Can you admit to swiping up over this lockdown period? We are all guilty of this as social media has become the new online retail platform. Brands work with influencers to promote their products through sponsored social media posts, long-term collaborations and partnerships. Successful influencers can also earn commission through affiliate marketing and some take it a step further by launching their own clothing brands. We love finding genuine influencers that don’t just do it for the gram! Many of us go to Instagram influencers for style advice as they feel more relatable than high end fashion magazines. They give us a glimpse into their lives and give real reviews, this is what makes them the modern-day model for retail and online businesses.

These are the influencers taking over retailers

1. Lorna Luxe

@lornaluxe

Lorna Luxe is an Instagram influencer with over 1.2 Million followers, she regularly posts her favourite fashion items and beauty products. She’s made a lot of us swipe up over lockdown purchasing some of her favourite buys. She also has her own ‘In The Style’ collection, the range is affordable and reflects Lorna’s personal style, featuring floral prints, statement dresses and tailored items. She also has her own website where she posts lifestyle blogs about fashion and travel.

2. Yasmin Devonport

@yasmindevonport_

Yasmin Devonport has the most incredible Autumn winter style, she makes you want to swipe up on every piece! She posts all of her outfits on ‘Like to Know’ a website which tells you where you can buy each item from, that way you never miss out.

3. Tara May

@taramays25

Lifestyle and fashion influencer Tara May has this incredible way of mixing high street brands with designer items, her discount codes make them achievable buys. She is a super glam mom who landed a collection with ‘I Saw It First’, the edit is full of comfy loungewear, classy co-ords and chic accessories. She also has her own clothing brand ‘Milana Studios’ which focuses on hard to come by materials, they aim for every product they produced to surge past the buyer’s expectation.

4. Hattie Bourn

@hattiebourn

Fashion blogger Hattie Bourn creates looks from the high street and recently had her own ‘Nasty gal’ edit. Everyone is swiping up following this young relatable mother of two beautiful boys. Hattie and her sister Mallory also have their own clothing brand ‘Bourn Sisters’ which sells unique matching pyjama collections for adults and children. Bourn also has a YouTube channel where she Vlogs her family life.

5. Sophia and Cinzia

@sophiatuxford & @cinziabayliszullo

Sophia and Cinzia are the duo that make you want to get shares with Zara! They showcase the latest store pieces and show you how to style them for individual looks. They are also huge on YouTube and have great vlogs and clothing hauls.

While online sales rocket could this be the end to high street shopping?

At Benito we know it’s important that we do everything we can to encourage all to look after ourselves both mentally and physically. This year especially has been a tough one with Covid 19 taking its toll on our mental health after months of living in lockdown separated from family, friends and partners to business closures to losing loved ones. As a result this has had a huge impact on everyone which makes it even more important to prioritise our mental health and wellbeing. We should find time to show our support to others as well as looking after ourselves. Many of us do not feel comfortable talking about our feelings but its healthy to say how you feel, try not to block out the low feelings but instead turn them into something more positive.

Be a Better You

How to improve your mental health during the pandemic

  • Stay connected

Don’t isolate yourself from the world reconnect with friends and family regularly, drop them a message or give them a call to keep in touch. Video communications like FaceTime, Zoom and Teams are great for face to face contact. Otherwise you can contact a helpline for emotional support if you don’t feel comfortable talking to family and friends.

  • Limit social media use

Social media is an addiction which can cause detrimental effects from too much exposure, this dependence is harmful to us socially, physically and mentally. It’s important we separate the real world from our digital worlds, we often get in a harsh cycle of self-comparison, jealousy and unsatisfactory expectations. We should instead try using social media as a reward after completing an important task.

It’s Black history month and here at Benito HQ we are here to showcase tried and tested black owned beauty brands that we are loving right now. In the past the beauty industry hasn’t been as inclusive as we may have liked, with brands offering minimal shade options that don’t cater to different skin textures. Finding the right products for skin, hair and body may still be a disappointing experience for black women, however we are starting to see a shift when it comes to brands designing products that are diverse and can be used by anybody no matter their skin type and tone. This initial shift is down to the black owned beauty brand founders who have highlighted the lack of diversity and took it upon themselves to change this. Although the industry still has a long way to go with brands needing to listen and learn how they can improve to accommodate all consumers.

Benito’s Top 5 Black Owned Beauty Brands

Her main aim for the brand was to bring makeup for all skin tones to the forefront working with pigments to make sure they work on all skin tones. The brand has 36 universal colour choices and five shade levels curated for all skin tones, types and undertones. The brand shows inclusivity is by using a wide range of models including all shapes, sizes and genders.

The brand aims to celebrate and embrace natural hair focusing on curly, coiled and textured styles. Their affordable products help maintain, hydrate and nourish natural hair by using safe ingredients. Show your love for black owned beauty brands

It’s time to make ourselves aware of not just beauty brands but what is happening across the globe and how we can help from petitions or taking it upon ourselves to read about cultures and history. This will result in changes for the better, we can learn from the past and influence the present and future. It’s important we continue to support these brands not just this month but always. With our support we can make changes to the beauty industry making it more inclusive. Hopefully more brands will take note, improve their products and develop a wider market like these amazing brands above.

Tag us in black owned brands you are loving from fashion to beauty, we would love to share.

For years shapewear has been given this negative stigma and we associate a ‘Mrs Doubfire’ moment when we think of shapewear. Last week Kim Kardashian West introduced Skims a new line of shapewear to the UK to get rid of that old image and change women’s minds and approach when choosing the right shapewear. The range is now available across all Selfridges stores; London, Manchester, Birmingham and online. This UK launch features over 160 Skims products ranging in price from £8-£150 including their popular body suits, waist trainers and solution shorts. All designed to enhance, lift, smooth and tone there’s an option for everybody!

Gone are days of having friends to help you get in and out of shapewear, no more deep lines across your waist from all of the digging in. Skims truly believes that solution wear is supposed to be comfortable and pain free and that’s why it’s so adaptable to everyday wear rather than just occasion wear. Skims offer “inclusive solution wear” focused to find the right support, coverage and shade for each individual. Their advanced construction techniques give a smoother flatter silhouette and seamless technology that sculpts and lifts.

Benito HQ verdict

We have tried the Skims core control high rise at Benito HQ and have raving reviews, it can be used under dresses, jeans yet you feel like you can breathe underneath even when eating a big meal. I did not feel conscious that anyone can see you have shapewear on as the colour was matched so perfectly.

“I believe that every person should have access to great shapewear, underwear and loungewear,  I want women to feel comfortable and confident in whatever they are wearing” Kim Kardashian West.

Selfridges | Instagram

It wouldn’t be a Kim Kardashian moment if we didn’t have an instagrammable shopping experience. Head to Selfridges Instagram and check out their highlights page to experience their opening. If you can make a trip it would definitely be worth it and beneficial to see what colour you are and then you can make online purchases going forwards. Selfridges also launched a virtual life drawing class on their Instagram page where Kardashian West posed for a series of images wearing items from the collection. Fans were then able to interpret the image however they like and upload it via social media for a chance to be picked to feature on Selfridges Instagram page by Kardashian West herself.

The return to university is likely to be a very different experience for this year’s group of students whether you’re a fresher, returning or post graduate, from online learning to one-way systems. Instead of parties, gatherings and group sessions university life is now a life of isolation and loneliness, you’ll quickly learn how to meet new friends online rather than in person. This new university life could be undertaken from home without the huge expense. Many of us are still trying to figure out the changes to university life this academic year so we have outlined some information you may need to know before the term starts. Please note these changes have been put in place to keep yourself, fellow students, staff and the community safe.

• Working remotely

Staff and students will be required to work remotely with only essential staff on campus. There will be restricted access to some of the facilities and the majority of buildings within the campus will be closed.

• Changes to learning

Many universities are opting for online lectures this Autumn, video communication sites like Microsoft Teams and Zoom are becoming the norm for a lot of students.

• Virtual freshers’ week

This year’s freshers’ week will be virtual events that students will attend without having to leave their bedroom halls.

• One-way systems

Walking around the campus may be different, universities are imposing a one-way pedestrian system to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

• Wearing a mask inside the campus

Like every other public building it is compulsory to wear a face mask inside all university buildings unless you’re exempt from health reasons.

• Social distancing on campus

Social distancing is key when on campus, keeping 2 metres apart from those you do not live with where possible. Some universities have installed Perspex screens to keep social distancing in place.

• Halls segregated by course topic

Some universities are segregating halls by course topics allowing students to stay in their bubbles both at home and whilst learning reducing interaction with people from other bubbles.

• Stricter hygiene measures

Universities have introduced enhanced cleaning measures including more frequent cleaning of rooms and shared areas, also increased availability of handwashing and sanitisation facilities.

• Effective ventilation

Improved ventilation has been introduced to help reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus, opening windows and doors will also increase the supply of fresh air flow.

• Reducing congestion

Student timetables have been modified to stagger arrival and departure times reducing the number of students coming in and out the building at any one time.

Still looking for the ultimate student experience?

Here are Benito’s top tips for the new ways of uni life

• Work out

Stay fit and healthy by signing up to your local gym or simply exercise outdoors

• Online quiz nights

Arrange a fun quiz night over Teams or Zoom with your friends

• Drinking games

Clubs are closed but that doesn’t stop you from drinking with your roommates

• Movie nights

Plan a weekly movie night with your household – don’t forget the snacks!

• Join societies

Discover and get involved with your university societies

• Check in with family

Organise regular FaceTime calls with family and friends

Hopefully this has given you some inspiration on how to utilise your time whilst keeping positive. It’s difficult to say how long these restrictions will last however its possible they could be eased in the second term of university if the situation improves. Be mindful of your mental health during these times, Public Health England have published Guidance on mental health and wellbeing during COVID-19. Charities such as Mind exist to make sure no one has to face a mental health problem alone.

Despite all this, the good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel, students have been told they can go home at Christmas! How many will return if the current situation continues?

Now that wearing a protective face mask has become a part of our daily routine you may have noticed the part of your skin that usually gets covered by the mask can get drier and breakouts may appear. We have some skincare tips that will help your skin get back to its healthier condition.

• Cleanse your skin

Wash your face with a gentle cleanser as oil and sweat can cause breakouts, it’s key to remove any signs before putting your mask on.

CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser with Salicylic Acid, £12 at Boots

This cleanser gently exfoliates the skin with salicylic acid, to smooth dry rough and bumpy skin.

CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser with Salicylic Acid

• Moisturise

As the skin under the mask does not get to breathe it’s important to bring its balance back. Always opt for a gel textured moisturiser as it will hydrate and soothe your skin without being overly sticky and heavy. Stay away from products that have fragrance.

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Gel Cream, £22.50 at ASOS

This calming gel hydrates and soothes sensitive skin without being greasy.

Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Gel Cream

• Exfoliate

Dermaplaning is a great way of exfoliating it removes the layer of dead skin cells that may be clogging your pores. By doing this your skin will receive more oxygen resulting in a smoother complexation, it will also make your cleanser and moisturiser more effective.

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid, £28 at Selfridges

For an at home product effortlessly decongest oily skin with this fast-absorbing formula that works to remove dead cells from both the surface of the skin and from within the pores.

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid,

• Use oil balancing toners

If you have oily skin, we advise using an oil balancing toner this will help keep sebum production at bay. Also stay away from toners that contain alcohol as these will dry out your skin.

Pixi Clarity Tonic, £13.50 at LookFantastic

Described as a clarifying tonic with AHAs, antioxidants, and balancing probiotics, this toner aims to help clear skin and minimise the appearance of pores.

Pixi Clarity Tonic

• Protect your lips by applying petroleum jelly

Chapped dry lips are common face-mask skin problems. You can prevent this by applying Vaseline regularly throughout the day.

Vaseline Lip Therapy, £1.95 at Boots

Vaseline’s Lip Therapy balms ensure lips stay hydrated and smooth, choose from their four scents: Original, Aloe, Cocoa Butter and Rosy Lips.

vaseline-lip-therapy

• Wear the right mask

To reduce breakouts, we advise opting for a cotton mask. Cotton is a natural fabric that feels soft, perfect for if you have sensitive skin as this will not cause any irritation. It’s also a breathable fabric which will fit snug but allow you to breathe comfortably. You should wash cotton masks daily, wear a clean mask each time and remember to wash your face after removing it, this will ensure you don’t get a build-up of bacteria on your skin.

• Avoid wearing makeup under your mask

Makeup worn under a mask is more likely to clog your pores and lead to acne breakouts. Try to keep your makeup to a minimum and avoid wearing it in the parts that will be covered by the mask, try only wearing eye and brow products. If wearing makeup under the mask is necessary, make sure to use oil free products.

Typology salicylic acid serum, £11.80 at Typology

If you do breakout in acne and blemishes after wearing makeup then a targeted spot treatment can speed up the healing process, while reducing irritation and redness. This specifically targets oily, blemished and acne prone skin, only apply to concerned areas.

typology

• Take a 10-minute mask break every 4 hours.

We have found that taking a 10-minute break from the mask can help keep your skin clear as this allows the skin the breathe properly throughout the day. Only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands. An example of a safe place to remove your mask would be outdoors when you are at least six feet away from people and inside a car when you’re either alone or with somebody from your household.
