Welcome to the Baked and Awake Newsbrief for Friday January 4th 2019, and today's brief is about an enduring mystery of early British colonization of North America, The Roanoke Colony, just off the coast of what is today North Carolina. The mystery of what happened to this early Anglo American settlement, sponsored in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh, although in name only as we come to find out he never set foot in the settlement in question itself- this at the time nameless band of settlers number ing in the twenties- was lost, when it was "lightly abandoned" for almost two years due to weather and an Anglo-Spanish war involving both nations entire Seaworthy fleets- until 1587, when Captain Francis Drake returned with future Governor John White, of the (about to be marooned for real) 115 member party that was put ashore to look for the survivors (none) of the previous contingent on their way to their own new colony. The Roanokers to be were surprised to be disallowed from returning to the ships, because their intended destination was actually Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, or is today anyway- and that is significantly to the North and would have been closer to other early settlements in Maryland etc. These 115 Colonists, put ashore and left in the charge of Mr. White, Grandfather to the so called "Firstborn Daughter of America" by some, Virginia Dare- were ALL to be lost when they themselves would be left behind (for almost three years!) in this area that had been seen already to have been a bit, shall we say dangerous- as the local native tribes were barely tolerating the British at best at this time in this region, and had in fact killed one in the first 25 hours of their arrival in '87! For, in 1590, when Drake again returned with desperately needed food, medicine, and general supplies for the Sick and Cold when we left them Roanokers- everybody and everything was gone, down to the log structures they were occupying for shelters. On a nearby tree was carved a single word, "Croatoan" the name of a local tribe associated with some fractious interactions with the to them interloping British settlers. This story is an early favorite of mine, and looking back now I can honestly say it birthed my love for conspiracies, for many theories exist that posit explanations for what happened to the first group, and then the Colony proper, all 115 of them including the famous Virginia Dare, of whom legends of her whereabouts and final resting place abound.

And now a Headline and Source I won't necessarily follow up on after this, but you SHOULD- Powered today by my morning review of Slashdot.org. Today's keyword is "Social Media".
From the NYT:
Nellie Bowles and Zach Wichter, reporting for The New York Times:
Joining a long tradition of companies and campaigns that drop bad news on holidays, Facebook on Thanksgiving eve took responsibility for hiring a Washington-based lobbying company, Definers Public Affairs, that pushed negative stories about Facebook's critics, including the philanthropist George Soros. Facebook's communications and policy chief, Elliot Schrage, said in a memo posted Wednesday that he was responsible for hiring the group, and had done so to help protect the company's image and conduct research about high-profile individuals who spoke critically about the social media platform. Mr. Schrage will be leaving the company, a move planned before the memo was released.
Facebook fired Definers last week, after a New York Times investigation published on Nov. 14. "Did we ask them to do work on George Soros?" Mr. Schrage wrote in the memo, a draft of which had circulated online earlier in the week. "Yes." He added: "I'm sorry I let you all down. I regret my own failure here." This is a change from just a few days ago, when Facebook wrote on Nov. 15 that the Times report was full of "inaccuracies." The same day, Sheryl Sandberg, the company's chief operating officer, posted on her Facebook page that she had no idea the company had hired Definers.

Two Headlines and Sources I won't necessarily follow up on, but you SHOULD- Powered as always by my google alerts. Today's keywords are "Marijuana", and "Robots".
November 18, 2018- The Motley Fool, a popular financial advice oriented podcast and blog posts: 3 Marijuana Stock Risks No One is Talking About I read it, it's a good story, and the three areas they mention are worth considering for sure. I won't spoil the story for you though- go check it out at fool.com
Two days ago on November 16th, The Register UK's Andrew Orlowski writes that Google's Parent company "Alphabet gives bipedal robots the Schaft 'cos no one wants to buy its creepy machine maker" This story, I can't call it a report, dismissively describes the demise of the Schaft project, which, along with Boston Dynamics, is also owned these days by our friends over at oh let's just call them Google because we knew them back when. To my eyes this robot sounds like it was an Acqui-hire situation from the start. Conjecture, sure- but I bet all it's best technologies have already been parceled out to the scary af, parkour robot Atlas and its successors, or in fifty other projects we will never hear about. That's cool though, it's all cool, right?
Links to both stories are in the show notes and you can find them by visiting http://bakedandawakenewsbrief.libsyn.com/rss

Hemp History Fact of the Day: 2,000-800 BCE Bhang (dried cannabis leaves, seeds and stems) is mentioned in the Hindu sacred text Atharvaveda (Science of Charms) as "Sacred Grass", one of the five sacred plants of India. It is used by medicinally and ritually as an offering to Shiva.
1,500 BCE Cannabis cultivated in China for food and fiber. Scythians cultivate cannabis and use it to weave fine hemp cloth. Expanding upon this slightly, Bhang is a popular ritually and recreationally consumed coconut milk beverage, consumed to this day, in parts of the world. A Primer on the Brief
Hello and welcome to the third episode of the Baked and Awake News Brief, from the creator of the Baked and Awake Podcast. I'm your Host Steve Cominski, and today I thought I'd take just a few minutes and walk us through my idea for the format of the Brief as it stands today, and by doing so, allow you, through Social media or email at talktous@bakedandawake.com, to assist me by voicing your own thoughts on what you are looking for in a show such as this. To begin, I think it is appropriate to put forward the focus of the show, and that is to bring Super current Cannabis stories and unusual news topics in the vein of those that we sometimes take on in the long form podcast. Basically, the News Brief is intended to be a condensed version of the podcast in terms of bringing you something from the "Baked" files, and something from the "Awake" files, in this case almost daily (I think we'll shoot for something like three News Briefs a week to begin with on M,W,F). I/ we will power the News Brief with a number of Google Alerts I have set up to serve us with a continual stream of new results that lead to stories to investigate. I thought it might be helpful to share with you a few of the, so far rather generalized alerts I am currently receiving, and read a few of the headlines from them, sort of piecemeal, just to give an indication of the type and amount of stories we are dealing with on a daily basis. Keep in mind that these alerts come in sometimes twice or three times a day, usually with a little bit of overlap but mostly new results. The internet is a powerful engine and it churns out new content for us to parse constantly. Let's take a look at a couple of these alert emails and see what's going on, shall we?

Today is November 8th 2018 and I am reporting on the biggest winner of the mid term elections in the United States- Cannabis. Without extending today's commentary to the possibly overshadowing shockwave that is the Resignation/Firing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a well known and powerful opponent of Cannabis legalization now for the literal lifetimes of many young smokers and would be tokers- the biggest takeaway from this week's election results is that Americans will have their weed, and soon. Just two weeks or so into Canada's historic national legalization of everybody's favorite illicit plant, Michigan voters turned out in droves to ram through a recreational cannabis victory. Utah and Missouri, two staunchly red states, each passed Medical Cannabis measures. Add to this the prospect of several newly elected, Progressive as regards Cannabis Governors who just got elected in several other states, and we can safely surmise that the Green Rush will continue to outpace any hoped for Blue Waves or Red Tides across the American Political landscape, with a recent Gallup poll indicating that 66 percent of Americans support full legalization of cannabis.
Facts for this story were provided by Forbes.com, linked in the show notes. We will continue to keep a very close eye on developments in the legalization space, you can count on 2019 being a very dynamic year for Cannabis in all its forms.
And now, since we can't let you leave on a happy note like that and not give you something to keep you up at night- from my usual perusal of Slashdot.org by way of the South China Morning Post's International Edition's Stephen Chen- China's brightest children are being recruited to develop AI 'killer bots' (Paraphrasing the article that is linked in full in the show notes, this somewhat worrying story's highlights are as follows.
Read the full story over at https://www.scmp.com/, and if this is an area of interest for you, it is likely I/we will look at this story and others like it in more depth soon on our long form podcast, Baked and Awake, available in your iTunes app, and everywhere you get your Podcasts.
Until next time, this is Steve Cominski saying smoke indica, do shit anyway..

Host: Steve Cominski
Hello and welcome to the first episode of the Baked and Awake News Brief, an Alexa Flash Briefing about Cannabis News and Headlines from around the world, from the creator of the Baked and Awake Podcast, Steve Cominski.
I'm Steve Cominski, recording and publishing from the beautiful Pacific Northwest where the seasons have officially turned and we are entering the long, wet, winter we love so well up here around Seattle. Thanks for joining me as I bring you a short but impactful update on Cannabis news, and usually, something a little more… UNusual to finish things off. If you like what you hear in the News Brief, I strongly urge you to find me and subscribe to my long form Cannabis and Conspiracies (in air quotes!) show, Baked and Awake. Just search anywhere you're already consuming podcasts, and it should pop right up.
And now- to the news!
With Canada being the second nation in the world to legalize Cannabis, after tiny but admirable Uruguay, I thought it only fitting that our first brief be about some news from North of de Bordah- with the headline Alberta Hemp Farmers see a bright future in wake of Canada's Cannabis Act, and a story from the Calgary Herald written by Amanda Stephenson. Link in the show notes that can be found at http://BakedandAwakeNewsBrief.libsyn.com/rss, I think ;)
Story Highlights:
Reda the whole story at thegrowthop.com
And before we go, I want to let you know that today I am smoking on some of my own home grown Lake of Fire, and that plant is a cross of the famous Gorilla Glue #4 and Cobain Kush. Lake of Fire Strain by Red Eyed Genetics is an indica heavy hybrid that, in the case of my own personal example, has a notable sweet top note to its fragrance, and an always consistent relaxing, mellow, body focused high.
Also- your Alexa is spying on you, so maybe consider turning off the wifi at night so it doesn't start talking to you in your sleep.
As I always say to my faithful listeners over at the Baked and Awake Podcast, have a great rest of your day, and remember to #smokeindicadoshitanyway
