]]>As we head further into spring, and attention turns to vehicle maintenance and repairs, auto recyclers are today, well positioned to offer reliable and affordable solutions when it comes to replacement parts. A good example are engines and transmissions. There have been studies done in Australia and the UK that show that around 83% of consumers are willing to use parts sourced from recyclers due to the often prohibitive costs in sourcing new components.
Going the extra mile
When it comes to big ticket items like engines and transmissions, top tier recyclers are going the extra mile to ensure they are supplying high quality parts, and backing them up with both good parts and labour warranties. In some cases, a good condition, low mileage engine or transmission sourced from a recycler can cost a third the price of a new one, so the savings are significant, particularly during times of economic uncertainty.
The reality is, that here in Canada and elsewhere, consumer budgets are being squeezed, so any benefits we can provide in terms of cost savings, can go a long way.
As these words are written, we have been working on a RFP for a social media company to help us create messaging around the uptake on recycled parts, the benefits and cost savings they provide in addition to the environmental benefits.
GHG benefits
On the environmental and Green House Gas (GHG) side, our studies at OARA have revealed the costs and effects in manufacturing new parts versus using recycled ones, and today, with the conflict in the Middle East and oil prices rising, the cost of transportation is increasing across the supply chain. This presents another opportunity for auto recyclers to leverage their advantage in being local and having a wide range of quality parts available for significantly less than sourcing new ones, as well as providing a much reduced carbon footprint.
Combine that with the fact that the vehicle fleet continues to age and that consumers are keeping their cars longer—a 60-70% saving on a repair bill for a consumer goes along way in keeping their vehicle on the road and helping them over the longer term.
Processes and practices
Another aspect to competing successfully on the replacement parts side also comes down processes and business practices. In previous columns, we’ve discussed revamping the Gold Seal standard on the collision side, but at ARC and OARA we are also working on implementing best practices on the mechanical parts side as well.
Some of these include having solid information when it comes to condition and mileage of items like engines and transmissions, as well as good photos and descriptions and having the right tools and equipment, including scan tools, so each facility that obtains these parts knows what they’re selling.
A good example are engines that cannot be turned backwards, and providing warning labels and lockout devices to prevent that from happening and causing unnecessary damage to these engines. Another example is also placing warning labels on transmissions that indicate whether the unit has been drained of fluid or not, since a lot of transmissions no longer come with dipsticks to check the fluid level. These are just some of the efforts that our top tier recycler members within ARC and OARA are doing so they can ensure their customers get the best parts at the most competitive prices.
Greater communication
We’re also seeing greater communication between our association and others on the mechanical/service side, as there are opportunities for both our sectors to work more closely together. Ultimately, our goal, both on the collision and the mechanical side is to provide comfort and assurance that the parts that shops receive from a Gold Seal certified auto recycling facility will meet their requirements and consistently ensure a successful repair and a happy customer.
Our industry has been around for over 100 years and being well-established gives us unique insights. We understand what it takes to an acquire a customer and to keep them, and we have, and will continue to stand behind the products we sell. We will also continue to seek out partnerships and focus on initiatives that spread awareness around what professional auto recyclers do and the growing benefits they provide to both the automotive service sector and the wider circular economy.

When Jeff McGregor first took his seat on the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association Board of Directors in 2019, he brought with him something no orientation manual could teach — six decades of his family’s name, reputation, and hard-won trust, all staked on the future of responsible auto recycling in Ontario.
This spring, after seven years of dedicated board service, Jeff has stepped down from the OARA Board of Directors. His departure marks the end of a chapter — but not the end of his commitment. He will continue to serve on three of OARA’s active committees, ensuring the steady leadership he cultivated in the boardroom keeps shaping the industry he has served his entire life.
OARA Chairman Greg Woodbeck offered warm words of thanks: “I would like to thank Jeff McGregor from McGregor Auto Parts for his commitment to the OARA Board. Jeff will continue to serve OARA on those committees after stepping down from the Board. Thank you Jeff.”
To understand what Jeff’s board tenure meant, you have to understand where he came from. On March 1, 1962, Henry Alexander McGregor — known as Mac — founded McGregor Auto Parts in a modest yard in St. Thomas, Ontario. Built on hard work, mechanical know-how, and fair dealing, the business grew through the generations: Mac’s son Jim joined and expanded the operation, and today the third generation is led by Jeff alongside his wife Shelly, his brother Tim, and their children.
They didn’t just inherit a company. They inherited a reputation — one built over 60 years of trust. In 2005, Jeff took that commitment further by bringing McGregor Auto Parts into the OARA membership, reflecting the family’s dedication to responsible recycling, ethical business practices, and that same character showed beyond the yard. In 2015, Jeff traveled to Sierra Leone on a humanitarian mission, using his mechanical skills to repair water well-drilling equipment for a village in need — a reminder that the values of a small-town auto recycler can reach far beyond Elgin County.
Jeff McGregor’s seven years on the OARA Board were an extension of that ethos. He showed up, contributed, and served on three committees simultaneously — lending expertise and character to an association that, in many ways, reflects his own values: professionalism, environmental stewardship, and care for the communities that auto recyclers call home.
His name comes off the Board roster this spring. But in St. Thomas — and across the Ontario automotive recycling industry — the McGregor name stays on the sign.
That’s legacy.

]]>From March 26-28, the Ontario Auto Recyclers Association (OARA) hosted its 2026 convention. This annual event represents the single largest automotive recycling expo in Canada, and naturally drew attendees not only from across the province, but across the country, from the U.S. and even internationally, from places as far away as Australia. Illustrating just how popular this event has become, it was also the best attended on record with over 430 registrations.
As in previous years, the event contained a mixture of general sessions, workshops, an on-site trade show, as well as ample social and networking opportunities.
Following meetings and as well as recycler and stakeholder roundtable sessions on March 26 [where recyclers, insurers and vendors openly discussed current market situations and creating a potential collaborative strategy regarding accreditation and repair standards for the industry going forward], the official sessions kicked off the following morning.
Recycled parts trends
Ryan Mandell, from Mitchell International hosted a session on Recycled Parts trends. Mandell dove into some of the key issues currently impacting the industry, including tariffs. While he acknowledged that the U.S. Supreme Court had struck down a range of International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs, for the automotive industry Section 232 still remains in place, which means that it costs more to ship parts into the U.S. and since these tariffs came into force last year, the U.S. economy has begun to see inflation creep up again.
Mandell noted that often, what happens in the U.S. tends to be a harbinger of what we can expect here in Canada. He also explained that many OEMs have been waiting on the outcome of the Supreme Court Decision when it comes to raising prices on parts and complete vehicles. “The losses created as a result of tariffs, are staggering,” Mandell explained, and because parts are a different animal to complete cars (i.e. consumers are not often comparing parts against each other like they do vehicles), it tends to be easier for OEMs to raise prices on parts to cover their losses.
He noted that while Canada is currently more insulated against current tariff polices, the global nature of today’s automakers and supply chains means that price increases are likely to be seen across the world, due to the globalized nature of raw materials.
He also stated that inflation is not uniform, meaning some types of parts are seeing much greater price increases than others, such as bumper covers and headlight assemblies.
“When it comes to high cost parts like modern headlight assemblies and bumpers, there are potentially big opportunities for recyclers who can provide these components.”
Supply chain disruptions
Additionally, the recent conflict in the Middle East is likely to bring supply chain disruptions again, and the combination of higher parts prices and reduced availability provides recyclers a distinct advantage, since today, collision centres are more focused on profitability since they can’t rely on insurance claim volumes the same way as they have in the past. This means looking at a repair first approach and considering used parts instead of new ones.
The latter is also becoming a more prevalent approach among insurers that are looking to meet GHG and sustainability targets. Plus, when it comes to high cost parts like modern headlight assemblies and bumpers, there are potentially big opportunities for recyclers who can provide these components for less money, plus when things like broken tabs can be repaired, there is more profit for collision centres and across the entire supply chain.
Artificial Intelligence is currently a hot topic, but many businesses are still trying to grasp how to best implement it in their business. Chris Daglis from ARI Auto Partnered Solutions provided some suggestions. He talked about fragmented versus embedded AI and “a tale of two yards.”
While, in this hypothetical scenario, both yards were busy, the first one had a fragmented approach to using AI, resulting in hours of time lost and major inefficiencies, because his AI solutions were not integrated into the business. The second operator took a different approach where multiple AI tools are used for different purposes.
The AI takes calls overnight and on the weekends, and signs them to the sales staff. Additionally an AI buying tool allows efficient searching and bidding on the right vehicles, maximizing both time efficiency and profitability. Daglis explained that in today’s environment, talent alone doesn’t win, it must be combined with the effective teamwork and the right systems in order to achieve optimal results.
By having tailor-made AI tools and solutions that are fully integrated into the business, instead of just bolted on, recyclers can create a purposeful, connected and compounding process—one in which efficiency gains not only add up, but multiply across every aspect of the business. And the time to start doing this, said Daglis, is right now.
A special guest this year was the Honourable Member of Provincial Parliament for Milton, Ontario and Associate Solicitor General for Auto Theft and Bail Reform Zee Hamid.
Auto theft update
Hamid noted that auto theft within Ontario remains a significant problem, and the amount of auto theft that has been taking place is staggering. He said that over the years it has essentially morphed from joyriding into a true commodity driven business. While he explained that the Government of Ontario has been taking action, and that overall vehicle thefts were down 24% in 2025, it still remains a serious issue.
While around half of all vehicles stolen are exported and the government is making it tougher for criminals to do this, a growing issue concerns domestic VIN fraud. He noted that among auto thefts, a common problem is that these vehicles are later resold and VINs are recreated.
This poses a problem in many ways, a good example being that when a vehicle is involved in a collision, or is towed or impounded, or stolen, the VIN doesn’t exist. And with advanced technologies like AI, the ability to steal vehicle identities and create fictitious new ones is a growing problem.
Hamid stressed the need for government to work together with industry, including recyclers and insurers, leveraging both technology and collaboration to combat this serious problem.
Working together
A panel discussion that brought together multiple industry associations also stressed the need for collaboration to further objectives. Hosted by Steve Fletcher, former OARA Executive Director and now industry ambassador, the panel included Patty Kettles, Executive Director, Automotive Aftermarket Repair Organization (AARO), Emily Chung, President of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada), Mario Venditti, Director, Canadian Association of Recycling Industries (CARI); Adam Moffatt, Executive Director, Ontario Tire Dealers Association (OTDA) and Jim Hamilton, Executive Director, Used Car Dealers Association (UCDA).
The panel looked at the synergies between the different associations and how each and its members can bring significant value to the table when it comes to the benefit of the auto care and service sector. Adam Moffatt talked about the growing problem of scrap tire stockpiles in Ontario, and how recyclers, insurers, collision repairers and tire retailers and vendors can all play a role in helping tackling an issue like this. There truly is strength in numbers and based on the way in which we’ve seen Canadian industry associations focus on collaboration in the past, there is a bright future in developing and advancing these collective relationships and objectives.
Belief + strategy = results
A fascinating keynote address came from Jer Banta, from Profit Team Consulting. Banta talked about Belief, Experiences, Growth and Finding Purpose. He shared with the audience is own experiences working in the auto recycling industry, starting as a college dropout, delivery driver, then getting into parts sales and becoming a sales manager and director and ultimately, industry consultant.
Banta said that one of the key factors to being successful is having the right culture within the organization and “getting the right people in the right seats.” During his time at Bessler Auto Parts in Kentucky, Banta said that by adopting the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), brought much needed clarity to the organization, enabling it to determine what the vision and core purpose were, finding concise ways of measuring progress and sharing it with the staff, plus determining which people in the organization matched its core objectives and were vested in achieving the same outcome.
When that happened, he said that the “the team started to feel part of something and we all had the same goal: We knew how much profit we wanted to make, what the sales goals were and if we were hitting them.”
By collectively working together as an entire team, focused on the same outcomes, Banta said that things really began to gel. Sales took off, profits increased and any obstacle, no matter how big or small could be effectively managed and overcome, including COVID related disruptions. He noted that when Bessler started making consistent profits, the company instigated a profit sharing plan with its employees and its 10-year goal in revenue was reached in just six years.
Ultimately, he said that when you have the belief, be committed and take action, and that if you do, you will find a way to make things happen.

]]>As you read these words, the OARA’s 2026 Convention and Expo will be upon us. After last year’s event in Niagara Falls, the Convention returns to Markham and the Hilton Toronto/Markham Suites at 8500 Warden Avenue in Markham, Ont. Many aspects from last year’s event have returned for 2026, including a visit to a local auto recycling facility.
We’ve seen that this represents one of the best ways that our members can learn from others and see first hand how other facilities operate, while also providing great outreach for other stakeholders including insurers, vendors and regulatory bodies, such as OMVIC.
Roundtables resonating
We’ve also found that the stakeholder roundtable discussions we’ve hosted prior to officially opening the convention have also resonated well with attendees and have proven to be a great opportunity, to not only generate conversations, but see how the industry can come together and collaborate on various topics going forward. In 2026, our focus is on emerging issues impacting auto recyclers. For us, a key part of these events is engaging with key stakeholders, including insurers and repairers so they can share with us the challenges and opportunities in their sector of the market and we can share ours with them–the ultimate goal being to forge closer ties and create outcomes that benefit all of us and advance the circular economy.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been the hot topics over the last few years, and at the Convention we placed an emphasis in not only have keynote sessions on the topic, but framing it within a macro-economic context for auto recyclers, instead of how it impacts one specific area such as claims, parts distribution or inventory management.
While trade issues and tariff disputes continue to be a major topic and challenge for the North American automotive industry (including recyclers), having our colleagues from the ARA in the U.S. coming on masse to our event recognizes not only how the OARA Convention has grown in scope and prominence within a North American context, but how collaboration and working together on both sides of the border is helping our sector move forward.
Our trade show continues to expand as well, and we’ve getting more requests not only from vendors across Canada and in the U.S., but increasingly internationally, to come and demonstrate their products and services, as well as meet with ARC and OARA members.
International awareness
The auto recycling facility visits are also striking a chord, not only with our members, but also those attendees from the U.S. and other countries. With ARC being the leader and co-host for the International Round Table (IRT) on auto recycling, there is a greater sense of awareness internationally about what we’re doing here in Canada, while at the same time we’ve also seen the IRT continue to strengthen, to the point that today, more than 40 countries have participated in IRT events.
While our overall goal is to keep driving results for recyclers, we understand that this requires focusing on both shorter and longer-term objectives. We’ve found that while it is important that auto recyclers have a voice and their concerns are properly represented at both a regional and national level, we also need to be open to working with our counterparts in other countries, such as the affiliations we have with ARA in the U.S. and internationally through the IRT. We’ve found that by coming together, sharing ideas and observing what is happening in other parts of the world, there can be real benefits for our industry and our members back home. That being said, there needs to be a case in implementing a specific idea or initiative, and it has to make sense for us and our members, though in the longer term context, it has been consistently proven that there is strength in numbers.
Laying the groundwork
On a final note, I wanted to mention Steve Fletcher and the incredible job he and the association has done in laying the groundwork for what we had today. While we celebrated Steve’s official retirement at the 2025 OARA Convention in Niagara Falls, he continues to work with us as an industry ambassador and consultant, and we welcome his ongoing support as we continue to focus on moving this industry forward and serving the best interests of our members.

]]>While ARC supports policies that reduce emissions and encourage innovation, how these measures are designed matters just as much as the intent behind them.
Incentives must be sustainable — and not destabilizing
Over-incentivizing any vehicle segment risks distorting the automotive ecosystem, particularly the auto repair and recycled parts markets that keep vehicles affordable, repairable, and on the road longer.
EV rebates must be:
• Sustainable for taxpayers;
• Calibrated so they do not unintentionally undermine the existing repair and recycled-parts marketplace;
• Designed with an understanding that repairability and parts availability are central to affordability and emissions reduction.
A cleaner fleet is not achieved simply by accelerating new vehicle sales — it also depends on keeping vehicles repairable and responsibly managed throughout their full lifecycle.
Auto recyclers must be part of the policy dialogue
Canada’s automotive recycling sector is routinely left out of upstream policy discussions, yet we are ultimately responsible for managing the outcome:
• vehicles written off due to collisions;
• vehicles deemed non-repairable; and
• end-of-life vehicles, whether ICE or EV.
When policy changes occur without recycler input, the burden shifts downstream — without the tools, funding, or information required to manage the risk properly.
EV transition requires training, data, and transparencyAs EV volumes increase, auto recyclers need:
• Formal EV training programs;
• Clear battery chemistry and safety information;
• Standardized guidance on dismantling, storage, transport, and emergency response;
• Reliable parts and fitment data to support repair and reuse.
These are not optional — they are public-safety and environmental necessities.
Chinese EV imports raise immediate and unresolved concerns
The introduction of Chinese-manufactured EVs into the Canadian market presents a new and urgent challenge.
At present, recyclers have little to no access to:
• repair procedures;
• battery specifications;
• dismantling and handling protocols:
• part numbering or fitment information.
This lack of transparency creates real safety, environmental, and operational risks for repairers, recyclers, insurers, and emergency responders alike.
ARC’s position
ARC supports a competitive automotive marketplace — but competition only works when all participants are operating with the same information, standards, and expectations.
Policy decisions around EV incentives, emissions standards, and trade must account for the full vehicle lifecycle, not just the point of sale.
Auto recyclers are not a downstream afterthought.
We are a critical part of Canada’s automotive system — and we must be included early, consistently, and meaningfully in the conversation.
ARC is ready to engage — constructively and collaboratively — to ensure Canada’s transition is safe, affordable, and responsible from first registration to final recovery.

]]>The Saskatchewan Automotive Recyclers Association (SARA) appreciates the opportunity to provide input into the renewal of Saskatchewan’s Solid Waste Management Strategy. SARA members represent the professional automotive recycling industry in Saskatchewan and play a critical role in environmental protection, material recovery, and circular-economy outcomes through the responsible management of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs).
SARA members collaborate regularly with provincial peers across Canada through the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC), ensuring that Saskatchewan’s perspectives are aligned with national best practices and policy discussions.
We also acknowledge and appreciate the Ministry of Environment’s recent engagement with the automotive recycling sector, including facility tours conducted in Saskatchewan. Direct observation of real-world operations is an important step toward informed, practical policy development.
Existing Compliance and Oversight Frameworks
All SARA members are CAREC (Canadian Auto Recyclers’ Environmental Code) audited as a mandatory condition of membership. CAREC provides a nationally recognized, third-party verified framework for environmental, safety, and operational compliance specific to automotive recyclers.
CAREC originated in 2008 as the National Code of Practice for Automotive Recyclers, developed in cooperation with the Government of Canada to support the delivery of the National Vehicle Recycling Program – Retire Your Ride. The Code was created to ensure that hazardous materials contained in end-of-life vehicles were managed responsibly and did not contaminate land, water, or air during the recycling process.
Following the conclusion of the federal Retire Your Ride program in 2011, and in recognition of the Code’s effectiveness and widespread industry adoption, the framework was retained, renamed the Canadian Auto Recyclers’ Environmental Code (CAREC), and expanded to apply to all end-of-life vehicles processed by ARC Members, not solely those targeted under the incentive program.
While CAREC is mandatory for all ARC Members, the Code and associated audits are available to any automotive recycler, regardless of ARC membership. This ensures CAREC functions as an open, nationally accessible environmental standard, rather than a membership-restricted requirement, and allows governments to recognize CAREC-audited facilities without compelling business affiliation.
CAREC has been updated over time to remain aligned with evolving regulations, policies, and industry best practices. Today, it serves as an invaluable national standard for the environmentally sound management of ELVs and demonstrates a proactive, industry-led commitment to environmental stewardship originally developed in partnership with the federal government.
SARA has encouraged the Ministry to recognize CAREC audit documentation as a credible and effective compliance mechanism and to focus regulatory and enforcement resources on non-compliant operators and non-members, rather than duplicating oversight for facilities that already demonstrate adherence to established national standards.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – Electric Vehicle Batteries
SARA recognizes that Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has been an effective policy tool in Saskatchewan for certain material streams.
However, with respect to electric vehicle (EV) traction batteries, SARA’s position aligns with the current national consensus within the automotive recycling sector: EPR for EV batteries is not supported at this time.
A voluntary EV battery recovery and management program is already in place and operating nationally, providing a practical framework for safe handling and recovery while EV volumes remain relatively low.

At this stage, this voluntary approach is serving the needs of recyclers, manufacturers, and public safety more effectively than a premature regulatory framework.
SARA recommends that Saskatchewan:
• allow the voluntary EV battery program to continue and mature;
• monitor measurable outcomes such as safe handling, collection coverage, recycler access, and downstream processing capacity; and
• identify clear, performance-based “trigger conditions” that would justify future consideration of EPR only if the voluntary system no longer meets environmental, safety, or operational objectives.
Introducing EPR requirements for EV batteries prematurely risks disrupting existing recovery pathways, increasing costs without demonstrated benefit, and limiting recycler participation at a time when EV adoption remains in its early stages.
Material-Specific Timelines and Expansion of EPR
SARA has concerns regarding the proposal to establish material-specific timelines to expand EPR legislation to a broader range of waste streams, including those generated by the industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors, with priority materials identified as including EV batteries.
Automotive recyclers manage complex products that are already part of a well-established reuse and recycling ecosystem. Any future expansion of EPR must recognize these existing systems and involve early, direct consultation with affected sectors to avoid unintended consequences.
In this context, SARA also encourages Saskatchewan to prioritize the improvement—or establishment, where gaps exist—of a consistent, province-wide recovery system for automotive tires. Inconsistent tire pickups and related operational challenges experienced by recyclers undermine environmental outcomes and create unnecessary operational risk.
Other provinces operate functional tire recovery programs, and ARC has direct experience and expertise across multiple jurisdictions. This knowledge can be leveraged to provide Saskatchewan with practical input on program design, governance, and performance expectations.
Tracking and Monitoring of Unregulated Waste Streams
SARA notes the proposal to track, monitor, and report on unregulated waste streams to inform future waste management efforts.
While data-driven policy is important, SARA cautions against approaches that could inadvertently re-classify end-of-life vehicles as “waste” or reintroduce licensing or regulatory frameworks that were previously eliminated. ELVs are not simply waste; they are complex products that deliver significant environmental benefits through parts reuse, metals recycling, and the proper handling of fluids and hazardous components.
Any tracking or reporting initiatives should:
• clearly distinguish ELVs from unmanaged waste streams;
• recognize the environmental value delivered by professional automotive recyclers; and
• avoid policy mechanisms that could create regulatory uncertainty for compliant businesses.
Closing
SARA supports a balanced, evidence-based renewal of Saskatchewan’s Solid Waste Management Strategy. Continued collaboration, recognition of mandatory CAREC auditing developed in cooperation with the federal government, openness of the CAREC framework to all recyclers, and alignment with national best practices through ARC will help ensure Saskatchewan’s policies achieve strong environmental outcomes without undermining effective existing systems.

]]>For an industry rooted in precision, efficiency and environmental stewardship, AI offers something powerful: the ability to make better decisions faster and with clearer data than ever before.
As someone who spent my entire career inside an auto recycling facility before stepping into this role, I can say with confidence that AI is not replacing recyclers — it is amplifying what the best recyclers already do.
Smarter buying through AI
AI-powered analytics help recyclers determine the true value of incoming vehicles with far greater accuracy than traditional bidding strategies. By reviewing millions of real-world data points — auction histories, regional pricing trends, demand patterns and part-level profitability — these systems give recyclers a sharper edge in a highly competitive market.
AI already helps facilities avoid bad buys, bid with more confidence and maximize the return on every vehicle entering the yard.
Better inventory and part grading
Accurate grading has long been one of the most debated topics among recyclers, bodyshops and insurers. AI-driven image recognition is beginning to close that gap.
Using high-resolution imaging and machine learning, these tools can identify imperfections, align damage with grading categories, compare components against millions of past listings and flag inconsistencies before a part is listed.
This matters even more as ARC, OARA, URG, ARA and eBay work toward aligned grading, photo and certification standards — an effort gaining momentum globally.
Optimizing operations from yard to dismantling bay
AI-driven management systems can forecast which parts will sell fastest based on regional demand, seasonality and historic trends. This helps facilities prioritize dismantling, allocate labour efficiently and reduce inventory stagnation.
Early versions of new tools are also emerging, including predictive maintenance for dismantling equipment, automated yard mapping through drones and computer vision, and VIN-based decision engines that instantly check regulatory status, recalls and branding inconsistencies.
These advances reduce risk, streamline workflow and support compliance as VIN branding and auto-theft investigations grow more complex across Canada.
The insurance connection
Insurers remain among the biggest potential beneficiaries of next-generation AI. With proper data integration, AI tools can verify part authenticity, reduce supplement rates, predict usable parts based on damage profiles, provide transparency on GHG savings per part and flag potential fraud or clone VINs.
By grounding decisions in verified data, AI can strengthen relationships between recyclers and insurers and reduce longstanding friction.
GHG calculations and the circular economy
With OARA’s verified GHG-savings metrics now established, AI can automate environmental reporting and convert manual spreadsheets into real-time sustainability dashboards.
This is exactly what governments, insurers and OEMs have been asking for: clear, traceable proof of impact.
AI is positioned to help recyclers demonstrate the environmental value that has always existed — now backed by quantifiable data.
What comes next
The pace of innovation is accelerating. What feels cutting-edge today will be standard practice within a few years. Over the next two to three years, recyclers can expect AI to reshape parts compatibility checks, fitment verification, chat-based customer service, automated e-commerce listings, national traceability for EV batteries and VIN-linked lifecycle reporting from acquisition through dismantling.
The convergence of AI, data and strong industry standards will meaningfully modernize how recyclers operate.

This year’s OARA Convention will include a dedicated session on AI and automation in auto recycling, with insights from Canadian recyclers, technology partners and international associations.
We will look at what AI tools recyclers already use, where value is being created, what to avoid in an AI-driven marketplace, how to prepare yards, staff and systems for what comes next, and the role AI will play in certification, insurance acceptance and grading.
This will not be theory. It will be practical, hands-on and immediately useful.

]]>During the OARA Roundtable Discussion that previewed the 2025 OARA Convention, a key topic of debate was the amount of used parts used in repairs in Ontario, and how recyclers and collision centres can create a system where expectations are set, to avoid disappointments, delays and parts returns. This is becoming a real issue for the industry, especially as we’re seeing more interest from insurers and collision centres in working with auto recyclers to help meet sustainability targets as well as alleviate any potential supply chain issues, since these parts can often be sourced locally, saving collision centres and insurers both time and money.

Key metrics
At ARC, there has been a Gold Seal standard in place for recycled parts since 2012. The trouble is that in today’s complex environment, it doesn’t go far enough in addressing major metrics such as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), as well as having an active complaints process that can help address issues such as parts delays or quality issues.
These are genuine concerns and as time has gone on, we’ve seen more and more industry feedback about the need to establish a clear and concise quality standard for recycled parts, since too often, collision centres end up with parts which aren’t what they thought they ordered. These kinds of issues require parts to be frequently returned, which puts pressure on all stakeholders and negatively impacts relationships as well as the supply chain. This is a major reason why ARC has been actively developing a Gold Seal 2.0 initiative.
Review, understand and train
This is a document in which every recycling facility will have to review, understand and be trained upon to implement the standards contained within it. The aim of Gold Seal 2.0 is to provide collision centres and insurers comfort in knowing the parts they are getting are exactly what’s advertised. Achieving this will require better communication across the industry, including between recyclers, insurers and collision centres, as well as a clear and consistent method to prevent sub-standard practices when it comes to parts utilization.
So far, it’s been very encouraging, and we’ve seen that insurers are increasingly wanting to work with us to supply replacement parts to collision centres. For it all to succeed however, we need a clear standard in determining parts quality as well as recycler operating practices, and Gold Seal 2.0 is designed to establish that.
Moving forward
As you read these words the program is moving forward. At OARA and ARC, we’ve sent out provisional documents to gain insight and input from the industry and key stakeholders and it is a priority project for the association. The goal is to have the Gold Seal 2.0 document completed in time for the 2026 OARA Convention and we’re hoping that it will represent a key part of the next stage of evolution for auto recycling, ensuring a smoother process where parts quality is consistent across the board, leading to shorter cycle times, better quality repairs and better results for everyone involved in the auto recycling and collision repair process.
