If you’ve followed Alberta Bike Swap for any length of time, you know that our provincial headquarters—affectionately known as “Swap Central”—is actually our kitchen table.

It’s where we refine software for our proprietary Bicycle Swap Software™, mentor app computer science students, organize CAN-BIKE safety courses, arrange meals for our 200+ volunteers, and coordinate the logistics for our Bike Index, Project 529 registration or bike swap events. It’s compact, highly efficient, and keeps our operational overhead at nearly zero.

However, standing in a room full of Alberta’s top business leaders as a Social Enterprise Finalist at the Calgary Chamber Business Awards Gala made us realize something important: getting up from the kitchen table was one of the best choices we ever made!

The Power of Local Community

Joining the Calgary Chamber of Commerce completely transformed how we connect with our city.

Before joining, we were focused almost entirely on the technical and physical logistics of running massive consignment events and anti-theft drives. But stepping into the Chamber ecosystem opened up an entirely new world. We’ve had more fun, gone on more community adventures, met extraordinarily talented Calgarians, and established strategic alliances (106 and counting!) that directly strengthen our mission.

From software partnerships with tech leaders like Arcurve to venue collaborations for our upcoming 2027 events, the Chamber network showed us the power of local business community support.

Heartfelt Gratitude to Alberta

We want to express our deepest thanks to:

  • The Calgary Chamber of Commerce: For welcoming a zero-overhead, kitchen-table non-profit with open arms and recognizing the value of our social enterprise model.

  • Our Fellow Finalists & Winners: For inspiring us with your dedication, creativity, and drive to make Calgary a world-class city.

  • Calgarians & Albertans: Who trust us every year to verify bike serial numbers, educate young cyclists, keep stolen property off the streets, and protect community assets.

While we didn’t bring home the top trophy, leaving the gala with newfound partnerships, strong friendships, and renewed energy was the ultimate win.

Thank you for cheering us on, Calgary. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have to clear the awards

If you walked were at the Calgary Food Bank main office last week, you might have spotted an unusual scene: lights, cameras, a videographer, and the two of us posing alongside a pristine, vintage 1980s Eddy Merckx road bike.

While it might look like an unlikely spot for a bicycle non-profit photo shoot, it actually tells the story of how Alberta Bike Swap operates behind the scenes.

Why Film at the Food Bank?

This Friday is the Calgary Chamber of Commerce Business Awards Gala, and Alberta Bike Swap is deeply honored, and frankly surprised, to be named a finalist for the Social Enterprise Award.

When the Chamber asked to film a video spotlight on our operations, we had to make a quick tactical decision. Everything we do—from running our proprietary Bicycle Swap Software™ and mentoring app dev to organizing CAN-BIKE safety modules and ordering meals for 200 volunteers  and logistics and debottlenecking — happens right at our kitchen table.

While our kitchen table setup keeps our overhead costs practically non-existent, fitting a full commercial video production crew, lighting rigs, and a classic Belgian-designed racing bike into our kitchen was a stretch.

Highlighting Our Strategic Alliances

Filming at the Food Bank gave us the perfect opportunity to feature one of our 106 strategic alliances across Alberta.

When bicycles are donated to Alberta Bike Swap, they enter a purpose-driven ecosystem. Many are inspected, repaired, and provided to newcomers, youth programs, or local charities for direct transit. But special, rare assets—like this classic 1980s Eddy Merckx—are utilized to generate maximum community impact in ways other than transportation security.

We are proud to announce that this vintage Eddy Merckx is being donated to the upcoming CBC Calgary Food Bank Auction, where 100% of the proceeds will go toward supporting food security for local families.

Wish Us Luck This Friday!

Being recognized as a Calgary Chamber Social Enterprise Finalist is a testament to our volunteers, strategic alliances, and the community that supports our events year after year.

Thank you to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Calgary Food Bank, CBC Calgary, and everyone who keeps our wheels turning. Wish us luck at the Gala this Friday—and get ready to place your bids on a collector item for a fantastic cause!

If you were cycling along the Bow River pathway past RiverWalk Plaza on October 4 or 5, you probably noticed a group of people waving, hollering, and gesturing for you to pull over.

No, it wasn’t a flash mob—it was Alberta Bike Swap, our amazing volunteers, and Calgary Police Service hosting our Bike Index Registration Drive!

And thanks to everyone who pulled over for five minutes, the event was a massive success: we officially registered nearly 300 bicycles over the two-day event!

Throughout the weekend, the conversations along the pathway fell into two distinct categories:

  1. The Procrastinators: “I bought this bike two years ago and kept telling myself I’d register it online…!”

  2. The Newly Informed: “What is Bike Index? You mean there’s a free global database that police use to return stolen bikes?”

We bridged that gap—making registration effortless while educating everyday cyclists on anti-theft protocols—is exactly why we do what we do as Alberta’s Bike Index Ambassadors.

A Massive Thank You

An event of this scale doesn’t happen without serious community teamwork. We want to extend our sincere gratitude to:

  • The Calgary Police Service: For joining us on the ground, engaging directly with citizens, and providing official, tamper-evident CPS frame decals for every registered ride.

  • East Village YYC: For hosting us at RiverWalk Plaza—one of the best, highest-volume pathway locations in the city!

  • Our Phenomenal Volunteers: Who logged serial numbers, inspected frames, guided riders through forms, and kept energy levels sky-high all weekend.

What’s Next?

Because this event was so energetic, informative, and impactful, the answer is simple: Yes, we will definitely be doing this more often!

If you missed us this time, don’t worry—you can still register your bike online anytime at Bike Index, or catch us at our next live registration clinic during Winter Bike Week in mid-February!

Thank you, Calgary, for coming out and helping us help others.

Walking out to an empty lock where your bicycle used to be is frustrating, gut wrenching, and unfortunately all too common. As Alberta’s official Bike Index and Project 529 Ambassadors, we hear about this scenario play out daily.

While panic is a natural reaction, taking methodical, immediate action significantly increases the odds of recovering your ride. Here is what you should do right away:

1. Report the Theft to Law Enforcement

Contact your local police department via their non-emergency phone line or visit a neighborhood police station in person to file a report.

  • Note: Do not dial 911 unless a crime or violent situation is actively occurring.

  • Why it matters: Police officers cannot return recovered property without an official police report number attached to the claim.

  • Your bike is like insured: under your home policy and insurance companies do NOT pay out unless you have a police report.

2. Update Your Bike Ownership Registries

If your bicycle was already logged on Bike Index or Project 529, log into your account immediately and change the bike’s status to STOLEN.

This action triggers community alerts, notifies local bike shops, and flags the serial number for law enforcement officers checking stolen property databases in the field.

3. No Registry? Register It Right Now!

A common misconception is that if your bike wasn’t registered before it was stolen, you’re out of luck. This is false.

If you have your bike’s serial number, open a free account on Bike Index and Project 529 immediately. Create a profile with the serial number, make, model, color, and photos, and mark it as stolen right away.

4. Can’t Find Your Serial Number? Start Digging

If you don’t have your serial number written down, don’t give up just yet:

  • Check Original Receipts: Look through paper or digital purchase receipts from when you bought the bike.

  • Call Your Bike Shop: If you purchased your ride from an independent local bike shop, call them! Specialty cycling retailers frequently log serial numbers in their customer databases during the original point of sale and they also often register YOUR bike on bike registries.

  • (A quick note on big-box stores: while major chain retailers rarely archive individual serial numbers, it is still worth checking digital receipts or customer accounts if available).

The Common Theme is that Bike Ownership Registries Work

Every successful recovery story shares one vital element: a serial number matched to an official ownership database.

If you are reading this and your bicycle is safely parked in your home or garage, take five minutes right now and register your bike on on Bike Index and / or Project 529.

#DYK We have a Peace of Mind Walk through at 2:00 EVERY.SINGLE.BIKE.SWAP so that you can verify for YOURSELF that your stolen bike is NOT in our event(s).

We’ve had this courtesy for 15 years and NO ONE has ever found their stolen bike at one of our events.

With our joint Bike Index Registration Drive with the Calgary Police Service just around the corner on October 4 & 5 at East Village RiverWalk Plaza, our DMs have been buzzing with questions.

To help everyone get their rides protected, here are the answers to the top questions we’ve been receiving—plus a quick call for an extra set of hands!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. “I can’t make it to East Village on October 4 or 5. How can I get an Calgary Police Service Bike Index sticker?”

Don’t worry, you won’t miss out! You have two ways to get your sticker:

  • By Mail: Register your bike online at Bike Index. Once completed, email us a screenshot of your registered bike profile along with your mailing address, and we will mail an Bike Index sticker to you!

  • At Our Next Event: If you prefer in-person registration, mark your calendar for mid-February 2027! We will be hosting our next public registration drive during Winter Bike Week.

2. “I bought a used bike recently, but I’m not sure if it was registered or if the seller was the legal owner. How do I check?”

Navigating secondary market purchases can sometimes leave room for uncertainty and that’s why we started the bike swaps. The easiest solution? Bring the bike down to RiverWalk Plaza on October 4 or 5! The Police and we will audit the serial number to help you determine its status, and guide you through registering it under your name cleanly and legally.

We Need 1–2 More Volunteers!

We didn’t think we’d be putting out another call for help, but looking at our social media metrics, Calgary cyclists are coming out in full force for this event!

To make sure line-ups move quickly and every rider gets logged without delay, we are looking for 1 or 2 additional volunteers to join our team on October 4 & 5.

  • What you’ll do: Help cyclists capture serial numbers, assist with basic online form entry, and apply frame decals.

  • Requirements: Friendly attitude, basic smartphone or tablet comfort, and a love for the local cycling community!

If you have a few hours to spare and want to help keep Calgary’s bikes where they belong, message us today!

Bike theft is one of the biggest barriers to active transportation in urban centers. Every year, thousands of bicycles are stolen across Alberta, and while law enforcement officers recover hundreds of them, the vast majority can never be returned to their owners simply because the serial numbers were never recorded.

As Alberta’s official Bike Index Ambassadors, Alberta Bike Swap is working to change that.

On Sunday, October 4 and Monday, October 5, we are hosting a free, public Bike Index registration clinic at East Village RiverWalk Plaza in direct partnership with the Calgary Police Service.

Event Details & Schedule

We’ve structured this two-day event to serve all types of local cyclists:

  • Sunday, October 4 1230-3: Geared toward weekend recreational riders, families, and trail cruisers taking advantage of the Bow River pathway network.

  • Monday, October 5 430-6: Set up specifically for daily cycle commuters traveling home from the downtown core.

Why You Should Register Your Bicycle

Registering your ride on Bike Index takes less than five minutes, but the long-term benefits are substantial:

  1. Official Proof of Ownership: Storing your bike’s serial number, make, model, component details, and photos in a centralized database creates a clear digital record showing the bicycle belongs to you.

  2. In-the-Field Police Recovery: Calgary Police Service officers use Bike Index right from their patrol units. If an officer checks a bike’s serial number and finds it flagged as stolen, they can immediately seize it and contact you for return.

  3. Disrupts the Stolen Bike Market: Stolen bikes are hard to sell when registered. Bike shops, secondary buyers, and online marketplaces routinely check Bike Index before purchasing pre-owned rides.

  4. Free Tamper-Evident Frame Decals: During the event, our team will apply a specialized, police-approved Bike Index sticker to your frame. These decals serve as a strong visual deterrent to potential thieves.

How to Prepare

All you need to do is bring your bicycle down to RiverWalk Plaza during event hours along with your smartphone! Our team of volunteers and Calgary Police representatives will help you capture your serial number, upload photos, and complete your registration on the spot.

Protect your investment, support local crime prevention, and help us build a safer cycling community. See you on the pathway!

As I read that we’ve lost our 56th grant there is always good news on the horizon.

At Alberta Bike Swap, we spend most of our time focused on the practical stuff: vetting bike serial numbers against databases, putting on Bike Index and Project 529 bike registration events, working on software, writing grants, organizing legitimate CAN-BIKE cycling education, and mentoring that next generation of tech.

So when two major award organizations shine a spotlight on our work at the exact same time, it takes a minute to sink in!

We are thrilled to announce two major honours:

  1. Calgary Chamber of Commerce Social Enterprise Finalist: Alberta Bike Swap has been selected as a finalist for our non-profit social enterprise, which redirects event proceeds back into legitimate cycling education, youth bike giveaways, and transportation security.

  2. ASTech Award Finalist: Our co-founder, Chris Grant, has been named an ASTech Award Finalist in recognition of his work developing the technical inspection framework, software verification systems, and data-driven anti-theft workflows that power our events.

Honouring Alberta’s Innovators & Changemakers

While we are deeply grateful for these nominations, the best part of being a finalist is looking around the room at who we get to share the space with. Alberta is home to some of the most creative, resilient, and high-impact social enterprises and technology leaders in the country.

We want to extend a huge congratulations and good luck to all the other finalists in both the Calgary Chamber and ASTech categories! Your work pushes our province forward, and we are honoured to stand alongside you.

Driven by Community

Awards are wonderful, but our core mission always remains the same: ensuring people have access to safe, legitimate, and secure active transportation. Every single bike checked at our floor and every serial number verified  because of our incredible network of volunteers and strategic partners.

Whether you’ve bought a bike, consigned a ride, or volunteered with us over the years—this recognition belongs to you, too!

Want to get involved, volunteer at an upcoming event, or support our mission? Visit us at albertabikeswap.ca to learn more!

They say you can judge an organization by the company it keeps. If that’s true, being part of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce means we’re in fantastic company.

Running a non-profit that handles massive physical events alongside anti-theft software means we constantly balance two worlds: venue logistics and server code. This week, our Chamber connections delivered major progress on both fronts!

A Forever Home for Calgary Bike Swap?

Finding a physical space capable of hosting hundreds of bikes, technician inspection stations, and thousands of eager Calgarians is no easy feat. Thanks to an introduction from a fellow Chamber member, we were introduced to a local venue owner who shares our vision for community impact. We are hopeful this location will become our permanent, forever home for Calgary Bike Swap starting in 2027!

Taming the AWS Lambda Server Setup

On the digital side, our backend software utilizes AWS Lambda—small, event-driven virtual servers that process data behind the scenes.

Like most modern software environments, keeping dependencies current is critical. Our .NET framework version is due for an upgrade before it reaches end-of-support. For anyone outside the developer world, upgrading a Lambda function isn’t as simple as clicking an “Update Now” button. It requires a methodical process:

  1. Code Audit: Determining if our existing codebase will run smoothly on the newer .NET runtime without breaking.

  2. Recompilation: Rebuilding the source code against the updated framework.

  3. Packaging & Deployment: Repackaging the compiled assets and pushing them back up to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  4. Dependency Check: Ensuring that if one Lambda needs an update, its related microservices are audited and updated as well.

Fortunately, we don’t have to tackle serverless infrastructure alone. The technical team at Arcurve—another outstanding Calgary Chamber member—is stepping up to handle our AWS Lambda migration. Their expertise ensures our platform remains fast, secure, and ready to serve Alberta cyclists for years to come.

Whether securing floor space or recompiling cloud code, having reliable local partners makes all the difference. Thank you to the Calgary Chamber network, our prospective venue partners, and Arcurve for keeping Alberta Bike Swap moving forward!

With changing international trade policies, shifting supply chains, and rising retail prices, finding an affordable, reliable bicycle can feel overly complicated. If you’re looking to get on two wheels without taking on extra financial strain, buying pre-owned from a local market offers a straightforward solution.

Here is a look at why pre-owned local bicycle markets—like Alberta Bike Swap—provide strong value for consumers while insulating buyers from import tariffs.

Zero Import Tariffs on Domestic Used Sales

When you purchase a new bicycle from a retail store, the price tag often reflects overseas manufacturing costs, international shipping rates, and cross-border import tariffs.

In contrast, buying a used bike at an Alberta Bike Swap event is a direct transaction between local residents. Because these bicycles are pre-owned items already residing within Canada, there are no import tariffs or trade duties passed on to Canadian buyers. The purchase price reflects local market value, and your money stays directly within the community rather than paying into international supply chain markups.

Regional Reach, Local Retention

Because of our structured consignment process and safety standards, our events draw attention across Western Canada and beyond. We regularly see cycling enthusiasts drive up from the US to attend our swaps.

However, regardless of where buyers or sellers travel from, the core economic benefit remains the same for Canadian residents: purchasing local pre-owned inventory keeps your money insulated from foreign trade tariffs while supporting other households right here in Alberta.

Beyond the Price Tag: Safety & Theft Prevention

Buying a used bike through anonymous online classify sites can be hit-or-miss. To make secondary market buying as safe and transparent as possible, every bicycle consigned at an Alberta Bike Swap goes through two critical checks before entering the sales floor:

  • Mechanical Safety Tech Checks: Volunteer technicians perform basic safety checks on every bike frame, chain, brake system, and tire to ensure the ride is structurally sound and ready for the road.

  • Serial Number Screening: To keep stolen property out of our events, every single bike serial number is checked against bicycle registries.

Supporting the Community

Choosing to buy or sell pre-owned bikes locally does more than just save you money on retail taxes and tariffs.

Surplus funds generated from our consignment events go directly back into the community. They fund standardized CAN-BIKE cycling safety education, support local youth bike giveaways, and help fund repair costs for donated bicycles provided to local non-profit partners.

Whether you are looking to clear out garage space or pick up a reliable commute option for the season, buying used locally is a practical, cost-effective, and tariff-free choice for Albertans.
