New Study on Virgin Coconut Oil and Diabetes

A very promising study was published a few weeks ago (June, 2026) in the journal Food Science & Nutrition, and the research was conducted in China.

The study specifically was targeting “diabetic kidney disease” (DKD), which is a huge problem in today’s modern culture.

The title of the study is:

Virgin Coconut Oil Attenuates Diabetic Kidney Disease via Gut Microbiota‐Metabolism‐Inflammation Axis Modulation in Type 2 Diabetic Mice

ABSTRACT

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) poses a significant global health challenge, necessitating novel therapeutic interventions. Virgin coconut oil (CO), rich in medium‐chain fatty acids (MCFAs), has emerging metabolic benefits, but its renoprotective potential and mechanistic basis remain unexplored.

This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of CO on DKD and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms through a multimodal approach. Network pharmacology and molecular docking were employed to predict CO’s bioactive targets and pathways.

Experimental validation was performed in a high‐fat diet/streptozotocin‐induced type 2 diabetic mouse model, with CO administered for 12 weeks. Systemic metabolic parameters (glucose, BUN, Scr, lipid profiles) and renal function were evaluated.

Renal histopathology (H&E, Masson staining), inflammatory markers (TNF‐α, IL‐6), oxidative stress indicators (GSH‐Px, SOD, MDA), and fibrosis markers (TGF‐β, Collagen IV) were quantified.

Gut microbiota composition (16S rRNA sequencing) and serum metabolomic profiling (LC–MS) were analyzed to identify systemic mechanisms. Computational analysis identified octanoic acid and decanoic acid of MCFAs as principal bioactive components targeting PPARα/γ and IL‐1β, modulating PPAR signaling and oxidative phosphorylation.

In vivo, CO significantly ameliorated hyperglycemia, reduced uremic toxins, and improved lipid metabolism. Renal benefits included attenuated inflammation, restored redox balance, and suppressed fibrosis.

Gut microbiota restructuring revealed decreased pro‐inflammatory Enterococcus and enriched probiotic Lactobacillus.

Metabolomics identified CO‐mediated regulation of arachidonic acid metabolism and riboflavin pathways.

Our findings demonstrate that CO exerts comprehensive renoprotection through a novel “gut microbiota‐metabolism‐inflammation” axis, suggesting its potential as a dietary intervention for DKD. These mechanistic insights warrant further clinical investigation of CO’s therapeutic applications in diabetic complications.

New Study on Virgin Coconut Oil and Weight Loss

A very interesting study was published earlier this year (2026) in the journal “Molecular Biological Reports“.

The study examined “Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)” which regulates feeding behavior, and it focused on people suffering from “Chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption” (excessive alcoholic beverages).

The study is titled:

Neurotrophic and metabolic consequences of virgin coconut oil and ethanol: implications for growth and antioxidant defense

Abstract

The hypothalamus serves as a central regulator of metabolism, integrating signals pertinent to food intake and energy balance.

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is widely distributed in brain, including expression in hypothalamic nuclei, which regulates feeding behavior.

Chronic ethanol (EtOH) consumption has adverse effects on metabolic function, affecting the hypothalamus and striatum, a reward-associated region.

Virgin coconut oil (VCO), a dietary lipid rich in medium-chain triglycerides, which have been shown to modulate BDNF expression. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that chronic EtOH consumption would impair metabolic regulation and causes oxidative stress, while VCO would counteract these effects.

To test this, water drinking control and EtOH drinking Wistar male rats received water as vehicle or VCO by gavage (12 days). Growth, diet and fluid consumption were recorded throughout the experiment.

Hypothalamic BDNF, striatal oxidative stress, and serum metabolic markers following EtOH and VCO exposure were examined. Statistical analysis utilized t-test, two-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test.

Findings revealed that VCO reduced hypothalamic BDNF, decreased food and food caloric intake, and led to weight loss in EtOH exposed rats.

Metabolic effects were further modulated by alterations in serum glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides, where EtOH lowered glucose and cholesterol due to reduced caloric intake, while VCO increased all three markers.

Additionally, VCO restored oxidative stress markers in the striatum, potentially mitigating EtOH- induced neurotoxicity by normalizing catalase and peroxide levels.

This study highlights the complex interaction between EtOH and VCO in metabolic regulation, oxidative stress, and neuroendocrine function, warranting further research to explore its potential therapeutic implications.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the death of dopaminergic neurons, mitochondrial damage, and increased oxidative stress. Nutritional approaches have garnered attention as adjunctive therapeutic strategies.

Recent findings: The natural products of coconut, including coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water, and coconut kernel, are rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and other essential minerals, which can have neuroprotective effects. Consequently, nutrients obtained from coconut products represent promising natural neuroprotective agents for the prevention and management of PD. Neuroprotective role of coconut oil for the prevention and treatment of Parkinson’s disease: potential mechanisms of action

Abstract

Neurodegenerative disease (ND) is a clinical condition in which neurons degenerate with a consequent loss of functions in the affected brain region. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most progressive ND after Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which affects the motor system and is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons from the nigrostriatal pathway in the midbrain, leading to bradykinesia, rigidity, resting tremor, postural instability and non-motor symptoms such as cognitive declines, psychiatric disturbances, autonomic failures, sleep difficulties, and pain syndrome.

Coconut oil (CO) is an edible oil obtained from the meat of Cocos nucifera fruit that belongs to the palm family and contains 92% saturated fatty acids. CO has been shown to mediate oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis and excitotoxicity-induced effects in PD in various in vitro and in vivo models as a multi-target bioagent. CO intake through diet has also been linked to a decreased incidence of PD in people.

During digestion, CO is broken down into smaller molecules, like ketone bodies (KBs). The KBs then penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and are used as a source of energy its ability to cross BBB made this an important class of natural remedies for the treatment of ND.

The current review describes the probable neuroprotective potential pathways of CO in PD, either prophylactic or therapeutic. In addition, we briefly addressed the important pathogenic pathways that might be considered to investigate the possible use of CO in neurodegeneration such as AD and PD.

This is dangerous information to those who make a living on producing and selling oral care products and drugs to treat oral diseases, because as a natural product, coconut oil cannot be patented.

The latest study comes out of Spain and is published in the journal BMC Oral Health regarding periodontitis:

Clinical efficacy and patient-reported outcomes of coconut oil as adjunctive periodontitis treatment: triple-blinded pilot randomized trial

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is a prevalent chronic disease commonly managed with nonsurgical therapy and adjunctive antimicrobial rinses, though their side effects can hinder long-term use. Coconut oil has emerged as a potential natural alternative due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and patient-reported outcomes of periodontal patients treated with nonsurgical therapy with or without coconut oil as an adjunctive method.

Methods: Thirty participants with stage II-III periodontitis were randomly assigned to three groups: coconut oil, 0.12% chlorhexidine, and placebo (coconut-flavored water) mouth rinse for one month, followed by nonsurgical periodontal therapy. A blinded examiner assessed the plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, saliva pH, tooth color, sulfur compounds in breath, and patient-reported outcomes, including the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 before starting the use of mouth rinse (T1), one month after starting the mouth rinse (T2) and one month after nonsurgical periodontal therapy (T3).

Results: Compared with the placebo, both coconut oil and chlorhexidine significantly reduced the plaque index at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.006), bleeding on probing at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.001) and T3 (p = 0.006; p = 0.009), probing depth at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.001), clinical attachment level at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.015) and sulfur compounds at T2(p = 0.045; p = 0.003). Compared with chlorhexidine, coconut oil was more effective at decreasing clinical attachment loss at T2 (p = 0.006). At T2, chlorhexidine was associated with increased burning sensation (p = 0.03) and color changes (p < 0.001), whereas coconut oil reduced the degree of mouth dryness perception (p < 0.001). Coconut oil and chlorhexidine improved breath perception (p = 0.003; p = 0.030). Patients preferred the placebo over coconut oil or chlorhexidine (p = 0.006; p = 0.015). The quality of life significantly improved in the coconut oil group at T2 (p = 0.024).

Conclusions: Compared with placebo, coconut oil and chlorhexidine improved periodontal parameters. However, coconut oil reduces mouth dryness and improves quality of life without the adverse effects associated with chlorhexidine.

If the U.S. Government all of a sudden admitted that there is no scientific basis that saturated fats and cholesterol are harmful, it would open the floodgate of lawsuits from so many people who have suffered harm from this dietary advice for more than 45 years now.

Butter Is Not Back: The Broken Promise on Saturated Fats

Despite months of pledges to “end the war on saturated fat,” the 10% cap in the updated US Dietary Guidelines will remain—creating a contradictory document.

Delayed for months, the highly anticipated new U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans will be released to the public tomorrow, followed by a large (invite-only) event at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Thursday.

The one widely touted reform was an “end to the war on saturated fat,” as both HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary have repeatedly pledged since taking office—including as recently as Nov 27th.

This was a revolutionary proposal. The cap on saturated fats has been a bedrock piece of advice since the launch of this policy in 1980, and it is why so many Americans avoid red meat, drink skim milk, and opt to cook with seed oils over butter.

Yet I learned from two administration officials that saturated fats will not be liberated after all.

The longstanding 10% of calories cap on these fats will remain.

At the same time, the guidelines’ language will encourage cooking with “butter” and “tallow,” both of which are high in saturated fat.

The 10% cap means approximately 20-22 grams of saturated fat daily for the average 2,000-calorie diet. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

• 1 cup whole-fat yogurt for breakfast: ~5 grams

• 1 chicken thigh with skin, cooked in 1 tablespoon butter for dinner: ~12 grams

Total: ~17 grams of saturated fat

That’s nearly your entire day’s allowance in just two modest meals—no cheese, no butter on your vegetables. Add a splash of cream in your coffee and you’re over the limit.

Or consider another day:

• 2 eggs cooked in 1 tablespoon of butter: ~13 grams

• 4 oz ribeye steak: ~6 grams

• Broccoli with 1 tablespoon butter: ~7 grams

Total: ~26 grams of saturated fat

Already over the limit—and you’ve only eaten two meals. Anyone actually following the 10% cap will need to continue cooking with seed oils while limiting whole milk, cheese, and red meat.

Butter is not back. Steak is not back. Tallow will not be on the menu anytime soon—at least not for anyone trying to follow federal nutrition advice. (Full Article.)

The one food source with the highest amount saturated fats, of course, is coconut oil. Coconut oil is over 90% saturated fats, so according to the USDA dietary guidelines, you should not eat more than about a tablespoon of coconut oil a day.

The problem with that is that most people see therapeutic results by eating more than 3 tablespoons a day of coconut oil, and some people suffering from Alzheimer’s and other neurological diseases consume 2-3 times that, with some Alzheimer’s patients seeing a remission and a regaining of their memories.

I was the first one in the U.S. to re-introduce coconut oil into the American diet, with our Virgin Coconut Oil made by hand in the Philippines back in 2001.

The customer testimonials were amazing, and sales of our Virgin Coconut Oil were rapidly increasing, taking market share away from the seed oil producers selling soybean and corn oil, two oils that were not traditionally in the human diet prior to WW II and the development of expeller-pressed oils.

So the FDA came after us, threatening to shut us down. These “new” dietary guidelines on fats are still claiming that there is not enough research on saturated fats to claim they are healthy! But myself and many others have been publishing this research for over 2 decades now!

Sadly, the U.S. Government’s nutritional advice on saturated fats has still not changed. And while Kennedy himself promotes saturated fats, the U.S. dietary guidelines are what will be followed in any federally-funded food programs, which affects about 25% of the population, as Nina Teicholz explains:

…. the roughly 30 million children eating school lunches daily, plus military personnel, and the vulnerable populations—elderly and poor Americans—who receive food through federal programs, roughly 1 in 4 Americans each week.

These programs are required by law to follow the Dietary Guidelines.

For them, the numerical cap will trump any contrary language about butter and tallow. Cafeteria managers and program administrators will continue to adhere to the 10% limit, because that’s what the law requires.

For these captive populations, seed oils will remain the mandated cooking fat. The encouraging words about butter and tallow will essentially be meaningless. (Source.)

Virgin Coconut Oil and Its Lauric Acid, Between Anticancer Activity and Modulation of Chemotherapy Toxicity: A Review

Abstract

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has emerged as a functional food oil with considerable health benefits and wide applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries due to its resident bioactive compounds, including lauric acid (LA). LA is the most abundant saturated medium-chain fatty acid in VCO and has been associated with several pharmacological activities.

The literatures show the pharmacological effects of VCO and LA on chronic pathologies, infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders. A robust body of evidence shows that LA and other phenolic compounds are responsible for the VCO protection against toxicities and pharmacological efficacies.

This review elucidates the anticancer mechanisms of VCO/LA and their modulation of the chemotherapy-induced side effect toxicity. VCO, LA, and their nanomaterial/encapsulated derivatives promote ROS generation, antiproliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, the inhibition of metastasis, and the modulation of cancer-related signaling pathways for cancer cell death in vivo and in vitro.

VCO mitigates oxidative inflammation and apoptosis to block the underlying mechanisms of the side effect toxicity of chemotherapy. However, the possible beneficial effect of LA on the toxicity of chemotherapy is currently unknown.

The available evidence emphasizes the anticancer effect and mechanism of VCO and LA, and the VCO potential to combat adverse side effects of chemotherapy. Thus, VCO and LA are potential adjuvant therapeutic agents in the management of various cancers.

Nevertheless, future studies should be targeted at elucidating cancer-related molecular mechanisms to bridge the gap in knowledge.

Introduction

Cancer continues to pose a significant global health challenge with increasing prevalence despite the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of more than 600 cytotoxic anticancer agents [1].

Chemotherapy is the clinical cornerstone for metastatic cancer treatment globally. It is acknowledged for systemic efficacy, patient improvement, and survival; however, it is increasingly confronted with severe side effects, chemoresistance, and relapses [2,3].

These formidable hurdles hamper clinical chemotherapy effectiveness; therefore, there is an unmet need for alternative therapies, adjuvants, or combination regimens to combat the growing health problem [4].

In this pursuit, there is a growing research interest in exploring the potential therapeutic benefits of natural products for cancer treatment. The multi-target novel adjuvants or treatment agents based on natural products with higher anticancer potency and low toxicity profiles are required for the treatment of cancers [4,5].

Some plant-derived natural products have shown potential anticancer potential in combination therapies, though safety and efficacy must be assessed case by case [6].

Among these potential products is VCO gradually emerging as a potential candidate due to its potential anticancer properties and ability to mitigate the toxicity associated with chemotherapy [7,8].

VCO is extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconuts and has been recognized for its diverse health benefits [9]. There is a growing demand for VCO in the United Sates and other developed countries, and this demand can be attributed to the increasing number of reports and scientific literature published on the health benefits of VCO [10].

The quantity of VCO exported by India, Philippines, Indonesia, West Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Papua New Guinea, the major countries involved in the large production of VCO, has increased over the years [10,11,12].

The literature has shown the analgesic, immunomodulatory, antipyretic, antioxidant, anti-stress, antimicrobial, anti-HIV, antidiabetic, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, hypocholesterolemia, and anticancer effects of VCO [11,13,14].

A number of studies have also demonstrated the VCO capacity to inhibit the toxicity induced by clinical drugs and various chemicals [15,16,17,18].

In particular, the anticancer drugs used in chemotherapy induce various side effect toxicities in cancer patients [19,20]. Preclinical evidence reveals that it exerts toxicity on the liver, kidney, heart, testis, placenta, brain, lung, ovary, intestine, blood, and thyroid gland [19,20,21,22].

The underlying mechanisms of toxicity strongly reported by experimental studies include oxidative stress, pro-inflammation, apoptosis, and mitochondrial dysfunction [23].

But a number of findings in animal studies indicate that VCO may exert beneficial effects against the toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs [22,23,24,25]. The beneficial effects are attributed to its unique composition of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), phenolic compounds, and other bioactive molecules [11,26].

Notably, it is LA that constitutes a substantial portion of the VCO fatty acid profile, and there is a renewed focus on LA in cancer research circles. LA, the most abundant MCFA in VCO, has demonstrated synergistic effects when combined with conventional anticancer drugs; it showcases selective cytotoxicity against cancer cells while sparing normal cells [27,28,29].

Mechanistic investigations have unveiled its capacity to induce apoptosis, inhibit cancer cell proliferation, and interfere with various signaling pathways involved in cancer development and progression [27,30].

Moreover, while the research on VCO’s anticancer effects is still growing, the available evidence suggests potential for this natural oil in cancer prevention and management. By examining the molecular mechanisms of action and evaluating their efficacy in preclinical and clinical settings, a deeper understanding of how VCO and its constituents may complement current cancer treatment regimens can be attained.

Additionally, exploring their role in mitigating the toxicity of anticancer drugs offers valuable insights into their potential as adjunctive therapies in cancer management. This ongoing exploration holds the promise of contributing to advancements in oncology research and clinical practice, paving the way for improved cancer treatment and prevention strategies.

Abstract

Frequent use of antibiotics increases the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in atopic dermatitis (AD), which prompts the search for new treatments. Monolaurin is a chemical byproduct found in coconut oil and has anti-bacterial properties.

This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of monolaurin on antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus. Thirty children and thirty adults diagnosed with AD were recruited and swabbed at three different sites: lesion, non-lesion, and nasal mucosa. Methicillin resistance and high-level mupirocin resistance in S. aureus were identified using mecA and mupA PCR, respectively, whilst fusidic acid resistance were detected by fusA gene sequencing.

The broth microdilution method and tetrazolium bromide assays were used for monolaurin susceptibility and cellular cytotoxicity, respectively. We show that S. aureus was frequently isolated from lesions of both children and adults with AD. One isolate of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) harboring mecA, one isolate of mupirocin-resistant S. aureus harboring mupA, and four isolates of fusidic acid-resistant S. aureus with novel point mutations of fusA were found in the children group.

In silico molecular docking showed that these mutants interacted weakly with fusidic acid, explaining the mechanism of drug resistance. Monolaurin inhibited these antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus isolates with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 2 µg/mL without cytotoxicity to cultured epidermal and dermal cells. These data show that monolaurin could potentially be used to inhibit antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus in AD patients.

Effects of lauric acid on cognitive impairment in a scopolamine-induced Alzheimer’s disease-like rat model

Abstract

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a multi-factorial type of dementia that poses a social and medical burden in that no effective treatment has been achieved yet. Impaired brain glucose metabolism is one of the major pathophysiological factors linked to its onset and progression. Lauric acid (LA) is a triglyceride with medium chain that can produce ketone body utilize by the brain as an alternative energy source.

Objective: Therefore, the present study was carried out with the purpose of evaluating the effect of LA on cognitive impairments in scopolamine-induced AD-like rat model.

Methods: Forty-two male Wistar rats were divided into six groups to receive normal saline, scopolamine, scopolamine with Donepezil, and scopolamine with varied doses of LA for a period of 21 days. Morris water maze (MWM) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) tests were performed to evaluate cognitive performance. After, brains were harvested and processed to assay for the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Histological analyses using Haematoxylin and eosin staining was also performed.

Results: The LA-treated groups demonstrated memory retention in the MWM and EPM tests, and showed increased levels of CAT, SOD, and GSH similar to the Donepezil group, in contrast to the scopolamine only group while MDA levels, IL-6, and AChE activity were reduced in the LA treated groups contrasted to scopolamine only group. LA reduces oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and AChE activity, which indicates a possible ability of LA to protect against AD.

The Therapeutic Potential of Butyrate and Lauric Acid in Modulating Glial and Neuronal Activity in Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by amyloid-β plaque accumulation, tau tangles, and extensive neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation, driven by glial cells like microglia and astrocytes, plays a critical role in AD progression. Initially, these cells provide protective functions, such as debris clearance and neurotrophic support.

However, as AD progresses, chronic activation of these cells exacerbates inflammation, contributing to synaptic dysfunction, neuronal loss, and cognitive decline. Microglia release pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS), while astrocytes undergo reactive astrogliosis, further impairing neuronal health. This maladaptive response from glial cells significantly accelerates disease pathology.

Current AD treatments primarily aim at symptomatic relief, with limited success in disease modification.

While amyloid-targeting therapies like Aducanumab and Lecanemab show some promise, their efficacy remains limited. In this context, natural compounds have gained attention for their potential to modulate neuroinflammation and promote neuroprotection.

Among these, butyrate and lauric acid are particularly notable. Butyrate, produced by a healthy gut microbiome, acts as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and supporting neuronal health.

Lauric acid, on the other hand, enhances mitochondrial function, reduces oxidative stress, and modulates inflammatory pathways, thereby supporting glial and neuronal health. Both compounds have been shown to decrease amyloid-β deposition, reduce neuroinflammation, and promote neuroprotection in AD models.

This review explores the mechanisms through which butyrate and lauric acid modulate glial and neuronal activity, highlighting their potential as therapeutic agents for mitigating neuroinflammation and slowing AD progression.

These studies are both designed to use lauric acid from coconut oil to develop new drugs or supplements for Alzheimer’s that can be patented.

Unlocking Hope: Development of India’s First Indigenous Ketogenic Dietary Formula for Pediatric Epilepsy Care

Abstract

Background and Objectives:

Epilepsy affects millions of children worldwide, with 30% of cases being resistant to conventional antiseizure medications, necessitating alternative treatments. The ketogenic diet, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate regimen, is effective in drug-resistant epilepsy, but access to affordable, culturally appropriate ketogenic products remains a challenge in developing countries. This study aims to develop the first indigenous ketogenic formula for children with drug-resistant epilepsy, using locally sourced, culturally appropriate ingredients.

Methods:

A ketogenic formula was developed using coconut milk powder, almond flour, soya flour, rice flakes, Bengal gram dal, and coconut oil, ensuring adaptability to ketogenic ratios (1:1 to 4:1). Organoleptic evaluation was conducted with neurologists, dietitians, parents, and children to assess taste, texture, and acceptability. Microbial safety and nutritional analysis ensured compliance with dietary requirements.

Results:

The developed ketogenic formula demonstrated high acceptability across all groups, with neurologists, dietitians, parents, and children giving hedonic scores of 8.8, 8.6, 8.4, and 8.2, respectively. Microbial testing confirmed safety, with no pathogenic bacteria detected. Nutritional analysis confirmed adherence to dietary standards with an energy content 564.99 kcal, fat content 37.99 g, protein content 9.1 g, and carbohydrates 46.67 g. The developed ketogenic formula also maintained its quality and safety throughout a 6-month shelf life study without use of any preservatives.

Conclusions:

This study successfully developed a culturally appropriate, cost-effective ketogenic formula, addressing barriers to epilepsy management in resource-limited settings. Its high acceptability, safety, and adaptability suggest its potential for widespread use. Future clinical trials will assess its long-term efficacy and broader applicability.

Coconut oil’s ability to nourish and heal the skin has been known in the tropics for hundreds of years. Even when the anti-saturated fat campaign waged in the US starting in the 1970s convinced many even in coconut oil producing countries to switch to polyunsaturated oils, Filipinos and others never stopped using coconut oil on their skin because they knew about its wonderful moisturizing and healing powers for generations.

As a saturated fat consisting primarily of medium chain fatty acids (MCTs), it is not easily oxidized and does not cause harmful free radical damage like polyunsaturated vegetable oils.

Filipinos are well-known for their youthful appearance and soft, wrinkle-free skin, even though they live in a climate that exposes them to the sun’s rays year round.

Here are two new studies just published in 2025.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Virgin Coconut Oil Effleurage in Alleviating Pain in Hemodialysis Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Study in an Urban Tertiary Care Center in South India

ABSTRACT

Background:

The study investigates the impact of effleurage massage using coconut oil on pain in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients undergoing hemodialysis. The research aims to explore the potential therapeutic benefits of this intervention in alleviating pain associated with hemodialysis.

Methods:

A quasi-experimental design was used, with 150 individuals with mild to moderate leg discomfort aged 30–70 chosen. The Wong–Baker pain scale was used for pretest. After a month, a posttest was conducted.

Results:

Results showed that 70% of the patients had moderate levels of leg pain, while 30% had mild pain. After the intervention, 36% had no pain, 42% had mild pain, and 22% had moderate pain.

Conclusion:

The study concluded that effleurage massage with coconut oil is effective in reducing leg pain among CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis. (Full study.)

Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial efficacy of coconut oil for periodontal pathogens: a triple-blind randomized clinical trial

Abstract

Objectives

To evaluate the effect of coconut oil on the oral bacteriome and inflammatory response in patients with periodontitis by integrating next-generation sequencing analyses of pathogenic bacterial shifts and quantification of inflammatory markers, thereby assessing its potential as a natural adjunct to standard nonsurgical periodontal therapy.

Materials and methods

A triple-blind clinical trial was conducted with 30 participants diagnosed with periodontitis, randomized into 3 groups: (1) coconut oil, (2) chlorhexidine and (3) placebo. Saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were collected before treatment, one month after treatment, and one month post-non-surgical periodontal therapy. Bacterial DNA was extracted, and the V3-V4 region of the 16 S rRNA gene was PCR-amplified and sequenced using Illumina MiSeq technologies. Inflammatory biomarkers, including Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), were quantified from GCF samples.

Results

Coconut oil treatment significantly reduced pathogenic bacterial families such as Spirochaetaceae and Tannerellaceae while promoting beneficial bacteria such as Streptococcaceae. At the genus and species levels, coconut oil reduced pathogens such as Tannerella forsythia and Treponema denticola along with increase in beneficial bacteria such as Streptococcus. The subgingival microbial dysbiosis index improved significantly in both coconut oil and chlorhexidine groups. Furthermore, the coconut oil demonstrated a reduction in IL-6 and TNF-α levels, indicating decreased local inflammation.

Conclusions

Coconut oil treatment significantly modulated the oral microbiome and reduced inflammatory markers in patients with periodontitis, suggesting its potential as a natural and effective adjunct in periodontal therapy.

Clinical relevance

This study highlights coconut oil’s potential as a natural adjunct in periodontal therapy, effectively reducing pathogenic bacteria and inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNF-α). It offers a safe alternative to chlorhexidine, promoting microbiome balance and improved periodontal health. (Full study.)

You’re right Liz, I deal with this same stubborn yeast/fungal thing, especially in the summertime. While waiting for my second order, I’ve been reading the research reports on the Tropical Traditions website and the archives over and over as if just knowing the information would help me with my own physical problems. But this week, I am a believer from experience!

One of the big problems with skin yeast and fungal infections is that clothing tends to rub absorb or else rub off the expensive medicine after application. This time, I wasn’t looking forward to applying the strong liquid prescription to it because the kind I have stings–big time–when it hits the red, angry, sore area of the yeast infection in the skin folds. I am a 35-year-old female who had red lesions on my face for many years. Unbelievably it finally cleared in three months when I applied Coconut Oil topically to my face each day.

I had been going to a dermatologist for 12 years with minimal results. I had lesions, which were red, and resembled acne. Ironically antibiotics made it worse, yet the doctor kept prescribing them for me. I had used six different topicals for acne, which usually ended up hurting my face. The doctor kept saying “give it a chance it will get worse before getting better.” I couldn’t understand why I had acne since my skin was so dry, itchy and flaky. The retinols were the worst on my skin, followed by the salicylic acid, the glycol’s and then the benzyl peroxides.

Frustrated I then became a nutritional purist for five years and still no clearing. I started using natural remedies, homeopathic, herbals and super foods to change my skin condition. I had already eliminated hydrogenated oils from my diet, so I decided to try to incorporate coconut oil into my diet. I really wasn’t consistent about eating the coconut oil, but I was faithful about applying it to my face each night. I had nothing to loose by giving it a try. My theory on why it might work was due to the fact that the sebum in the skin breaks down the medium chain triglycerides into smaller fatty acids which have antibacterial and anti-fungal activities.

My dermatologist had tried for 12 years to dry up the sebum and kill the bacteria causing the acne, so I decided to go a different route by using the sebum constructively instead of trying to eliminate it. My face cleared and I was so excited that I [went] to my dermatologist and told her about my success. The doctor belittled the theory, saying that I had just grown out of it. [She said that] most likely my hormones had stabilized and that my face clearing at the same time I used the coconut oil was just a coincidence.

Since I believed in my doctor’s medical knowledge, I started to doubt my discovery. So to test my theory, I stopped using the coconut oil on my face, and as well I didn’t go out of my way to eat it either. Additionally, I still avoided hydrogenated oils.

Six months later I had a follow up appointment with that dermatologist and my face was as bad as it had always been. The doctor snidely asked if I was still using that coconut oil because “that heavy oil” had clogged up all my pores. I replied that I had stopped using the oil after our last appointment. However, I intended to use the coconut oil again to see if my theory was right. Unexpectedly the doctor offered to order blood-work to check my hormones at the beginning and again at the end of my trial; I agreed to the testing. My blood-work showed most of my hormones as normal with the testosterone as a little high. I used the coconut oil on my face every night faithfully; and in three months at my next appointment my face had cleared again with almost no scarring. The doctor ran the follow up blood-work and surprisingly my testosterone level had increased. Too much testosterone has been proven to increase acne. The doctor was surprised but wasn’t ready to rule out other factors. She then wanted to do more testing including allergy testing and skin scrapings. This meant that I would have to stop using the oil for some of the testing. I hated the thought of loosing that great confident feeling and freedom I got from having a clear face, but I agreed to the testing anyway.

The doctor tested for different yeast, fungus, ringworm, bacteria, allergens, and Demodex and Scabies mites. I didn’t test positive for any of the allergens either time. When not using the coconut oil, my skin scrapings had increase numbers of Demodex in my sebaceous glands as well as in my hair follicles but there were no Scabies. There were minimal increases in bacteria and the yeast Candidia, but there was a marked increase in the fungus Malassezia Furfur, but not ringworm. This clearly explained why the antibiotics made things worse; I didn’t have acne. Any bacteria was secondary, the main culprit was the fungus Malassezia Furfur which caused a condition called Pityrosporum Folliculitis. Using antibiotic reduced the bad as well as the good bacteria allowing the fungus to grow unchallenged. Additionally, although the Demodex mite lives in everyone’s skin in small numbers, they multiply greatly in immune deficient host and they thrive on yeast in the body.

Since my experiment was intended to use the excess sebum that is present with acne to combine with the coconut oil to fight the bacteria that causes the acne, I failed to prove my hypothesis because my condition was misdiagnosed as acne and I don’t have excess sebum. Hopefully someone reading this with confirmed excess sebum and acne would complete the experiment for me. However though, I do believe my theory was mostly right in that the coconut oil mixes with sebum in the skin which breaks the oil down into the healing fatty acids. In my case it just happened to be the anti-fungal activity of the fatty acids that cleared my skin. By eliminating the yeast, many of the mites starved. As my face healed and the irritation was less, the occurrence bacterial infections decreased.

I truly believe if I stop using coconut oil on my face the fungus will grow out of control and the whole cycle would begin resulting in the lesions I had been plagued with for over a decade. Coconut Oil for Acne

Yes, coconut oil is great for getting rid of both dry skin and pimples. I have had combination skin for years; but almost immediately, I saw my face free from pimples and free from dry areas. In fact, I had a flaky, itchy patch of skin just below my eyebrow that disappeared and has not returned, since regularly using coconut oil on my face — which has been just over a month now. I put in on before bed, without first washing my face; then I wash it off in the morning.

From what I understand, the medium chain triglycerides break down into the useful antimicrobial free fatty acids because of the affects of bacteria on the skin. So I decided to start using the oil on my unwashed face instead of a newly cleansed face, which would have less bacteria and therefore (I assume) a slower breakdown of the oil into fatty acids. Coconut Oil for Skin Problems: Eczema, Keratosis Pilaris, Psoriasis, & Rosacea

We have been using the coconut oil in more ways than I had imagined we would! I use it as a facial moisturizer, and I prefer it to the expensive lotion that I have used for years. She sent me to the pharmacy with a prescription for a psoriasis cream and a lotion and instructed me to use them everyday. Coconut Oil Sun Protection

One of the most interesting facts about people who live in tropical climates like the Philippines, where the people are constantly exposed to the rays of the sun year round, is that skin cancer is almost unheard of in these places.

Here in the US we are constantly warned about the dangers of exposure to the sun, and yet the sun helps our bodies produce much needed nutrients for our skin, such as Vitamin D, which has been shown to prevent cancer.

It should be noted that when reports like this were made in our discussion group in the past, invariably some would try using Virgin Coconut Oil exclusively as a sunscreen and go out and get burned!

Some have even reported that sometimes the coconut oil works wonderfully as a sunscreen, while at other times they seem to get burned.

It seems that the oils you put into your body are just as important as what you put onto your body in regards to sun protection.

We have found that if one eats foods loaded with polyunsaturated oils, generally they will burn more in the sun.

Coconut Oil Pulling for Dental Health

“Oil pulling” is an ancient practice in Asia, but it has been catching on in the United States in recent years. It involves swishing an oil around in your mouth (coconut oil is the most common one) for dental and other health benefits.

Mainstream media outlets here in the U.S. are now reporting on oil pulling benefits, and even many dentists are giving positive reviews based on their patients’ experiences.

There are now many studies published in the peer-reviewed literature on coconut oil pulling, such as the one at the beginning of this article that was just published recently and was a “triple-blind randomized clinical trial“.

Comparative Evaluation of Antiplaque Efficacy of Coconut Oil Pulling and a Placebo, Among Dental College Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Introduction: Oil pulling, has been extensively used as traditional Indian folk remedy since many years to prevent dental diseases and for strengthening teeth and gums.

Aim: To compare and evaluate antiplaque efficacy of coconut oil pulling with a placebo among dental students, in Hyderabad city of India.

Materials and methods: A randomized controlled study was carried out among 40 dental students. Out of 40, 20 subjects were randomly assigned to study group and other 20 to control group. Subjects in the study group were given the coconut oil and control group a placebo, and advised to rinse for 10 minutes, once daily in the morning for a period of seven days. Plaque levels were assessed on day zero, third and seventh day using Turesky-Gilmore-Glickman Modification of the Quigley-Hein Plaque Index (1970) for both the groups.

Results: The mean plaque scores showed a significant difference at baseline, third day and seventh day among both study (p<0.001) and control groups (p<0.001). Group wise comparison revealed, though the mean plaque scores were low among study group on third day and seventh day on comparison with the control group, significant difference was noticed only on the seventh day. Furthermore, the mean percentage reduction of plaque scores were also significant only on the seventh day with a high mean plaque reduction among study groups (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Oil pulling is effective in controlling plaque levels. (Full study.)

Tips for Oil Pulling

Most people use about a teaspoon or so of oil to swish around in their mouth for 15 to 20 minutes. The used oil should NOT be swallowed, but should be discarded in the trash where it will go into a landfill and be burned up. It will clog drains, so spitting into your sink or toilet is not a good idea.

Coconut oil is by far the most popular choice these days, due to the high amount of lauric acid present in coconut oil. Lauric acid has been known for many years to be a powerful antimicrobial germ killer.

Be sure to get a non-refined virgin coconut oil. “Liquid coconut oil” or “MCT Oil” is missing lauric acid, so it is best to avoid those coconut oil derivatives. If refined coconut oil is all you have available, it should work fine, as it will still be loaded with lauric acid (about 50%).

Some processes of refining coconut oil do use chemicals and solvents, but there should not be appreciable amounts left in the finished product that you buy.

Analysis of 26 Studies of the Impact of Coconut Oil on Lipid Parameters: Beyond Total and LDL Cholesterol

Abstract

Coconut oil (CNO) is often characterized as an “artery-clogging fat” because it is a predominantly saturated fat that ostensibly raises total cholesterol (TChol) and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C). Whereas previous analyses assessed CNO based on the relative effects on lipid parameters against other fats and oils, this analysis focuses on the effects of CNO itself. Here, we review the literature on CNO and analyze 984 lipid profile data sets from 26 CNO studies conducted over the past 40 years. This analysis shows considerable heterogeneity among CNO studies regarding participant selection, the amount consumed, and the study duration. The analysis reveals that, overall, CNO consumption gives variable TChol and LDL-C values, but that the HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) values increase and triglycerides (TG) decrease. This holistic lipid assessment, together with the consideration of lipid ratios, shows that CNO does not pose a health risk for heart disease. Because the predominantly medium-chain fatty acid profile of CNO is significantly different from that of lard and palm oil, studies using these as reference materials do not apply to CNO. This paper concludes that the recommendation to avoid consuming coconut oil due to the risk of heart disease is not justified.

This is not even new research, as there are now literally hundreds of studies in the peer-reviewed medical literature that prove false the lipid theory of heart disease, which condemns saturated fats. You can find many of those studies here:

Polyunsaturated “Seed Oils” Have Replaced Saturated Fats in USDA Dietary Advice which has Destroyed the Health of Americans

“Seed oils” have been a hot topic in the media recently, as it is one of the issues that the new head of the HHS, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has been addressing.

And while Mr. Kennedy is partially true in stating that seed oils have contributed to disease in Americans’ diets, we need to first define our terms, and define “seed oils.”

I am not sure how Mr. Kennedy is defining “seed oils,” since he seems to be lumping them all together as “bad.”

However, there are toxic seed oils, which are mainly the ones that have just recently entered the human food chain in modern times due to the development of “expeller-pressed” seed oil technology developed around WW II, and there are traditional seed oils that have nourished populations for thousands of years.

I have listed them in the graph above, and I have included oils that are both developed from the actual seeds, or the “fruits” around the seed, but in all of these cases if you drop the entire seed, such as an olive or a coconut, into fertile soil, it will grow into the plant it came from.

The list of safe seed oils that have nourished populations for thousands of years until modern “science” deemed them “unhealthy,” is shorter then the newer, toxic seed oils, because in ancient cultures people did not simply use “seed oils” as edible oils for cooking, but also animal fats, such as butter, beef tallow, and pork lard, to cook and prepare meals.

But most of these are also high in “saturated fats,” and even though the science is now more than abundantly clear that saturated fats are not only not bad, but actually healthy, the USDA and the FDA will probably never acknowledge this, because to do so would be to destroy decades of teaching that cholesterol is “bad” for people, and convict the pharmaceutical industry of fraud and mass murder, for selling so many cholesterol-lowering drugs for many years now.

Research on Saturated Fats

So if Mr. Kennedy is serious about righting this wrong, then I have a recommendation for him:

Dr. Mary Newport has spent years studying nutrition and diet, and she would be the perfect person to revise the USDA dietary recommendations, which for decades have HARMED the health of Americans, while making HUGE profits for Big Food and Big Pharma.

I have thoroughly researched this claim, and as far as I can see this (dis)information originates from a single article published on Epoch Times by Mary Gillis.

I have searched the FDA website to find the most current news and rulings on this issue of deadly trans fats, and there is nothing on the FDA's website about "banning" trans fats.

In fact, they still allowed it in small quantities for edible oils, and the food manufacturers do not have to list them on their labels as long as they are below the "accepted" limits the FDA has determined are allowable for poisons in foods.

Trans fats are toxic byproducts produced by hydrogenating polyunsaturated oils, such as vegetable oils derived from soybeans and corn, two subsidized cash crops in the U.S. that were only used to extract oil from after WW II and the development of seed "expeller-pressed" technology.

Prior to WW II, these "dietary" oils did not exist in the human food chain. What we had instead were the traditional fats and oils that nourished our ancestors: Saturated Fats.

They are found in animal sources, such as lard, tallow, and butter, and also from vegetable sources such as coconut and palm "oil". These are known as the "tropical oils", as in their native environment in the tropical countries they tend to stay liquid at room temperature, but are mostly solid (fats) in northern climates, such as North America and Europe.

When the Japanese cut off the shipping lanes from the tropical countries to the U.S. and Europe during WW II, American food processors began hydrogenating polyunsaturated oils like corn and soy to make then mimic saturated fats.

Years later, it was determined that the byproducts from these hydrogenated oils were toxic and disease-causing, and many nations started banning them.

The rational thing to do would have been for the U.S. Government to reverse their harmful "low-fat" diet advice and only promote polyunsaturated oils as "healthy", and return to the traditional saturated fats that our ancestors grew up consuming.

But no, that could never be, as it would take away corporate profits at the expense of having healthier fats and oils benefit Americans' health. It would also remove their main motive to promote cholesterol-lowering drugs, as they need to demonize saturated fats by scaring everyone that if they consume them, they will have high cholesterol that leads to heart disease, the "lipid theory" of heart disease that has been widely debunked in the scientific literature.

The Globalists know that traditional saturated fats are healthy: they just don't want YOU to know, because it decreases their profits in Big Pharma and Big Food.

However, since the early 1930s it has been known that a diet high in saturated fat is not only NOT unhealthy, but it can actually cure disease.

I have thoroughly researched this claim, and as far as I can see this (dis)information originates from a single article published on Epoch Times by Mary Gillis, which was also republished by ZeroHedge News:

That guilty-pleasure donut you love will soon get a healthy makeover.

Known as partially hydrogenated oil, or PHO, one type of trans fat commonly found in commercial baked goods linked to heart disease and other health issues for years is about to be eliminated from the U.S. food supply.

The long road of removing trans fats from the food supply is about to end.

It started in 2015 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that artificial trans fats were unsafe to eat. The agency gave the food industry three years to reformulate products and ensure an orderly transition in the marketplace.

Starting Dec. 22, 2023, no products containing PHOs will be allowed on grocery store shelves. (Full Article.)

First of all, the “long road” to warn consumers in the U.S. about the dangers of trans fats began long before 2015. It began in 2006, when the FDA mandated that food nutritional labels had to identify the deadly trans fats.

However, the FDA had a “loophole” that allowed foods containing fewer than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving to claim “zero trans fat.” (Yes, the FDA allows companies to lie about their products.)

The first proposed ban on trans fats was issued by the FDA in 2013, ten years ago.

I have searched the FDA website to find the most current news and rulings on this issue of deadly trans fats, which is found here. (Or here, since pages on the FDA’s website tend to change or disappear frequently.)

Here is the link to the actual “Final Rule” on “Revocation of Uses of Partially Hydrogenated Oils in Foods” in the Federal Register.

Here is the “Summary”, and as you read it please look for the word “ban“:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or we) is amending our regulations that provide for the use of partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) in food in light of our determination that PHOs are no longer generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

The rule removes PHOs as an optional ingredient in the standards of identity for peanut butter and canned tuna. It revises FDA’s regulations affirming food substances as GRAS pertaining to menhaden oil and rapeseed oil to no longer include partially hydrogenated forms of these oils, and deletes the regulation affirming hydrogenated fish oil as GRAS as an indirect food substance.

We are also revoking prior sanctions (i.e.,pre-1958 authorization of certain uses) for the use of PHOs in margarine, shortening, and bread, rolls, and buns based on our conclusion that these uses of PHOs may be injurious to health.

We are issuing these amendments directly as a final rule because they are noncontroversial given the public health risks associated with PHOs and the increasing use of PHO alternatives, and we anticipate no significant adverse comments because PHOs were declared no longer GRAS for any use in human food in 2015. Didn’t see the word “ban” anywhere?

The FDA’s actions regarding PHOs address artificial sources of trans fat, but trans fat will not be completely removed from the food supply because it occurs naturally in meat and dairy products and is present at very low levels in other edible oils.

Again, nothing on this page about “banning” trans fats.

In fact, they are still allowing it in small quantities for edible oils, and the food manufacturers do not have to list them on their labels as long as they are below the “accepted” limits the FDA has determined are allowable for poisons in edible oils.

What are Trans Fats and What are Food Manufacturers Using to Replace Them?

Trans fats are toxic byproducts produced by hydrogenating polyunsaturated oils, such as vegetable oils derived from soybeans and corn, two subsidized cash crops in the U.S. that were only used to extract oil from after WW II and the development of seed “expeller-pressed” technology.

Prior to WW II, these “dietary” oils did not exist in the human food chain.

But they are very unstable oils, with a very short shelf life, so technology was used to “hydrogenate” them to make them more solid, and convert them from “oils” (liquid at room temperature) to “fats” (solid at room temperature.)

Nature, however, already has its own version of “fats” that have been used in human nutrition for thousands of years, and they are called “saturated fats.” They are found in animal sources, such as lard, tallow, and butter, and also from vegetable sources such as coconut and palm “oil”. These are known as the “tropical oils”, as in their native environment in the tropical countries they tend to stay liquid at room temperature, but are mostly solid (fats) in northern climates, such as North America and Europe.

They are VERY shelf stable, as Virgin Coconut Oil and Virgin Palm Oil, in their natural states, will not go rancid for decades, if at all, even at room temperature.

When the Japanese cut off the shipping lanes from the tropical countries to the U.S. and Europe during WW II, American food processors began hydrogenating polyunsaturated oils like corn and soy to make then mimic saturated fats.

Years later, it was determined that the byproducts from these hydrogenated oils were toxic and disease-causing, and many nations started banning them.

But when WW II ended, the Globalists in the U.S. did not want to lose any market share back to the tropical oils, so they did what they always do to protect their market, they got the U.S. Government to declare that saturated fats were harmful, and to recommend hydrogenated polyunsaturated fats instead, supporting American agricultural interests.

So what has the food industry done to replace trans fats? After all, the FDA has given them more than a decade to find alternatives, as most of the rest of the world has long since banned them.

The rational thing to do would be to reverse their harmful “low-fat” diet advice and only promote polyunsaturated oils as “healthy”, and return to the traditional saturated fats that our ancestors grew up consuming.

But no, that could never be, as it would take away corporate profits at the expense of having healthier fats and oils benefit Americans’ health. It would also remove their main motive to promote cholesterol-lowering drugs, as they need to demonize saturated fats by scaring everyone that if they consume them, they will have high cholesterol that leads to heart disease, the “lipid theory” of heart disease that has been widely debunked in the scientific literature.

Therefore, they did what the Globalists always do, and just created a newer toxic form of polyunsaturated fats that will comply with FDA labeling laws so they can continue controlling the market with maximum corporate profits: Interesterified fats.

Are these newer industrialized fats, “Interesterified fats,” any healthier than “trans fats”?

They haven’t been in the human food chain very long yet to know the long-term effects, but a search in the peer-reviewed studies on PubMed does return 146 results, and they are mostly all negative.

Abstract

Industrially generated trans-fats have been linked with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and have thus been replaced by interesterified (IE) fats, in foods. Interesterification rearranges fatty acids on the glycerol backbone of a triacylglycerol molecule.

However, the impact of IE fat on health is unknown.

We recently reported differences in lipid absorption kinetics between IE and rapeseed oil (RO). Here, we investigated the mechanisms underpinning IE fat digestion kinetics in the same muffins baked using an IE fat, non-IE fat [with the same fatty acid composition] and rapeseed oil (RO) under simulated conditions. IE and non-IE fats were largely solid in the gastric phase and strongly associated within the muffin matrix, whereas RO formed liquid droplets which separated from the matrix. No significant difference in lipolysis rates was detected between IE and non-IE fats.

The lipolysis of the RO fat was slower, due to long-chain PUFAs. Interesterification itself did not affect digestibility, but the strong interaction between the hard fats and the muffin matrix resulted in extensive creaming of the matrix in the stomach, leading to delayed gastric emptying compared to the RO sample. The rate and extent of lipolysis were determined by the amount of fat available and the structure of the fat. This demonstrates the importance of the physical behaviour of the fats during digestion and provides a mechanistic understanding of the overall lipid digestion of IE fats, which relates to their physiological response. Interesterified fat maternal consumption before conception programms memory and learning of adulthood offspring: How big is this deleterious repercussion?

Abstract

In recent years, interesterified fat (IF) has largely replaced trans fat in industrialized food. Studies of our research group showed that IF consumption may not be safe for central nervous system (CNS) functions.

Our current aim was to evaluate IF maternal consumption before conception on cognitive performance of adult rat offspring. Female Wistar rats were fed with standard chow plus 20% soybean and fish oil mix (control group) or plus 20% IF from weaning until adulthood (before mating), when the diets were replaced by standard chow only.

Following the gestation and pups’ development, locomotion and memory performance followed by neurotrophin immunocontent and fatty acids (FA) profile in the hippocampus of the adulthood male offspring were quantified.

Maternal IF consumption before conception decreased hippocampal palmitoleic acid incorporation, proBDNF and BDNF levels, decreasing both exploratory activity and memory performance in adult offspring.

Considering that, the adult male offspring did not consume IF directly, further studies are needed to understand the molecular mechanisms and if the IF maternal preconception consumption could induce the epigenetic changes observed here.

Our outcomes reinforce an immediate necessity to monitor and / or question the replacement of trans fat by IF with further studies involving CNS functions. (Source.)

The Globalists Know that Traditional Saturated Fats are Healthy: They Just Don’t Want YOU to Know, because it Decreases Their Profits in Big Pharma and Big Food

The evidence that traditional saturated fats are actually very healthy is so overwhelming, that the Globalists do their best to suppress this information from the public, because it is a threat to their business model.

Since the early 1930s it has been known that a diet high in saturated fat is not only NOT unhealthy, but it can actually cure disease.

This is called the “Ketogenic Diet“, that was first developed by doctors at Johns Hopkins to treat children with epilepsy when their drugs failed.

A search on Health Impact News on the “Ketogenic Diet” will return over 100 results, showing how this high fat diet can cure more than just epilepsy, but also cancer and many other diseases.

Living in the Philippines from 1998 through 2002, I was the one who reintroduced coconut oil back to American consumers, the most “saturated fat” in nature, and one of the most dramatic health benefits that we discovered from users was Virgin Coconut Oil’s ability to sometimes reverse diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease.

Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects various cognitive functions, behavior, and personality. AD is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, including exposure to aluminum (Al).

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) may have potential as a natural neuroprotectant against AD. Aim of this study was to determine neuroprotective effects of VCO on Al-induced neurotoxicity in an in vitro AD model. SH-SY5Y cells were initially cultured in normal growth medium and then differentiated by reducing fetal bovine serum content and adding retinoic acid (RA).

Later, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was added along with RA. The differentiation process was completed on the seventh day. Study groups (n = 3) were designed as control group, VCO group, Al group, Al-VCO group, Alzheimer model (AD) group, AD + Al-exposed group (AD+Al), AD + VCO applied group (AD + VCO) and AD + Al-exposed + VCO applied group (AD + Al + VCO). Specific markers of AD (hyperphosphorylated Tau protein, amyloid beta 1–40 peptide, and amyloid precursor protein) were measured in all groups.

In addition, oxidative stress parameters (total antioxidant capacity, lipid peroxidase, protein carbonyl, and reactive oxygen species) and neurotransmitter-related parameters (dopamine, dopamine transporter acetylcholine, and synuclein alpha levels, acetylcholinesterase activity) were measured comparatively in the study groups.

VCO reduced amyloid beta and hyperphosphorylated Tau protein levels in the study groups. In addition, oxidative stress levels decreased, and neurotransmitter parameters improved with VCO.

Our study shows that VCO may have potential therapeutic effects in Alzheimer’s disease and further experiments are needed to determine its efficacy. (Source.)
