My friend came over recently and went to look at it.
As she enjoyed all the colours and lines, she said that, to her, each squiggle looked like a sketch-like figure drawing. The kind of quick impression you’d make to outline and interpret a form.
That surprised me and made me smile.
Because I don’t see that at all.
I see an excitable bunch of child-like seeds squealing. They are having fun – covered in colour and spreading it everywhere. The piece is a bundle of joy and play to me.
It fascinates me how we all see such different things in art. And how, frankly, we can all be so beautifully unique in this world.
And the bottlebrush plant and its seeds, wow, that’s beautifully unique. I can’t help sharing some more shots with you:

I wanted to fit in and I so obviously didn’t. I wanted to be liked, which seemed so hard. I remember looking in the mirror and knowing that deep down, I was not what I saw. But I’d known no different, I’d been the fat girl all my life.
It took a lot of determination to shed half my body weight. In a way it was my making; it gave me the confidence to know that I can do anything I set my mind to.

If you’d have met me 15 years ago, you’d have found a young girl who’d apparently made a ‘success’ of her life. I’d lost 140lbs and at 27 I was married, working for Microsoft and driving a BMW. But I’d just swapped chocolate for red wine, cigarettes and shopping. My heart would sink driving into the football-pitch-sized car park to face another week’s work. I knew I had so much more to give.
Changing this one was hard. I turned away from comfort, security, and the lure of money to go after a feeling that I didn’t even know I would find. Support was thin on the ground…every big player in my life thought I was mad.

If you’d have met me 10 years ago you’d have found a 30-something who was starting to feel alive. I’d ended my marriage, left the corporate world, taking a 50% pay cut and a job in a music charity in central London. I thought I was pointing in the right direction, and dreamed of having my own radio show.
But my body stepped in to show me the truth lending me 12 months out of society with a neck injury. Physical pain took me right back to my bones and I emerged from the darkest period of my life a changed woman.

If you’d have met me 5 years ago, I’d have shown you a whole new world: My boyfriend, Rob (the ‘unsuitable’ one, who is helping bring me home to myself) the business I’d built online by writing and sharing my story and my new home, Italy. And yet, somewhere in all this, I was doing what I thought I needed to, not following my deepest longings.
During the shake up that was needed to get me to let go of my coaching business and pick up a paintbrush, I felt as if my whole world was crashing down; consciously creating was what helped me build it up again, brick by brick.

And 5 years on you meet me now as an artist, a writer, a wife and a mother.
And yet as glorious these things are, I know there’s more.
Following self-fulfilment is like peeling away layers. There is always more.
The bodily pain I’m experiencing once again is here to guide me to the next stage of my life and I’m taking it by the hand.
Because I can feel the new space. It’s soft and feminine. There’s less doing, less ego, less striving. Here, rest is just as important as the act of creating and everything that ‘needs doing’ is way down the list. I’m slow, deliberate and drenched in trust.
I’m not sure how it’s going to happen. It seems far away from where I am now. But I can feel its beating heart desperate to get out.

Physical pain has come to meet me many times in my life and the last few days it’s here again. I’ve hurt my neck and shoulders.
Having had muscular-skeletal problems since I was a child, I know this could well be with me for many, many months. I’m hypermobile and when I break, I usually break bad.
But I also know that so often bouts of pain have had gems inside waiting for me. Life lessons that I just wouldn’t listen to otherwise; changes of course that were so very needed. Going through them I have become a little better, calmer, more me.
I don’t believe things happen for a reason…
But I do believe there is so much to learn from ‘negative’ things that happen in our lives.
The key for me is to stop fighting them.
To breathe, to accept and to love.
So I strive to make friends with the pain, to welcome the anger, frustration, sadness, disappointment and fear I feel. To sit with them at the table and to listen to what they have to teach.
And to treat myself gentle, kindly; with love.

Penzance is the most exposed place I’ve ever lived. We have such huge storms, many at night. What’s often more disconcerting than the storm though, is the eerie calm that settles in the morning after. All is quiet, everthing so still; it feels like even the air is sleeping.
I love to go out in this morning-after calm. It’s a relief that the world still there; that it’s a place where we can walk safely again. And there is so much gorgeous plant detrius littering the paths…my son, Gabriel, dances around finding goodies to fill his pockets.
It was one such morning that the two of us came across a large branch at the foot of a tree. Gabriel picked it up triumphantly – he wanted to wield it, to carry it home; it was his treasure!
I had never brought any branch so big into the house, but I couldn’t say no to my son’s enthusiasm, so home with us it went. Having just moved into a new, in-need-of-decoration place with no art on the walls, I strung it up on one of the many picture hooks dotted around.
And there it sat…
…for months.
I saw it every day. It was beautiful, all of it: the way the lichen embraced patches of its bark, the way the lines played with each other, the shadows that were cast on our wall. It became my treasure. I knew that I was falling for it; that I wanted to create with it…but I didn’t know what.
That not knowing was an uncomfortable feeling for me. I like having my ‘i’s dotted and my ‘t’s crossed. I am not used to having things hanging. But I let it be. I gave space for something unconscious to grow inside me.
And almost a year later, its time came. I was ready. I took it down and carried it to my studio.
Developing, had been the feeling that I wanted to adorn this branch with Mica, the naturally-occurring sparkly mineral. I mixed some into my home-made milk paint and started. The gold punctuated the deep bark colours; I felt as if I was honouring the branch, the tree, the storm as I painted.
And then I moved onto the cones, using four natural mica shades to bring them to life. The work was delicate, long and mesmerising.
I’d previously assumed I’d keep the branch as it was structurally, but once it was adorned, I felt there was a shape other than the one it had naturally that wanted to come out, though I wasn’t sure what. Sitting in that uncertaintly, I took a deep breath and cut the twigs with my secatuers.
The pile of branches sat on my studio floor for quite some time! I arranged and re-arranged. I kept going back to the idea of a circle, so I decided to make a template and place the branches on it.
Up until this point, all of my botanical work had been laid onto white. But the mica was lost with a light background, and placing it on an old piece of dark cotton I’d got from a charity shop, I decided a black background was the way I wanted to go.
The next challenge was how to attach it. I’d used natural glue in the past but I knew this wouldn’t work. In my piece 39, I’d experimented with copper wire, but I felt these twigs needed more flexibility. It was dawning on me that I was going to make my own fabric stretched canvas and then sew the branches in place. Both were things I had never done before.
I found a frame big enough, borrowed a friend’s serious stapler and learnt how to stretch material over a frame. I then laid out the structure of the branches on my canvas, found some black embroidery thread and started sewing.
And it came together!
Slowly, the piece, ‘Treasure’, emerged. I called it so when I thought of every step of its creation.
The storm was a treasure – it brought my son and I this branch.
The walk to discover it was a treasure – these moments of toddler-dom and motherhood, even though sometimes they feel interminable, will be so fleeting.
The year of waiting was a treasure – the patience, the trust and all the little moments of my life that played out alongside it.
The moments of uncertainty, they were treasures – my hand shaking slightly as I held the secateurs ready for my first cut into the branch; the hours of arranging and rearranging.
Doing something meticulous with love, that was a treasure – the calm, meditative moments transforming my days.
Nature, that is my constant treasure – reminding me every day of our beautiful world.
The process of creating this piece reaffirmed to me that I am deeply blessed.
And every day, if I can consciously direct my attention to that blessing, I’ll realise in joyous moments, just how much treasure is all around me.
]]>So, to make it easy for people who want to paint more ‘greenly’ and to share my passion, I decided to make a Natural Paint Starter Kit!
This way, you can dip your toes (or, more accurately, your fingers!) in the world of painting naturally, with my experience as a guide.
Here’s the kit:
It includes:
– Five non-toxic natural pigments – yellow, blue, green, red and burgundy
– Milk-based binder in the form of casein and borax powder
– Full instructions on how to make the binder, prepare the natural pigments and mix the paint.
– Tips and tricks for your practice
Some interesting facts about the kit and ingredients:
– The pigments are non-toxic and made from elements found naturally.
– The binder is made of casein and borax, and is water-soluable, which is beneficial for both flexibility when applying and ease of clean up. Casein is the protein found in milk. Borax is more commonly known as the mineral Boron, which some people use to supplement their diet. Toxnet studies have shown it to have a similiar profile to baking soda and salt. It is not carcinogenic, it doesn’t penetrate the skin well and neither does it build up in the body.
– At every stage of putting together the kit I wanted it to have the smallest realistic environmental footprint. The pigments are housed in recycled plastic containers (please reuse and recycle them) and the packaging is made of recycled card, including old cereal boxes.
– The label on the front was made using the exact pigments you’ll find inside.
– Once you’ve made the binder, it’ll last up to 6 weeks in the fridge and with it you can make up to 300ml of natural paint.

My first Natural Paint Workshop, held in Penzance recently, was a great success. 13 enthusiastic creatives joined me to explore the world of natural pigments along with egg and milk paint.

It’s been such a busy few months. And it’s made me think again about my priorities for the coming year. Logistics aren’t something I revel in, and having created these three very practical things over the last few months, I am yearning to spend more time creating – whether that’s with my writing or my art. I have some very exciting (and quite scary) ideas for the coming year which I’ll be sharing honestly as they unfold.
