Here they are, my last 6 purchases from Amazon.

New lights! I haven’t tried these yet but I feel like I have been searching for the perfect lights for so long. I really hope these work out.

This is to be used to hold a reflector. I’ve been taking more pictures outside and had really great success using the light reflector but sometimes I can’t get someone to hold still while I use it. I hope this adapter helps with that. No more yelling at my husband for not holding still.

This tripod is everything. The only thing I find is that I can’t use it on an incline. But, it’s portable, easy to carry, easy to set up quickly and easy to move around once it’s in full use. So this, I highly recommend.

The rest of the items are things I needed to organize.

I use to store and still sometimes store items in crates that I found or boxes that have been handed down to me to “organize” my tools, paint and other miscellaneous items. It had been years of organizing the same way and found that it was not efficient. I had to pull all the contents out to find one thing. It was getting ridiculous to fix or find things I needed fast. So this large tool box really worked out. Now I’m organized and efficient.

This item was for my husband, I own most of the tools in the house and my husband owns all the tools in the car. He had this ugly red box with old rusted tools that I could not stand to look at every time I opened the back tail gate of our car. So I replaced it with this more slick tool box that contains most of the tools he already owned. It was perfect and he liked it.

And finally, this massive trunk that’s suppose to be used for camping or fishing… I don’t remember. I use this trunk to house all of our items that live in our truck. From the car jack to the my sun umbrella. We no longer have things sliding around behind our back seat. This is another recommendation.

I thought I took tons of pictures in Wisconsin, turns out I was in Awe the entire time, so I only have a few to share.

An amazing museum to say the least. I tried my best to capture the essence of this place. And no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t. It was seriously that grand.

Past downtown Milwaukee and towards the Milwaukee Art Museum this is the view you will see.

We had a few beers and food? Yes food attached to the drink. It was actually tasty.

I mean is was scrumptious!

The reason we travelled to Milwaukee Wisconsin. Giving a small class at this year’s LULAC national convention.

Made it out to Racine Wisconsin to visit family.

Don’t let the amazing Lake Michigan fool you. It was cold, notice everyone on the beach not so much in the water.

I just want to mention that we were able to travel to the LULAC convention because our partnering friends at Walmart.

Thank you Milwaukee. You will forever be a lesson to me. Before you judge, experience.

Happy 40th. Thought I could write you a letter. Truth is I don’t know how to do this. I’ll start with a few updates. So, Nikki is going to a high school of her choice. You wouldn’t believe it but she has that patience gene. She gets fusturated and upset with the kids but nothing like all these other little monsters. If I could call it, she for sure is more like you at this age. She likes hanging out with her friends. Shes found a group of friends who fit her well, unique just like her. Nia I think is struggling a little bit more than the others. I can’t imagine her struggle, to lose your mom at the age you need her most, fresh out of her shell trying to find herself. No need to worry sister, she has a whole two families behind her. She has leaned into Delia a little more. She calls and ask for what she needs. I just want her to know to never stop calling. Natalie, oh geez! You know how Khristina has stepped into behaving more like a sister than a niece. Well, Natalie has also stepped into that roll. She is just as loving as you. She doesn’t care to tell us when she loves us. After your passing it was the hardest thing in the world to watch her struggle. She wanted so bad to be ok and the reality was just too much. But I know like you know, she has pushed and pushed to come this far. The girl is

strong Erika. You would be so proud of Jacob right now. He has come along way but He is going to need guidance every now and then, please show him the way. Keep giving him hints of inspiration. Light the way for him. Oh Johnny boy. He is still so little. It happened so fast for him. He does ask sometimes so that we can confirm it. It also turns out you were right, the kid is smart. Mom said something the other day that still has me thinking. She told me she is afraid he is going to get to attached to her and asked what would be of him when she also leaves for the eternal life. Mom misses you. After singing happy birthday you could hear the pain in her cry. She keeps busy. Rosa has given her a job to help pass the time. Rosa has also been busy with Tiago. She’s traveling more and taking life as it comes. Her kids are doing good. She has one left in school and she’s done. As far as Mari, the girl has done a 180. After your passing it was hard to ignore all of the things that were happening to her or around her. Her girls also feel the change. Her shift and change are unrecognizable. Not the same as before, this change is different. As Rosa digs deep for inner peace, love and acceptance, Mari has gone outward. She isn’t leaving it to chance. She is pushing the boundaries. Moving clouds and mountains for the things she believes in. Both filling their Ora with good. As for me, I miss you. Im no longer sprinting out of bed at night or biting down on my tongue in my sleep. But I do still have the urge to ram my foot against the wall. Sometimes I feel it would be easier to deal with physical pain. The truth is still a hard pill to swallow. Your physical presence is truly missed. Your quick witty remarks are irreplaceable. Your voice. I just want to hear your voice. I miss you sister. I love you

So here are my last 5 purchases.

Starting with this camera sleeve. It didn’t work out for me because it was a tight fit on my camera. I own a Cannon and this must have been for a Nikon with a large lens. I truly thought it would have a little more give to the structure of material.

The Record player so far has been one of my favorite purchases. I had been collecting a few vinyl records. Among some of those vinyls records I have a few Disney records with recordings of some of the Disney licensed stories I had to listen to the recording and thus is why I purchased it.

As for the wooden car train set. It was actually for my nephew. I bought the matching track set during the Black Friday sales on Amazon and intended to use as a Christmas gift. It sat in a corner for a while and so I just decided to buy the train set and give it to him. Now that I think about it, I should have saved it for his birthday.

The Amazing Grass Superfood was an impulse buy. I asked a friend about the supplements she used and she said this was the stuff she used to get her nutritions in for the day. Turns out it’s an acquired taste.

The Ball Head Mini I bought to add to my ring light. It’s used to mount large cameras like the one I use. I’ve yet to use the actual attachment because I don’t actually record on my DSL camera. I use my iPhone and have since purchased a few gadgets. I’ll share those purchases next time

So, I’ve “joked” about hating the summer months. How it’s just the hardest thing to go from my house to the car without needing a liter of water and time to recover. As I’ve aged, direct sunlight for long periods of time have either made me physically ill or have obvious effects on me, like getting a heat rash where small bubbles of fluid form around my hands. Although this last time it actually happened underneath my lips and above my chin. It was an immediate skin reaction walking under the sun for maybe 30 minutes. For a moment it scared my mom because it appeared suddenly.

My trick is to always try and cool myself down before I overheat. Below is a list of ways I do this and of a some of the things I use.

1.    Always, always carry a fan. A small splash of water to the face and few flicks of the wrist with a paper fan can have immediate refreshing effects.

2.    Try to keep a small cup of ice chips with a little bit of water nearby. As the ice melts, keep sipping the water. You will keep from dehydrating and stay cool at the same time.

3.    Use water-based sunscreen and lotion for your face, body and hands. If you are not at the beach or trying to get a tan, then why are you using heavy lotion? Wash your face at least once throughout the day if you are going to spend more than 4 hours outside in the heat or under the sun. This will help you get rid of dirt and afterwards you can reapply sunscreen. Which leads me into this, forgo the foundation. Use waterproof eyeliner and mascara and use water wipes to wipe away any dirt buildup from outside.

4.    My saving grace is a small travel spray bottle of essential spearmint or eucalyptus oil diluted with water. A few sprays to the back of the neck feels euphoric when you begin to feel as if you are going to overheat. But when I have forgotten my spray bottle at home or in the car, I usually break out my infused towelette of lavender and eucalyptus. It helps with the heat and also tends to calm me.

5.    Buy yourself a sun umbrella. We all worry so much about protecting ourselves from the rain that we forget the danger that can actually come from overheating and the sun’s rays. I’ve had mine for about five years. It’s holding strong. I’m just in search for one that I can fit into my purse.

6.    Obvious, but just a reminder. You don’t have to be outside under the burning sun and sweltering heat. Spend time outside early morning or late afternoon when the sun is setting. Be smart about it. Due to the climate destruction mankind has caused the sun’s rays can be dangerous if it’s something you are not used to.

I last left you off with these words: “I had learned to take care of myself, well mostly.”
Here is the mostly.

At around the age of 15 I learned how to get what I needed to “survive.” I use quotations because what I needed to survive wasn’t actually life or death. It was day-to-day living. I had figured out how to live day-to-day without feeling too out of control. So, I used guys. That simple.

I was a girl who wasn’t in the best of places with her family. Yes, not even her mom, and I needed to survive. I wasn’t going to take advantage of my friends because I already knew what that felt like and didn’t want to do the same. So, I did it to guys.

I took what I could from my relationships with guys. They wanted companionship and I needed clothes, shoes, food, feminine care products, money for school lunches, rides to and from school, and to be able to pass the time, before I had to absolutely make it home. Since home wasn’t my favorite place to go when my mom was home, I spent most of my time with either friends or guys. I just made sure to make it home before 7 a.m. Otherwise I risked my mom showing up at my friend’s house and getting into trouble because a.) I wasn’t there at my friend’s but instead with a boyfriend or b.) I hadn’t been home in days and my mom was worried.

To wrap this chapter of my life and the series of setting my past a blaze I will leave you with two different instances of my admissions. I just want you to know that these are not my proudest moments and that I don’t get a kick out of thinking about them now. But it is something that happened. It is what my life thus far at that point had led to and it is part of my past.

I’ll start with Bobby – not his real name. Bobby was smart, tall and handsome. Everything a girl wanted in a boy. But not this girl. I cared that he was docile, older, had a job, was no longer in high school, and was interested in me. I first met him through a mutual friend and we quickly began dating. He spent most of his time at work since he had just dropped his college classes. After work, he would wait for me to take the 2-hour bus ride to his house on the other side of the city, or spend the hour picking me up from school when I wanted to ditch because I couldn’t stand being at school. 

We lasted about 2 years together until he finally told me he had maxed out his credit cards and was spending way too much on me. Granted, I understood what he meant. I was taking advantage of his good will. Instead of simple shoes from a regular department store like Sears or Kmart, I made sure to hit the mall and the stores inside the mall like Foleys and Dillard’s. He paid for the cost of having a pager (beeper) attached to the side of my hip, the new CDs for the portable CD disk player he gave me, and the dollars in my pocket for school lunch money. Thinking back on it now, he was way too nice. And I do regret that at such a young age I did help him accumulate debt.

Lastly, here is the story about Danny. Danny was a rough around the edge’s kind of guy. I liked Danny. Again, he was tall, smart and handsome. He had the ability to MacGyver anything electronic. I met Danny around when I was maybe 16. He was a friend of my best friends’ boyfriend at the time. Again, I liked that he was attractive enough, but I was more interested in what he could offer me monetarily. You see, Danny was a little slyer than Bobby. And when I met Danny I was actually dating Bobby. 

I didn’t take too much of an interest in Danny at first but I knew he liked me based on the first day we met. After he heard about the end of my relationship with Bobby he pursued me. I led him on with an open invitation and with the understanding that I was a girl who would need to be taken care of because I didn’t jump into just any relationship. 

I was a great companion until you stopped taking care of my needs. 

Well, he followed through for a little while until he didn’t anymore, so I moved on. 

After I had moved on he had another relationship and became a father. But then he came back… he told me how he wasn’t ready to be a father, but that he now had father duties and wanted a “real” relationship. So stupid, young, and naive I accepted him. But as you must know by now, my thinking didn’t change. I held an open invitation with the understanding, you guessed it, that I was a girl who would need to be taken care of because I didn’t just jump into any relationship. Well, this worked and lasted for maybe a few months. And then reality hit me in the face like a ton of bricks all at one moment. 

We were at the mall in search of a few items for myself when we passed by an Old Navy. He walked into the store and straight to the kid’s clothes section. It was kind of an amazing father gesture, but I knew I had to distance myself fast. I couldn’t be bothered to be with someone who had someone else in his life who could also command his attention, mind and money – even if that someone else was his own child. 

So, there you have it. This is the end of my “setting my past ablaze” series.

Not just because they are fast, but because there is a lot of intuition involved in being able to drive a fast car safely/correctly. There is a fine line between adrenaline-infused excitement and being terrified. I’ve been in car with a driver who had no idea how to drive a fast car and well, it was terrifying. A muscle car isn’t meant for everyone. The same way an extend cab pick-up truck isn’t meant for everyone. 

Way back in my teen days I used to hang out on a long stretch of road that people would use to hold drag races – in the outskirts of Houston. It was stupid, I know. Especially because the cars being raced were almost always unfit to compete against each other. These cars were being modified to push their engine’s limit in order to hit top speeds. They were being pulled apart by amateurs in home garages to be raced down an unsafe road with bumps and potholes. I stopped going after watching a car spin due to a cocky driver’s error. But I never lost the love I had for fast cars.

In high school for the first few months it was me and very few familiar faces. I wanted to seek some form of guidance from the girls I already called friends. They were girls I knew and hung out with regularly. One had a car and the other worked mostly nights, so she spent her days sleeping. I didn’t want to go to school, so I quickly fixed that issue by skipping school to go visit my friends. I soon realized hanging out with them wasn’t going to work.

First, because one friend spent most the day asleep and the other friend – the one with a car – kind of sucked at being a friend. I often slept over at her house because she had her own bedroom and her mom gave her a lot of leeway. She once left me at her house babysitting her younger brother to visit another friend. Another time, when I stayed over at her house on a Sunday, she disappeared on me while I was sleeping. The only reason I had stayed was because I thought she was going to at least take me home the next morning so I could go to school. Well, when I woke up Monday morning she was gone – and so were my shoes. She had left me again, but this time she had also taken my shoes without even asking if she could borrow them.

Now that I think about it, I don’t think she liked me. I needed new friends or at least to find a different high school. Both of those things happened eventually. But first, my new friends. 

“Hey! Psssst! Hey.” – I hear someone whisper, but not really because they are really trying to get my attention. I turn around trying to see which girl behind me is talking to me. 

“Where are you from?” – She asks.

I look at her and try to smile lightly because I understand this is the kind of question that can get you into a fight if you don’t answer correctly. 

“From the other side.”  – I answer. 

The other side indicates the other side of the train tracks right next to the middle school. These are the train tracks we have to cross over to attend that high school. Those train tracks are what separates my neighborhood from the rest of the outside world. Many a fights have taken place at those train tracks without an obvious cause. That you simply lived on that side or this side was cause enough a lot of times.

“Oh! By where?” – She asks with a softer tone. 

“By the new elementary school.” – I reply 

“Martinez?” – She tries to confirm.

“Yeah.”

Just like that I had new friends. 

She herself had an older sister and a host of other friends. It didn’t take long for me to make more friends, and a few enemies. These girls were much older than me. At 17 and 18 they had a lot more life lessons under their belt than me. I was only 14.

Pretty soon I was hanging out with them on weekends and staying at their houses skipping school. We would leave the school around the same time all the time. Getting picked up by different friends and so on. They taught me my first lessons on confidence. Accept the world as it is and to do your best to thrive.

They weren’t leaving me behind nor were they unwilling to teach me. I wasn’t just surviving, I learned how to thrive.

It’s unreal how much fun we had around each other all those years hanging out. For sure we had heartaches and maybe a few fights too, but we always moved past the difficult times collectively. Different friends and familiar faces would come in and out of our lives at different times, but the core stayed together. We had a network that was hard to invade and disband. Even now as I write this I feel like that same girl. It was truly an exciting time. I had finally learned to take care of myself… well mostly.

I know that what I am experiencing is all self-provoked. But is it? Can I manage to feel exactly the same by crossing paths with a mirror on a daily basis? Will this self-doubt emerge anyway if I watch TV or read articles with pictures of “attractive” people? Yes.

Yes, it will.

The problem is self-doubt is planted in tiny seeds of inheritance that are given to us at some point in our early life. We all have it. The only difference is the irrigation system we use to water our insecurities from person to person. For some, self-doubt grows faster and stronger than others. It has to be maintained just like a garden. I am better with visuals. Maybe I can best explain this with a visual.

Think of vanity as a garden. I know, vanity isn’t seen as a positive word, but follow along with me. In your garden of vanity there are beautiful flower beds, bright green grass, birds and butterflies – and it’s always the middle of spring. In this well-kept vanity garden everything is known as pretty, beautiful, loving, adored, courageous, passionate, strong and so on. Now, imagine if you lived by those words all the time. It would be great, wouldn’t it? I mean a little vanity garden never hurt anyone.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case for some of us. Some of us allow those self-doubt seeds to grow. They become weeds of self-doubt that can overtake any garden. You know them as guilt, shame, fear, frustration and so on. The vanity garden, or whatever name you choose to give it, must be maintained, cared for, and taken care of always -because somewhere between the feelings of courage and fear, is confidence. 

Confidence is what propels everything forward.

It’s when you take a step regardless of the self-doubt.

Self-doubt is the tight rope in everyone’s life. Confidence is getting on that tight rope even when you know you might fall.

The Houston Ship Channel Tour by Boat. Yes, you can actually tour one of the biggest, busiest ports in the United States by boat. It’s educational and fun. The only catch is you have to reserve your spot(s) months in advance. Because it is one the busiest seaports in the country it is well patrolled by the port authority at all times. I believe they have a visitor’s center as well, but again you have to call and check to see if you can visit in advance. Take a quick walk at Mason Park near Eado Houston and discover a park that only locals know about, mostly because we don’t want this park to become as busy as some of the others in Houston. Mason Park is located past Eado Houston (or East Houston) close to Harrisburg Blvd and 75th Street. Shhh, don’t tell anyone I told you about this. 

Then you can get a quick and delicious lunch at Treebeards. It’s been around as long as I can remember in the same downtown location near Market Square. The first time I ever ate at Treebreads I was in high school. An art teacher took us to the restaurant to get us excited about the art car parade we were participating in that year. A few years later I responded to a job listing from the restaurant and worked there as a cashier. They do have several locations and only open for lunch during the week. You have to go to the original location on Market Square in downtown Houston though – it’s located at 315 Travis Street. If it’s good weather, take your food upstairs and enjoy the view from the balcony. 

While I am on the topic of food let me mention a few other restaurants just in case you do visit on a weekend or after lunch hours and happen to find yourself in downtown Houston. I would suggest you try Batanga on Congress Street just a few yards away from Market Square. They have amazing tapas and the outside patio is intimate enough so that you can be as odd as you want. If you find yourself downtown on a Sunday do yourself a favor and have brunch at Xochi. It’s located inside of the Marriot Marquis next to Discovery Green. They have the best brunch in Houston. They can really convey so many emotions. Every time I attend a performance or concert in Houston’s amazing theater district they always leave me wanting more. Moving a little south towards the medical center let’s head over to the Houston Zoo. Yes, it is pretty great, but not as great as the park outside its doors, in my opinion. Herman Park is one of the most visited parks by Houstonians and for good reason. It’s big and there are a lot of things to do there. For example, you can go to the zoo, visit a beautiful garden across the street, take a train ride around the park, get on a paddle boat, and/or have a picnic dinner while watching a performance or concert, all in one day. All the links to everything I just mentioned are going to be listed below. Seriously, you can spend an entire day in and around Herman Park within walking distance. The entire museum district is right there just crossing the street. Also, don’t forget to visit the Japanese garden at Hermann Park.

One of my favorite things to do in Houston is to visit The Menil Collection. They have a few exhibits and installations that go on rotation every few seasons, but this place just eases my soul. It calls to me. It begs me to come back for more and more and like a good servant to the arts I obey. If you do nothing else on my list please visit The Menil Collection. menil.org

Let me bring you back to some more food before we move west. You are going to want to get some filling food after hanging around The Menil Collection all day. Trust me, you can spend a few hours at The Menil before you realize you missed lunch. I recommend Niko Nikos on Montrose. They have some of the best comfort food in Houston. Years ago, my husband and I started to venture out to find food on the other side of downtown Houston. We live in Eado Houston, which is basically east of downtown, and stumbled upon Barnaby’s. It was a well-kept secret of the westsiders. But the restaurant has since expanded to a few more locations throughout the city in the Heights, Montrose and the museum district. But our absolute favorite location is the one on West Gray near Montrose.  barnabyscafe.com

Make your way a little more west down to Memorial Drive to visit Buffalo Bayou Park. There you will get one of the best views of downtown Houston from the Houston Police Officers Memorial. You will also find many other attractions like art and statues along Memorial Drive and Allen Parkway that are worth a stop. Buffalo Bayou Park is my top choice on this route. It’s a meaningful place for Houstonians and you can’t beat the skyline view. The address is 2400 Memorial Drive.  

I saved the best for last. I understand not everyone likes art or installations, but I do know everyone loves a beautiful garden. Especially if the garden looks like a scene from the movie The Secret Garden. You have to absolutely stop at the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. It is a hidden gem tucked away in plain sight. It’s a step away from the busiest road inside the 610 loop and yet so serene. Here is a link so you can learn more about it:
