How do I get involved?

Las Vegas, Nevada, March 2025– By partnering with The Elkes Foundation and Jumping Cow Press, the 1000 Books Foundation is the proud recipient of another $10,000.00 Literacy Grant. “This is the 6th year that we have received a grant from the Elkes Foundation. We are always very happy to receive this grant. We are a non-profit that is comprised entirely of non-paid volunteers and this direct-impact grant goes a long way in helping us support our literacy partners nationwide. Every dollar of the grant is going toward the purchase of thousands of copies of the “Cows Can’t” series of books, which will be distributed at no cost to our literacy partners nationwide,” said Diane A. Lee of the 1000 Books Foundation.
“These titles are fantastic and are perfect for the age group that we serve,” said Ms. Lee. “Cows Can’t Jump”, “Cows Can’t Quack” and “Cows Can’t Spin Silk” were created with early readers, ages six weeks to six years, in mind. “Cows Can’t Jump” focuses on actions, “Cows Can’t Quack” focuses on sounds, and “Cows Can’t Spin Silk” focuses on creations. There is also a new title called “Cows Can’t Blow Bubbles” that focuses on shapes. The series features over 50 different animals and has become a staple of early childhood literacy programs nationwide.

Happy Children’s Picture Book Day! April 2, is a celebration of the timeless magic found within the pages of illustrated stories.

Pioneering authors and illustrators such as Randolph Caldecott and Beatrix Potter paved the way for the genre, enchanting readers with their whimsical tales and captivating artwork.

Hi guys, my name is Goblin Jor and I am eleven years old. This coming fall, I will be in the 7th Grade. The 1000 Books Foundation asked me to write an article about the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten early literacy challenge. Here are ten (10) books that I remember my parents reading to me and my thoughts on each book. The books are not ranked in any particular order. I want to thank my parents for reading to me a lot when I was a baby because I feel that it really helped me in school. I also want to thank all my teachers for helping me learn.

Yes, No, Little Hippo by Jane Belk Moncure
Yes, No, Little Hippo by Jane Belk Moncure is personally one of my favorite books because it’s a book about safety. Little Hippo is very adventurous and likes to try different things, but his family warns him of the dangers. For example, jumping on the bed, climbing on a chair, and riding his bike too fast down a hill. Little Hippo finally learns his lesson and learns about going to a park to have fun. Little Hippo also learned key life essentials for instance; stay away from strangers, pick up your toys so nobody falls, Little Hippo knows his home address and doesn’t play with matches. |

I am an Ice cream Truck was one of my favorite books because when I was younger I loved ice cream (I still do). Also I remember all the aspects of a sundae or ice cream has, but my main memory that I have about this book by Ace Landers is pushing the bottom left wheel when my Dad would read it to me and I could listen to the ice cream truck’s song while my Dad would read I am an Ice cream truck. |

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems is an informative yet funny book that can help children to not let Pigeons drive Buses. Overall, I really enjoyed my Dad reading me this book because of the silliness in the book. There is never a single part in this book that doesn’t keep you entertained. |

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
I remember the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I remember The Giving Tree because this book taught me just how much my mother (and father) love me. I’m pretty sure the Giving Tree is supposed to be my mother. The Giving Tree gives the little boy so much his entire life. This book was also conveniently the 1000th that my parents read to me for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. I loved the giving tree a lot because I felt that the tree was very unselfish and reliable to the boy who became a man. |

Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
The children’s book Kitten’s First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes is a book that I recommend because the kitten seems to believe that the moon is a delicious bowl of milk, when it is really just a moon, but I appreciate how hard the kitten tries to get the milk and she is very determined. Finally, when the kitten returned to the top step, she saw a beautiful thing; a bowl of MILK! This book is also a book that I recommend because this book won the Caldecott Medal. |

Little Bear’s Little Boat by Eve Bunting is a magical, fantastic book about a little bear who loves to ride around in his little boat, fish, lay down and just sit in it. One day, Little Bear grows and grows and grows so he can’t use his boat anymore. Fortunately, Little Bear gives his red boat to another little bear so he could have the same experiences little bear had. Little Bear makes the other bear promise when he grows bigger that he will give the boat to another growing bear and the bear agrees. I would compare this book to The Giving Tree the most out of any book on my list because both of the books are giving something away. |

I loved the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? By Bill Martin, Jr. because first and foremost I got this book from my Uncle Rick and the second reason I like this book is because this book shows multiple perspectives of different animals and the color of each animal like; Brown Bear, Red Bird, Yellow Duck, Blue Horse, Green Frog, Purple Cat, White Dog, Black Sheep, Goldfish, and Teacher. |

Biscuit Loves the Library by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
Here are two reasons why the book Biscuit Loves the Library is such a great book. My first reason is because Biscuit goes to a Library which is a quiet and safe place for everybody so they can do their work, study check out fiction, nonfiction, historical, mysteries, Science Fiction and many more genres! My Second and Final reason is because Biscuit is taught how fun of a place the library can be and Biscuit has a great time finding the puppets and the perfect book to read. I will always remember Susan, my librarian because she always helped me and my parents find awesome books to read to me. |

Just Critters who Care by Mercer Mayer
Just Critters who Care is an elaborate, fantastic book and also one of the best books I read when I was younger because of these two reasons. First, the care that critters show for the old bunny who lives at the spooky house and when the critters Dad says that no one has helped the old bunny even though she is not feeling well and they go to her house to help her and when the critter hits the ball into the old bunny’s yard. The Second reason is the “Message”. If you don’t know what I mean by message let me tell you the message in this book is just caring for someone could really make a change in the world and it is just a kind thing to do. |

Teddy Bear’s Fun to Learn First 1000 Words by Nicola Baxter
If you have been counting, this is actually book 11. My Dad would open up different pages of this book, point to pictures, and I would have to guess what he was pointing to. This book really helped me learn how to speak and identify what common everyday items are. I highly recommend that you get this book or something similar to share with your child. |
