816 – Wrath

Jim and A.Ron put AMC’s The Walking Dead to rest at the end of it’s eighth season, with the finale episode “Wrath”. It’s not the worst episode of TWD, but it certainly isn’t a good one, and it ends on a puzzling conspiracy against Rick perpetrated by his closest friends. There are crazy character flip flops involving Morgan, Eugene, even Jesus and Daryl get caught up in it, and we say, enough. 814 – Still Gotta Mean Something

Jim and A.Ron are here to, sort of backhandedly compliment the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead. It’s one of the better recent episodes, but the unfortunate thing is all of the moments and beats they come really close to nailing here are ones that have been so worn through mindless repetition to the point we’re incapable of feeling anything but boredom. But yeah, Andrew Lincoln, Denai Gurira, and Lenni James really know how to act, and work their professional asses off to sell this material. Oh, and Rat-Faced Jesus has a very satisfying character development. Just two episodes left! See you next week.

813 – Do Not Send Us Astray

AMC’s The Walking Dead served up what A.Ron describes as a top 5 worst episode of all time in “Do Not Send Us Astray”. The show continues to find new lows in its regard for the audience’s intelligence, as they don’t even bother trying to plausibly setup any action set pieces or plot, it just kind of happens because reasons. We have at least five morgalizers at this point. Day turns to night turns to day and Maggie has been pregnant for like ten seasons now. There was a helicopter at some point? I think Father G. went blind earlier? The only thing I know is that we’ll be back for more next week. See you then.

“The Key”, which is the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead continues to erode Negan’s aura of invincibility, as he can’t even keep Rick’s hands off his precious Lucille as he lurches from one insane and pathetic deal to the next. Simon’s had enough, and leads the rest of the Saviors off to war against the Hilltop. Meanwhile, Maggie makes a deal for The Key to the Future for a milk crate full of phonographic records, and Enid openly wonders if anything means anything anymore. You and me both, Enid. 811 – Dead or Alive Or

“Dead or Alive Or” crash lands back to Earth after the pleasant surprise that was last episode, and there’s no “Jadis makes chunky beef chili” aspect to take your mind off things. It’s the saddest traveling road show you’ve ever seen starring Father Gabriel and Dr. Carson. It’s Carol and Morgan morgalize over a young boy’s soul. It’s Daryl losing control over his refugee group because of arguing about the loyalties of Dwight. And Maggie making hard decisions on the Hilltop, which is the most interesting thing about the episode and so of course serves as the “C” plot. Can we get a second helping of that Zombie chili, ya’ll?

810 – The Lost and the Plunderers

Sure, Rick’s back to being a loon, the garbage people are still garbage, and Oceanside has clearly lost their collective minds, but that’s why we said it’s “not half bad” instead of “pretty good”.

802 – The Damned

Jim and A.Ron decry the debacle that was the latest episode of The Walking Dead, “The Damned”. If you liked the episode, I’m happy for you. But this is us explaining why we didn’t. There was a lot of action, but it had not context, and even if it did, a surprising amount was staged and executed so poorly you couldn’t tell if the good guys were winning or losing, even if you knew the objective. Worse, the rampant Morgalizing of seasons past has returned in a big way. This time, they’re hand wringing about what kind of people they’re going to be in the middle of heated gun fights to make it even more annoying. Ya’ll, we’re desperately hunkered down behind an armored car here, taking fire, waiting for a genuinely good episode to shamble over this season. Maybe next week?

801 – Mercy

A.Ron and Jim are a bit divided on this episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, “Mercy”. “Mercy” seems to be the dominant theme of this season, with Rick’s warpath sharply contrasted to Carl’s desire for hope and open handedness. Lots of butt gets kicked this episode, surprisingly the majority of the butt kicked consists of glass panes and not Saviors or zombies. And there are a few head scratching flash forwards/backs/sideways. But just look at that sweet shot of Daryl blowing up stuff real good!

716 – The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

Jim and A.Ron were equally entertained yet ultimately frustrated by The Walking Dead’s season 7 finale, “The First Day of the Rest of Your Life”. Well staged action and CGI stunt tigers get the pulse pounding, but it’s not long before well worn bad habits start to get in the way; a convoluted plot by Negan to once again impress upon Rick that resistance is futile, literal Garbage People, and Sasha’s “I’ll save you from the situation I helped create” heroics, all these unfortunately mire the proceedings. But that’s not our last work on the subject. We’ll be back later this week to wrap up the season, so get your email in before Thursday if you want to be heard!

715 – Something They Need

A decent episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead nevertheless provokes a bunch of questions regarding “Something They Need”. Is Rick’s group really justified in their “take no prisoners, take all guns” approach with Seaside? Has Eugene really turned turncoat? Is Gregory Negan’s “little bird”? Why can’t Grandma McGee pull a gun on somebody proper like? And does Rick know that a man is at his most dangerous when he’s on his knees? Dwight knows. He’s been to the School of Eugene’s Nut Cracker, and shouldn’t be taken lightly when he’s at crotch level. Be careful, Rick, is all we’re saying.

712 – Say Yes

Jim and A.Ron are reasonably pleased with the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, “Say Yes”. After many long years, TWD finally found a way to have a philosophical argument about “why we fight” and “what’ it’s like out there” and “this is the way the world works” that doesn’t actually involve any of those words, and inserts a few new ones, “hope” and “future”. The fact that it goes down between Rick and Michonne, characters with chemistry that we actually care about, makes it that much sweeter. But then there’s some dodgy action, and that whole mess with Rosita, and literal garbage people, and you know? Our feelings are complicated.

Don’t forget! Jim’s throwing a burrito party and everybody is invited! Come by 16-Bit, OTR’s premiere barcade experience between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday, March 18th. 711 – Hostiles and Calamities

Jim and A.Ron point and laugh at poor Eugene in the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, “Hostiles and Calamities”. Eugene fails at lobster, succeeds at Yar’s Revenge, blows up some balloons, puts on a wiz bang science show, and ultimate turns into the bad guy? Yeah right, we’ll believe it when we see it. Meanwhile, Dwight reaches the sad boring conclusion of the Dwight/Sherry saga that began way back in episode 606, “Always Accountable”. Also, A.Ron vents his spleen about Eugene’s direction in the Spoiler Section tucked safely away at the very end of the show.

710 – New Best Friends

Jim and A.Ron slog through a mess of a Star Trek: The Next Generation inspired episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, as Rick negotiates a complicated treaty with the Romulan sub-commander of a garbage world. There’s some good stuff too; some emotional punch with Daryl and Carol, some nuanced Morgalizing from Morgan, and a “have to see it to believe it” Mad Max / Lord of the Rings inspired zombie pit fight sequence. Maybe that’s how TWD is going to roll going forward, pilfering from better sci-fi/fantasty tales? 708 – Hearts Still Beating

AMC’s The Walking Dead entered it’s mid-season hiatus last night with the episode, “Hearts Still Beating”, which had Jim and A.Ron asking if their hearts were still stirred by the drama on screen. Your mileage may vary, but we found it doing just enough to make up for the missteps this season, and promising just enough up tempo pacing that we’re, knock on wood, excited for it’s return in February? That maybe losing more than a 1/3rd of it’s audience in a season will scare the creative and studio types enough to stop dicking around and get serious about bringing this show to some sort of satisfying conclusion. In addition, we talk about mysterious boot person, the reunion of one of television’s most potent bromances, express concern for Maggie’s ripped uterus, and show mock concern about the show’s latest shocking death.

706 – Swear

Jim and A.Ron wonder if it’s all worth it anymore after seeing a historically bad episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, number 706, “Swear”. Aside from being the dreaded single POV focus episode featuring a second-tier character, so much of this made no sense and seemed pointless. From the zombie action sequences involving improbable combinations of dump trucks and sand, to the 538th, 539th, and 540th time we’ve heard one character bemoan the degradation of humanity to another, to questionable directorial and editing decisions, a lot of time and effort was spent to tell us of the existence of a community with an axe to grind against the Saviors that is heavily armed but suffering a shortage of effective warriors. Gee, where ever could we find a place that is disarmed with a crew of killers with itchy trigger fingers? We’re just one broken promise away from getting that creamy peanut butter inside that chocolate folks. Oh, and Heath has gone missing. “PPP” is somehow involved. And Tara has some weird tattoo. And we have feedback! Is this thing on? Is anyone still listening?! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE OUT THERE! THEY AIN’T US! HERE’S NOT HERE!

Oh, Maggie is a boss, of course, tractors are employed in unusual circumstances, Gregory is literally The Worst, Michonne struggles to adapt to a post-Negan world, and the biggest surprise of them all; The Walking Dead writer’s staff deftly juggling no less than three separate plots in a single episode! All of this and more are discussed, including emails from your fellow fans.

The maniacal focus on single plot line story telling is doing real damage, not just to the pacing, but to their otherwise solid and memorable attempts at characterization with Negan and Dwight. Also, WHERE IS TARA AND HEATH?! Did they run into the crew of the S.S. Minnow and decide to take the three hour tour? On a positive note, the show has us really howling for Negan and his Savior’s heads, which is presumably something the show wants us to feel. Mission accomplished. Last night’s The Walking Dead had a lot of moments of genuine tension and real stakes, but it also had a lot of continuity errors and puzzling directorial and editing choices. Which is too bad because it’s central gasp inducing moment was a real bomb. Unfortunately the mid-season finale was kind of blah. It wasn’t especially good, and it wasn’t especially bad, but in the context of wrapping things up for a long hiatus, that means it’s not doing it’s job. Lots of monologing about ideas we don’t care much about between characters we’re not interested, a few really fantastic pieces of writing and performance for Deanna that are undermined by how we feel going into the episode about the character, and more sloppily staged action and set pieces. But, we’re not done! We’ll be back next week to wrap things up and try to generate some excitement for the next half. Hopefully you’ll help out. To say nothing of the strangely detached sense of geography and space, the tedious battle between the pragmatic veterans of Rick’s team and the naive idiots of Alexandria, the lazily crafted action sequences, the massive location oversights, the casual throwing away of of potentially interesting character arcs and developments just for shock value that they’ve been steadily undermining since the moment the episode finished airing. It’s infuriating. Hopefully, next week will be better, because, hey, Lennie James. See you then!

Not much, as it turns out. An experiment with B&W photography that could have been yet another failed attempt at artistry beyond TWD’s reach turned into a vital grounding technique to keep us in sync with an ever shifting time line, and those shifts did a heroes work plastering over some of the plot holes and inconsistencies of the main plot, while also showing important character shifts in interesting ways. And hey, zombies. Lots and lots of visually interesting, disgusting, soft headed zombies.

Night of the Living Dead Review

A blast from the past! Jim and I were originally going to go live with our first TV podcast covering season one of The Walking Dead on AMC, but things happened and we screwed the pooch and we didn’t get off the ground until season four of Breaking Bad, and the rest is history.

Speaking of history, this was recorded in the summer of 2010, and some of this is rough. I think my mic was pointing the wrong way, we were recording in an empty living room with vaulted ceilings so it has more echo than the Batcave, and we were making a conscious effort not to swear (Jim maintained at the time that it was impossible to have a popular “explicit” cast, which… AHAHAHAHAHA!), all of which is lead to an “interesting” podcasting experience. We have a few more “Zombie Drills” in the archive, which we’ll be saving for future installments.

Wow! I know it left some people cold, but for our money, The Walking Dead season four finale, “A”, was firing on almost all cylinders. We got a taught episode with lots of tension, some truly excellent dialog and performances, and some really spectacular gore. It wasn’t perfect, but it was as satisfying an end to this season as we were likely to get. Topics for discussion include A/B path testing, Beth’s Terminus concert, the Passion of the Grimes, tech startups in the zombie apocalypse, and Rick’s Gun Farm 2.0. Mid-Season 4.0 Wrap Up

It was the best of seasons (Internment), it was the worst of seasons (Dead Weight), but while it ended on a very bleak note for our survivors, it nevertheless was a positive and hopeful way to end things from a storytelling and general quality standpoint. After the last two week’s distraction from what was going down at the prison, we return in triumphant fashion with the highly entertaining hour of television that was The Walking Dead mid-season four finale, “Too Far Gone”. And by “triumphant” I mean “a total defeat for everyone concerned,” except for us, the viewer. Seriously, Daryl killed a tank single handedly. This was a pretty good episode of The Walking Dead; unfortunately I don’t think our cast quite matches up this week. First off, some rush hour weather kept Jim and A.Ron from getting together to cast, and we had to hastily assemble a remote recorded cast. We also had some great skit ideas that we couldn’t execute over the remote connection, either. The audio quality is already a few notches below the norm; but then for about 20 minutes in the middle of the feedback it just went to crap and it was beyond our skill to recover.

Just a bummer all around. Usually we’d just re-record the segments that got butchered, but it’s past midnight already so we’re going to war with what we got. Hope you enjoy what did make the cut, apologies to the many people who’s email was lost in the noise, and we’ll bounce back next week with a full, trouble free cast.

The Walking Dead hits a home run this week with the very solid episode 307, “When the Dead Come Knocking”. About the only turd in the punch this week was the lunatic in the cabin, and who’s to say the turd didn’t add a touch of savory piquancy that elevated the episode as a whole? I do, actually. That’s who. That part was straight up horseshit.

But just like The Walking Dead wouldn’t be The Walking Dead if there wasn’t something WTF worthy each week, our podcast wouldn’t be our podcast if we had nothing to bitch about. Oh. And Poindexter’s science experiment. That was goofy too. Oh god, I can feel the Waldorf coming over me. Anyway, the good stuff was very good. Getting the Ricktatorship and Woodbury all involved, a fairly touching scene involving Carol, gut wrenching torture involving Glenn and Maggie, hair raising, tension setting music, and excellent pacing sets us up for one epic mid-season finale next week.

This week’s episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead finally introduced us to the long awaited character of the Governor, capably played by distinguished actor Liam Neeson. An interesting choice to let him roll with his Scottish brogue, but you know what? I think it works.

Other points of interest include Michonne’s epic, episode long stink eye, zombie science, the Return of Merle, Andrea making mooney eyes at Liam, Chris Hardwick being force by AMC to be an annoying asshole, and the resurrection of Jim’s Dead Man’s Brew.

Camp Herschel is rocked, and Jim and A.Ron are liking how things are going down on the farm as we enter the home stretch of season 2.5 of The Walking Dead. We discuss Daryl’s Sayid homage, proper zombieland parenting, Dale’s campaign trail, the group’s ammo situation, age appropriate play with your 18 year old daughter, Randall’s trustworthiness, Carl’s embrace of secular humanism, having a go at mud-stuck zombies, and the physics behind ripping a man’s guts open. Not to mention lots and lots and lots of you fine people’s feedback, and another poem by heart broken fan, Tom inWest Virginia.
