]]>“God draws unto Himself everyone who is willing and guides unto Himself everyone who turns unto Him.” (Surah 42:13).
December 25th is the day that many Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ (Sayyedina Eesa). While it is not the likely birth date of Jesus, celebrating a birthday is an act of honoring and valuing the person being celebrated, expressing love and appreciation for the individual and the impact he or she has upon our lives. In light of this, it may benefit us to probe more deeply into what it means to celebrate the existence and the impact that the Prophets of God have had upon humanity and upon us.
In The Quran, Jesus is known as one of the greatest prophets of humanity and among the “Ulul Azm” or the five greatest prophets along with Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa and Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon them all). Addressing Prophet Muhammad, Allah states in the Quran that He (Allah) has enjoined upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that which He has enjoined upon Prophet Nuh, Abraham, Moses and Jesus and that all of the messengers came to teach the One Religion- that is God’s True Religion-the Deen Al-Haqq and to establish this religion and not be divided therein (Surah 42:13).
From God’s perspective, all of the messengers are of one spiritual family and we are tasked as Muslims not to distinguish between them and to do our best to love them equally. Can we possibly conclude from this that honoring the birth event of one of the greatest Prophets of humanity violates the teachings of the Quran?
“And in Whatever you Differ O Believers, the Verdict Rests Upon God.” (Surah 42:10)

]]>Jonathan’s apology deserves applause and gratitude. As the Executive and Spiritual Director of Cordoba House, I have experienced first-hand the dehumanizing effects of racism and injustice on our community and its crippling effects on social inclusion.
Ten years later, we continue to battle radical attitudes and hatred that have shamefully plagued our nation and our dream of the envisioned project remains unrealized. Despite the setback, we remain steadfast in our commitment to energize a multitude of believers around the vision of Cordoba House that was imagined by Imam Feisal Rauf more than 20 years ago – as a multi-religious center for worship, cultural and intellectual exchange.
In response to Jonathan’s op-ed, it is now our conviction at Cordoba House that the Jewish, Muslim, and other communities of faith need to engage in a sincere and honest process of self-examination, purification, and pursuit of social justice for all. And just like in Teshuvah, true repentance (Tawbah Nusooha) in Islam is not just an individual effort at self-examination and purification but also a collective effort by the community at large. The Quran states: “Surely Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change their inner selves” (13:11).
The 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks is a moment of reminder of the importance of such an engagement. We owe it to our country and to the global community to strive together and pave the way for a more compassionate and enlightened human community.
