
We need to celebrate the communities and all generations throughout the monarch flyway that are contributing to this success, and at the same time, we need to take stock of what is working and continue with our efforts to recover the monarch butterfly whose future remains uncertain. 7.24 acres is indeed a success compared to the previous season, but the goal for the overwintering population established in 2015 is 15 acres.
One thing we can be certain contributes to the recovery of the monarch butterfly are the many small native plant habitats that jewel the landscape. These smaller gardens are essential habitat that help connect to larger native plant spaces, creating safe intervals for the monarch butterfly to fly between areas of rest and nourishment during their long migration.
As hubs of their community, schools can play a vital role in connecting urban centers to larger swaths of habitat. When schools create gardens for the monarch butterfly with native milkweed and nectar plants, they are not only creating a safe space for monarchs to refuel and lay their eggs in the spring, but they also often create a ripple effect of habitat education, replication, and stewardship into their surrounding community.
Schools serve as the place community members and volunteers can engage to learn and take action, whether helping to build and maintain the gardens or learning from the students and discovering free resources. They are also the place community members can give back by sharing their knowledge.


As part of Monarch Heroes 10th Anniversary Celebration, we lift up a handful of the schools who are serving as hubs for monarch butterfly recovery in their communities. Below are some stories from across Texas of how Monarch Heroes gardens have grown beyond school grounds.
Teachers from Woodlawn Academy (San Antonio) and Pattersen Elementary (Houston) take gardening from school to home and build neighborhood and family connections in the process.
Monarch Heroes has not only changed my way of teaching but my way of living. I am much more conscious of native plants. I have started growing native plants on my balcony. I have convinced friends to plant native plants in their yards, and this spring on my drive from San Antonio to Houston, I called my mom to describe in detail all the native wildflowers blooming along the highways. This program helped me take my interest in conservation to a true passion and has given me the tools to not only take personal action, but to inspire others to take action as well.



Inspired and motivated by the Monarch Heroes garden at our school, I planted a monarch habitat garden at my home. I included milkweed and nectar-rich flowers to support monarch butterflies and other pollinators throughout their life cycle. I continue to expand my garden and share what I’ve learned with my family, neighbors and community. I have shared its purpose with my co-teachers, adminstrators, students and families, discussed my personal experience creating a home habitat, and encouraged participation in planting and caring for the garden.
Students and families have also been inspired to take action at home by reviving their existing gardens with native plants or by starting small pollinator-friendly gardens, and planting milkweed to support monarch butterflies. Many have also inquired about which pollinator plants to use and where to get them. So, we know they are taking it seriously!
School garden teams at Ann Richards Middle School (Austin), Baker Montessori (Houston), and Diamond Hill Elementary (Fort Worth) build community connections and support for gardens through spreading neighborhood gardens and the value of habitat stewardship.

Through a year-long senior project on geriatric depression, students at Ann Richards Middle School explored practical ways to support emotional well-being in adults over 65. Their research revealed that regular exposure to nature can significantly improve mood and help reduce symptoms of depression. Inspired by these findings, the students partnered with the South Austin Senior Activity Center to create a native plant monarch garden.
Now certified by the National Wildlife Federation, the garden serves as a vital habitat for monarch butterflies, offering food and shelter during their migration. But its impact goes beyond environmental benefits. The garden has become a shared community space where seniors can connect, contribute, and find creative inspiration. Whether tending to the plants or using the space for art, participants often experience a renewed sense of purpose and belonging—key factors in reducing loneliness.
Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. In a survey conducted by the students, every respondent at the Activity Center said the monarch garden brought them joy, and all expressed interest in learning more about it and seeing it expand.
Learning about native plant species has shaped our decision processes about what to plant throughout our campus. As neighbors and by-passers notice us creating habitat, they get curious. We now have a regular group of families taking care of the Spark-Park, and we have had several parents lead planting events in collaboration with Trees for Houston. As we establish more “planted islands” at the perimeter of our school, neighbors are starting to feel comfortable and encouraged to plant herbs, native flowers and grasses. Slowly but surely, we are enticing humans to start connecting and stewarding these little islands of public lands in the heart of H-Town (Houston).

At our Earth Day celebration, several parents shared with me that their children are more aware of the nature around them and have even scolded a parent or two for being careless with plants and/or insects at home. We made seed balls and students and parents were able to drop them in areas of the neighborhood that could use some brightening up. One parent said her daughter now wants to make a pollinator space in the backyard and had asked mom if they could get a tree trimmed so there would be more light.
Whether community members volunteer to create monarch gardens, attend student led campus community forums or volunteer to share their knowledge with students, the ripple effect and impact on monarch conservation is real.
A teacher from Cunningham Elementary (Austin) switches career paths to found a non-profit, PEAS, and support school gardens across a city.
Building upon my experience as a teacher at Cunningham Elementary, at PEAS (Partners in Education, Agriculture, and Sustainability), we have extended the impact of the Monarch Heroes program by incorporating pollinator education into our broader curriculum and supporting other schools in developing and enhancing their own pollinator gardens. The lessons and practices rooted in the Monarch Heroes program now reach additional educators, students, and communities beyond a single campus.
Students often take on the role of educators within their own households. They encourage their families to avoid pesticide use and help them understand how even small actions can support pollinators. Some families extend their involvement into the broader community by tending the school gardens and advocating for pollinator-friendly landscaping in shared spaces. These actions demonstrate how the Monarch Heroes program helps cultivate not only knowledge but a sense of responsibility that carries beyond the classroom and into the community.


In addition, some wildlife species are territorial, which can limit their population density. To find mates and reproduce, many species must travel long distances. It’s critical to maintain large undeveloped landscapes that allow for free movement, especially as climate impacts put more wild animals on the move.

Mule deer are very picky eaters. Instead of eating huge amounts of grass as some other foragers do, they select the most nutritious parts of plants, including leaves, stems, and buds.
Their ability to find food is being affected by prolonged droughts caused by climate change, along with other human impacts on their habitat, which has resulted in mule deer declines.
The National Wildlife Federation assesses and documents threats to mule deer, including climate change and oil and gas development in their habitat. We’re also working to expand conflict-free habitat for wildlife and create more open migratory corridors for mule deer and other species.

Manatees are marine mammals found along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. In wintertime, when ocean temperatures drop, manatees seek refuge in warm waters, including natural springs that exist throughout Florida.
However, dams and other barriers can prevent manatees from accessing the warm waters they need, while water quality issues have caused high manatee mortality rates in recent years. Other threats to manatees include unpredictable water temperatures resulting from climate change, as well as deaths from boat strikes.
Today, the National Wildlife Federation is working to educate boaters, protect and restore natural manatee habitat, and improve water quality to save this beloved species. Our Gulf Program focuses on habitat restoration, coastal resilience, and improving the health of marine ecosystems—including vital winter and foraging habitats for manatees.

There was a time when you’d find the beautiful and elusive Canada lynx in many northern states. Today, outside of Alaska, there are only a handful of states with stable lynx populations.
As more old-growth forests are cut down, more lynx habitat is destroyed or disrupted. They are losing the habitats they need to unsustainable industrial logging and development! In addition, climate change is impacting snow cover, which is an important part of the landscape—both for lynx and their prey. As a result of these threats, they are now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
To combat the impacts of habitat fragmentation and climate change on imperiled species like the lynx, the National Wildlife Federation has teamed up with two dozen partners to maintain, enhance, and restore landscape connectivity for wildlife across the Northern Appalachian-Acadian ecoregion. We’re working to ensure that lynx have the ability to move where, when, and as far as needed—especially as climate change alters their habitat.

Pronghorn are the fastest land animal in North America, able to run nearly 60 miles an hour. That’s more than twice as fast as the fastest humans.
Pronghorn also have the longest land migration in the continental United States. Herds of pronghorn migrate 150 miles each way between Wyoming’s Upper Green River Basin and Grand Teton National Park each year.
This lengthy trek is grueling and requires crossing private property and fences. Along the way, they may encounter highways, impassable fences, and development that can impede their progress. That’s why the National Wildlife Federation and its affiliates are working hard to open migratory corridors for pronghorn and other wildlife, reduce conflicts between animals and people, expand the use of wildlife-friendly fencing, and address climate impacts in their range.

Watch the greater sage-grouse in mating season, and you’ll get to see one of the most romantic dances of the animal kingdom.
The males strut their stuff, fan out their spiked tail feathers, inflate their chests, and loudly coo and huff—all to attract a female. They’ve been doing it long before humans came on the scene. But threats such as oil and gas development and expanding agricultural development have shrunk sage-grouse habitat to half of its historic range and caused the bird’s numbers to decline by as much as 80 percent in the last six decades.
At the National Wildlife Federation, we’re pushing the government to protect more sage-grouse habitat in the West.

Sandhill cranes have long, thin legs and necks. One of their most distinctive features is the bright red patch you’ll see on their foreheads.
Some sandhill cranes are migratory, and the Platte River basin in Nebraska is a favorite rest stop on their way north. Each year in March, more than 500,000 cranes converge there—resting, eating, and mating—before they finish their migration to their breeding grounds.
It’s beautiful to see. But the numbers may be in decline. Today, two nonmigratory subspecies called the Mississippi sandhill crane and the Cuba sandhill crane are listed under the Endangered Species Act, affected by threats including habitat loss and development, while less predictable rainfall caused by climate change is altering wetlands.
Creating a sustainable future for these birds requires protecting their habitat and range, including the wetlands of the Platte River basin. It also requires creating and expanding more science-based climate change solutions! We’re advocating to defend the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a critical law that helps protect sandhill cranes and other migratory birds.

It’s no surprise that an enormous animal like the North Atlantic right whale also has a large migration range—up to 1,000 miles!
Along the way, they encounter multiple urgent threats, including vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. As a result, the North Atlantic right whale is now one of the most endangered mammals in the world, with a population of only a few hundred left.
Now climate change is making their situation even more dire. As the whales are forced to alter their migration patterns in search of food, they are more vulnerable to ship strikes and are less able to find food to support reproduction. It’s urgent that we continue to seek safe migratory channels for whales and create and expand climate solutions, including renewable energy.

With the support of the community and a Nature Club of over 200 members, Lou Natale, Wayne Fredrick (Community Wildlife Habitat Co-Lead for Moss Creek), and their team embarked upon numerous activities over the past eight years to enhance and preserve Moss Creek’s natural habitat and engage their community.
Activities include but are not limited to shorescaping containment ponds, constructing blue bird, owl, and bat boxes (which are regularly cleaned) and placing them in common areas, conducting garden tours, holding native planting events, organizing naturalist-led tours, and more! Most of these activities continue today and new ones are added every year.

Moss Creek was confident that their work would satisfy the outreach requirements for Community Certification, but they were far short of reaching their minimum habitat certification point goal. As part of the Community Wildlife Habitat program, volunteers focus on community engagement to encourage residents to certify community common areas, homes, and parks as wildlife habitats.
In considering how to address this requirement, Lou, Wayne, and the team also had to deal with pandemic restrictions that essentially eliminated all face-to-face community and club events. The elimination of these venues limited options to convey the benefits of property certification, as it impacted all indoor community-based work in the program.
In order to address these challenges, the Moss Creek Community Wildlife Habitat team came up with several initiatives to engage their community. They developed a video for YouTube and posted it to the community and Nature Club Facebook accounts, included information in Nature Club newsletters, sent individual letters to Nature Club members, set up an information booth at events, and contacted neighbors to promote the program. Natale has found the most success by connecting directly with community members, “we were confident that by working together we could create opportunities to achieve our goal.”

“You have to be persistent, you have to try and get personal,” says Natale, “Talk to your neighbors about it – they become ambassadors for you and help promote the program.” By November 2021, the Nature Club Board believed the community could meet habitat certification points and community certification requirements. Moss Creek registered in the Community Wildlife Habitat program in December 2021.
Lou Natale and Wayne Fredrick formalized their team with other members of the Nature Club Board and community administration. Prior to the first meeting, the team agreed to assign specific responsibilities to each member. One was assigned to prepare minutes of the meetings; others were designated to be our interface with other communities in the state. Lou and Wayne held the responsibility of coordinating with the National Wildlife Federation and the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, respectively.
The pandemic further challenged the work by limiting the team’s ability to meet in-person. They still planned and conducted meetings regularly outdoors and through teleconference, and maintained constant communication with one another.

With their outreach work having already been established, Moss Creek was able to swiftly meet the requirements of the Community Wildlife Habitat program. The team maintained their educational programming and activities and continued to connect with neighbors and increase habitat certification points. In May 2022, Moss Creek was awarded certification. “The combined cooperative efforts of the people and groups of our community have made this possible,” says Natale.
As for the next steps, Moss Creek will continue their work with the Nature Club to meet annual recertification requirements, continue to add more wildlife habitats to their community, and brainstorm how they might include their Community Certification Achievement in the community’s marketing.

On Sept. 8, 2020, extreme drought, multiple ignitions, and an unprecedented windstorm sparked wildfires across the Western Cascades. The fierce, easterly winds blew three massive wildfires downhill, towards towns built in the forests. The Riverside Fire, Beachie Creek Fire, and Holiday Farm Fire, each blazed down the mountainsides, following the contours of the Clackamas, North Santiam, and McKenzie rivers, respectively.
These rivers are vital sources of drinking water, providing nearly 750,000 Oregonians with some of the cleanest water in the nation. They are also spring-fed, cold-water climate refugia for native trout and other salmonid species.

With every heat wave, with longer and more frequent droughts, we in the Pacific Northwest realize our rains are no longer enough to dampen the flames. As we enter a new phase in the eternal elemental dance between fire and water, it seems fire now holds the upper hand.
Yet, on the McKenzie River, as our communities emerge from these disasters, a network of local nonprofits, government agencies, landowners, the Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB), and the University of Oregon has developed strategies to reduce the long-term effects the climate-change fire regime will wreak upon our watersheds. The first step was to establish partnerships to facilitate collaboration during crises.
“Back in 2000, Eugene was one of the first larger metropolitan areas to take its watershed as part of its water infrastructure and to recognize that,” EWEB’s Watershed Restoration Program Manager Karl Morgenstern said. “Now we have the trust and relationships to do projects like large-scale floodplain restoration. Other places are facing disasters and those relationships are not in place, and they’re having to build those in the midst of a disaster and that just adds complexity and delays action.”
The McKenzie River’s Pure Water Partners (PWP) program assessed fire-damaged properties just days after they burned. In a matter of weeks – after it was safe to enter the area – EWEB, the McKenzie River Watershed Council, McKenzie River Trust, and the Upper Willamette Soil and Water Conservation District installed erosion control measures to prevent toxic ash and debris from burned homes from entering the river – the sole source of drinking water for 200,000 people in Eugene. EWEB installed additional water quality monitoring stations to detect contaminants.
In the year since the fire, the PWP works with over 250 landowners in the McKenzie River Valley to assess fire damage, control invasive species, reduce fuels to support FireWise properties, and install additional erosion control measures. They’ve replanted 89 riparian properties. EWEB provides loans and incentives for folks to rebuild their homes and septic systems farther back from the river.
In response to the wildfires, our communities are showing their strengths – but how will our watersheds hold up?
Historically, western watersheds are well-accustomed to fire.
“These systems are resilient. They’ve seen fire for eons, so this is nothing new,” said Willamette National Forest Lead Hydrologist Johan Hogervorst. “I think some of those immediate impacts, to people, to places, to our homes, are quite startling, but the watershed itself is going to heal very quickly. The plants are going to come back. It’s going to take a while for the forest to regenerate – we’re going to help that wherever we can – but fire is not a new thing here.”

The truth is our watersheds need healthy forests, and healthy forests need fire. Fire clears forest understories, allowing mature trees to grow larger. Certain conifers need fire to melt the waxy coverings off their serotinous cones to release their seeds. Fire creates diverse habitats for all kinds of wildlife: snags for woodpeckers and wood-boring insects, new grasslands for large mammals to hunt and forage, and sunny forest openings where butterflies and reptiles can bask.
In the short-term, wildfires can even benefit our threatened and endangered trout and other salmonids. Burned trees fall into the waterways, forming complex habitats where juvenile fish can hide and hunt. Logjams can also create pools of cool, deep water – great resting sites for spawning fish journeying upriver. Sunken trees can form riffles that stir up and oxygenate the water, promoting egg development.

“The thing with salmon is they have this diverse life structure. They’ve been growing this whole time to evolve to these different kinds of natural distractions that happen to their world,” said EWEB Water Resources Supervisor Susan Fricke.
Although salmon have evolved with fire, their populations are startlingly low. Combined with a century of development that has degraded our watersheds’ ecosystem functions, intense stochastic events like the Holiday Farm Fire could wipe out entire genetic populations of salmon.
“As European-Americans moved in, we started developing the [McKenzie] Valley. We started pushing the river to one side, removing the wood out, doing a lot of riparian logging,” said Kate Meyer, Fisheries Biologist for the McKenzie River Ranger District.
Intense wildfires — and the megafires we are increasingly experiencing today — can further degrade these weakened watersheds. Burned hillsides become more likely to collapse without trees to hold their soils in place. Landslides and mudflows can smother a river with sediment, choking fish, their eggs, and introducing high nutrient loads that encourage harmful algae and bacterial growth.

When riparian forests burn, they become less effective at shading streams and riverbanks. Water temperatures rise, also facilitating the growth of bacteria and toxic algae. Conditions improve for invasive fishes that predate upon native ones.
With reduced snowpacks and hotter summers, the loss of riparian forests is another major blow to the survivability of our native trout and salmon species. According to Save Our Wild Salmon (a close partner with the National Wildlife Federation), salmon and steelhead begin to suffer harmful effects when water temperatures exceed 68° Fahrenheit. Salmon eggs die in water temperatures above 56oF.
The effects of climate change are only just beginning to accelerate the war between fire and water. To bolster the watershed’s defenses, we can pull in another element, earth. Research and experience on the ground show that restoring floodplains and adjacent wetlands can greatly improve water quality and improve the landscape’s ability to withstand and recover from fire and drought.
For example, the McKenzie River’s Pure Water Partners (PWP) are digging up incised river channels and flattening floodplains, recreating healthy networks of meandering waterways that will capture excess sediment from landslides, keep the landscape wetter and cooler, and encourage riparian forests and wetlands. This is a new kind of conservation hydrology called “Stage Zero” restoration projects, reestablishing natural ecosystem processes and resetting geomorphic trajectories to pre-development levels.
With changing precipitation patterns and the loss of snowpack, the goal is to create a system that has resilience to these disturbances that are occurring at a faster rate than we thought.
The first Stage Zero restoration project in 2015 focused on 780 acres and 4.5 miles of the South Fork of the McKenzie River, an important tributary for spawning salmon. Recent surveys before the project found only a few dozen redds, but just a couple weeks after implementing that project there were 241 Chinook redds, Meyers explained, “so we were just blown away by that!”

Proving their success, the team moved on to Deer Creek, one of the McKenzie’s largest tributaries. Before the project, salmon had not been observed spawning there since the 1990s. They returned as soon as construction was finished.
“What we’re seeing for these Stage Zero restoration projects, is if you build it, they will come,” Fricke said.
When the Holiday Farm Fire swept through the South Fork project area, Meyer and her team feared their work had been destroyed. On the contrary, restoring the floodplain made it more resilient to fire.
“When we were finally able to get on the ground and see the project, it really looked like an oasis,” Meyer said. “There’s a lot of live trees remaining. A lot of the understory vegetation was unimpacted…because there’s so much water and hydrologic connectivity, I think that really buffered the fire effects through that project area.”
Morgenstern explained further:
“The model is to look at the big tributaries — those that are big enough and have a low gradient valley that these projects would be effective…and even for those smaller creeks …The whole idea is to try to do this across as many of the creeks as we can where we can get access and make these projects happen. Because our prime directive at EWEB is to provide reliable safe drinking water to our community. That means protecting water quality at the source — miles upstream from town — and all the way to the tap at community homes and businesses.”
In the McKenzie Valley, nearly a year after the Holiday Farm Fire, innovative construction projects are rapidly transforming the river back to its old ways.
“The more floodplains the better,” EWEB’s Susan Fricke said. “As the water is able to spread out over the floodplain, you increase infiltration capacity and its buffering capacity to be able to deal with these big natural disasters. We are increasing that resiliency when you let the whole ecosystem function as it’s supposed to.”

Adam Spencer is a Communications Specialist for the Eugene Water & Electric Board who focuses on the utility’s stewardship of the McKenzie River, where he grew up.
The innovative partnership that’s helping the watershed in the McKenzie Valley is part of a trend emerging throughout the West. The National Wildlife Federation coordinates the Healthy Headwaters Alliance, a coalition including Eugene Water and Electric Board and other western water innovators, utility executives, federal land managers, scientists, community and water justice leaders, and conservation professionals, who share a commitment to equitable, science-based actions to build resilience back into western forested headwaters.
Many farmers tend to overlook another advantage of implementing these practices: they can provide habitat for wildlife in the agricultural landscape. Animals’ means of survival rest upon habitat and food. Conservation farming can provide both. This can best be explained when examining the food chains involved.
Cover crops are crops planted to maintain and improve the soil’s integrity between cash crops. This practice improves soil structure that supports below and above ground biodiversity, including soil microorganisms and insects.

Birds like the at-risk eastern meadowlark can feed off of these insects, meaning that cover crops can enhance the food web. Ground birds like pheasants, quail, and turkey can build up energy on food found in fields of cover crops prior to the removal of cover crops. Even though they may not nest directly in these fields, it could help increase nest success for these birds.
A recent survey conducted at the University of Illinois sought to investigate the use of cover crop fields by migratory and resident birds. The researchers concluded that relative bird abundance was greater in cover crop fields versus non-cover crop fields.
“Avian Conservation Significance value (ACS) values were most influenced by the Eastern Meadowlark, a species of high conservation concern,” according to their findings.
This research provides evidence that cover crops can become the lifeline many birds like the eastern meadowlark struggle with finding during the spring in agricultural landscapes.
Besides cover crops, the effects of no-till farming and diverse crop rotations on biodiversity and wildlife are also apparent. The minimal soil disturbance that is a product of the no-till method enables crop residue to remain on top of the soil.
Rotating diverse crops from one planting season to the next can also improve the properties of the soil. No-till, crop rotations, and cover crops can also provide better and longer-lasting cover for ground and grass nesting birds to build nests. Mammalian wildlife including deer also benefit from conservation farming.

According to one study, deer can use cover crops to shield themselves from potential predators. Taller cover crops like cereal rye enable fawns to be sheltered from potential predators. Similar crops like winter wheat and barley provide deer with a food source for the winter. For those farmers who prefer deer to not roam on their crop fields, they can plant sunn hemp, a favorable forage species for deer, on the edges of fields to lure them away.
Conservation farming methods have multiple benefits for soil, climate, and water quality. Crop rotations cover crops, and no-till can provide wildlife shelter and food in managed cultural landscapes.
Many farmers across the nation and world are being encouraged to make the transition from conventional farming practices to more conservation-focused ones to improve their soils and water quality. From reduced tillage methods to rotating diverse crops and planting cover crops, farmers can play their role in seeing a healthier, more balanced ecosystem while investing in a more sustainable future for food production.
Over the past five decades, a program called the Land and Water Conservation Fund has protected and supported more than 40,000 state and local parks and over two million acres of wild lands that nurture and sustain hundreds of our most treasured species. We cannot imagine what our country would be like if the Land and Water Conservation Fund were not in place over the last five decades. We cannot imagine our country without national parks, national wildlife refuges, protected forests, trails, or local parks in the future. Hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife-watching, or just enjoying nature in our own neighborhoods would become increasingly difficult—and for some of us, impossible.
But the Land and Water Conservation Fund expired in September. Take action to help keep saving the places you share with wildlife.
Time is running out for Blandings, wood and spotted turtles. These declining species inhabit parts of the central and eastern U.S. and Canada. Wherever they live, the challenge is to protect adult turtles and assure hatchlings and young turtles make it to breeding age.
The good news? State wildlife agencies and partners have a plan to set these turtles on a path to recovery by 2023. Funding from the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act can make it happen. But only if the wildlife-saving legislation passes.

Just as the turtles navigate with a mental map, state wildlife biologists map the journey of restoration. They mark turtles to identify and prioritize habitats to conserve and connect. They protect nests from flooding and hatchlings from predators. They alert motorists and make roads safer. Working together, partners address other serious threats, too, like illegal collecting for the pet trade. With consistent and necessary funding, we can turn the tide in favor of turtles.
Protecting turtle wetlands, streams and ponds helps other creatures, from fish and ducks to beavers and great blue herons. Conserving their nesting uplands benefits birds like the Baltimore oriole and rose-breasted grosbeak. That’s why these turtles serve as “umbrella species.” Saving turtles benefits hundreds of animals and plants that live in their suite of habitats.
Let’s help all turtles move safely and freely, and live to a ripe old age.

Northern flying squirrels can’t live in just any kind of woods. They need big decaying trees for nest homes and plentiful supplies of nutritious nuts, fruits and fungi in the soil. Passing the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act will directly help flying squirrels by funding State Wildlife Action Plans aimed at bringing back species that are at greatest risk.
States ready to take action, once the bill passes, to reverse habitat loss and declines for flying squirrels in trouble include North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., Vermont, Massachusetts, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Wisconsin.

The flying squirrel glides through the air but cannot truly fly, and is about the size and weight of a robin at 9-12 inches and three ounces.
From high in the trees, these tiny squirrels leap into the air and spread their four feet wide to expand their nifty “parachute”. The loose furred skin (called patagium) stretches from the wrists of their forearms to the ankles on their hind legs. To turn in midair, these aerial squirrels expertly flick their tail as a rudder and tenses their legs or body to adjust the shape and tautness of the parachute.
Superlative Gliding Feats
Lightness contributes to the flying squirrels’ long gliding flights of up to 100 meters. While human wing suit flyers can go much farther, they can’t mimic another awesome quality. To slow down for a landing, the squirrel flips that useful tail up and holds its body back to grasp a tree trunk, and then scrambles up.
Seeing in the Dark
Besides gliding prowess, the flying squirrel’s dark eyes are big for a reason. They harbor many more rods than cones, compared to our eyes. That means the dark night for them is as bright as day. All their senses are sharp. Like most squirrels, they sniff out nuts, but also feast on lichen and fungi.
Forest Heroes
The northern flying squirrel, in fact, plays an important role in forests by eating, storing and distributing truffle spores. Some truffles are wildly popular as a gourmet food. These fungi tucked in the complex soils of undisturbed forests help trees access vital nutrients and water.

At the end of 2017, Congress was doing the same thing. One of the actions Congress took before leaving for its holiday recess was moving the deadline to fund the government to January 19th, and then just moved the deadline once again. By March 23rd, Congress must decide the spending levels for all federal programs for the year. But as Congress’s to-do list looks right now, our country’s wildlife may be left out to dry. So here are two things we are asking Congress to make sure are included in their to-do list when deciding federal spending in the coming weeks:
Some of the most damaging parts of this year’s spending bills are the policy “riders” that are attached to them, which are unrelated to the spending at hand and are attached because they would likely fail on their own. Unlike the pelagic crabs that ride on sea turtles in the Caribbean to eat the turtles’ harmful parasites, the riders on these bills are anything but symbiotic.
One very troubling rider fast-tracks the repeal of the Clean Water Rule, which allows the Environmental Protection Agency to better enforce the Clean Water Act. The Clean Water Act helps protect our streams, rivers, and wetlands—allowing wildlife to fight back against habitat loss and degradation—and it is essential that its provisions are enforced. Other harmful riders include efforts to undermine the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, and other important environmental regulations that keep us (and our wildlife!) safe.
Currently, there are different proposals from the House and the Senate regarding the levels of funding for various essential conservation programs. Perhaps the most far-reaching are the proposed cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency. In its proposal, the House suggests cutting the Agency’s budget by more than $500 million. For an agency that already has a lot on its plate, that amount of money being taken from its coffers, likely in the form of staff cuts, prevents the agency from doing its job protecting our air, waterways, lands, wildlife, and people from harmful toxins and other pollutants.
Another funding decision that is especially concerning is the drastic cut in funding for wildland fire suppression in both the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior. Over the past few decades, we have seen fires grow in intensity and damage, upending countless numbers of human lives, regional economies, and wildlife populations. Just this past year, we saw the deadly effects of the wildfire in California’s Napa Valley. Current trends do not indicate that wildfires will decrease in quantity or size, which means that we should be maintaining—or better yet, increasing—federal funding to prevent megafires in the future and reduce the risk from fires that do spread.
Congress must understand that wildlife should not be an afterthought. The health of our animal species is interlinked with health of our own species. We exist in the same environment and all require clean air, clean water, and the preservation of wild spaces.
Here at the National Wildlife Federation, we’re working hard to make sure Congress does not scale back pro-wildlife programs, but we need your help to do it.
We do not have to choose between funding the government and protecting our animal family. We can do both, and when we do, the benefits are immeasurable.
Trees absorb pollutants through their leaves. In fact, one tree can absorb more than a ton of carbon dioxide in its lifetime! They also lessen the force of storms by impacting windspeed, catching precipitation before it reaches the ground. 100 trees catch 100,000 gallons of water per year – reducing erosion and the amount of runoff into sewers, streams and rivers.
Native trees provide critical habitat for wildlife – providing nuts, seeds and berries (food), cover and places for wildlife to raise their young. Trees also provide countless benefits to people and communities!
Funds donated by our supporters and the grants we receive are used to purchase native tree seedlings and support the work required to plant the trees. This includes identifying local partners, securing locally-appropriate native tree seedlings, arranging timely delivery so the trees are “fresh,” supporting the local organizations that plant or giveaway the seedlings and working with them to follow up and ensure that the trees that are planted are properly cared for after they are planted. We engage the public (typically youth and children) in education about the benefits of trees to wildlife and communities. We work with schools, girl and boy scout troops, municipalities and non-profits to select locally native trees that will provide the most benefit to wildlife.
All tree seedlings planted through Trees for Wildlife are planted in the United States. In fact, we have planted more than a quarter million native tree seedlings for wildlife since merging with Erthnxt / Trees for the 21st Century in 2010! Here are some highlights from our 2017 tree planting events (as well as this complete list of 45 spring and summer 2017 events).
Just before Thanksgiving, we provided 3,000 native tree seedlings for distribution to residents at the Farm City BBQ at Cambier Park in Naples with our partner Keep Collier Beautiful. These trees will help residents replant trees that were damaged or lost during Hurricane Irma, whose eye passed over Collier County in early September.
In April of this past year, at Lauderdale Lakes Middle School, a team of volunteers, parents, teachers and students worked to transform a 450 foot stretch of grass and weeds adjacent to the school track into a wooded habitat for migratory birds and an outdoor learning laboratory for students at the school. Students also took home a one gallon native tree (of the same variety planted at the school) to plant and care for at home.
In January, the Florida Wildlife Federation (a National Wildlife Federation state affiliate) and the Iris Garden Club (IGC) of Wakulla replaced native trees lost to development and storms at the annual Crawfordville Arbor Day Celebration & Tree Giveaway at Hudson Park in downtown Crawfordville. At the Arbor Day Celebration & Tree Giveaway, more than 500 adults and children each selected one free tree. Tree experts and experienced gardeners were on hand to provide information and help people select suitable trees for their yards. Leftover trees were planted by IGC members at various community sites, including schools and county parks.
