Dear Community,
What a month! We’ve been bringing capoeira beyond the walls of our school in a major way, and it’s inspiring to see our community continue to grow, connect, and share this art with new audiences.
On July 5, we had the incredible honor of performing the halftime show during the Golden State Warriors vs. San Antonio Spurs game at Chase Center—our largest audience ever. We are deeply grateful to board member and longtime student Professora Sucurí, whose tireless work made this opportunity possible. And rumor has it we will be performing at halftime again in the future.
Thank you to every student, teacher, musician, volunteer, family member, and friend who helped bring the performance to life, and to everyone who filled the stands and cheered us on. It was an unforgettable opportunity to introduce thousands of people to the beauty, energy, history, and cultural richness of capoeira.
Just two weeks later, we returned to one of our favorite neighborhood traditions: Sunday Streets. Thank you to everyone who joined our roda and helped transform a San Francisco street into a vibrant space for music, movement, and community. See videos of our roda here.
Moments like these allow us to share capoeira with people who may be experiencing it for the very first time while reminding our neighbors that this vibrant Afro-Brazilian tradition has a home right here in San Francisco.
On that note, we’d love to welcome even more newcomers into our community. This Tuesday, August 4, we’ll host our third monthly Try Capoeira Taco Tuesday, where beginners train for free before we all head out for tacos together! A special thank you to Graduada Rainha and Aluna Água de Côco for leading this wonderful community initiative. July also took Mestra Márcia to Puebla, Mexico, where along with Mestre Piriquito, Mestranda Yara e Mestrando Côco and other guests from Brazil and abroad, she was taught classes and presided over ceremonies at the Jogos Mexicanos, including a beautiful batizado. It is always inspiring to witness the continued growth of the global ABADÁ community and to strengthen the connections that unite us across borders.
As we look ahead, we’re excited for everything the coming months will bring—from new outreach efforts and school partnerships to performances, classes, and community events. Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we’re preserving and sharing the rich traditions of capoeira, creating opportunities for the next generation, and ensuring this extraordinary art continues to thrive for years to come.
