This trip was hosted by Visit Gloucester Virginia, a county covering Main Street in Gloucester Village, Gloucester Point, Hayes, and other destinations.

Virginia is such a large state that chances are pretty good that you, like me, might never have heard of Gloucester, Virginia. And that’s exactly why I decided to take a trip there.

I was attending a travel conference in Richmond, Virginia, and had the opportunity to explore some of the nearby regions for a two or three night “excursion,” if you will. Visit Gloucester was hosting an “Oysters and Old Virginia” two night tour and since small towns are my jam, I thought it would be a great fit.

Turns out it was.

Here’s my guide to the best things to do in Gloucester, Virginia, including historic sites, local shopping, oyster experiences, restaurants, and two very different places to stay.

Now I’m not much of an oyster eater or a historian, but after a weekend in Gloucester, I discovered that I’m interested in both. Whether you’re planning a one day road trip or a weekend getaway, I’ve got you covered

Where is Gloucester, Virginia?

Situated on a peninsula of sorts between the York River and Mobjack Bay, Gloucester County is a coastal area in one of the most eastern parts of state, before you reach the Chesapeake Bay.

It’s a roughly one hour and 10 minutes east of Richmond. From Washington, DC, you can get there in under three hours, making it an easy weekend escape.

Gloucester is also just across the York River from Yorktown, about 45 minutes from Williamsburg, and a little over an hour from the Virginia Beach area. It’s close to many of the places people visit in southeastern Virginia, but with a small town atmosphere away from the crowds.

What to Do in Gloucester

What you can do in Gloucester really depends on the time of year you travel. If flowers and springtime are your thing, you’ll definitely want to visit one of the county’s largest events, the Gloucester Daffodil Festival, held every year in early April.

But throughout the year, you’ll find other events in Gloucester like Gloucester Day, the Gloucester Farmers Market, and the Gloucester Wine Festival.

Even without a special event on the calendar, Gloucester offers plenty to explore through history, food, shopping, and life on the water.

Start with Gloucester’s History on Main Street

I recommend beginning your visit on Main Street, the hub of Gloucester’s historic downtown. A stop at the Gloucester Museum of History will give you a foundation for much of what you’ll see in the surrounding area.

The museum building was constructed in 1770 and once served as both a tavern and an inn. That history makes even more sense when you head outside and explore the nearby Gloucester Historic Court Circle, a walkable collection of buildings that includes the courthouse and former jail and is now also home to Gloucester County Tourism.

It’s a great place to stop for information – and to pick up a Gloucester souvenir!

As you learn more about local history, you’ll also discover some of Gloucester’s best-known residents, most notably T.C. Walker. Born enslaved, he eventually became Gloucester’s first Black lawyer and a champion of civil rights.

Whether you’re interested in T.C. Walker, Pocahontas, or some of Gloucester’s most prominent women, you’ll discover much of the county’s history through the murals scattered along Main Street.

Browse Main Street and Bring Home Something Local

While you’re on Main Street, it would be a shame not to take advantage of the ample shopping opportunities!

Some of my favorite places for browsing included York & Main, a little-bit-of-everything shop featuring vintage clothing, art, and home goods, and Ware Neck Produce, a true market for local goods right in the middle of town.

While it’s not an actual shop, it’s worth walking down Main Street to see the Center for Archaeology, Preservation and Education (CAPE). It occupies a beautifully restored Texaco station with plenty of art displayed around the grounds.

As you venture further out in the county, you’ll find pockets of shopping but you’ll want to make a special stop at Whitley’s Peanuts

You can certainly shop online for all their peanut related products (do not sleep on the Milk Chocolate Peanut Clusters – OMG!). But stopping by their Gloucester Outlet Store is part of the experience. The loyal and friendly staff will hook you up while also educating you about all things peanuts!

Get Out on the Water – or Simply Watch the Sunset

Gloucester is a water town with a long history of strategic waterways used for defense. More recently, it has become a destination for fishermen and oyster farmers.

The county is surrounded primarily by Mobjack Bay and the York River, although you’ll want to travel farther south in Virginia if you’re looking for wide, sandy beaches.

In Gloucester, you can kayak at places such as Beaverdam Park or launch your own boat from landings throughout the county. There’s even a small beach along the York River at Gloucester Point Beach Park.

But my favorite water activity was simply watching the sunset over the wetlands.

Go Behind the Scenes of Gloucester’s Oyster Industry

During my stay in Gloucester, I got a behind-the-scenes look at the area’s oyster farming industry.

Gloucester Point is home to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, or VIMS, part of William & Mary. Researchers there are doing incredible work to help ensure that oysters can be farmed sustainably year-round.

After our visit to VIMS, we took a firsthand tour with Matheson Oyster Co. in nearby Hayes. This woman-owned company took us out on the water to see its entire oyster farming operation and even let us sample some of the freshest oysters imaginable.

While these were special experiences arranged for our group, visitors can stop by the VIMS Visitors Center, which is currently under renovation, and participate in educational or public programs.

You can also take a drive out to Browns Bay Road, which dead-ends at Matheson Oyster Farm – hopefully open to the public in the future – and enjoy the scenery filled with oyster farms and fiddler crabs.

Where to Eat in Gloucester, Virginia

If you love oysters, Gloucester is the place to be. There’s a booming oyster farming industry but even if oysters aren’t your thing, you’ll still find plenty of variety at the places I visited in Gloucester.

Sweet Tooth Café and Bakery was our first stop in town, and it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite among locals.

The moment you enter the historic building, you’re greeted with plenty of reasons to save room for dessert, including the Lemon Blueberry Bread Pudding.

I regret to inform you that I did not save room.

I was too busy eating the Mac-Daddy, a signature sandwich featuring beef brisket seasoned and slow-cooked for 12 hours, house barbecue sauce, truffle mac and cheese, crispy onion straws, smoked Gouda pimento cheese, all piled onto a house-made warm pretzel bun.

How could I say no?

I’m glad I didn’t.

But I did save room for dinner at Bangkok Noi Thai restaurant. This might not be the type of cuisine you expect to find in small-town Virginia, but the restaurant had all my favorites, including Pad See Ew, fried tofu, and a lovely bottle of sake – for sharing, of course.

Between lunch and dinner, after exhausting my shopping budget, I popped into Gloucester Brewing Company for a tasting flight of locally brewed beers. Believe me when I tell you there is a beer (or custom flavored hard seltzer) for everyone.

And that was just on Main Street.

We also ventured out for my favorite breakfast – donuts! At Dough Haus, I carried on the tradition of getting my two standbys: lemon-filled and glazed. Neither disappointed – in fact the lemon-filled was one of my favorites!

But if you really want some down home cooking, go where the locals go. At Scoot’s BBQ, they could not have been more generous giving us samples of the brisket, smoked turkey, fried chicken, and my non-meat favorites – cornbread and macaroni & cheese.

Where to Stay: Rustic Cabins or Historic Luxury

After all the eating and drinking in town, you’ll be ready to get cozy and watch the sunset.

Where you stay depends entirely on the type of traveler you are. And for this trip, I got to experience two completely different ends of the lodging spectrum.

Camp Cardinal RV Resort: Family-Friendly Glamping

If you’re a casual traveler, a camper, or someone who likes to stay at a family friendly property immersed in nature, you’ll want to check out Camp Cardinal RV Resort, a former Jellystone park.

Now under new ownership, the property has RV hookups, waterside tent sites, or cabins for those who prefer glamping (like me!).

Although the cabin accommodations are rustic, I had all the creature comforts I needed: a bed, air conditioning, and indoor plumbing!

But the real reason to stay – besides the pool, playground, game room, Bark Park, fishing pier, ice cream shop, boat rentals, and more – is the beautiful view of the wetlands, especially after a storm.

Inn at Warner Hall: Historic Elegance.

If camping – or even glamping – isn’t your thing, head to the historic Inn at Warner Hall.

The property dates back to 1642, while the current inn, rebuilt after several fires, offers an elegant colonial atmosphere. With connections to George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and even Queen Elizabeth II, you’ll feel history oozing from every finely decorated room and suite.

When you’re not relaxing in your well-appointed room, you can walk the grounds, head out to the pier and perhaps take a paddle, visit the historic cemetery, or relax in the newly opened Tavern 1642.

For something more formal, make reservations for a fine-dining experience at Austin’s.

So, Is Gloucester, Virginia Worth Visiting?

Yes! Especially if you enjoy small towns, waterfront scenery, local history, independent businesses, and destinations that haven’t been overrun by tourists.

Gloucester isn’t the kind of place where you race from one major attraction to another. It’s better experienced slowly: walking Main Street, talking with local business owners, learning how oysters are grown, and ending the day with a sunset over the wetlands.

On a day trip, you could explore Main Street, visit Gloucester Point, and enjoy a memorable meal. A full weekend gives you time to get out on the water, venture farther into the county, and experience one of Gloucester’s distinctive places to stay.

Gloucester may not have the name recognition of Williamsburg or Virginia Beach, but that’s exactly what makes it worth discovering.

Is God Is is a new film from playwright Aleshea Harris, making her feature directorial debut. And it shows, in all the ways one might expect and a few ways one might not.

The easy comparison would be to call her a young, Black, female Quentin Tarantino. Would that appeal to you or make you run the other way?

Honestly, I would probably run the other way with a description like that. Not because Tarantino isn’t talented, but because he can be a little insufferable. The good news is that Aleshea Harris, the writer and director of Is God Is, is not Quentin Tarantino. She’s better.

Let’s start with what I liked about the movie and why it worked. It comes down to the same things that make any good movie good: strong writing, compelling characters, and a good story. In a perfect world, you get all three. I need at least two out of three for a movie to be watchable.

Harris nails all three with her film debut.

The Story in Is God Is

We’re introduced to twin sisters Racine and Anaia, who share the physical and psychological bond of twins. But they also share the unfortunate bond of childhood trauma.

As young girls, they were caught in a fire set by their father, a tragedy that seemingly took their mother from them. Years later, they learn their mother is still alive and has spent that time suffering in pain. Her dying wish is for her twin daughters to exact revenge on their father for what he did to their family.

Hence the tagline: “Make your daddy dead. Real dead.”

The rest of the movie becomes a mission of vengeance, with two daughters sent by their mother — their God, their creator — to carry out her final wish. Along the way, you’ll encounter violence, dark humor, and more moral questions than you might expect.

The Characters in Is God Is

You could classify the film as a hero’s journey, but the trick is figuring out who the hero is exactly.

Racine, played by Kara Young, and Anaia, played by Mallori Johnson, have an unforgettable bond but very different approaches to life and to “the mission.” Although they are now young adults, we see flashes of them as little girls in the presence of their mother, as thieves in the presence of extended family, and as something much harder when faced with the people standing between them and their goal.

Their characters are a ball of tangled emotions: sensitive and emotional one minute, tough and uncompromising the next. As the story develops, so does their relationship with each other. At its heart, this is their movie, and the ending feels fitting for them both.

The Writing in Is God Is

As a 2023 Pulitzer Prize finalist for her play On Sugarland, Aleshea Harris is clearly a skilled writer. But does a stage play translate well to a screenplay? And can you bring a theatrical production to the big screen while still keeping the audience’s attention?

During the 1 hour 39 minute runtime, I can’t say that I looked away from the screen once. The pacing, dialogue, acting, forward motion of the story, and bursts of action kept me engaged the entire time. The runtime felt just right.

Not bad for a film debut.

What I Loved and What I Didn’t

Beyond the writing, characters, and story, the number one reason for a film buff to see Is God Is is the style. This is where the movie starts to feel Tarantino-esque, but in a way that feels fresh rather than derivative.

The twins are so in sync that they can often communicate without speaking. The use of onscreen text to show their mental banter feels innovative and lets us inside the minds of the sisters without slowing down the story.

The cast is also top notch, including veteran actors like Vivica A. Fox, Erika Alexander, Janelle Monáe, and a startling turn by Sterling K. Brown.

There were a few places where the transitions felt awkward or abrupt. And a few characters created tangents in the story that were never fully realized. These minor complaints could be the result of something that didn’t quite translate from stage to screen. More likely, they are simply editing or writing glitches.

But the story works because of Aleshea Harris’s talent and the strength of the entire ensemble.

Is God Is is edgy, funny, stylish, and violent. And while I don’t usually love blood, the violence feels right for this film. If you’re a movie buff, treat yourself to something new and put Aleshea Harris on your radar.

Adventure

If you’re the type that likes to get your adrenaline pumping (either a little or a lot), there are some great activities on the water, in the water, and even above the water at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach!

1. Ease Into the Water with Circle Boats

Circle boats were new to me and they probably will be to you, even if you’re a regular on Alabama’s beaches. Beachside Circle Boats is the only place where you can experience this fun and low-stakes adventure.

Think of it as a stand-up paddleboard that’s round. And you can sit and steer with a small electric motor. Great for families as it suits young and old alike. They also have add-ons to accommodate things like your cooler and even the family dog!

2. Get Your Adrenaline Going on a Jet Ski

Flora-Bama Marina & Watersports offers jet ski and boat rentals. I was looking for an individual sport and after a quick lesson, set off on a Yamaha while cruising Perdido Key. The jet skis are large, stable and definitely beginner friendly.

This is a great activity for the adventurous adults in your group (minimum rental age is 19) but you can bring passengers as young as five on a 1, 2, 3 or 4 hour rental.

3. See Orange Beach from Above While Parasailing

Once on the list of things I’ll never try, I can now say that I not only conquered that fear but loved it! Thanks to the group at Parasail Sky Surfer, it was easy to hop on a boat, get suited up, and launch into the air with the greatest of ease.

Believe it or not, this can be a family activity. Flyers can be as young as four and you also need a minimum of two passengers. But less adventurous vacationers can pay to be an observer safely on board the boat.

4. Take in the Coastline on a Helicopter Tour

This is one activity that I didn’t try but I’d definitely be open to it, especially after flying high on a parasail. Lost Bays Helicopters offers multiple tours in the area ranging from coastline tours to Civil War fly-bys to sea life sightseeing.

This is a family-friendly activity but call for specifics on dates, times, and ages for your tour.

5. Kayak Through Gulf State Park

On my first trip to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, I had the pleasure of kayaking in the back bays where I got to see bottlenose dolphins and an abundance of both fish and fowl. With that experience, I can tell you that it’s worth doing again and again, especially if you love nature. You never know what you’re going to see and it’s a different show every time!

The Back Bay Blueway offers multiple trails and over 22 launch points in the area. So you can bring your own kayak or rent one from one of the many local outfitters.

Food + Drink

If you’re on vacation, of course you’re going to be eating and drinking. That’s half the fun of a vacation, right? But sometimes, a meal can be an experience and here are three in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach that I recommend!

6. The Flora-Bama Yacht Club Experience

The first time I visited Alabama, I was treated to a night at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club. And I was ready for… a yacht club. Now, I don’t frequent yacht clubs but I imagined a little cardigan and pearls were a necessity.

If you’ve ever been to this establishment, you’re probably laughing right now. This restaurant/bar/outdoor space/concert venue/shop is definitely an experience. Go for the food and drinks but stay for the people watching!

My recommendation is the Crab & Parmesan Hushpuppies and the Blackened Grouper Tacos (locally caught). But if you just want to forget your troubles, definitely have a signature Bushwacker which is a frozen concoction that tastes like coffee, chocolate, rum, and heaven.

7. Coastal Speakeasy

I feel like a true speakeasy should be found via word of mouth. So pretend that I’m whispering this to you.

Psst… head down to The Wharf, a local shopping and nightlife district, and look for a surprisingly vacant jewelry store. Head to a secret door in the back, wave your hand, and then enter the “vault” with a code only found online.

8. Donut Showdown

After a little adult fun, it’s time to get the family together for a little donut showdown! While there are many popular donut shops at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, we pitted two favorites in a head to head showdown: City Donut and Daisy’s Donuts. Both offer amazing, fresh donuts and drinks to go.

But which one is better? That’s entirely up to you! Grab a dozen at each place and let your group decide the winner (although there are no real losers when it comes to donuts).

Hidden Gems + Unexpected Finds

Let’s say you need a break from crowds or you’re still looking for something just a bit different on your Gulf Shores and Orange Beach trip. Hidden Gems just might be my middle name! Here are a few things I recommend you try.

9. Bike or Walk the Backcountry Trail

On my most recent trip, we rented ebikes from Beach Bike Rentals to tour nearby Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. It’s a lovely, paved walking or biking trail. But I say, why walk when you can ride?

With two hours, we barely scratched the surface of the scenery on the backcountry trail. Over 28 miles provide access to wetlands, grasslands, forests, and lakes. But the real draw for me was the wildlife.

With nature, you never know what you’re going to get and we got way more than we bargained for! On our ride, we spotted tortoises, herons, alligators, and even a bobcat (all from a safe distance, of course). I can’t wait to go back!

10. Cruise the Coast in a Slingshot Rental

Want the feel of a motorcycle while keeping more wheels on the ground? Rent a Polaris slingshot from Gulf Coast Rental Co. This 3-wheeled, 2-seater vehicle only requires a regular driver’s license (and personal insurance). Then you can cruise up and down the Gulf Coast in style (and even bring younger passengers with you!).

While I didn’t get to try this in Alabama, I have driven one and it’s exhilarating. It’s also available in both an automatic and a manual!

11. Create a Custom Scent at High Cotton Bath Co.

Maybe this one is just for the ladies in the group but I think everyone loves a good scent. And how unique is it to be able to create your own signature scent? At High Cotton Bath Co. at The Wharf, you can stop in for a “scent party” where you create your own scent for one bath and body product or for an entire product set.

Traveling with a large group? You can schedule a private party and even bring your own wine and champagne to make it an adult experience.

12. Ride the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf

While you’re at The Wharf, you might as well make it a traditional beach experience! You can ride the 140 foot-tall Ferris Wheel in a gondola-style car. Even better, it’s perfect for everyone in your party – kids of all ages (ages 1 and under ride free) and it’s also wheelchair accessible.

What I Noticed

Let me start by saying that Besque recommends that you use this at night, which is what I did. Although it is a lightweight oil, it does take some time for it to fully absorb into your skin. It’s a perfect addition to your nighttime routine as it’s best to do your heavier hydration while sleeping.

As for absorption, DIVINE9 Facial Serum absorbed rather quickly into the drier parts of my face (cheeks) and tended to sit more superficially in areas that are typically in my T-zone (around the nose and forehead).

By morning, most of the oil has been absorbed and my skin felt soft and glowing. Typically, I’d give my face a splash of cold water or a full wash and use my regular daytime routine.

I’ll admit that I was surprised by how well my skin responded to the oil! Here are the quick results I noticed:

• Immediate absorption into drier parts of the face (I went a little heavier on my cheeks and neck)
• Further absorption occurred overnight
• Skin was always softer in the morning with a healthy glow
• Easy to apply, very mild nutty scent

The biggest surprise for me was that it didn’t feel like slathering cooking oil on my face. A few drops with gentle massage were enough to give you a morning glow makes you look a little more alive, especially when you’re not wearing much makeup (me!).

Product review: Besque Shower Oil

Here, Besque takes a totally different approach. The Besque Shower Oil is an all-in-one step that both cleanses and soothes the skin.

It seems counterintuitive to use in the shower (hello – oil and water don’t mix!) but most soaps will strip your skin of natural oils and dry you out. And if you’re lazy like me, you don’t always use lotion after the shower to recoup some of that moisture loss.

I’ve been before… but this time, I tried a completely different kind of trip and it changed everything.

You may recall (or probably not) that I visited Alabama’s beaches (which includes Orange Beach and Gulf Shores) several years ago with a planned itinerary called the “Beach Momcation.” At the time, I was the mom of a 10 year old and needed a little me time. That included a little adventure, a little spa time, and some relaxation.

It’s nine years later and I’m now an empty nester and travel looks different for me. And that means a different itinerary for Alabama’s beaches. I’m ready for the second half of my life where I can dive into adventure a little more and reward myself with luxury at the end of the day.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through a realistic 4-day Alabama beach itinerary, what’s actually worth your time, and how to plan a trip that balances adventure with total relaxation.

Who This Trip Is For

You’ll find all types on the beaches of Alabama and that’s what I love. It’s families with young children, families with teens, older couples, girls trips, and empty nesters like me.

I was paired up with my good friend Andrea to experience this itinerary with (adventure is more fun with friends). While she’s not an empty nester yet, she is the mom of two high school boys and can use some “me time” as well.

Where To Stay

On my last trip, we settled into a beautiful condo at Caribe Resort at Orange Beach. While I loved the condo and the location (situated on the back bays at Alabama Point), we were across a busy road from the beach.

Our Alabama Beach Itinerary

Our itinerary was a little different since we were hosted as part of Visit Alabama’s Beaches Great American Beach Trip. Their proposal was to come up with a list of activities and have fans on social media vote for the best itinerary.

I’m including that here for you because so many of these choices would have been great! Some also seemed a little terrifying for me. And for that reason, I LOVED THEM.

It’s easy to reach an age where wine tasting and spa treatments are your idea of a good time (and trust me, I love those things too). But part of staying young is challenging yourself to try new things. That’s exactly what we did!

Here’s our itinerary for a 4 day trip to Alabama’s beaches.

Day 1 for Alabama’s Beaches

Getting There + Settling Into Beach Life

Because I live in Maryland, driving to Alabama was not a feasible option. The easiest way was a nonstop flight on American Airlines from Reagan National (DCA) direct to Pensacola.

Our first stop was checking in to Turquoise Place. Make sure you know if you’re in C Tower or D Tower as they have separate entrances but the security guards will direct you to the right area and provide your “magic band” that gives you access to everything on property.

A Low-Key First Night (And Why It Matters)

We knew we were planning to hit the ground running in the morning so after settling in, we decided to have a chill dinner.

We had reservations but due to flight delays, we ended up finding a beachside table at Foodcraft, a casual restaurant in Gulf State Park at the Hilton. Parking is limited but they offer free valet parking (just get your ticket validated at the hostess stand).

Since we knew we’d be eating out for our meals, we stopped by the local Publix and grabbed just a few snacks and drinks for the condo.

We ended the night with a soak in the hot tub on the balcony. This is what the snacks and drinks were for!

Day 2 for Alabama’s Beaches

Start Easy: Circle Boats on Cotton Bayou

After a quick breakfast at the resort (included with our stay), we headed to Beachside Circle Boats for our first activity.

Circle boats are the perfect way to ease into your water activities. Think of a standup paddleboard, but round. With a seat on it. And a little electric motor.

It’s a great way to travel Cotton Bayou, a no wake zone where you can frequently see waterfowl and, if you’re lucky, dolphins (we weren’t so lucky).

They are easy to ride, easy to control, and perfect for ages 5 to 85!

First-Time Friendly Jet Skiing at Flora-Bama Marina

I had never been on a jet ski, nor did I want to get on a jet ski. But these Yamaha two seaters at the Flora-Bama Marina were so stable and comfortable that my fears were quickly alleviated. We were given a map of the best areas to ride, a few quick lessons, some “in case of emergency” pointers (which thankfully we didn’t need), and we were off!

These jet skis float with no effort so I could have just taken a relaxing ride if I wanted. But once I got the hang of it, I pushed it all the way to 55 kph (relax, it’s only 34.2 mph). It was so exhilarating that we stayed out for almost an hour!

Lunch With a View at Flora-Bama Yacht Club

Since it was walkable (and an icon of the Alabama beaches), we decided to walk over to the Flora-Bama Yacht Club. While that may sound like a luxurious experience, this is not your ordinary yacht club. This is a beachside haunt with character, and lots of it. But don’t be fooled by the bikinis and picnic tables.

We sat in the restaurant drinking a Bushwacker (think chocolate coffee milkshake with rum and a cherry) and dined on some of the finest (and freshest) fish tacos I’ve ever had.

Exploring the Backcountry Trail by eBike

After lunch, we stopped by the condo to change from wet to dry gear for our ebike adventure and headed to Beach Bike Rentals further down the island.

Beach Bike Rentals set us up with two Trek Electra Townie Go! bikes. Easy and comfortable for riding (and they set us up with a basket for our gear!).

Then we headed to the nearby Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, which offers over 28 miles of paved, ADA-accessible trails. If you’re a nature lover, it’s a great place to observe tortoises, butterflies, birds, and even bobcats and alligators!

Casual Dinner + Live Music at Woodside

While there are lots of amazing restaurants in the area, we opted for a low key dinner in Gulf State Park at Woodside. You order at the counter and find a seat inside, on the screen porch, or outside, where you can listen to live music.

Day 3 for Alabama’s Beaches

Slow Start at The Southern Grind

The Southern Grind breakfast spot is a staple in the area offering a variety of coffee and tea drinks, as well as breakfast sandwiches and freshly baked quiche. Come for the food and stay for the shopping. It’s got great coastal merchandise for sale!

Facing My Fear: Parasailing Over the Gulf

I was so incredibly nervous for this activity. More than any other. And once we met the crew at Parasail Sky Surfer, hopped on board the boat, and got our safety briefing, I had this calm come over me. It was a voice that said, you’re doing this.

So I relaxed into it and found myself 400 feet over the Gulf looking down at the water and back at the shore. Even being a bit nervous about heights, I was perfectly fine as all the water mutes any point of reference (until you look down at the tiny boat!).

After 8-10 minutes, we were back on the boat feeling ready for any other adventures that would come our way!

Beachfront Lunch at CoastAL

Adventure works up an appetite and CoastAL was a great place to satisfy that. Touted as one of the largest restaurants (able to serve 1600 people), we found a quiet outdoor table for lunch where I, once again, enjoyed the local blackened grouper.

This time, however, we skipped the Bushwacker and opted to split an amazing Key Lime Cheesecake!

Walking Along the Beach

After lunch, we were ready for some downtime. Since Turquoise Place is a beachfront resort, we got changed and headed out for our first walk on the beautiful, white sandy beaches. There’s direct access from the resort via a wooden pier and beach umbrellas for resort guests.

Shopping + Downtime at The Wharf

After we got our toes sandy, we headed to a shopping and nightlife district called The Wharf. It’s full of unique boutiques and shops and… a ferris wheel! We kept our feet on the ground and ended up getting pedicures together instead.

Italian at the Beach? Surprisingly Yes.

I had no idea what to expect from an Italian restaurant at the beach but Villaggio Grille came highly recommended. So we went big with a truffle mushroom pizza (half off at Happy Hour) as an appetizer and both indulged with a filet mignon and gnocchi for our dinner.

Finding the Hidden Speakeasy at The Wharf

With it being our last night at the beach, we wanted to find 8 Reale, the local speakeasy at The Wharf. It’s actually hidden behind a jewelry store and you’ll need a code (found daily on their Facebook page) to enter.

The drinks and service at 8 Reale were top notch and the ambience, along with the piano player, is what I needed for a perfect speakeasy experience!

Ending the Day the Best Way Possible

Listen – it’s your last night. Your legs may be sunburned still from bike riding but just get in the hot tub and enjoy it. And don’t worry about having to pack a wet bathing suit. It will probably be dry by the morning!

Day 4 for Alabama’s Beaches

One Last Morning at the Beach

Although we weren’t ready to say goodbye, our flight plans required an early morning departure from Turquoise Place. Check out is super easy. Simply gather your used towels by the front door, run the dishwasher, and throw your trash down the chute. Then it’s off to breakfast!

A Sweet Send-Off Before Heading Home

Donuts aren’t usually a regular breakfast staple for me (although I love them) but beach donuts are definitely a thing.

We couldn’t decide between two local favorites: City Donut and Daisy’s Donuts, so we tried both! I loved both but definitely had a favorite. For this one, though, I’ll let you decide on your own.

Planning Your Trip to Alabama’s Beaches

You don’t need an official Alabama beach itinerary but it does help to have an idea of what you want to do and when you want to go.

Getting to Alabama is surprisingly easy (by plane or by car) and if you don’t have the time for a full beach week, a four day itinerary like this is perfect.

How to Get There (And Why Pensacola Is Easiest)

Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is actually the closest major airport to the Gulf Shores area but you will need to rent a car. It took us less than an hour and was a super easy drive. Also, you can’t miss the Floribama line!

You can also fly into Gulf Shores International Airport (JKA). Allegiant Air is one of the newest carriers to offer nonstop service from smaller cities like Kansas City, Knoxville, and Cincinnati.

Best Time to Visit Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

The only slow seasons for Alabama’s beaches are probably December and January when the high temperatures are only in the 60s. By March, tourist season is in full swing and by the summer, you better have reservations for everything!

Personally, I love the slower seasons but whatever you decide, make your reservations in advance so you won’t be disappointed.

Why You Should Go

The people that know about Alabama’s beaches absolutely love Alabama’s beaches. But almost everyone in my personal circle said the same thing… “Alabama has beaches?”

Yes, they do. That’s why I still consider them a hidden gem! It’s accessible, beautiful, and something different than your regular old Florida vacation. And there’s more to do than just sit on the beach.

This was my second time visiting the beaches of Alabama and I’m already looking forward to the next trip!

There is so much unexpected quirkiness in Kansas but none got me more excited than the prospect of visiting The Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas. Let me set the stage.

I was spending a week or so in Wichita for a travel conference and was invited to spend an additional few days exploring North Central Kansas. We had a rough and PACKED agenda but the #1 attraction that appealed to me was a museum celebrating all things Oz in the little town of Wamego.

Why was I so excited? I’m from Generation X where one of our annual highlights was waiting for the Wizard of Oz to be featured as the Sunday Night Movie of the Week. Even as an adult, is there anything more magical than the moment that Dorothy steps from her fallen house into the land of Oz and into a world of brilliant color?

Clearly, I’m a fan. Now let me explain why I totally think the Oz Museum is worth a stop.

What Is the Oz Museum in Wamego, Kansas?

The Oz Museum is more than just a tribute to 1939 movie that we all know and love. It’s a love letter to the world of L. Frank Baum, an American author of children’s fantasy books. (Did you know there are fourteen Oz books in all?)

Inside, you’ll find a little history, a lot of movie memorabilia, and fun Oz artifacts you never knew existed!

And just in case you didn’t catch the connection, Dorothy hails from Kansas. We’re never given a specific town so why not Wamego?

Best of all, Wamego is right off of I-70 so if Kansas is a travel thoroughfare and not necessarily a destination, it’s an easy stop for an hour or two (or three!).

First Impressions of Wamego and the Oz Museum

When I tell you that the trip I was on was breakneck, believe me. We rolled into town and parked right in front of the impossible-to-miss Oz Museum building. If you were on the fence about visiting, the exterior alone just might convince you.

My only other exposure to downtown Wamego was right outside the museum where we spied a few painted Toto statues (scattered all throughout the town) and an actual yellow brick road, just across the street.

This is a town that embraces its identity!

Inside the museum, I expected a fun little walkthrough. Instead it’s a bigger-on-the-inside kind of experience that’s very well-themed.

What You’ll See Inside the Oz Museum

You’ll enter through the gift shop. DON’T get distracted. There will be time for that at the end!

Wizard of Oz Memorabilia and Collectibles

I expected plenty of movie memorabilia and I was not disappointed. Here were some of my favorites:

• Dorothy’s ruby slippers – not the actual slippers (those are in the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, DC) but a recreation designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the making of the movie
• The death certificate for the Wicked Witch of the East – signed by original Munchkin Coroner (along with his hat!)
• The miniature twister model – used during the tornado scene (yes, it was a miniature!)

More Than Just the 1939 Film

Most of us think of The Wizard of Oz as the iconic Judy Garland movie but there’s more to experience at The Oz Museum than the movie!

You can see a little of the history of The Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum, including some of the original books and even a yellow brick from Baum’s military grade school. It’s cool to see the pieces that eventually shaped the world of Oz.

You’ll also see movie memorabilia for films in the same universe. Stories like The Wiz but also lesser known films like Return to Oz and even The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz.

The Most Fun or Unexpected Parts

If you like collectibles, you’ll get a glimpse at a collection of toys and related items to Oz. As someone who still has a personal collection of McDonald’s Wizard of Oz dolls on my desk, I was delighted by the museum’s collection of Oz toys and collectibles, even if mine may not quite meet museum standards.

I also loved the interactive photo opps where you could take a seat with the munchkins, peer behind the curtain to see the Great and Powerful Wizard, or hop aboard the Wizard’s hot air balloon before takeoff.

Also, did you know that the actor who played the Wizard (character actor Frank Morgan) also played Professor Marvel, a guard at the Emerald City, a soldier, and more!

Is the Oz Museum Worth Visiting?

You already know my answer. YES! Then again, I’m a huge Wizard of Oz fan. You’ll appreciate the museum most if you’re already familiar with The Wizard of Oz, but even casual fans will find plenty to enjoy.

• Wizard of Oz fans (like me!)
• Families with kids
• Road trippers
• Nostalgic adults (also me!)
• Lovers of quirky Americana and small-town travel (definitely me!)

This is definitely not an all day stop but it is a great morning or afternoon stop for families and those nostalgic adults.

If you have children that aren’t as familiar with the story, they’ll still enjoy some of the wax figure-type displays of some of the movie elements as well as the participatory photo opportunities.

For a small town museum, it’s so much more than I was expecting!

It’s a good stop off if you’re on a road trip. But it’s also a great stop to include as part of a larger Quirky Kansas itinerary (there’s a lot of fun stuff in Kansas!).

How Long Does It Take to Visit the Oz Museum?

On our scheduled itinerary, they allowed us 30 minutes to run through the museum. We pretty quickly said NO WAY, JOSE. We need more time here! We rushed and spent an hour so if you want to do it justice, I’d allow a minimum of two hours.

You’ll also want to spend 30 minutes just in the gift shop! And of course, allow some extra to walk around town and see the Toto statues and to walk to Yellow Brick Road just across the street.

Moviegoers for Project Hail Mary will likely fall into one of two camps: purists who have read this rollercoaster of a science fiction tale hoping it won’t be demolished by Hollywood, and those who’ve never read the book and may even, likely, be going in blind. Both will not be disappointed.

Let me start with the camp that I fall into. I’m a pretty huge fan of Andy Weir and have read his biggest works to date: The Martian (loved the book, didn’t love the movie), Artemis (didn’t love the book), Project Hail Mary (loved the book and found the audiobook, narrated by Ray Porter, to be a masterclass in voice acting). It’s also worth checking out Weir’s short story, The Egg.

What I love about Andy Weir’s stories is that they are cerebral enough for the science nerds, just plausible enough for the scientists, and completely entertaining for everyone else. He’s a smart storyteller, creating high stakes and extremely likable characters.

So the natural fear, of course, is that that all gets Hollywoodized during the moviemaking process and we get a shiny, CGI-heavy blockbuster that’s missing all the nuance of the story. And my fears were furthered when, last year, I found out that Ryan Gosling would take the lead as Dr. Ryland Grace. Could a mainstream Hollywood actor do this story justice?

Turns out my fears were completely unfounded.

Although I read the book almost five years ago, the movie sequences jogged enough of it back into my mind to assure you that the story stays pretty close to the book. I didn’t pick up on any major departures. And if there were any, they certainly worked.

Coming in at 2 hours 36 minutes, the movie had to make some edits and concessions to the story. The timeline is condensed but never feels rushed. The characters still have depth. The stakes are still high. The consequences are still understood. And more importantly, the relationship between Rocky and (Ryland) Grace is still the star of the show.

For those of you new to the story, Dr. Ryland Grace is a middle school science teacher with a PhD and a penchant for bucking the system. He’s voluntold that he needs to help save the earth from astrophage, a single celled organism that feeds on sunlight and threatens the future of the Earth.

He becomes part of a one way mission to find a solution in a solar system many years away from Earth. After waking from a travel coma, he’s tasked with remembering his mission and figuring out how to solve it on his own.

But it turns out he’s not alone.

He encounters an extraterrestrial being unlike any you might have imagined. Think of a rock spider, with no discernible face, who navigates with echolocation, and “speaks” with vibrations and sounds.

Coming in cold, you might think it’s nearly impossible to establish a relationship between the two, much less humanize it. But that’s the heart of the story and where the movie magic happens.

It’s an interspecies buddy pic unlike any you’ve ever seen. It’s intelligently told, warmly acted, beautifully shot, and satisfying until the very end. It’s everything you would want in a Hollywood movie. In fact, it’s surprising how well it delivered.

And in case I understated it, this movie would not be this movie without Ryan Gosling. By nature of the story, he carries the entire movie and he doesn’t disappoint. It’s fair to say that I laughed, I cried, and I will be seeing it again.

Don’t let the space spiders fool you. This movie will put a smile on your face and maybe even give you a little more hope for humanity.

Eating vegetarian in Tokyo isn’t as easy as you might imagine. I always think of Asian food as full of stir-fried vegetables and lots of tofu and rice. But many times, that’s simply the Americanized version of Asian food.

The same thing happened to me when I visited China many years ago. I naively figured that my week in Asia would be full of lots of veggies and rice when, by the end of the week, I was pleading to just have some pizza. It’s a great story to read.

For my first trip to Japan, I assumed it would be similar. Lots of fish and rice and ramen and vegetables – that last bit being the most important since my son (and traveling companion) is vegetarian.

On that trip and subsequent trips, I’ve learned that Japanese food is very meat heavy and definitely not always “healthy vegetable stir fry.” That can make it a bit difficult to plan your trip to Japan if you’re vegetarian or vegan.

Luckily, I wrote up my best advice for how to find the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo (and on the outskirts) and now I want to share some of the gems I’ve personally found.

Pro tip

If you obsessively read Google reviews for the best places to eat, do not be alarmed by low ratings in Japan. Native reviewers are famously stingy with stars so a lower rating doesn’t necessarily mean a bad experience. Just make sure you read the reviews and don’t just rely on stars!

Breakfast

You haven’t lived until you’ve tried Japanese pancakes. They’re thick and fluffy and just delicious. But if you need a little protein, I’ve got an egg experience for you too!

Coffee-kan – Asakusa
Near: Asakusa

This is a run of the mill diner but I found the best pancakes here! With lots of coffee options, you can enjoy a full breakfast but I recommend the thick pancakes at least one morning!

EggOn Shin-Ōkubo store
Near: Shin-Okubo/Shinjuku

EggOn is a tiny little egg sandwich shop but if you can snag a seat, you’ll love the light and flaky egg sandwiches.

Original Pancake House Shinjuku
Near: Shinjuku

Located near the top of Lumine Est, the Original Pancake House is easy to find from the Shinjuku train station. But it’s popular so be prepared for a wait! We went to try their fluffy pancakes but much preferred the Dutch Baby. Worth the wait!

Lunch/Dinner

Pizzeria TAKATA BOKUSYA
Near: Waseda University

There’s nothing wrong with eating pizza in Japan! This was one of the first restaurants I chose simply because of its proximity to Waseda University. I recommend heading there for a “lunch set” which gives you salad, pizza, and a drink for around $8. Go early as the line gets long at lunchtime!

Cafe VG
Near: Waseda University

This is a little mom and pop (and dog) cafe near campus. Stop by for coffee or tea or enjoy a home cooked meal. It feels like you’re a guest in their house!

PIZZERIA Kiraku
Near: Asakusa

After a long day of walking and not knowing what to eat, I figured pizza was a safe bet. This is a tiny little restaurant run by a husband and wife with great pizza and beer options. Very welcoming as well!

Ippudo Lumine Est Shinjuku
Near: Shinjuku

There are many Ippudo restaurants throughout Tokyo (and even in NYC) but I can’t confirm that all of them have vegetarian/vegan options. This one DOES. Don’t be fooled by the idea of eating in a “mall.” The top two floors of Lumine Est have some great restaurants!

Vegan Bistro Jangara
Near: Harajuku

We loved this restaurant so much that we ate there three times! Blink and you’ll miss it so be sure to look for the elevator that takes you up to the second floor. There, you’ll wait for one of the small tables but enjoy the ramen and other dishes and get a fancy drink, like a shrub!

Jikasei MENSHO
Near: Shibuya

You’ll often hear people talk about eating in the basement food court of a building. That’s exactly what this is. It wasn’t easy to find but the line to order told us it was worth the wait. Excellent vegetarian ramen. Order at a kiosk and then sit and wait for your meal.

Fujifuku
Near: Asakusa

On our first full night in Tokyo, we had no idea what we were doing or where to go. I found this little vegan restaurant near our hotel and couldn’t have had a better experience. There are only about two tables with additional bar seating. It’s a fixed menu in this one person restaurant. But the hospitality was amazing and the canine company only added to the experience!

Ain Soph. Journey Shinjuku
Near: Shinjuku

Looking for something a little special or upscale? Make a reservation for dinner at Ain Soph. Journey in Shinjuku. There are other locations throughout the city and each one is a bit different. The entire menu is vegan but you’d never know it. A fantastic meal!

Alchemy
Near: Roppongi Hills

We found this place due to its proximity to TeamLab Borderless. A few floors up in the nearby Roppongi Hills district, this upscale vegan cafe had delicious food and a serene setting.

T’s Tantan Ikebukuro
Near: Ikebukuro

If you like noodles like I like noodles, T’s Tantan is the place for you. Whether you want ramen or other noodle dishes, you can find one of these locations throughout the city. We loved this location in the Ikebekuro train station (lots of good eating in a train station!)

Shogun Burger Shinjuku
Near: Shinjuku

Shogun Burger is a great stop if you have non-vegetarians in your party. You can enjoy a veggie burger while others can try the wagyu beef. You’ll find locations throughout the city but this one sits in the heart of Shinjuku.

Kanyam Indian & Thai Restaurant
Near: Ikebukuro

This wasn’t my favorite meal but it’s representative of a good standby for vegetarians. We found this restaurant open late after an evening at Sunshine City. With options for both Indian and Thai, you’ll find a nice dinner set for a reasonable price. Indian restaurants are fairly common throughout the city.

NINGEN RESTAURANT
Near: Shinjuku

Looking for a true izakaya experience? You’ll appreciate this little dive on the 4th floor in the heart of Shinjuku. Don’t be alarmed by the colorful stairway decorations. The staff is very welcoming and offers a small vegan menu.

Kakekomi Gyoza
Near: Shinjuku

If you’re hovering near Godzilla in the heart of Shinjuku, head to this izakaya for a sit down meal of dumplings. It’s deceptively small on the outside with room downstairs and up. It can get a little loud after hours!

Zen
Near: Shinjuku

If you want to try another classic Japanese dish, you definitely want to try okonomiyaki, a type of cabbage pancake. Traditionally make with egg and fish sauce and topped with bacon, you have to hunt to find vegan and vegetarian options. One restaurant claimed to serve a vegetarian okonomiyaki but then added meat sauce on top! Zen offered great beer and great food in an izakaya-like atmosphere.

Coffee/Dessert

Taiyaki Sawada – Asakusa Shop
Near: Asakusa

Taiyaki is a must-try when you head to Japan. And we tried enough shops to know what’s best. This shop offered chocolate, cheese, custard, and red bean filled taiyaki. My preference is cheese. You can find them throughout the city but this is the one you want to try!

BAKE CHEESE TART Ikebukuro Store
Near: Ikebukuro

I read about this little place in one of my Japan guidebooks and they did not steer me wrong. These tarts are like little cheesecakes wrapped in pastry. The Ikebukuro shop is located in the train station but you can find other locations in the city.

Tully’s Coffee
Near: Everything

You can drink Starbucks but when in Tokyo… Tully’s is a local chain that you’ll find all over the city and is a great place to stop for a drink and a snack. Make sure you follow custom and get your table first!

Starbucks Reserve
Near: Ginza

If you do end up at Starbucks (there’s a great one in Shibuya where you can watch the famous crossing), try a local drink like the Hojicha latte. But if you make only one Starbucks stop, make it the Starbucks Reserve in Ginza. It’s a busy location but worth the attraction!

Just Outside of Tokyo

If you happen to venture outside of the big city, vegetarian options are a little slimmer. If you happen to be visiting Nikko or Kamakura, I found some great places for you to try!

Taj Nikko
Near: Nikko

Nikko is an amazing day trip from Tokyo (although worthwhile to stay longer if possible). It’s home to many significant temples and is a designated national park. You’ll find this delicious Indian restaurant on the second floor on the outskirts of town.

Luna Burger
Near: Kamakura

Kamakura is a famous seaside town and full of amazing temples and a giant Buddha. I got completely raked over the coals by people for going all the way to Kamakura and eating a burger. But who cares… they’ve never been to Luna Burger which is a vegan restaurant serving the most delicious fries and amazing “burgers.” Don’t knock it until you try it!

Matcha Crepe (寿清庵 鎌倉 小町通り)
Near: Kamakura

Sometimes, the internet steers you right. We saw a viral video about matcha crepes at a little place in the shopping district of Kamakura. While this amazing matcha crepe gave me a stomachache, it was the best stomachache ever!

As you can probably tell, I’m a little obsessed with Google Maps. I use it on every trip to flag where I want to go and where I’ve been.

I’ve created this map for you to use on your next trip so you’re not scrambling for vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo when you’re at your hungriest!

Since many of the restaurants I’ve mentioned are local chains, I’ve included not only the location I’ve visited, but other locations throughout the city. That way, if you don’t necessarily want to plan ahead, you can always look for something near your location when hunger strikes.

There’s nothing better than reviewing a movie as a regular moviegoer, which is exactly what I did for a recent AMC Screen Unseen showing of How to Make a Killing.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a big fan of AMC’s Screen Unseen program, where you show up on a random Monday night for a surprise screening of an unreleased movie. If you’re the type who likes to guess ahead of time, there are usually spoiler-ish prediction threads floating around online.

But for this one, I went in completely blind, ready to be surprised.

I expected a smaller film with a modest marketing budget (hence the surprise screening), so I was immediately caught off guard when Glen Powell, an up-and-coming leading man, showed up. What we got was one of the latest A24 films, How to Make a Killing, starring Powell, Margaret Qualley, Ed Harris, Topher Grace, and a supporting cast of lesser-known but equally talented actors.

The synopsis:

Disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, blue-collar Becket Redfellow (Glen Powell) will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way.

The film opens with Becket sitting on death row, reluctantly but confidently confessing his sins to a priest. We know up front he’s a convicted killer, so we’re ready for his story.

What we’re not prepared for is a riches-to-rags setup that somehow makes him both likable and relatable.

Becket is the son of an heiress whose out-of-wedlock pregnancy gets her disowned by the family. She and Becket are cut off and pushed into a harder life… until Becket realizes there may be a loophole. He just might be entitled to the fortune he’s been denied if he happens to be the last surviving Redfellow family member.

And as you might imagine, that’s where the killing begins.

On the plus side, Powell does a great job making Becket sympathetic (but not pathetic), while still letting him be charming and oddly easy to root for. He comes across as a hard-working guy who just wants a fair shot, not a money-grubbing, power-hungry heir. Life keeps kicking him while he’s down, and after his mother dies, echoing her belief that he deserves better, he decides to create the life he thinks he’s owed.

On the other hand, Becket makes some questionable choices that end up working in his favor a little too neatly. His life starts to turn around. He finds a promising career and a loving girlfriend. By this point, you start thinking, Okay… shouldn’t this be enough?

And yet, he continues to pursue the inheritance, even when the personal stakes feel less clear. That’s the one place where the character’s motivation starts to wobble. I wanted one more beat – something that made it obvious he wasn’t just chasing money, but chasing validation, revenge, belonging, or some deeper compulsion he couldn’t shake.

Still, the story holds up better than you might expect. The writing is snappy, the acting is delightful, and the film strikes a fun balance: it takes itself seriously, but not too seriously. It kept my attention all the way to the end.

Most complaints about the film seem to fall into two categories. First, comparisons to the original: the 1949 classic Kind Hearts and Coronets. Maybe How to Make a Killing pales next to it but I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen the original (or even heard of it), which means this version feels fresh enough to stand on its own. If anything, it makes me curious to go back and watch the source inspiration.

The second complaint is more along the lines of, “Oh, come on, there’s no way he could get away with that.” And normally, I’d agree. But this is a stylized caper, and it’s asking you to suspend a certain amount of disbelief. Becket is just cunning (and charming) enough that the movie lets him glide past evidence and consequences in a way that’s more entertaining than realistic.

As a surprise screening at a discounted rate, it was absolutely worth the price of admission. But even if you’re planning to spend your hard-earned money on it when it releases, you probably won’t be disappointed, as long as you’re willing to go along for the ride.
