I sang this song recently and, as it was written in 1967, had the feeling that it might relate to a drafted soldier in Vietnam. It gave me a new appreciation for the song.

Hi Tony, I’ve been reading your site for years and think it’s brilliant. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about Bob and his work. I’m a long time Dylan fan and regard Angelina as a masterpiece. When I first heard it back in 91, I could not stop listening to it. It still stops me dead in my tracks.

I share your feeling – or rather, that vague sense of familiarity. The arrangements do vary from gig to gig, but the common thread running through the performances from spring 2025 – that is, from the moment Anton Fig took his place behind the drum kit – right up to today seems to be: the blues. We hear half-familiar licks in every variation, but they’re too subtle to make us exclaim “Aha!”.

I suspect you’re being haunted by that driving, lovely lick we’ve been hearing over the last few months, as in Dothan, Alabama (23 April 2026), which seems to have already faded a week later (Tyler, Texas) only to be fully restored two months on (New Braunfels, TX – lovely version).

But I don’t hear a template – though I do sense (once again) a vague Van Morrison vibe. Beautiful, that’s for sure. Perhaps someone who’s delved deeper into Van’s catalogue than I have might be able to pinpoint it. And should you have your eureka moment: do let me know!

Jochen, great article. I’m curious to know your thoughts on the new Multitudes arrangement, 2025 onward. To me it sounds like Bob might’ve grafted the song onto some other piece of music (as he did with Watchtower and Van Morrison’s I Forgot that Love Existed) but for the life of me, I cannot place its origin. Would love to know your theories. Thanks!

I enjoyed this article’s explanation and interpretation, but the link attributed to Jimi Hendrix is incorrect. That’s neither his guitar, nor his voice, nor his style.

Hendrix’ version is far more coherent and dynamic. It is scheduled for official release in 2026 on the album “Magic Boy”. Don’t forget what Jimi accomplished with All Along the Watchtower, and how Dylan admired it. I highly recommend you give Jimi’s correct and actual version of Drifters Escape a listen.
