So what are these numbers telling us? Through the lens of a wildlife biologist dedicated to protecting large mammal migration, the message to me is clear: We have a problem.

Most of us are familiar with the consequences of wildlife-vehicle collisions. Even if you have never hit a deer you’re sure to have driven past roadkill, whether it was a magpie or a black bear. To address the increasing risks to both wildlife and people, MDT, FWP, and Montanans for Safe Wildlife Passage (MSWP) have formed the Montana Wildlife and Transportation Partnership (MWTP). The Partnership’s primary goal is to create a pathway for wildlife accommodation projects along roads to move forward with input from multiple stakeholders. To achieve this, MWTP has published a GIS planning tool and a project program whereby municipalities, citizen groups, organizations, and others can view wildlife vehicle collision hotspots and wildlife habitat needs to plan mitigation projects. Potential projects could include underpasses, overpasses or exclusion fencing to help funnel animals to safe crossing sites. Through the project program, proposals can be submitted for review by MWTP twice a year in the spring and fall.

The planning tool and project program represent a private-public partnership to foster collaboration between state agencies, scientists, local communities, conservation groups, and funders to reduce the risks of collisions and provide opportunities for wildlife to stay on the move. National Wildlife Federation’s Northern Rockies, Prairies and Pacific Regional staff serve on the steering committee of MSWP and assist with review, communications, and planning of potential projects to help people and wildlife coexist across the landscape.
“The conflict agreement on the West Fork is the culmination of a three-year effort and it highlights the persistence and partnership required to successfully address the prolonged and intractable conflicts that arise between livestock and wildlife,” said Kit Fischer, the National Wildlife Federation Director of Wildlife Programs for the Northern Rockies, Prairies and Pacific Region. “Restoring safe passage for grizzly bears today reflects our commitment to mitigating wildlife conflicts over the last 20 years. It’s exciting and inspiring to witness how this market-based approach has opened up new conservation opportunities across the West.
“As impressive as 1.6 million acres is, the Wildlife Conflict Resolution program is just getting started, and we are poised to double the amount of acreage in the next five years,” said Bob McCready, Wildlife Conflict Resolution Program Manager with the National Wildlife Federation.
Until now, grizzly bears have often been relocated or removed from the drainage when conflict with livestock occurs. Yet non-lethal management strategies to deal with grizzly bear conflicts and low-stress livestock handling offers an alternative solution.
Public land grazing agreements can provide an equitable solution for ranchers and wildlife interests. In coordination with federal land managers, the Federation negotiates with livestock ranchers to either retire public land livestock grazing allotments or develop management agreements that eliminate chronic conflict with wildlife, especially grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and bighorn sheep and anadromous fish such as salmon and steelhead.

This market-based approach recognizes the economic value of public land livestock grazing permits and fairly compensates ranchers for their public land grazing leases. This approach has proven a successful model across the west in resolving conflicts between livestock and at-risk wildlife.
In the West Fork of the Madison, the National Wildlife Federation partnered with a local ranch in a 12-year agreement to deal with grizzly bear conflict. The contract incentivizes the ranch to use non-lethal management techniques and actively manage their livestock to avoid those conflicts while also supporting a family ranch and the local economy. NWF partnered closely with the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and the Property Environment Research Center to complete the agreement.
The use of non-lethal management techniques and shifts in livestock management in the West Fork of the Madison demonstrates how the Wildlife Conflict Resolution program has evolved and expanded over the two decades since it started. It was initially launched in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, with a focus on a market-based approach that negotiates payments to ranchers to waive their grazing privileges to graze public land allotments where there are acute conflicts with one or more species.
Much of our work has addressed conflicts between livestock, grizzlies, and wolves, but also conflicts that impact bighorn sheep, bison, native trout and salmon, and even rare plants. These agreements are completely voluntary and are not about getting rid of public land grazing, but about giving ranchers the resources to shift their grazing away from high-conflict wildlife areas. Since the program has gained momentum we have negotiated these agreements across Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico, in addition to Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.
The removal of public land grazing, even at the low levels produced by the Wildlife Conflict Resolution Program, has been at the heart of numerous conservation debates. One of the most often heard is speculation about the potential for these allotment retirements to accelerate the development of private ranch land. Yet a recent report released from the University of Wyoming confirmed that grazing retirements have not led to landscape fragmentation, such as the further subdivision of land for real estate development.
“The future of ranching is changing and we are confident that the success of these agreements will continue to serve as a new model for addressing conflicts on public lands across the West while allowing the continuation of vibrant, sustainable, and profitable ranching operations,” McCready concluded.
Across the years, the Wildlife Conflict Resolution program has engaged in research and strategy development to address diverse issues, from tribal grazing lease conflicts to the planned reintroduction of wolves in Colorado.
“The outcomes have been as unexpected as they are exciting,” said Fischer. “For example, wolves have found their way naturally to Colorado from Wyoming and at least eight wolves, including 6 new pups, were located near North Park, Colorado in 2021 – the first successful litter of pups born in Colorado in over 80 years.”

Yet conflicts persist between cattle and wolves, and our strategies to successfully coexist with wildlife must continue to evolve, he added.
Recent work has expanded to northern Montana, with the Blackfeet Tribe, culminating in an agreement that would curtail grazing and further protect one of the most intact native grasslands and diverse ecosystems in North America. The six tribal grazing leases bordering Glacier National Park’s eastern boundary are collectively named the Chief Mountain Unit (Ninnaastakoo) and span some 24,000 acres. This wildlife-rich region is home to elk, mule deer, grizzlies, wolves, and abundant bird life.
Bighorn sheep also benefit from the retirement of voluntary grazing allotments. The iconic herds that dotted the western landscape have been close to disappearing due to various threats, the most serious of which is a disease-causing bacterium carried by their domestic counterparts: Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae. This fatal respiratory pathogen can quickly lead to the demise of 90% of an entire herd in a few short months. In Colorado’s San Juans Mountains, in the Weminuche Wilderness, Federation negotiations are yielding significant successes for bighorn sheep.
McCready described the process: “The Federation spent years negotiating with a sheep rancher to retire a permit to graze domestic sheep in an area that posed a serious threat to one of Colorado’s three most important bighorn sheep herds.” Bighorns in the San Juans have long battled disease issues and by reducing the disease vector, the stage was set for a recovery plan. The Federation has retired the first of these high-conflict grazing permits and the same team continues to work to retire domestic sheep permits on as many as 20 additional domestic sheep grazing allotments in the San Juan range that threaten other critically imperiled bighorn sheep herds.

]]>Bighorn sheep are an iconic species that historically inhabited a broad range of the western mountainous regions of North American, stretching from southern Canada to Mexico. Named for their dramatic, curved horns, they are renowned for a “ram-bunctious” mating ritual. In this noisy competition, two males charge each other at full speed, reaching up to 40 miles an hour.
The sound of bashing horns creates a crack that can be heard a mile away. Yet, while they might bash heads during the rutting season, bighorn stick together to confront danger, standing in groups, facing different directions, which allows them to keep watch on their surroundings—and predators.
Regardless of their efforts to stay safe, these magnificent herds have flirted with disappearance due to various threats, from loss of habitat, to diseases carried by their domestic counterparts. Populations occupy less than 15% of their historic range and remain under continuous threats.

While herds have begun to recover with the help of conservation efforts, they are still in big trouble, especially in regard to disease issues. For this reason, the National Wildlife Federation continues to put a conservation focus on bighorn sheep, with innovative approaches and sustained investment.
Unfortunately, Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, an often fatal respiratory pathogen, has proven difficult to eradicate in wild sheep. A single contact between a domestic and bighorn sheep can lead to the demise of 90% or more of an entire herd in a few short months.

One such approach creates separation between wild and domestic sheep on public land through voluntary grazing allotment retirements.
“This work has been immensely successful, and thanks to a network of generous supporters, we have retired over 1.5 million acres of conflict grazing areas over the past twenty years, protecting dozens of bighorn sheep herds that faced risk of disease die-offs.”
The most recent success story began eight years ago, in the Tendoy Mountains of southwest Montana. The National Wildlife Federation worked with partners to retire two critical domestic sheep allotments, in Indian Creek and Bear Canyon. In addition, the team secured several retired allotments south of the Tendoys in the North Beaverhead Mountains that also posed a significant risk of disease contact.

Bighorns in the Tendoys had long battled disease issues and by reducing the disease vector, the stage was set for a recovery plan. However, the path to wildlife recovery isn’t always a straight one. Biologists determined that the herd would never fully recover if the disease remained among the herd. That led the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to approve a controversial plan for hunters to kill the remaining 50 animals in the Tendoys with a goal to ultimately replace those sheep with disease-free animals from elsewhere in the state.
An exciting chapter in this project unfolded this year, on a crisp, winter morning at the mouth of Muddy Creek, near Lima. Biologists with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks unlatched the door of an animal trailer containing 27 sheep, including two lambs, captured from Wild Horse Island on Flathead Lake.
The sheep bolted from the back of a trailer into a vast meadow, dashing toward the prime habitat in the mountainous terrain, where they’ll find their new home. All the animals were fitted with GPS collars, allowing biologists to track their movements and ensure that they are adapting to their new surroundings—and hopefully staying clear of resident mountain lions.
Next year we hope to build on our successes when biologists will transplant an additional 25 animals to the Tendoys, growing the new, disease-free herd so it will flourish and expand. The National Wildlife Federation has invested nearly $500,000 into the reintroduction of bighorns to their historic range, with additional sustained and generous support from individual donors and various conservation groups, including the Montana Wild Sheep Foundation and the national Wild Sheep Foundation.
The work that we began in the Tendoys eight years ago has restored a legacy to our western landscape. While ranchers can acquire a grazing permit, domestic sheep carry a number of pathogens that can cause die-off, threatening most of or even all of these iconic Bighorn herds. These die-offs have already claimed many of the herds that rely on the San Juan range. Across the West, this issue has led to at least an 85% reduction in the areas occupied by bighorn sheep.
Unlike with Covid-19, which has a vaccine, there is neither a vaccine nor treatment that will solve the problem. As a result, our only solution is separation. In humans, the CDC recommendation is 6 feet of separation, but for bighorn sheep, the scale is measured in miles. The research tells us that this is the only way to sufficiently reduce the risk of disease outbreaks that have decimated wild sheep throughout North America.

Complex challenges require creative solutions. So when public land domestic sheep grazing allotments overlap with or are very close to herds of bighorn sheep, the National Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife Conflict Resolution Program found an opportunity. Our approach works with interested ranchers.
Together, we negotiate a fair-market price for domestic sheep public land grazing allotments in exchange for the retirement of the ranchers’ right to graze that allotment. A recent example is the Endlich Mesa domestic sheep allotment, just a few miles from one of Colorado’s highest priority bighorn sheep herds. This herd roams over 200,000 acres of the remote Weminuche Wilderness Area.
The Federation team reached out to rancher J. Paul Brown, who holds the permit to this grazing allotment and successfully negotiated the sale price to retire this permit. As a result, the 11,000-acre Endlich Mesa grazing allotment will never be grazed again. This high elevation plateau with lush vegetation, cliffs, and plenty of water, absolutely perfect habitat for bighorn sheep.
Engaging ranchers who hold permits for high-conflict grazing allotments in this voluntary, market-based approach is a win-win. It recognizes the economic value of livestock grazing permits and fairly compensates livestock producers for retiring their leases while also meeting wildlife conservation goals by removing livestock from these high priority areas. As one rancher who worked with the Federation to retire another allotment near Aspen, Colorado, said: “It was an opportunity that came up for me – it was good for the bighorn sheep and it was going to work for me.”
It has also had 20 years of success. Program manager Bob McCready noted, “So far, we have retired over 1.5 million acres of public land grazing permits, an area the size of Delaware and our goal is to retire another million acres over the next three years. The fact that we are on track to meet this goal, speaks volumes to the momentum we’ve built over the last few years.”
But our work is not done. Working to remove livestock from public land grazing where there are serious conflicts with wildlife takes time and the support of Federation members. And up until this year, when the National Wildlife Federation finalized the retirement of the 33,000 acre Upper Crystal River grazing allotment, 2000 domestic sheep could be found roaming this fragile landscape between the months of July and September.
Unfortunately, domestic sheep carry a number of pathogens that if transmitted to bighorn sheep, can cause the die-off of most or even all of that bighorn herd, something that occurred in the Eastern and Western Snowmass Bighorn herds in the Elk Range in the late 1980s. At that time, the total size of the two herds numbered over 400 individuals, but after likely contact with domestic sheep, the herd experienced an all-age die, the effects of which persist to this day.
The good news is that the eastern herd is slowly recovering, numbering approximately 200 individuals, but the western herd is languishing at approximately 60 animals and continues to decline. Although somewhat speculative, it is possible that this herd was re-infected with another strain of the pathogen causing another die-off event.
The only effective strategy to address this conflict, is to create separation between domestic and wild sheep. The approach taken by The National Wildlife Federation’s Wildlife Conflict Resolution Program is to negotiate a fair-market price with interested ranchers who hold domestic sheep public land grazing allotments in exchange for retiring their right to graze that allotment.
In the case of the Upper Crystal Allotment and the Snowmass Bighorn herd, the Federation staff approached the permit-holder Joe Sperry and negotiated the retirement of his permit. As Joe said, “this was a good business decision for me and a win-win. My sheep had gotten a lot of attention and with the money I received from NWF, I was able to buy another permit for an area farther away from Bighorns which makes the wildlife people happy.” The outcome is that the only domestic sheep allotment in the Elk Range has been removed virtually eliminating the threat of pathogen transmission to wild sheep.
This National Wildlife Federation approach is a completely voluntary strategy and in our view, provides an equitable solution for ranchers who hold permits for high conflict grazing allotments while also meeting wildlife conservation goals by removing livestock from these high priority areas. This market-based approach recognizes the economic value of livestock grazing permits and fairly compensates livestock producers for retiring their leases. After twenty years of success, the National Wildlife Federation has established a new national model for resolving intractable conflicts between livestock and wildlife habitat, retiring to date over 1.5 million acres of public land grazing permits, an area the size of Delaware.

Part of the Upper Rio Grande valley ─ one of the most intact wildlife landscapes in America ─ the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests are home to amazing wildlife such as Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, herds of elk, mule deer, and pronghorn, as well as a wide array of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The region also connects a diverse tapestry of human communities which have rich histories, cultures and sacred traditions rooted in the area’s land, water and wildlife. Safeguarding the wildlife of the Upper Rio Grande is about more than protecting wildlife: it is about protecting an interconnected way of life that spans back more than 35 generations.
Conserving essential wildlife habitat and key migration routes in the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests is also a critical step in helping address the global wildlife crisis. According to the recent United Nations’ Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services report, up to one million species worldwide are now threatened with extinction, many within decades. The current rate of species extinction is ten to hundreds of times higher than the average rate of extinction over the past 10 million years. In the United States, as many as one third of our nation’s wildlife species are vulnerable to extinction and states have identified over 12,000 species in need of conservation. Protecting critical habitat allows wildlife to flourish. Failing to allow wildlife to move on the landscape can threaten ecosystems, human communities, cultural traditions, and spiritual practices.
Officials at the Santa Fe and Carson National Forests are currently revising their forest plans that will set the management direction of each forest for decades to come. It is imperative that both forests adopt strong forest-wide prescriptions to protect critical wildlife habitat and promote wildlife connectivity. They must be encouraged to follow the best available science by continuing to include the following key wildlife management areas in their final forest plans:
Bordering Bandelier National Monument and connecting various western mountain ranges, the Santa Fe National Forest’s “Caja del Rio Wildlife and Cultural Interpretive Management Area” is a place of profound cultural, historical and spiritual significance. Recognized by the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance as one of the state’s “most endangered places,” this management area contains thousands of significant archaeological sites as well as various Native American sacred sites. The Caja del Rio is also home to historic trails, such as the Camino Real del Tierra Adentro, the first major trade route in North America. The management area contains numerous wildlife corridors critical to the survival of various species and will help protect important wildlife habitat for elk, mule deer, black bear, and cougar as well as various birds including western burrowing owls, golden eagles and grey vireo.

Located in the Carson National Forest northwest of Taos, the San Antonio Management Area is comprised of 148,000 acres of rolling grassland surrounded by conifers, ponderosa pines and aspen stands. This area connects to a critical wildlife area in Colorado and is adjacent to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. This region contains important migration corridors for mule deer, elk and pronghorn as they travel between New Mexico and Colorado. It is also an important area for wintering and calving elk herds.
Located north of Taos, the Valle Vidal (“Valley of Life”) Management Area stretches over 100,000 acres of rolling grassland surrounded by conifers, bristlecone pines and aspen stands. Special management of this area will preserve important wildlife corridors, including migration routes used by elk to reach calving grounds in the area. The Valle Vidal is home to one of New Mexico’s largest elk herds and is also home to New Mexico’s state fish, the Rio Grande cutthroat trout.
In addition to protecting these three special management areas, it is also vital for the forest planners to recognize Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep as a “Species of Conservation Concern.” As one of America’s most iconic species, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep symbolize the sheer beauty, strength and spirit of the American West. By recognizing them as a “Species of Conservation Concern,” the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests will continue to support the work of nearby Native tribes which have been working to recover this indigenous species. Historically, Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep were well distributed across the western U.S. ー numbering over a million animals. Due to habitat loss, over-hunting, and disease exposure, by the late 1800s the population of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep drastically declined from over a million to only 45,000 sheep remaining today. Since the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests both provide essential habitat for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, prioritizing the management of bighorn sheep will help ensure the survival of this remarkable species.

It’s vital for anyone who has ever enjoyed hiking, fishing, bird watching, or any other outdoor recreation in the Santa Fe or Carson National Forests to speak up about these forest plans. Where conflicts between livestock and wildlife are prolonged and intractable, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) believes that public land grazing retirements can provide an equitable solution for ranchers and wildlife interests. In coordination with federal land managers, NWF negotiates a fair-market price with livestock producers to retire livestock grazing allotments that experience chronic conflict with wildlife, especially wolves, grizzly bears, bison, and bighorn sheep. This market-based approach recognizes the economic value of livestock grazing permits and fairly compensates producers for retiring their leases and has established an important new national model for resolving conflicts between livestock and wildlife habitat.
This model provides an alternate to litigation and has proven to be extremely cost-effective, averaging $3/ acre. Since 2002, NWF’s Wildlife Conflict Resolution Program has retired over 65 high-conflict grazing allotments across the west totaling more than 1.3 million acres. Ranchers are then able to reinvest the money back into their operation, away from potential conflict.
Most recently, NWF completed the retirement of three grazing allotments in Idaho’s “High Divide” that will eliminate the risk of disease transmission between domestic and wild sheep and reduce livestock depredation by wolves. Disease from domestic sheep has crippled bighorn populations across the west and creating separation between domestic and wild sheep is critical to their survivial.

The Crooked Creek, Mahogany Butte and Cedar Point-Eightmile domestic sheep allotments are vast and consist of 140,000 acres of prime sagebrush habitat in southern Idaho. For the past two years, NWF has been working to reach an agreement on these three allotments as domestic sheep permitted on the allotments pose a significant risk of disease contact to wild bighorn sheep in both the South Beaverhead and the South Lehmhi Mountains.
In addition, these allotments are within priority sage grouse habitat and are located within the “High Divide” wildlife corridor—critical habitat for expanding large carnivore populations that are pioneering East along this unique East-West wildlife pathway located West of Yellowstone National Park. This agreement is unique in that Cedar Point-Eightmile will be retired, while Crooked Creek and Mahogany Butte will be converted to cattle grazing, although at a significantly reduced amount to benefit wildlife. This is a win for wildlife and a win for local ranchers who are able to shift their ranching operation in a way that is more compatible with wildlife.
National Wildlife Federation is working across the west to expand wildlife populations and protect critical habitats. NWF members have played a significant role in this work through our “Adopt a Wildlife Acre” program—for only $3/acre, conflicts on public land can be permanently resolved. We are working across the west and are in the process of finalizing two additional retirements in Colorado to protect struggling bighorn sheep populations. These investments would benefit wildlife and communities across America in a fiscally responsible way by serving as a smart insurance policy against costly extreme weather and climate effects while also providing a down payment on the low-carbon economy of the future.
Natural infrastructure consists of natural or nature-based systems that provide essential services and benefits to society, such as flood protection, water purification, and carbon storage. Such systems can be natural ecosystems, like forests, floodplains, beaches, and grasslands, or they can be engineered systems that use natural materials and are designed to emulate the functioning of natural ecosystems.
What that means is that investing in natural resources along with traditional infrastructure can benefit both wildlife and local communities.

The below examples highlight critical areas where investment in natural infrastructure can make a BIG difference for people and wildlife.
Coastal areas with healthy floodplains, wetlands, dunes, and forests are better able to buffer the impacts of sea-level rise and storms than ecologically degraded areas, and can often self-repair after storm or flood damage. Investing in this type of natural infrastructure along U.S. coastlines can act as an insurance policy or first line of defense for other types of infrastructure, including roads, levees, and coastal communities. Natural infrastructure is often cost-effective compared to hard infrastructure, and can provide benefits for fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, and recreation opportunities.


Climate change is increasing the risk of severe drought and extreme floods in the United States. Conserving and restoring natural systems can be a cost-effective way to reduce drought and flood risk to downstream communities by capturing and storing large quantities of water during rainfall events. One acre of wetlands can store more than a million gallons of floodwater. Compared with conventional water storage projects, like reservoirs, these nature-based solutions also provide multiple community benefits, like recreational opportunities, wildlife habitat, and water quality improvements.
Drought threatens local agriculture and increases the risk of megafires. It is critical that the United States address this threat through investment in the front lines of defense against future disasters – natural infrastructure. Protecting and restoring forests and watersheds helps create more resilient communities and ecosystems in a changing world, and helps protect the $992 billion food and agriculture industry. It also provides communities with clean drinking water and helps support outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing and swimming in inland streams, rivers, and lakes.
The U.S. outdoor economy is worth $887 billion.
This economy and the jobs it supports are bolstered by a remarkable array of wildlife, yet up to one third of U.S. species are at increased risk of extinction. Habitat loss and degradation, invasive species, disease, and pollution all pose threats to our wildlife—threats that are being amplified by a rapidly changing climate. Smart investment in conservation, restoration and natural infrastructure can help reverse America’s wildlife crisis while also supporting healthy ecosystems. Investing in legacy roads and trails, wildlife habitat restoration projects, building wildlife crossings, and removing outdated infrastructure (such as old dams) to improve habitat and public safety will help recover America’s wildlife.

Many recent climate studies show that in addition to reducing emissions, we must also remove carbon from the atmosphere if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. In addition to investing in technologies to achieve reductions, this can be done through climate-smart agricultural and forestry practices.
In 2016, forests sequestered 670 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, and they have the potential to double, or even triple this indispensable service. While forests are not typically considered “infrastructure,” they are worth including in any infrastructure proposal. These resources can act as our insurance policy against the future impacts of climate change, and up-front investment in forest health has the potential to provide invaluable carbon mitigation benefits in a warming world.
Proper forest management also has the ability to reduce the impacts of megafires, which are being exacerbated by climate change. Megafires produce vast amounts of carbon dioxide, which in turn fuel worsening climate change. Investing in forest management can break this bad feedback loop, and maintain existing carbon sinks (where carbon is stored in soils and plant matter). The U.S. Forest Service estimates that between 65 and 82 million acres are in need of restoration just on lands within their 193 million acre national forest and grassland system. U.S. forests account for more than 90 percent of the country’s carbon sink, and maintaining this critical ecosystem service should be a priority.

Our Wildlife Guide shares helpful facts about this species strongly associated with the region and revered by wildlife enthusiasts and sportsmen alike:
Pronghorn are found only in North America. Their natural range extended from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Pronghorn like open plains, fields, grasslands, brush, deserts, and basins. Between the summer and winter, pronghorn migrate between feeding grounds to survive the harsh winter.
According to a National Wildlife Federation report, in Southeast Montana, Northeast Wyoming, and along the Colorado-Wyoming border, pronghorn are vulnerable to energy development and have seen population losses over the last three decades.
As increasing exploration and drilling for natural gas has expanded industrial development in these areas, fences and destruction from fracking are blocking pronghorn migration and restricting their habitat.
Pronghorn are also severely impacted by rising temperatures, drought, and an increase in the spread of diseases due to climate change. As our climate continues to change, these impacts will only become more pronounced, affecting wildlife, economic activity, and outdoor traditions.
Bighorn sheep, reknowned for their unique set of horns, are also a key part of their region’s ecosystem. Our Wildlife Guide notes:
Bighorn sheep live in the western mountainous regions of North America, ranging from southern Canada to Mexico. Their steep mountainous habitat, with ledges sometimes only two inches (five centimeters) wide, provides cover from predators such as coyotes, golden eagles, mountain lions, bears, and Canada lynx.
A recent National Park Service study found that rising temperatures and drought limit vegetation and spring water for bighorn sheep. This imperils the survival of young bighorn sheep, as ewes depend on a daily supply of their mother’s milk.
Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Larry was an avid hiker and Eagle Scout. Those experiences formed the foundation for his love of America’s rich public lands. Larry recognized the value of his own experiences and stepped up personally and with the assistance of his company, eDemocracy.us, to provide resources to protect public lands.
He was first introduced to the Federation’s programs in 2017 by his mother when she told him about the Adopt-A-Wildlife Acre program. Established in 2002, the program aids in negotiations between federal land managers and ranchers to retire livestock grazing allotments on public lands. Ranchers receive compensation for waiving their grazing permits allowing land managers to permanently retire the allotments — a win-win for everyone involved. The program also ensures long-term future for traditional western livestock ranching by shifting grazing practices to landscapes where it is more compatible, giving wildlife such as grizzly bears, bison, and bighorn sheep an opportunity to thrive in a conflict-free habitat.
Just a few days after hearing about the program for the first time, Larry, who had never supported the Federation before, joined the Federation to help close a huge deal on the Cape Horn Grazing retirement in the Idaho Sawtooth Wilderness. The Cape Horn allotment hosts one of the largest populations of bighorn sheep in Idaho — spanning more than 85,000 acres that includes critical spawning habitats for steelhead, threatened Chinook salmon, and bull trout. Because of the incredible efforts of Larry and supporters like you, this area is now protected for generations to come.
This past spring, Larry took his commitment even further when his company, eDemocracy.us, provided a significant matching gift in our first ever grazing retirement in Capitol Reef National Park, a treasured red-rock landscape in Southern Utah. He shares,
“Populations of wildlife are decreasing throughout the United States, and I believe that everyone who spends time outdoors should be doing what they can to protect these populations. The American landscape is gorgeous, and I want to make sure my children can enjoy it fully.”
In addition to his partnership with the Federation, Larry’s also passing his passion to the future generations of his own family. Larry’s son partnered with the Federation’s Garden for Wildlife program by planting trees in Buffalo Park in New York as part of his Eagle Scout project.
