So when PGA Tour veteran Davis Love III decided to put his name to one of the four award-winning designs at Barefoot Resort & Golf, he looked immediately to a nearby, venerable Tour venue as his inspiration.

For the Love Course at Barefoot Resort, he thought of Pinehurst No. 2 – with a twist.

The legendary North Carolina layout was the model for the design crew assigned by Love to emulate with much of Love’s signature design at Barefoot Resort & Golf. As such, the greens complexes at the Love Course feature many mounded putting surfaces with large collection areas.

The “twist” comes with the additional visual elements that Love incorporates, and Hole #4 on this design encapsulates it with both a scenic backdrop and a compelling playing option for the big bombers.

Hole #4 at the Love Course is probably the design’s most photographed hole, with the recreated ruins of a 17th Century plantation house that serves as the memorable backdrop to the green for this hole, as well as for Hole #6.

At 294 yards from the tips and 265 from the middle tees, this par 4 is absolutely reachable off the tee for the longer hitters. The challenge comes into play if/when you miss the green – and that’s where the large wall from these ruins becomes a factor. Long hitters run the risk of either driving your ball through the green and against it, requiring a redirected chip save; ricocheting off of it, with your shot’s final resting place a mystery; or going over it, necessitating a flop shot back over the wall to get back onto the putting surface.

With all the possibilities here, one thing is certain: you’ll have lots of fun playing it for the first time, and a lifetime to remember the experience!

This installment of the popular series featured 12 aspiring tour pros putting their skills to the test in an 11-episode elimination competition, and put not only our exceptional golf courses in the spotlight, but also many of the Grand Strand’s popular attractions including the SkyWheel, helicopter and Jet Ski tours, New South Brewery and deep sea fishing, to name a few.

But when it came to the base of the series’ golf operations, the show’s producers couldn’t have been more pleased with Barefoot Resort & Golf as its weekly setting. As they went about planning content and competitions for each week’s episode, “Big Break Myrtle Beach” Challenge Producer Chris Graham was struck by how many creative options our golf courses offered:

“Barefoot Resort is an amazing complex of golf courses, and they’re all very different golf courses. When we go out with our advanced scouts (to plan our challenges), we’d go out, look at the holes and look at the golf courses, and I was very impressed at how different the courses were. You know it’s usually easier to anticipate at these resort-type courses where you kind of get a lot of the same holes, but the courses (at Barefoot Resort & Golf) are just so different.

“It was great for us because we were able to hand-select challenges for particular holes. Like, we’d walk up to it and say, “Wow, this would be great for this challenge” or “Wow, this would be great for this challenge.” And it was really easy for us to have that flexibility to go around the golf courses and have so many different options, so many different great looks, and so many beautiful scenic areas. And we were able to tailor the season for the golf courses, which was great.”

With 72 holes at Barefoot Resort (including The Dye Club), there are a number of memorable holes, but the Fazio 18^th differs.

No. 18

Par 4
Yardage: Platinum tees – 453 yards, Black tees – 427 yards, White tees – 305 yards, Green tees – 292, Gold tees – 284 yards.
Handicap: 12

A par 4, No. 18 plays 427 yards from the black tees. While you make think it’s a straight forward finishing hole, don’t be fooled.

First, the hole almost always plays into the prevailing wind!

Next, for the tee shot you have water down the entire left side. Watch out for those pulled shots because more than likely you’ll end with a splash.

If you happen to hit a great shot off the tee and carry the ball more than 200 yards, you are left with an approach shot that takes some thought. Bunkers sit in front of the green on both sides, with the water continuing past and behind this elevated green.

A safe approach is taking the shot a little longer and farther right. Miss it too far right and you plunge into a severe collection area that leaves you with an awkward pitch.

Don’t quite have the distance off the tee you once had? The smart play here is to take your second shot and give your self a manageable chip. Finish with a one-putt and you have yourself a par!

If you are strong off the tee, the 18^th can be your friend. Struggle with your driver – then you might not be a huge fan.

Tickets are $20 and children 12 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. This event annually attracts more than 6,000 spectators and has sold out 11 consecutive years and usually on the day of the ticket release. Tickets can be purchased at the House of Blues, the Barefoot Resort & Golf and The Dye Club pro shops* and all Ticketmaster outlets. You can purchase your ticket online here.

This marks the 16th consecutive year the event has been played at the Dye Course . Teams consist of a professional golfer, celebrity along with three amateurs.

Tournament kicks off with a Celebrity Long Drive Contest 9 a.m. followed by a Helicopter ball drop on #1 fairway at 9:30 a.m. The tournament tees off at 10 a.m.

2018 Celebrities and Professionals will be announced sometime around March 15, 2018

Early celebrity commitments for this year’s event include ESPN Radio host Mike Golic, basketball hall of famer Rick Barry, hockey legend Grant Fuhr and model and social media personality Paige Spiranac.

Other commitments include former University of South Carolina football stars George Rogers, Sterling Sharpe and Corey Miller, musicians Javier Colon, Edwin McCain and Drew Copeland, and actor/comedian Gary Valentine.

PGA Tour winners Woody Austin and Chris DiMarco are among the professional golfers who have committed to play.

Last year’s event raised $300,000 with all ticket proceeds benefiting the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation, which supports the educational needs of children in South Carolina and the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation either directly or through an endowment that exceeds $3 million.
