thanks to turtles!

Bats’ sonar-like means of hunting down their prey makes mosquitoes easy targets for bats to catch—and their appetite for mosquitoes is undeniable. A University of Wisconsin study found evidence of mosquito consumption in over 70 percent of the guano samples from little brown bats, suggesting that bats in their natural habitat eat far more mosquitoes than previously thought.

Dragonflies are like helicopters. Or I suppose it’s more accurate to say helicopters are like dragonflies as helicopters were designed to mimic dragonfly abilities. They can fly in any direction (up, down, forward, backward) or simply hover. All four wings move independently, and can rotate on an axis for incredible flight control. They can make hairpin turns mid-flight, changing direction instantly. Oh, and they can fly upside-down. No biggie.

A lion might only capture a quarter of the prey it pursues. A dragonfly, however, hunts with up to 95% accuracy! They calculate the velocity of prey to anticipate and make the perfect kill. I’m not a math wizard, but that means only about 5% of prey escape a dragonfly. Doesn’t sound promising for prey.

Dragonflies begin their life in the larval stage, as an aquatic nymph. A piece of their mouth extends out forward to snatch up prey. This video calls them out as the ‘sharks of the insect world’. Training is rigorous. Dragonflies spend up to 5 years in the larval stage, and only up to about 5 months as an adult.

“Why would someone leave their trash here?” my 7-year-old asked when we arrived, pointing to a plastic container in the water. We fished it out but decided quickly that the litter had a higher purpose: It was a tool for parent and child explorers.
My son was the designated scooper, repeatedly gathering cupfuls of water. Those that included aquatic critters left him gleeful. The tadpoles eluded us (too swift!), but we enjoyed close-up views of water striders and other wee creatures in our hour spent observing. One so fascinated us that we took it home to ID it: a damselfly nymph, according to the books and websites we referenced.
After returning the nymph to the stream to complete the aquatic portion of its life cycle, we paused to admire the adult damselflies and dragonflies as they perched and flew by, and we talked about the differences between them. We also promised each other we’d be back to explore another day—our hideout in plain view. The location isn’t safeguarded, but our memories are.
Fictional dragons are large compared to their fair maiden, or damsel, counterparts—and the same goes for these close cousins of the insect world.
We regularly see both types of odonates when we’re out and about. Do they visit your neighborhood too? I hope so. They’re lovely to behold.

The change of seasons is an important influence on animal behavior. Whether it’s the hot season turning cold or the dry season turning wet, wildlife has to adapt to survive. One strategy is migration. Songbirds, waterfowl, raptors and hummingbirds travel north and south each year, some as far as the tropics. Caribou and pronghorn shift their range based on the season to ensure access to food. Even insects such as monarch butterflies and green darner dragonflies travel great distances to survive the oncoming winter.
One of the greatest things about fall migration is that it offers some pretty awesome wildlife watching opportunities. Get outside this fall and see what migratory species you can spot. You can report your sightings on National Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife Watch website, on Twitter or even using your iPhone.
There’s no excuse to stay indoors and not experience wildlife this fall! In the meantime, watch this video about one of the species that has already begun migration, the ruby-throated hummingbird.
Monarch butterflies
Monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles each fall to a handful of sites in the mountains of Mexico, where millions of them will spend the next several months clustered in trees. There are so many butterflies that their weight sometimes breaks the tree branches. On warm days when the monarchs fly to sip water from puddles, you can actually hear the collective sound of their wings flapping (it
sounds kind of like deck of cards being shuffled).
You can help migrating monarchs by planting late-blooming nectar plants where the butterflies can refuel on their long journey.
Dragonflies
Green darners are large, common dragonflies found across the Unites States. Some are year-round residents but some are migratory and fly south in the fall. Dragonfly migration usually starts after at least two nights of cooler fall weather, which signals that a cold front is approaching which will push the insects south with its winds. Along the way, green darners are preyed on by kestrels, tiny hawks that time their migration to coincide with that of the dragonflies to ensure a steady food supply. Other migratory dragonfly species include the wandering glider, black saddlebags, and Carolina saddlebags.

Edible Fall Fruit
Pass the persimmon. How about the paw-paw? Now is the time to sample some wild fall fruits.
One summer evening, after doing a live radio show in downtown Philadelphia, my husband and I chatted with the show’s host on the sidewalk in front of the station building. It was 9 p.m. on a hot night and the traffic was whizzing by on this busy city street–no grass or plant life for blocks. Yet, as we chatted, I noticed a praying mantis on the side of the building. We were all surprised to see it.
On a September morning in Central Park in Manhattan, while doing a photo shoot for one of my books, I found myself surrounded by hundreds of common green darners (dragonflies). They were migrating right through the park! And at the intersection of 30th and Market Streets in Philadelphia, I spied a bald eagle soaring overhead! No kidding!
City streets, buildings, and parking lots act like heat collectors, making cities warmer than their surrounding areas. The warmer climate allows some species to thrive because they can bloom or lay their eggs earlier. We’ve all seen pigeons, gulls, and starlings in cities but have you noticed any peregrine falcons, red-tailed hawks, or cormorants? How about butterflies and moths, or rabbits and squirrels?

The next time you take your children to the city, notice the nature around you. If you live in an urban area, teach your children–and remind yourself–to observe the plants and animals you may not ordinarily notice.
