The Heart of the Masnavi

An interactive talk by Alan Williams

Alan says: Book Three of Rumi’s Masnavi, which will be published in late 2006, is generally regarded as his most profound. It can be regarded as its heart, where Rumi does not mince his words. In this talk I shall discuss the perplexities and challenges of what some say is ‘beyond the reader’s comprehension’ (this is not my view). Book Three is what some might call, in Gurdjieff’s terms, the ‘mi-fa’ interval of the whole work, namely the crux of difficulties. This crux is our human fear of bodily mortality, and its underlying causes. Rumi is not obsessed with death, but he puts it into a greater perspective as part of the cycle of existence and non-existence.

Alan Williams is Emeritus Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Religion at The University of Manchester. He is the author of books, articles and essays on Middle and Classical Persian religious texts. Among the Persian texts he has published are two volumes of Rumi’s Masnavi (2020) in an ongoing series of six for IB Tauris, London. Alan is a Fellow and Trustee of the British Institute of Persian Studies, a Trustee of the E.J.W. Gibb Memorial Trust, which publishes Nicholson’s Masnavi, and he is also a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.  He lives in Buxton, Derbyshire and has three adult children and four grandchildren. His experience of Beshara predates Swyre Farm, Gloucestershire in the 1970s. He has given many talks to Beshara around the country, several times at Chisholme, and most recently at the October Gallery in 2023.

Course Description

The Kernel of the Kernel [/] is an invitation to an intimate journey of practical development to one’s essence. The book is invaluable, pointing out the way of progress for those along the path. Study is by means of reading and discussion. There is no ‘teaching’ as we all are on our own path of discovery.

Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi (1165-1240AD) is one of the world’s great spiritual teachers. His wisdom has much to offer us in the modern world, in terms of understanding what it means to be human.

This course provides a full introduction to the principles of Beshara in terms of both knowledge and practice. Taking the metaphysics of Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi as a starting point, the course explores what it means to know oneself and the world in the light of the Unity of Existence.

Workshop Details

We live in a world of massive and rapid change, rich in possibilities but criss-crossed with conflicting viewpoints. Many contemporary figures speak of a “crisis in sensemaking”, of being spiritually and culturally uprooted, of having no fixed bearings.  How then can we live lives and engage in projects that have lasting value and purpose? This is not a new question. In the West it has been with us,  in one form or another, for well over a century, though given the crises – or metacrisis – we  now face, the question has an urgency deeper than before.

One response – the approach taken here – is to look for guidance, and fresh spiritual foundations, in some of the world’s great wisdom traditions.  In looking for foundations there are four recurring questions that can anchor us: who am I, where have I come from, why am I here, and where am I going.  It is around these questions that mystical experience and metaphysical thinking in all traditions have primarily  revolved.

The course will proceed on the basis of sound scholarship and solid spiritual understanding, and participants will be encouraged to draw deeply on their own  insights and experience.  Each session will focus on a specific thinker and include a period of meditation together with shared reflection.  There will be three modules with  four sessions in each, and  two groups, Group A and Group B, meeting alternate Saturdays and covering the same material in each: Group A on Saturdays 10.00-12.00 UK time, and Group B on Saturdays 5.00-7.00 UK time – these times should allow participation for individuals  from different time zones.

The basic outline for the course is:

Module One

• Zhuangzi (fl 4th century BCE). Together with Laozi one of the founding figures of Daoist philosophy.  Speaks of the endless change and transformation of the Dao. “Everywhere Being is dancing.” Robert Bringhurst
• Meister Eckhart (1260-1328). Dominican priest and teacher, successor to Thomas Aquinas as Master of Theology at the University of Paris. A contemplative metaphysician, known as the man from whom God hid nothing.
• Ibn Arabi (1165-1240) Islamic teacher and mystic, known as al-sheikh al-akbar (the greatest spiritual guide). A visionary seer and traveller in the imaginal realm.
• Abhinavagupta (950-1016) Leading proponent of Trika Shaivism ( Kashmir Shaivism). Sees reality as an infinite and eternal vibration of divine energy.

Module Two

• Zhu Xi (1130-1200). Leading Neo-Confucian philosopher, synthesising  Confucian thought with Daoist and Buddhist  reflection. The central  Chinese philosopher for over seven hundred years. Contemplative practice and deep knowledge of tradition allowed for recovery of the Confucian Dao.
• Dogen (1200-1253)  Japanese  Zen master and founder of the Soto Zen tradition. His major work the Shobogenzo (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye) presents a rich and complex philosophy.  He emphasises the practice of zazen meditation as itself the moment of enlightenment.
• Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) Visionary Hindu mystic, moving from political activism to deep contemplative practice.  Originator of Integral Yoga. His major work The Life Divine sets consciousness within a frame of planetary spiritual evolution
• Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) Jesuit priest, scientist and mystic. Passionate lover  of the material universe, seeing the Christ as universally present in matter. Sees planetary consciousness, and the capacity for love, evolving in a process of noogenesis.

Module Three

• Rumi (1207-1273) and Hafiz (1325-1390). The apex of Sufi mystical love poetry, both authors celebrating the intensity and universal presence of divine love.
• Basho (1644-1694)  and Ryokan (1758-1831) Japanese Zen poets, at once immediate, simple and profound in their enlightened awareness
• Kabir (fl 15th century)  Indian poet and mystic again celebrating the centrality of divine love, whilst being critical of established religious traditions and practices – iconoclastic in a way similar to Zhuangzi.
• Edwin Muir (1887-1959) Poet and teacher, together with Hugh MacDiarmid and Sorley Maclean  one of the trio of leading Scottish poets of the twentieth century. Centrally concerned with the loss and recovery of Eden.

The course will be facilitated by Jim Griffin.

Jim Griffin. After some years training as a priest with the Jesuits Jim went on to pursue an academic career, teaching world religions and Chinese philosophy at universities in the Uk and abroad.  This was followed by training and work as a psychotherapist. Jim has had a lifelong engagement with different spiritual and wisdom traditions, which he approaches and explores as a contemplative.  He has taught meditation in different contexts for many years. His guiding philosophy in teaching is taken from Confucius: “There is no greater pleasure in life than to share what you have learnt with your friends.” Jim was previously a facilitator on the Trust course “Truth is One but the Wise Speak of it Differently” and more recently ran for us the online course “Interweavings: Christian and Sufi Threads in a Divine Tapestry.”

This talk will take us through Dante’s twenty-one categories of ‘sin’, each representing a different way we break divine Unity and destroy Community, in the process also ruining our individual soul. The Inferno is well known for its vivid variety of ‘punishments’, which we can regard as external representations of the interior states of an ego-centred soul. Among other questions, we will ask:

When is love not enough?
What do you do when you meet your own anger?
Why do thieves have their identity stolen?
What is it like when Hell freezes over?

Robert-Louis Abrahamson, Emeritus Professor of the University of Maryland’s European Division, has given previous talks with the Beshara Trust on Edwin Muir, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Fables and Dante’s Vision of Diversity in Unity. Contemplative study of the spiritual poems of one of the greatest Ottoman Sufi masters, Mehmed Muhyīddīn Üftade (1490-1580). Üftade was born and lived in the town of Bursa, a hugely important spiritual centre at the height of the Ottoman Empire. He was founder of one of its main dervish orders, the Jelvetiyye, through the training of his famous disciple, ‘Aziz Mahmūd Hüdäyi.

This is a second meeting to study Üftade’s poems. There is no need to have attended the previous meeting in March.

Üftade composed a collection of poems, which express his spiritual quest in simple, direct and wonderfully human language.

Oh lover! Oh sincere one!
If it is tidings you desire
Look upon the One who is in the city of existence
Pay no attention to other.

Until you see wonders within yourself
You must find the real goal
In a deep sea you must dive
There, where you cannot see the shore.

You must be one with the One
You must be existent with Existence
You must not stay with others
Nor find any sign of them.

From every shore comes the call:
“Oh you who search for Me, I am God”
Turn your gaze to the side of His Beauty.
There is no other journey for you.

Oh Üftäde! He whom you seek for yourself
Gives Himself constantly, from beginning to end
All remains united to Him
That is the tidings that come from Reality.

Intimate Dialogues with Reality

A seminar on the writings of al-Niffari

Little is known of the life of the 10th century mystic Muhammad Ibn ‘Abdi-‘l Jabbar al-Niffari. He was born in the marshlands of the Euphrates and remained a solitary wanderer all his life, shunning the company of others. His visionary insights, which he wrote down on scraps of paper, were only collected into book form after his death. In his “Spiritual Addresses” and “Stayings” can be found essential intuitions about the spiritual quest, expressed in extraordinarily direct yet subtle language. Compared with other mystical writings there are few time-bound cultural references in his work and this gives to the writings of Niffari a very contemporary feel.

In this seminar we shall be reading and contemplating some of Niffari’s “Spiritual Addresses” in English translation, and exploring their relevance to us in the present moment.

We shall be using a new translation of Angela Jaffray

All texts will be supplied. There is no need to have attended our earlier seminars.

nothing will concentrate you on me but vision and trial.
If you stand firm in my vision,
I will try you with every kind of trial,

Course Description

​Ibn ‘Arabi’s great metaphysical vision, based upon the principle of ‘the oneness of being’, does not only present a comprehensive theoretical understanding of reality, it also has significant practical implications for the way we live our lives. This study course will explore some of these using texts from a number of his writings, considering issues such as forgiveness, response to suffering, belief, gratitude, and dreams and imagination.

No previous knowledge of Ibn ‘Arabi is required, and all texts will be provided.

Jane Clark is a long-term student of the Beshara School and has been involved in the study of the Islamic mystical tradition, particularly Ibn ‘Arabi and his school, for more than 40 years. She was for many years a Senior Research Fellow of the Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabi Society, and has lectured and conducted courses both in the UK (Oxford University Department of Continuous Education, The Temenos Academy, The Beshara Trust), and internationally in Spain, Egypt, Syria and USA. Jane is the editor of Beshara Magazine, which is concerned with the contemporary expression of a unitive perspective. She is currently working on new translations and studies of Ibn ‘Arabi’s works.

Workshop Details

The meeting between different faith and wisdom traditions is one of the great gifts and opportunities of our times, allowing at best for an enrichment of our lives and a deeper understanding of our place and purpose in the cosmos. In celebrating what is now possible, though, we can perhaps forget that conversations, exchanges, the sharing of practices and the melding of different worldviews have occurred in various ways throughout recorded history.  One particularly fruitful area is that occupied by Christian and Sufi philosophers, mystics, and spiritual seekers.

In the course offered here we will look at the beginnings, and some of the key figures, in Christian and Sufi traditions.  This is a vast area.  Some of us last year joined in a conversation between Rumi and St John of the Cross, and that small beginning has led to a wish for more extended consideration, particularly in understanding the nature of love, its blessings and its demands.  The opening of the mind and heart of love will be our guiding thread.

The course will draw particularly on our contemplative experience, insofar as this is focussed in chosen writings, especially poetry, and in meditative practice. In outline we will consider:

1. The worldview and spiritual path of Jesus
2. Responding to the divine in the Qur’an
3. St Ephrem the Syrian (306-373): the poetic theology of an Eastern Christian
4. Rabia al-Adawiyya (717-801), a prominent female mystic in early Islam
5. Evagrius Ponticus (Evagrius the Solitary) (345-399) foremost writer on prayer and meditation within the tradition of the mothers and fathers of the desert
6. Al Junayd (830-910), leading Sufi teacher and mystic in medieval Baghdad
7. Pseudo-Dionysius (Denis the Areopagite), fifth century Syrian monk and neo-Platonist theologian
8. Al Hallaj (858-922), Sufi mystic martyred for proclaiming his identity with the divine, “I am the Truth (al-Haqq)”

The course will begin in early October, meeting fortnightly on Saturdays for 1hr 30 mins, with four sessions before Christmas and four sessions in the new year.

Numbers will be limited so please reserve a place if you are interested. Please note: attendance for the whole course will be expected, with room for flexibility if other significant commitments arise.

There will be two groups covering the same material: Group A meeting 10.00am-11.30am UK time, and Group B (timed in particular to allow for attendees from North America) meeting 5.00pm-6.30pm (UK Time). Please find the relevant time for your time zone to join the sessions from November onwards.
