Malawi Mission Trip Report
You prayed—and God answered!
I am so excited to tell you about our trip to Africa. Thank you for holding the rope through your prayers, encouragement, and support. Our team truly felt it every step of the way!
Our American team traveled to Malawi to join our African partners in training pastors, church leaders, and church planters. The focus of our time together was Evangelism, Discipleship, Leadership, and Marriage. Over the course of three conferences, more than 800 leaders gathered—and God moved powerfully in every session.
As with every mission trip, we were reminded that our plans are not always God’s plans. On our connecting flight to Malawi, Dr. Mark Fenn and Caleb Bauer missed their flight and arrived in Malawi 24 hours late (missing the first conference). I must admit, I was discouraged at first and asked God what He wanted me to do with this unexpected time.
That’s when He stirred my heart to introduce D-Groups—a discipleship initiative that’s now becoming one of the most exciting next steps for the churches in Malawi. In 2026, 50–60 churches will launch D-Groups as a pilot program, with a shared vision to see 5,000 churches equipped for disciple-making within the next five years. *If Mark and Caleb hadn’t missed that flight, I might never have considered D-Groups for the churches—God truly works all things together for good!
On Sunday, Pastor Mark Fenn, Pastor Brad Marchman, and I each preached in different churches. At the church where I spoke, attendance was light at first, so I went outside into the village and invited people in personally. Normally, about 60–70 attend, but that day we filled the church with over 100 people.
When I invited people to come forward, bow, and confess Jesus as Lord. One came, then another, and another. By the end, 36 people became new followers of Christ.
The ONE Focus strategy has changed the way thousands of African churches do evangelism (it is more effective and less costly).
On our last day, we hosted a Business Leader Conference with over 150 in attendance. Our goal was to help businesspeople grow as leaders and share the Gospel. By God’s grace, over 40 people accepted Christ!
Church Catalyst, BridgeWay Church, First West Church, and other supporters have been partnering since 2018 to train, coach, and equip churches through the One Focus Evangelism Initiative. In just seven years, over 22,000 churches across Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania have been impacted!
Because of your faithful prayers and giving, we were not only able to go—we witnessed incredible fruit and saw God move in mighty ways. The people of Malawi are hungry to know Jesus and to grow deeper in their faith. They have so little, yet their hearts overflow with gratitude and the joy of the Lord.

God Makes the Impossible Possible
Several years ago, a good friend of mine named Ed approached me about going on an Extreme Mission Trip to the Himalayan Mountains to reach a group of people in China who had never heard the Gospel. I prayed about it, and God did not tell me “no.” I had gone with Ed on mission trips to Honduras in the past and they had been physically challenging. This trip was much more rigorous, requiring eight months of training. This is how I saw the opportunity: how far am I willing to go to share the Good News of Jesus?
The first goal I had was to train for hiking four to five hours at a time with fifty pounds on my back. After buying my gear, I worked my way up from walking with an empty backpack to filling it with a large landscape rock from our flower bed. I carried the rock in my backpack while I walked and, eventually, did the stair climber at my gym. After only a few minutes on the stair climber, I was very fatigued. A good friend and manager of the club asked a question I will never forget: “So, how much weight do you have in your backpack?” I answered with, “I’m not sure, but it has to be close to fifty pounds.” He suggested I weigh it on the scales and I agreed, wanting to show off my prowess. To my dismay, the scales said that rock weighed thirteen pounds. Could this be some joke? Could the scales be broken? Thirty-seven pounds to go? This is impossible, I thought.
However, God has a history of making the impossible possible, and sometimes it is in the places we feel the least prepared and most vulnerable that God does his greatest works through us. I did complete the training, and six months later, our team left for the Himalayas.
No Coincidences with God!
I left with a team of nine traveling thirty-three hours to our destination. When we arrived at the airport in Kunming, China, we retrieved our luggage and I was assigned the bag with the religious materials that could land me in jail for a day or two. “Go through last,” our leader said, “and whatever you do, do not let them put that bag through the x-ray machine.” He must have seen the look on my face, because he added, “It’s very unusual for them to run the bags through the x-ray, so don’t worry.”
All the other guys got through security without any problems and were looking back at me. As I approached the security area, I was stopped by a Chinese officer with a rifle in hand. He said something in Chinese and I just ignored him and kept walking. He persisted as I tried to communicate with my body language that I did not understand him. He pointed his rifle at the bag and then at the x-ray machine. I began to panic. My mind was reeling. All this way, I thought, all this training, and I am going to a Chinese jail?
As the bag was put on the conveyer belt, I could see my teammates’ faces and knew this was bad. All I knew to do was pray that God would intervene. I was standing there with my head bowed, slowly walking to the exit, assuming they would tell me what to do next. When the bag went through with no problem, I picked it up and headed outside. What had just happened?
The guys told me that as my bag was traveling through the x-ray machine, the person watching the screen was interrupted at the precise moment it passed. There is no question that God protected us. (Coincidences do not happen very often. If you are a Christ follower, God is constantly working in your life. Look for those glimpses each day of him working miracles. Instead of saying, “Guess what happened today,” we should be saying, “Look at what God did in my life today!”)
God’s Provision
During the trip, including leech infestation and other things I will not mention, I became very ill. We were climbing straight up a mountain with no place to stop and sit down. By noon, I began feeling very weak and nauseous. This was my worst nightmare. The team discussed turning back, but I refused that option. It is not that I am a hero, but I could not fathom the mission being a failure. There was now an urgency to find a place to camp for the day. According to the GPS, we had at least another six or seven hours to our designated spot, but I could not imagine another ten minutes, much less six or seven hours.
Dr. Michael Walker took point to lead the team up the mountains. Ed was behind me to balance every step. I will never forget Ed’s words: “Slow and steady.” After each passing hour, I kept thinking I could not go on. Around 5:00, I heard we still had two hours to go. I remember crying out to the Lord, “I cannot make it, I am done.” Then it hit me. Part of my motivation for making this trip was pride. I confessed to God, and within a few minutes, Michael said, “I found a large enough clearing that we can camp for the night.”
The next day we completed our mountain climb and reached the area inhabited by the Nosu people. We walked down the paths they often travel, placing cassette tapes of the Bible, sealed in plastic bags, along the weeded trails. We knew that eventually they would be found by the Nosu. It was pure joy to finally do what we trained and prayed to do—to drop off our precious packages of God’s Word of life. We had to leave before the bags were found to avoid possible arrest, but His Word is powerful!
Going down the mountain was much easier, and I was able to take in all the beauty around me. Obviously, it took many hours to hike back, followed by a long flight home, but we accomplished our ONE Focus mission—to get the Gospel to the Nosu people of China.

Our team and church members had been praying for good attendance and for the people to be open to the Gospel. After the men and women had received the medical tests, they sat in groups of 5-6 with two of our team members. Since Leroy and I were late, we had the “perfect” spot for our group—downstairs by the busy street and right outside the only restroom!
Even with all the distractions, God’s power was with us. We shared the Gospel 10 times with 46 different people, and 45 professed their faith in Jesus Christ! And by the way, one person was already a Christ follower and shared his testimony with the group. Each person was so sincere and focused on God’s Word and His truth.
I am so thankful for a Monday afternoon in Ecuador, God’s power and changed hearts.
]]>I had been leading a Training Conference for around 100 leaders when one of the pastors asked me to preach. A big part of this story is that I had been having sinus problems for a couple of weeks and having trouble with my voice. After speaking from 8:00 a.m. until after 5:15 p.m., my voice was already weak. This was at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and the church services were at 8:00, 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. the next day. I was taking a chance on my voice holding out.
After leaving the training, I tried to rest my voice as much as possible and prepared my message. I awoke at 4:00 a.m. with terrible pain in my throat and could not speak. I prayed, took medicine and rested until early morning. One of the churches I work with in Texas sent an email about a baptism service they were having. I took the opportunity to ask for specific prayer for my voice. By 7:30 a.m., I was able to speak with a raspy voice and headed to the church.
My interpreter & I arrived after the worship service had started. As I waited to speak, there was one of the elders who brought a cup of coffee on a tray. This man was such a servant; so humble and sweet. I did not want anything to drink, but I didn’t want to offend him. I took two sips of that coffee and my voice completely cleared!! I took another sip, and no one would be able to tell that anything was wrong with my voice.
I spoke for three services and prayed over at least 150 people (over 200 people came forward for prayer during the three services). It was 2:00 before I left the church and my voice was still strong and clear.
]]>While going through customs, I said my usual “Good morning, how are you?” to one of the airport personnel. He must not have many people speak to him that early in the morning so he offered to upgrade my seat. My favorite place to sit is by the window, so I was excited to switch from the middle.
As I entered the plane, there was a lady on the aisle and in the middle seat was a young man dressed in a suit. As I sat down, I realized, “God surely you would not put me by a Latter Day Saint for 3 hours because you KNOW I will have to talk to him!” I introduced myself to Elder Adler, and said, “I am going to have to sleep for a few minutes, but I want to talk to you when I wake up.”
Let’s just say the conversation between myself and Elder Adler was interesting. He was a very humble and caring young man. He had been in Ecuador for two years and had very little contact with his family. During his stay in Ecuador his schedule was: Breakfast, 8:00 a.m.; Training 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.; Mission Work (door to door) 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Elder Adler was more open than a Mormon has ever been. He shared the belief that one day he will be a God and I was able to share that Satan is deceiving him just like he deceived Adam and Eve. He also said he had not sinned in two years.
Before the plane touched down, he committed to and earnestly pray for two weeks that God would reveal the truth of His Word.
For hours, we were talking and didn’t realize others around us were listening. As I exited the plane, several people said they were blessed by the words I shared. God isn’t kidding when He puts people in our path who need His truth. I pray I will never be too busy, tired or preoccupied to notice!
]]>In April, Dr. Michael Walker, Rayland Trisler, and Jimmy Eley traveled to Africa. Their primary purpose was to share ONE Focus with pastors and leaders but, they also ministered to many lay people in the village. The conditions were extreme, but the people were very receptive, and many trusted Christ as Savior.
Dr. Walker and his team held two separate conferences for pastors and leaders with over 400 participants. They were able to use the ONE Focus Manual translated into the local Malawi tribal language. Many pastors were interested in the initiative. Dr. Walker heard one of the pastors say, “The idea of one on one witnessing outside church was a revelation idea for him.”
Here are Dr. Walker’s thoughts about the trip:
- Was it what I expected? Not at all, not even close.
- Was it worth it; cost, time, difficulty? All 3 of us say YES, YES, YES! A thousand times over!
- Would I have gone if I had known the exact situation? No! We would have missed a great blessing from God. Also, it would have been a tragic physical error and grieved the Holy Spirit.
- Was it beneficial to those attending and well received? Extremely! I believe it will allow ONE Focus to touch 1000’s! Though the pastors in Malawi and Mozambique do not have the technology or finances to do ONE as the U. S. churches, they have a great heart for God, desperation for the lost, and hunger for spiritual help.
Please pray for the Director of Missions, Mark Zimbiri and the other pastors and leaders in Malawi as they use ONE Focus to reach others for Christ.
“My name is Xiaofang Guo and I became a Christian 5 years ago. I have been in FHLC since then, attending the Sunday worship and doing some church works. Every Sunday I take my 8 year-old son to church and he has come to rely on the Lord more. I love my FHLC and the brothers and the sisters in the FHLC.
The only thing which is not good among all the good things of following the Lord is that my husband is still an unbeliever. This is a soul illness in my heart. The good aspect of this case is that he does not oppose me to follow Jesus. He himself drives me and my son to the campus every Sunday. But every time when I invite him to the church, he refuses. If he comes occasionally, he is not like to do it. I hope he comes to Jesus, but I lack the courage to draw him to the arms of our Lord.
At the beginning of 2017, my FHLC started a movement called ‘One Focus.’ From then on every Sunday morning we are reminded if we have prayed for our ‘one’ last week and if we have done something for our ‘one’ in the last week. This reminder time and time again makes me think about myself and my deeds. I started to request my husband to come with me to church and to pray for him together with my younger son. I hope God will soften his heart, put down his inner pride, and come to the presence of the Lord. At home I often talk about the people and things that have happened in FHLC in order to make him feel a close relationship with my church.
My normal work is kind of busy and I need to take care of my son. Though we often pray with my son, we seldom read the Bible. In the recent month, I started to read the Bible and asked my husband to do so as well. By my action and my request, he also started to read the Bible.
My husband is not a believer yet today, but I can see that his heart has become much softer than before. I will continue to work on him together with my son, so the date comes earlier when he becomes a follower.”

Dr. Michael Walker and a team of prayer warriors traveled to Washington, D.C. for Awaken the Dawn and The Call. The following is Dr. Walker’s account of what he experienced:
A call for prayer and worship in our nation’s capital on 9/11/2015 became a national effort this month. Thousands gathered in David’s Tent at our nation’s capital for four continuous days celebrating Christ and calling out for His intervention. On Thursday, thousands joined together on the Washington DC Mall to pray.
Each state had a prayer and worship tent which operated 24 hours a day for three days. An additional eight regional tents offered evangelism training and equipping, sending out teams to share Christ. These teams witnessed, prayed, and experienced salvations and miracles.
On Sunday, The Call, a gathering specifically for women, took over the DC Mall offering interceding, worship, and prayer. Thousands of women called upon God for our nation and the divisions within it.
Though thousands gathered in person on the DC Mall for four days and millions watched the live simulcast not one reporter was noted. There was no mention of the event on any news network. Still, God was working and life after life changed and touched. Please continue to pray and visit David’s tent if in Washington. ]]>In October, Dr. Michael Walker traveled to 4 different villages in Honduras. While a mission team of five provided medical and dental care to over 500 people, other team members ministered to local believers and pastors. One of the main places of ministry was at the “dump” in Honduras. The people gather here to search for food and items to sell. Dr. Walker’s team shared the Gospel, prayed, and handed out gloves and hats at the dump. At night, they showed the Jesus films. Twenty-three people trusted Christ as their Savior and seeds were planted in the hearts of many others!
The last day our team leaders planned a tour of the local sights. We rode a bus to the tourist spot on the equator where there were shops and interesting attractions. Claudia, our tour guide did an excellent job giving details and answering questions. Our team was relaxed and “off the clock.”
At one point, I was standing beside Claudia, and she asked, “Are all of you related?” That was the perfect opportunity for me to say, “Yes, we are.” Claudia said, “Are all of you cousins?” “No, I said, “We are brothers and sisters.” She had a shocked look on her face and said, “Really?” My answer was, “Yes, we are brothers and sisters in Christ.”
We were not able to talk long, but I was able to ask Claudia if she knew about Jesus. Her answer was yes, she seemed unsure. I asked if she were to die today, why would God invite her into heaven. Her answer broke my heart. She said, “Well, I try to treat people nice, and I take care of 7 dogs.” At that point, Claudia had to continue the tour, and we were not able to continue our conversation.
That night our team met, and I asked the group to pray for Claudia. I also asked the team leaders to find her and water the seed that planted in her heart.
As Christians, our work never ends. Be ready to take advantage of the opportunities God gives; there are Claudias’ everywhere!
