I wish I had saved my first car.

Well, I did! I bought this in 1977 and have owned it for close to 48 years now. It sat in my garage, non operational for 23 years. Finally when we all had some time around 2020 (you know, THAT little pandemic), I decided to get it running. My plan now is get it a little closer to original condition. I made some regrettable changes as a teenage and I need to undue them, like the suspension, instrument cluster, etc. The nice part of this, was that during my repair efforts, I found the original serial number stamped on the frame. The jeep was no longer in the DMV records, but when it was registered in the past, it had been assigned a replacement serial number. Now, the new tag shows it’s original number. There’s plenty more work to do, but I’m happy I can get in, start it up and drive around.

My grandfather purchased this Jeep secondhand in 1960. It was gifted to my father in the late 70’s when my grandfather purchased a new CJ-5. My dad drove it for years until a collision took it off the road. It sat in disrepair for 40 years before we got it back on the road. An 80s-era fiberglass body from the Sears Catalog now houses a Dauntless V6, paired with a T90A and Dual Matic Overdrive. Shout out to John Shea for the fiberglass repair and fabrication work!

My 1953 CJ-3B Willys began its life with the U.S. Forest Service as a search & rescue vehicle. Outfitted with authentic US Forest Service green paint and bearing the USFS insignia, it tackled rugged roads and backcountry trails helping rangers respond to emergencies in terrain where only the toughest rigs dared to go.

After years of demanding service, it was eventually retired to holdover status and left dormant, neglected, and exposed to many years of sun, rain and time. Eventually it was liquidated at a government auction to a private owner who at the time was more focused on other restoration projects. By the time I discovered it, the Jeep was a very rough and neglected yet intact condition. Past the many dents, extensive rust, layers of dried grease, and in shambles mechanically, I saw its potential and was fascinated with its legacy. When he finally decided to sell it, I bought it and took on the daunting task of its total restoration.

Over the next few years, I restored it bumper to bumper, bolt by bolt. The total drivetrain, including axles, brakes, differentials, transmission, transfer case, and Hurricane engine were totally rebuilt. Every part was either replaced, restored, or upgraded with care and precision. Extensive body work and paint restored its appearance to look like new. Every switch, gauge, cable, and all wiring were replaced. It has no chrome fluff or off-road gimmicks, just a clean, authentic, complete and total restoration honoring its roots.

My Jeep is now in showroom condition turning heads, garnering attention, getting favorable comments, and compliments from onlookers, Jeep owners, purists, and off-road enthusiasts alike wherever it goes. It runs exceptionally well in both summer and winter on the road or trail. The real reward isn’t totally in the kudos and compliments; it’s the look on my grandson’s face when he climbs in and is fascinated grabbing the steering wheel and honking the horn again and again. In essence, it’s a time machine and mechanical adventure that I have done my part carrying forward the tradition and legacy of vintage Willys Jeep vehicles.

My grandfather, Glen Beck, was a Marine in the 2nd Marine Division, armored unit, in WWII. During his service, he was the driver of his units commander utilizing a Willys MB. Like many GI’s, my grandfather fell in love with his Jeep and wanted one for himself. He purchased this CJ-3A brand new in 1949. It has been in my family ever since. It was once broken down and rebuilt (my father cannot remember why his father decided to do this, but the speculation was just to do it) in the early 1960’s. My grandfather loved this Jeep and it spend countless hours and mile driving the mountains and hills around Salem, OR, before my grandparents relocated to Libby, MT where the logging roads were it’s playground. It handled tank traps to blocked roads like a champ and bagged many deer and even an elk shot from the passenger seat! The Jeep did was parked after my grandfathers untimely death in 1989. It was brought to my father’s house and when I was 12 years old I learned to drive it around our acreage in Whitefish, MT. It has no brakes so I learned how to gear down and use tire and soft dirt of the shoulders (with an occasional foot drag) for stopping. In 2005, after bringing the Jeep to my home in Missoula, MT, I tore it down to individual parts, leaving only the engine on a stand in one unit. From there it sat in my garage until I moved my family to Lincoln, NE where we reside today. During COVID, I took the opportunity to resume my frame-up restoration which I completed this past Easter. This Jeep has an eternal number of memories for my father, so my goal was to have my father secretly sit in the Jeep when he made his visit for his great-grandson’s baptism. It worked! He didn’t know the engine was installed (last time he’d seen it I had the engine on a stand in my shed) so I reached over, hit the foot starter, and off we went. He was in tears! Not far down the block he said…can I drive? We spent the weekend driving around Lincoln and hearing an immeasurable number of stories about learning to drive in the Jeep (just like I did), the Marine-style parenting of my grandfather, and stories related to the Jeep. My favorite was when the spare tire was ripped off it’s original side-mount on a tree in pursuit of a large whitetail buck! If you count the Jeep (we named the Jeep Glen) then this is a 5 generation picture worth a thousand words. Can’t wait to hand this family heirloom off to my boys someday.

Purchased from Northern California. Pretty beat, cut up, not a straight panel on it. Rusted crusty, under the hood found a service tag from PG&E (pacific gas and electric) last service in 1993 also written under the hood what was done like replaced brakes and repacked bearings. It didn’t have a seat so I used a brick for a little while. Where the passenger seat used to be was a giant hacked out hole with a huge chain drive sprocket off the pto down to another sprocket on the rear dive shaft. There’s so much more to the story I could go on for a while. Earlier this year I took it to Easter Jeep for the flat fender Friday fun run.
