The Duke is back. Again.

I’m not sure what to say about this.

Duke Nukem 3D was a monster hit when it released in the ’90s. The game has been ported to almost as many platforms as Doom has, and retains a mighty following even now.

That fanbase wasn’t diminished all that much, even in the face of the bomb that was Duke Nukem Forever. If you somehow don’t recall, that was the last game that the Duke starred in. It was a monumental critical and retail flop, and didn’t exactly succeed in booting the main man back up for a new generation.

That’s one of the reasons I’m a little perplexed by this movie effort. It seems like Duke’s not all that viable these days. Presence aside, another issue is the hyper-sensitive, PC culture we’re currently in the midst of. Duke is the explosive opposite of that, so it’ll be interesting to see how he’s handled on-screen. If he’s toned down too much, then that aforementioned fanbase might not be all that enthused.

But regardless of all that, we have this week’s news.

The Hollywood reporter is… reporting that Paramount and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production house has been talking with John Cena about Duke. Cena is a professional wrestler and was a huge presence in the WWE.

Though he’s still around there, he’s been working on an acting career as well. Actually, speaking of Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Cena will appear in the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. Bay is involved with the Transformers movie universe in a very big way of course.

So it kind of makes sense that he’d be talking with Cena about Duke Nukem since they already have a working relationship. And, let’s be honest, Cena does kind of look the part. I mean, Duke sort of has to be a big jacked up guy. It’s kind of his gimmick. Well, that and the whole “not PC” thing.

Transform and roll out

The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth.  Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock).

There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference.  In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes.  Heroes will become villains.  Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.

So Paramount and director Michael Bay are going big on turning the Transformers franchise on its head. Like, really big apparently since there’s quite a bit here to read things into. It definitely looks as though Prime is a villain in the film, or at the very least, acting against the Autobots. And it also seems as though there’s something big moving into Earth orbit.

Whether or not that means Unicron or not is up in the air. I have my own theories, but for now all we know for sure is that the series probably won’t be the same after this one. Depending on your feelings about the direction of the Transformers movie universe, that could be a very good thing.

Of course there’s also the possibility that we’re headed for an ending to this series and hard reboot too, since there’s still that Hasbro film universe on the horizon. That seems relatively unlikely since the series makes boat-loads of money.

And anyway, even if that is to happen, that’s all in the future. Transformers: The Last Knight is happening this summer. Catch it in theaters on June 23rd.

Not a whole ton to complain about there. Even as someone who wasn’t crazy about the first film in the new franchise from Michael Bay, I have to say that director Dave Green looks like he might have something pretty nice on the boards for this sequel.

The feel is the same as that initial movie, which I still think is solid, but now we’ve got Rocksteady and Bebop, a Shredder that looks and (apparently) acts a lot more like Shredder should, and Kraang as well, all of which equals up to a bunch of stuff that TMNT fans have wanted to see on the silver screen every since the first live-action movie way back in 1990.

Cross your fingers for a halfway decent story, and I think we may finally have something here. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens in theaters on June 3rd.

So, lemme get this straight, not only are we getting a fantastic-looking version of Bebop and Rocksteady, but we’re also getting the original cartoon version of Krang and maybe even the Technodrome? And just like that, I pretty much need to see TMNT2 when it hits theaters this year.

We already showed you the gruesome twosome of Bebop and Rocksteady in that awesome first trailer for the film, but now thanks to Playmates Toys, we can also direct you to some images of what that lil’ alien brain/thing Krang will look like on the big screen.

Sort of confirmed by Michael Bay the other day, Krang looks like he’ll have his android body and an extremely faithful look to the original cartoon series. You can check out the images of the action figure version of him here on ComicBookResources.

It looks like there’ll be only one Krang in this version of the Turtles saga, though the villain has been turned into a whole race called ‘the Kraang’ in the new Nickelodeon cartoon. I honestly think I like the newer version better, though as a sheer piece of nostalgia, you can’t beat the original. Hopefully he’ll be as verbally abusive towards Bebop, Rocksteady, and the Foot Clan in general as he was in the show.

Oh, and then after you spot the main brain himself, you might wanna scroll a bit down the page and get to that Technodrome. Well, I think that’s what it is at least, as there’s no descriptive text anywhere. Look, it’s big, metal, round, and Krang is inside it at some kind of control hub, so you tell me what it might be!

Personally, this movie just jumped up near the top of my list for this year, how about you?

So here’s where I am right now – I still don’t love the look of the TMNT, but everything else is a home run in this trailer. And yes, I know that the original film looked pretty good too (again, other than the Turtles themselves), and yet I can’t help but get a little overly excited.

I mean, Bebop and Rocksteady look spot on, Baxter Stockman seems as loony as ever, Shredder is acting a heck of a lot more like Shredder and seems to have more screen-time… and I’m crossing my fingers that that portal at the beginning is a rift to Dimension X.

What can I say, I’m a big fan and I’m buying in… for now. TMNT2 lands in theaters on June 3rd, 2016.

A buddy of mine watched this (both of us are huge TMNT fans from the days of the original cartoons when we were kids) and his first comment was that it didn’t look bad and the tone seemed right. Unlike director Bay’s (repeated) stabs at the Transformers, I have to happily agree.

I honestly had thought this flick was going to be a lost cause, but (from the teaser anyway) it looks like Bay nailed the feel of the TMNT stories that made the brand so huge years ago and still is today with the new cartoon on Nickelodeon. Mikey was pretty much Mikey in the clip and the rest of the gang looked great, proving that the new designs actually work quite well on film.

If you’ve seen any of the promo shots of the Shredder armor, than you already know he looks pretty awesome all suited up too, even though all we got was a brief sneak peek at his suit this time around. It’s kind of a neat idea too to have Shredder linked to the creation of the fab four, my only wonder here is just where Splinter is.

We haven’t seen any of him in any of the promotional material (unless I missed something) and it certainly wouldn’t be the TMNT without him. Hopefully he’s on the way too, because I like what I’m seeing so far. I’m also a little concerned that the film will become the April O’Neill show. Bay had made the Transformers movies way too much about the humans and of course there’s a chance he’ll do that again here with Fox’ O’Neill. Although, if that was the route he and the studio went down, it’d be significantly less out of place (since April had a massive part in pretty much all areas of TMNT lore), I do hope her keep s the majority of the story centered on the teens in green.

As for when you can expect to see the Turtles back on the big screen, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return to the big stage on May 16th from Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon Movies.
