In this week's episode, Tim and Marty talk about what they've been reading. Honestly, we are spending a lot of time in our Marvel Unlimited subscriptions, because even with the UI and UX issues, there' still so many books to cover. What - and from what service - are you reading right now? What would you really like to read? Marty has an idea on how to make that happen, so let us know!

We did! Our guests Manu, Caitlin, and Kelsey join Marty and Nick for a discussion of Tony Stark, Rhodey, Daredevil, kissing in comics, and the wrong way to make a bourbon milk punch. This week, in prep for this weekend, we have a treat! Sharon Bruhn, producer Tim's better half, shares her work on the N64 game Superman: The Animated Series. This game is part of our Patreon reward: Wherein Marty gets drunk and streams one of the worst video games ever made. Sharon ended up being the de facto QA lead for this game while she worked at Nintendo. She provides some key insights into the game development cycle as well as why the game was eventually published.

And then join us on Saturday, 7pm CST for the main event: Marty streaming the game while drinking bourbon, beer, and maybe something called arak. It'll be a hoot!

On today's episode of All Comics Considered, we're going to talk about comics for all ages. And the reason we're doing this is that we really do believe in being gate openers into the world of comic books. Grim and dark books simply aren't going to be appropriate for a younger audience and we feel that they should have something to curl up with on the couch.

Marty will be talking about Superman Smashes the Klan written by Gene Luen Yang and art by Gurihiru. In a world that keeps pushing towards a right wing, hateful place, everyone needs to follow Superman's lead here.

Tim picked up David Peterson's Mouse Guard, and it is a lush fantasy novel that features enticing character development, a feast for the eyes, and elements that reminded him of the Black Cauldron series.

Format Changes! Format Changes! Mon, 28 Oct 2019 17:42:37 +0000
Hi there Patrons and ACCtion Heroes!

The audio file says it all, but we have some formatting changes coming down the pike. We're spinning off Pullbox into its own weekly show. This way, we get to focus on our core mission of introducing new comics and comics-related media to our community. We tend to think of it as gate-opening. We are still going to do regular deep dives into other topics. For example, in the coming weeks, we have Immortal Hulk and Horror, Romantic Representation in Comics, and an interview with writer Jon Tsuei. But we're also adding a "lighter" topic into the rotation. Think of those topics as being palate cleansers for the dark and gritty Daredevil/Batman stories that Marty cannot stop bringing up. Examples of those topics include All Ages Media, State of the Arrowverse, and romance in general. Bookclub isn't going anywhere. In fact, this next bookclub will be Bone! And because Nick loves it so, we're going to do two whole shows on it, about a month apart. Look for our next Book Club vote in the coming weeks!

No matter what changes, our purpose remains the same: To open up the comics community so that it is welcoming to all people. Comics are for everyone, and we want to share the joy they bring with everyone. These changes let us double down on our commitment to you. The format changes are taking place this week. Let us know how we're doing either on Patreon or wherever you get your podcasts (ie a 5-star review would be great!)

Episode 161: Batman as a Lifestyle Episode 161: Batman as a Lifestyle Thu, 15 Aug 2019 23:55:45 +0000 This week on ACC, Marty, Tim, and Nick gather around their microphones to discuss "DC as a Lifestyle Brand" and what ATT/Time Warner are doing with DC comics. Folks, it's a bit worrisome

In the second half of the show, we talk about the history of the MCU on Netflix and what the future of the MCU on Disney+ may bring. More specifically, we go into great detail about what did, and did not, work with Netflix.

As you may have guessed, Marty talks about Daredevil. At least this time, its within the context of the Netflix shows.

Hey there ACCtion heroes! Did you think we went on summer break without telling you? I, on behalf of the whole ACC crew, am so sorry we have been off for a few weeks. But we are back with at least two episodes ready to go!

In this week's episode, Tim and his lovely bride came to visit Chicago wherein pizza was tasted, ice cream was compared to Italian ice, coffee was consumed, and adventures were had. We also saw a little movie we like to call Nightmonkey Takes Europe, but what most of the critics are calling Spider-Man: Far From Home.

I think we also talked about Hulk, Green Lantern, and Chip's Daredevil run, but we didn't get all of that on tape.

    • Good - Secret Wars Black Spidey suit, Miles's, and Spider-Gwen's sweet hoodie costume.
    •
    • Good - Adam Warlock's current incarnation, I'm a sucker for a thunderbolt motif.

Bad - Basically every She-Hulk costume, in all reality.  The purple and white number was the best, but even that was jjust a one-piece bathing suit.

Episode 142: Milestone and Shuri Episode 142: Milestone and Shuri Thu, 21 Feb 2019 12:08:55 +0000 Today on All Comics Considered, to kick of Black History Month, Marty and Tim discuss the state of the late great Dwayne McDuffie's Milestone/EarthM and the Shuri Series! Let's turn the page!

    Milestone and EarthM

It's been over 3 years since the Milestone relaunch was first announced and at this point we don't have any idea if it's happening or not.

    Timeline by Lojo

    • January 2015: Reggie Hudlin, Denys Cowan, and Derek Dingle announce the return of Milestone under the name Milestone Media 2.0.
    • July 2015: DC announces partnership with Milestone 2.0, relaunching the Dakotaverse under the name Earth M.
    • 2015-2017: We hear nothing about the relaunch, but an occasional it's still happening.
    • May-June 2017: Michael Davis, an original co-founder of Milestone, writes two articles about how he was left out of the reboot and why he thinks Milestone 2.0 is going to fail.
    • August2017: We learn the reason that the relaunch hasn't happened is a lawsuit between the Dwayne Mcduffie estate and Milestone 2.0. The lawsuit claims Milestone 2.0 hadn't included McDuffie's shares in the new company and that his estate had been excluded from all plans for the relaunch.
    • October 2017: DC and Milestone announce that Earth M will launch in Spring 2018.
    • 2018: Earth M does not launch in Spring. We later hear that it was moved to October and again nothing happens with little information given. The last we heard Bendis wanted to use Static in Young Justice, but was denied permission from Milestone.

    Let's turn the page...

    What is a fuckboi

    • "man whore"/Player + misogynistic ass hole = Fuckboi.

      • Not just a man who has lots of sex

      • A particular combination of douchebaggery and player mindset

      • Example

        • Tony Stark

      • Example: not a fuckboi

        • Oliver Queen

        • Clark Kent

    Fuckbois to Discuss

    • Daredevil

    • Gambit

    • Human Torch

    • Bruce Wayne

    • Jason Todd

    • Lex Luthor

    • Cyclops

      • Does it count if you're constantly cheating on your wife when your "true love" who she is a clone of comes back to life?

      • Also, Emma.

Characters we disagree on "fuckboi" status

Ellis Bojar has an amazing comic origin story. Actually, he has two. He was active in comics way back in the 90s, but after a stint in IT, he was able to start working on smaller projects until his life changed. All of that is covered in the interview -- and I will not spoil this interview.

Ellis is relatively active on twitter and you can buy his book, Red Shift, direct through Comixology. Just keep in mind, when I started this book I couldn't stop until I was done. So put away some time and go read this fantastic book!

    Call to Action

Until next time, I leave you all with a call to action from JA Micheline

"If you want to prevent the next Comicsgate, Brexit or Trump, here are some suggestions: rather than claiming you support marginalised people, rather than stating that you are against the principles of a nebulous enemy, demand better of your peers, demand better of yourself, and demand it in public. Amplify the voices of marginalised people discussing issues within your community. Intercede when a peer is responding in a hostile fashion towards those discussions. Set a standard for public and communal discourse. Do not tolerate the dismissal or disrespect of your marginalised colleagues. Do not tolerate the dismissal or disrespect of marginalised strangers. And in every environment, no matter how uncomfortable: hold the line."

    Hey there lovely ACC-tion heroes!

On this episode of ACC, Today we're going to explode the the myth dismantling the idea that super/cape books are shallow. We find the feels from each age: Starting the Silver Age, travel through the Bronze Age, find some gems in the Pockets/Bandoleer/Dark age, and delve into some modern books.

Hannah brought this topic up due to an issue of Daredevil, wherein we learn (spoiler!) that Sister Maggie left Matt and Jack Murdock due to postpartum depression (part one and two.)

(Editor's note:  We also talked about this in our love letter episode, and I wrote up a blog piece for it.) What cape/super-hero books do you read that destroy this myth? You should totally let us know on Twitter, Facebook, or even email us!

    Feature 1 - Three Questions

We each ask each other three questions.

    Nick to Tim

    1. What insights would an Asian-American bring to the shield if, like Sam Wilson, they took the mantle of Captain America for a while?
    2. If you were a wrestling promoter in the DC Universe, who would you recruit?  No, you can't cross-over Ben Grimm.
    3. We talk a lot about how heroes (and sometimes villains) have helped us understand ourselves.  Has a hero (or villain) ever helped you understand someone ELSE?

    Tim to Nick

    1. Generally speaking, what limits you from reading comics? Not a critique, but a genuine curiosity.
    2. If you were tapped to write for a book, which one would you want to tackle?
    3. Comic book movies obviously pull source material from comics, but increasingly we are seeing movies affect the content of comics. (Example: Drax's redesign), do you think this is a positive trend, negative, or neutral?
