Bergamot has a beautiful woody scent, while key lime is fresh and bright. Together they create a scent that’s bright and deep at the same time.

The smell is AMAZING.

I’ve even been using it as a nighttime facial moisturizer, and I love waking up to skin that is bright and refreshed. 

Our body oil base has been a hit since we formulated it. It is free of both almond oil (which some are allergic to) and coconut oil (which some don’t like) and it doesn’t cause breakouts.

Vanilla Chai Blended Butter!

This one is delicious.

It’s a warm vanilla base, layered with nutmeg, clove bud, black pepper and cinnamon essential oils for a spicy, cozy scent that is perfect for fall.

My 11-year-old daughter was one of the first product testers and she’s given it her own name:

“The eggnog butter.” 

And I totally get it.

It’s warm. It’s creamy. It’s spicy. It’s comforting.

But what has surprised me most about this butter is its scent longevity.

Along with my handy-dandy shea butter, I’ve come across yet another natural product to add to the team: 100% All Natural Mango Butter. Now, I’ve always seen this butter listed as an ingredient in hair care products, but never had I seen it in its natural form until recently.

I’ll be completely honest. When I purchased it, I had no idea of exactly how to use it. I was completely lost and decided to do some research before I turned myself into a chemistry lab. Here’s what I found:

1. Mango butter is extracted from the kernels of the mango

2. Mango butter is an emollient and moisturizer and has a high content of fatty acids (this helps keep your skin moisturized and promotes cell regeneration)

3. It contains vitamins A, C, D, E, and group B vitamins: folic acid, calcium, iron, and magnesium (vitamins A, C, and E are known to be beneficial to hair)

4. It protects the skin from UV rays (this is also a great component for your hair to help decrease chances any possible sun damage)

5. It can hydrate the skin and hair for a long period of time (it can help balance the moisture in your hair for an even longer period of time)

I was completely impressed! I knew that mango butter had to be good for you, but honey, I didn’t know it was working with all that! I swear my mind was on overload thinking of all the ways I could use this for my hair AND skin. I didn’t know if I wanted to mix it, melt it, rub it or pour it…I was all over the place!

Eventually, I decided that I would try it as a pre-poo/hot oil treatment…and in turn, I got my life! The process was really quick and easy. Below are the steps I took to create an amazing treatment:

• I put some of the butter in another container to prepare it for melting. I then boiled some water, removed the pot from the stove and placed the container in the pot. (I removed the pot from the stove to ensure that the oil wouldn’t over heat). The butter melted pretty easily, I just stirred it a little bit and in a matter of minutes it had the consistency of melted coconut oil.
• I then poured the butter into an applicator bottle to make the application process easier and less messy.
• I first applied the butter directly to my scalp and massaged it in. I was really trying to reap the benefits of its moisturizing and cell regeneration attributes! I did this for about 3-5 minutes.
• I then applied the butter down the length of my hair. I made sure to saturate the hair. Oh and I never used a hair tool. I just used my hands to get it all through the strands (and THAT just rhymed, baby I’ve got BARS…any who…)
• I placed a plastic cap over my head and let the butter marinate. I planned on letting it sit for 30 minutes but I got sidetracked watching “Orange Is the New Black”…that show is everything, but I digress…
• After I let it sit, I proceeded to shampoo my hair as I normally do. My hair was VERY manageable in the shower and it didn’t feel as stripped as it usually does. (I prefer sulfate shampoos over non-sulfate by the way)
• Once my hair was clean, it was time for me to deep condition. One thing I will say, my hair did have a shine to it with no product and my curls weren’t frizzy or anything! It looked really moisturized so I was quite pleased. I knew then that the mango butter had done its magic.

To make a long story short, I ended up styling my hair as usual. My hair’s manageability, softness and sheen were ON POINT! I didn’t have to add any more moisture for about 3 days (compared to my normal 2). That’s not a significant amount of time; however it did last longer as the property list suggested.

Here’s my hair after it was all said and done! Oh and this was a twist out…

All in all, I give mango butter the “Yaassss” stamp of approval! If you’ve already tried mango butter for your hair, tell me how you used it and what you thought of it!

To Soften Hair: Oyin Juices and Berries
I have been using this for YEARS and it is my JAM. Fun fact, I buy so much that I got a call from Oyin last year offering me my own permanent discount coupon (laugh cry emoji). Maybe I had hit a purchase limit threshhold or something, I don’t know.

I use this in my hair and on all three of my kids. I find it is the perfect product to apply in conjunction with my butters. Like my butters, it is absorbent and does not build up a lot, so I can apply it daily without feeling like my hair is getting grimy.

How I use:
I spritz it into my hair or my kids hair to add some moisture. I follow up by raking a dollop of whipped butter (any blend) through my hair. It seals in moisture, keeping my hair really soft and shiny. It also is great for reviving curls and second day hair.

Crown area hair breakage can be very distressing, especially when the rest of your hair is flourishing.

It sucks when your hair’s hemline is shaped like a W rather than a healthy U or V because of crown area and middle area breakage issues. Don’t be discouraged! If your crown area breakage is not the result of a medical issue, there is hope for restoring your crown area to its normal fullness and length. The key is to isolate the crown area and pamper it to life. This article will give you 7 quick tips for encouraging hair growth in your crown area again.

1. Investigate. Is your crown area breakage caused by physical trauma?

It is helpful to determine the exact cause of your breakage, especially if it is caused by handling and physical trauma. Often times, mechanical damage is something you are fully aware of— how have you handled your crown air hair in the past? Is your sew-in done too tightly? Have you been rough combing your crown area? Wrapping? Have you been neglecting to fully moisturize the area? Applying too much heat? Did you overlap a relaxer? Have you been rollersetting too tightly? Has repetitive coloring affected your crown? Once you determine a physical cause for your crown area breakage, simply discontinuing the practice will turn your crown around in several weeks.

2. Diagnose. Is it a protein/moisture balancing issue?

Next, you will need to determine if the breakage can be fixed with either protein or moisture deep conditioning. You’ll need to read my article: The Fine Art of Protein and Moisture Balancing for help with determining your required product solution for your crown area breakage. More than likely, restoring the moisture balance will be your focus. Once you know whether your product focus should be protein or moisture, you’ll need to deep condition weekly with heat to restore your crown area. When you condition your hair, make sure that you section the hair in increments so that each and every section of hair, especially the crown, is treated. You’d be surprised the number of people who simply coat the edges, barely scrunch through the middle, and slather the ends with conditioner product. You have to get in there good and make sure the crown area gets some love!

You also want to be sure to moisturize (either protein or moisture-based) the crown area daily. Part through and really isolate the crown. Really focus your daily moisturizing efforts in the middle. Very few people treat the middle sections of hair to moisturizer on a regular basis.

3. Massage to stimulate your crown area.

A quick massage is beneficial to your scalp and will help you restore sluggish blood flow to the crown area. A nightly massage lasting about 10 minutes is all you need. You may choose to add stimulating essential oils to your scalp massage for maximum impact. These lightweight oils are great for getting nutrients to the scalp and they have a calming, relaxing effect as well. Good essential oils to try in your massage are peppermint, lavender, rosemary, and thyme oils. Sweet almond oil and jojoba oil are popular carrier oils to combine with your essential oils since too high a concentration of these oils can actually irritate the scalp.

4. Avoid pulling your nape back into ponytails to help the crown area.

Actually, you’ll want to avoid any styles that place tension on the crown area hair period. Free form styles like braidouts, twistouts, and rollersets* are good for growing back out a crown. Ponytails tend to increase crown area breakage, especially if new growth is present in the crown area or if “phony ponies” are used. Keeping ponytails and buns damp underneath can also weaken the hair and lead to breakage in the middle of the head.

Weaves should be kept to a minimum when you are trying to grow out crown area breakage since the braiding that tends to be done under many weaved styles can also stress the crown area.

*When rollersetting, do take care to carefully place the metal clips in the crown area. Metal clips can get very hot under the dryer and can damage the hair. Avoid clipping rollers together!

5. Avoid direct heat to the crown area as much as possible.

Heat can make breakage problems a lot worse. Everyone knows to stay away from blow dryers and flat irons, but you should also be careful with hooded dryer heat since the crown area can receive a lot of heat attention under the dryer. The crown area is often the very first section to dry. Make sure that your dryer model circulates heat well and that you are able to adjust your heat settings as needed. Check your crown area regularly. If your crown area dries first, spray it again with water to allow your other areas to catch up. Also give your hair adequate time to dry once it is set so that you can air dry your hair to completion. Once your hair is about 80% dry under the dryer, allow the rest to dry naturally.

6. Cover your hair in a satin or silk scarf or bonnet nightly.

Avoid cotton bandannas or sleeping on cotton pillows that can zap precious moisture from your hair.

7. Keep the crown area trimmed and as neat on the ends as possible.

If your hair is layered, you really want to make sure that the ends that are originating from your crown are kept neat. Uneven, splitting or otherwise frazzled hair easily tangles itself and can lead to a cycle of crazy breakage. Hairs should be able to move freely past other hairs without “catching.” This “catching” can lead to breakage in and around the crown area of the head.

I’ve had my share of crown area breakage issues! What I ended up doing was isolating my crown area and trimming it down to a blunt length. It was much shorter than the rest of my hair, but the trim allowed me to focus on the area—to treat it separately and to comb it separately until it improved.

In light of the Grand Jury decision to not indict former police officer Darren Wilson for the murder of unarmed teen Mike Brown, there have been calls across social media and various online outlets to boycott Black Friday and redirect those funds to Black or other minority-owned businesses. The call was met with mixed reactions. Some balked at the idea and were staunchly against it. Others (like me) supported the idea, but also felt the need for a more long-term strategy that would continue to focus on building economic capital (and therefore leverage) within Black communities.

On Thanksgiving day, I had a passionate discussion with my brother in-law about the economic call to action. I shared with him that I believed the ever-growing natural hair community presents a unique opportunity as an enclave in which this economic shift can take place — because it already is. The move to support small, women, Black, and other minority-owned business is already alive and well within the natural hair community. When I first set out to launch the Small Business Spotlight on The Mane Objective, I was really focused on showcasing alternatives to those not-that-much-improved-really relaxer turned natural brands. But as the feature space has evolved, I have grown to realize that these small business brands are more than mere alternatives; they have products and potions that stand uniquely within their own right.

Behind the butters, poo bars, conditioners, pomades, and jellies are teams of women (and some men!) who are more than kitchen mixtresses. Some are chemists by formal training, and others have practiced aromatherapy for years. What they all have in common is the ability to formulate high-quality products with integrity, love, and a deep rooted interest in doing the best for women with natural hair (and men too!). Many women grew up with a natural hair routine which involved applying oil to the scalp. This was often done after washing  or  applied to part lines in cornrows, twists or braids. Other times it was used to cover up flaking. However, given what is now known about hair care, is this oiling really necessary? The answer is Yes and No.

There are two key reasons why oil is not necessary

1. Oil production for hair starts at the scalp

– Sebum is the natural oil that coats hair. Its production begins just under the skin of the scalp and therefore the scalp surface is naturally coated in oil. A gentle massage of the scalp can help to further distribute the sebum but in general the scalp produces sufficient oil and does not necessarily require a ‘top up’

2. Oils, especially natural oils can feed the fungus that causes dandruff

– Dandruff is caused by a fungus known as malassezia globosa. This fungus thrives on a specific oil known as oleic acid which is found richly in natural oils such as olive oil, coconut oil and shea butter. Reducing the use of oil on the scalp may help reduce dandruff.

1. Dry scalp and Eczema

– If you have scalp eczema, it may be recommended to you by your doctor that you apply a barrier cream or oil to the skin. The oil of choice is likely to be mineral oil (otherwise known as white soft paraffin or petroleum jelly/vaseline) as they form a thick layer to keep moisture in and do not contain the oleic acid that feeds dandruff.

2. Dandruff treatment
