Adult Swim is back

A staple at every San Diego Comic Con, Adult Swim is returning once again for this year’s installment of the mega-show. And as fans have become accustomed to, that means a party on the Green of Bayfront Park, with all the trimmings. That’s right behind the convention center by the way, if you’re unfamiliar.

Fans of the network’s various cartoons will find games, rides, prizes and more at what’ll be a free event. This year will also bring “nightly entertainment” that’ll include a DJ Dance Party, running from 9pm to 10pm. Not that that’s all, as fans can also look for a series of themed events.

Thursday, July 24th, will feature an exclusive content screening, with previews and reveals. Then on Friday, fans will be able to catch live table reads, featuring the cast of Rick and Morty. And finally, Saturday will will load up with “Adult Swim Through the Years”. That’s poised to celebrate the big 25 year anniversary, and attendees are encouraged to don their favorite related cosplay. Look for all three events to kick off at 7:15pm, on their respective days.

Here’s the official word on all of them:

• Thursday (7/23): Night of New: Exclusive Content Screening – Adult Swim kicks off Comic-Con weekend with an exclusive outdoor screening event where fans will get a first look at a collection of never-before-seen content, including surprise previews and can’t-miss reveals from across the network.
• Friday (7/24): Live Table Reads – Join the voice casts of Rick and Morty for an exclusive live table read featuring laughs, surprises and a rare behind-the-scenes look at the talent bringing these fan-favorite worlds to life.
• Saturday (7/25): Adult Swim Through the Years – Don your favorite Adult Swim-inspired cosplay and join a one-night-only celebration of 25 years of unforgettable characters, moments and mayhem, featuring a live animated visual set from Afuchs Twin.

The full Adult Swim on the Green event will be open from 1pm through 10pm, Thursday through Saturday. Fans can check it out on Sunday as well, though that’ll be much more limited in terms of time. That being the final day of the Con, look for Adult Swim on the Green to be open from 11am through 4pm.

Leaping home

If you’ve been following along with the Babylon-5 renaissance over the last few months, then you’re probably a pretty happy fan right about now. Not only is the show (eventually) getting a sequel series, but it’s once again found its way into the zeitgeist, and it being talked about regularly on social media. Oh, and it also has a brand new animated movie, which is out right now on home video.

Called Babylon-5: The Road Home, the film stars the voices of many of the original series’ cast. Among those is of course Bruce Boxleitner as Sheridan, who find himself lost in time, and cascading through a series of possible pasts and presents.

Those who remember the show fondly will come across more than a few familiar faces present in the animated movie, as Sheridan tries to find his way home. And if you’re looking for something that holds the flavor of the classic show, you’re not going to do much better, since The Road Home was penned by J. Michael Straczynski himself, B5’s creator.

Return to Babylon 5 as the epic interstellar saga continues with The Road Home. Travel across the galaxy with John Sheridan as he unexpectedly finds himself transported through multiple timelines and alternate realities in a quest to find his way back home. Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm features everyone’s favorite rascals, the Aqua Teens: the brainy Frylock, the mouthy Master Shake, the loveable Meatwad, and everyone’s favorite perverted neighbor, Carl, as they split up then get back together to fight everyone’s favorite corporate overlord, Amazin, led by everyone’s favorite tech mogul, Neil (voiced by everyone’s favorite Peter Serafinowicz) and his trusty scientist sidekick, Elmer (Paul Walter Hauser, who is everyone’s favorite).

Ah that’s some vintage Shake right there. If you’re a fan of the now-classic (I guess) Adult Swim show, it’s kind of hard not to get pumped for this new movie. After all, it’s been a while since we’ve seen the Hunger Force, and they’re looking as insane as ever here.

Set for release on November 11th, Aqua Teen Forever: Plantasm will debut on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray, and in Digital format. It’ll also be up on Movies Anywhere. You can get your pre-orders well in advance though, as those have kicked off already.

The fifth season of The Venture Bros. picks up moments after the stunning climax of season four and hits the ground running for a season of globe-trotting adventures and stay-at-home suspense. But no matter where it runs—from the steamy jungles of Central America, to the sparkling sands of the Greek Islands, to the seedy back alleys of Tangier, to the jagged cliffs of By-Golly Gulch—the Venture family can’t escape the treachery of enemies old, new, and within.

Season five of the show, which harkens back to the grand adventures of the pulp era (with a healthy dose of comedy thrown in), was one of the most popular in its run. Featuring some pretty big time voice talent too, the show firmly ensconced itself in the realm of wider pop culture appeal.

Now that it’s finally on DVD and Blu Ray, Warner Bros and Adult Swim have done it up right with a release that includes not only all of the episodes in the season that saw airing, but also a pair of special installments and some neat bonus features. Both the “A Very Venture Halloween” and “From the Ladle to the Grave: The Shallow Gravy Story.” can be found on the discs as well as deleted scenes and even some director commentary from show creator Jackson Publick and “fellow writer, director and executive producer” Doc Hammer.

The two-disc DVD set and Blu Ray versions of The Venture Bros. Season 5 will be available for pre-order on January 28th for the prices of $24.98 USD and $31.97 USD respectively. Expect it to hit the streets on March 4th.

So how does 10 rooms of Adult Swim sound? If you answered ‘insane’, then you’re on target. The CN has plans to erect a giant (possibly magical) castle right smack dab in the middle of PetCo Park’s parking lot. The castle will be free to enter, all you need do is line up at 4pm to get your complimentary ticket.

The castle officially opens at 5pm for entry and stays open till 10pm each night from Thursday the 18th until Saturday the 20th. Once inside fans will find that there’s more to this exhibit than just a bunch of replicas to gawk at too, as you’ll find multiple paths through to the exit as well room ‘challenges’ that you’ll need to complete. These rooms will have you crawling, dancing and singing (yes, singing) to proceed.

Crazy? Sure, but that’s kind of Adult Swim in a nutshell isn’t it?

Thursday, July 18 

The Heart, She Holler

The creators and stars of Adult Swim’s epic TV event, The Heart, She Holler, will explain it all at this panel. Executive producers John Lee (Xavier: Renegade Angel, Wonder Showzen), and Alyson Levy (Xavier: Renegade Angel, Wonder Showzen) will be joined by cast members Patton Oswalt (United States of Tara, Ratatouille), Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy) and Heather Lawless (The Campaign). The panel will be moderated by Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, 30 Rock).

 

Friday, July 19

The Venture Bros.

Show creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer will discuss the original series, now in its fifth season, and answer fan questions. They will be joined by the voice of Brock Samson, Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, The Tick).

Childrens Hospital

Come watch a sneak peek of Childrens Hospital season 5 and hear from the show’s creative team, led by creator and star Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), executive producer Jonathan Stern (Burning Love, Newsreaders) and executive producer David Wain (The State, Wanderlust). Co-creators/executive producers Seth Green and Matthew Senreich are joined by head writers/co-executive producers Douglas Goldstein and Tom Root, actor/writer Breckin Meyer, writer/director Zeb Wells, and DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, to discuss the Emmy-winning series. Come watch a sneak peek and get your questions answered about the upcoming new season and the next Robot Chicken DC Comics Special. Keith Crofford, vice president of production for Adult Swim, will moderate the panel.

China, IL

Creator and executive producer Brad Neely and executive producer Daniel Weidenfeld discuss the second season of the animated series China, IL, which will air this fall. They will be joined by cast member Hannibal Buress (30 Rock, SNL). The panel will be moderated by Jonah Ray (The Meltdown, The Nerdist).

 

Saturday, July 20

Rick and Morty

Premiering this winter, Rick and Morty is a show about a sociopathic scientist who drags his unintelligent grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. Executive producers Dan Harmon (Community, Channel 101) and Justin Roiland (Channel 101) will preview the new animated series, and will be joined by writer Ryan Ridley and cast members Spencer Grammer (Greek) and voice actress Kari Wahlgren. The panel will be moderated by Rob Schrab (The Mindy Project, SCUD).

Dave Willis (Squidbillies, Aqua TV Show Show) and Ned Hastings (Squidbillies, Aqua TV Show Show) will discuss the return of long-running animated series Aqua TV Show Show and Squidbillies. Christy Karacas (Robotomy) will preview season 4 of Superjail! and JJ Villard (Monsters Vs. Aliens) and Tommy Blacha (Metalocalypse) will discuss the upcoming new series King Star King. Also fans will get an exclusive look at new Adult Swim series Mr. Pickles from creators Will Carsola and Dave Stewart (Funny Or Die Presents Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time).

The Venture’s are getting around quite a bit as of late with an appearance in Poker Night 2 (by Brock Samson) and now a series of neat offerings on Xbox Live. I hadn’t realized it, but seasons 1-4 are actually available on Live and had been for some time; a fact that particularly cool as season five is just around the corner. And even if you’ve seen all that the first four seasons have to offer already, there’s still something for you to watch on Live as the opening episode of the brand new season -What Color is Your Cleansuit?- is free for Live subscribers through June 9th.

As far as goodies go, a whole bunch of iconic show ware is up right now for you to dress your Avatar in including: Hank and Dean’s iconic tops, Molotov’s eye patch, Sergeant Hatred’s helmet, Dr. Killinger’s mask, Baron Underbheit’s jaw, Triana’s top and sweet costumes for Dr. Girlfriend, The Monarch, Phantom Limb and Speedsuit.

Picking up just a few minutes after the climax of season 4, season 5 is going to be a star-studded affair. Expect to hear the vocal stylings of the likes of Aziz Ansari, Paget Brewster, Wyatt Cenac, Kevin Conroy, Bill Hader, John Hodgman, Gillian Jacobs, Kate McKinnon, Tim Meadows, J.K. Simmons, and Brendon Small- all of whom will be taking parts on what’s become one of the biggest shows on Adult Swim.
