]]>Obduction is an award-winning puzzle-adventure game and spiritual successor to Myst. It was developed by the team at Cyan, and originally released on August 24th, 2016.
Obduction was Cyan’s first crowdfunded project. The project achieved its funding goal in November 2013. Development on the game commenced soon after, with its release following approximately two and a half years later.
To help celebrate this anniversary, some members of the original Obduction team (Eric A. Anderson, Karl Johnson, and Hannah Gamiel) came together recently to do a retrospective on it, which you can find a recording of here.
If you haven’t already played Obduction, now is a great time to pick it up — it’s currently on sale for 60% off on Steam and the Epic Games Store through 9AM PDT on September 4th.
More information on Obduction and platforms it’s available to play on can be found here.

]]>Physical editions for our Myst and Riven remakes are on their way for for PS5, Xbox, and PC (Windows/Mac). There will be physical discs for the console versions, and the PC box will have a digital code. More news to come on this soon.
These cherished novels, originally published about 30 years ago, tell the origins of the Myst story and beyond, and were written by the creators of Myst and David Wingrove. These will be deluxe editions, with additional accessories and elevated craftsmanship compared to previous versions. More information will be available before the end of the year.
The annually held fan-run convention that celebrates all-things Cyan is returning to the town where the iconic Myst and Riven games were birthed. Cyan Co-Founder and gaming legend Rand Miller will also be in attendance to help celebrate our studio’s 40th anniversary! More information on event dates, registration details, and hotel information to come in the next several months.
We are also in early discussions for a possible Cyan-themed exhibition with a local cultural institution. More news on this will come as we are able to share it.
For the first time ever, we publicly shared a teaser trailer of Myst universe prototype codenamed “Project Anglerfish”, made in 2024/2025. This game is no longer in development, but as it was a labor of love and respect for the development team, we wanted to share the work originally made for publisher-eyes only. Here’s a summarized quote from our announcement:
“Over a year ago, the team here at Cyan spent about four months building a prototype for a new game in the Myst universe, codenamed ‘Project Anglerfish’. The prototype (and this teaser trailer made for it) were purpose-built for publisher-eyes only. For a variety of reasons, this project couldn’t move forward at the time, BUT we’re still immensely proud of the work the team did – so we’re sharing the teaser for the prototype with you all now.”
As a part of the “Paths Not (yet) Taken” presentation where “Project Anglerfish” was mentioned, multiple other project ideas, concepts, and prototype imagery created over the last 20+ years were shared – including early concepts for Obduction before it became the version of the game we know today, Lift, DiSC, and more.
For more information and answers to a few questions people have been asking, check out Adam Morgan’s great coverage of Anglerfish on his substack and with WIRED Magazine as a part of broader coverage on the state of funding for double-A games.
This game is currently planned to contain denser, more intricate game spaces than ever before, with new ways of exploring and uncovering information. We are currently in very early development stages of this game and will share more news on this later.

]]>First off, we’re happy to celebrate nearly 5 years since our remake of Myst was released on PC/Mac. Thank you so much to everyone who has purchased, played, and reviewed Myst over the last five years, and a special thanks to those who played our Rime update to Myst that we shipped in 2025. Your support enables us to keep doing what we do.
We recently pushed patch 3.3.0 for Myst (2020/2021) out, in addition to patch 1.9.0 for Riven (2024). Below are the patch notes, in addition to devlog on future support for the titles.

We’re looking into what it would take to update our remakes of Myst and Riven to the latest version of Unreal (5.8).
Currently, Myst and Riven are stuck on Unreal Engine 5.3.2. There’s a good reason for this – mainly being that native ray tracing support in the engine on Windows, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series platforms overall outside of the use of Lumen is basically “locked” to this version of Unreal.
If we update Myst and Riven to a version above 5.3.2, we would lose native-to-the-engine ray-tracing support in the game without fully converting Myst and Riven to using Lumen, which is not feasible at this time (especially for Myst) for a multitude of reasons.
There are other possible solutions to the removal of non-Lumen ray tracing in Unreal. One of these possible solutions is using NVIDIA’s ray tracing tech via what they’ve made available on GitHub and other locations… but we’ve historically experienced incompatibilities with building for multiple platforms when you factor in external tech like this, which creates tech debt and more manual exceptions to our engine’s codebase that become hard to maintain over time. Some folks may also suggest “rolling our own” version of ray tracing in the 5.8 engine outside of Lumen, but frankly, that will take up developer resources we simply do not (and will not) have available to create or maintain, especially as it is not an official effort supported by Epic.
Maybe the lack of ray-tracing in the game in the future doesn’t necessarily break anyone’s heart – but we do have to weigh the costs and benefits to any kind of engine upgrade before we proceed.
So what ARE the benefits to an upgrade to 5.8, you ask? Some of the benefits at this point would be:
Oh, and a pre-emptive clarification in case this comes up from some of y’all inquiring about AI tools in Unreal 5.8: the Myst and Riven remakes were not built using AI tools, and we have no intent to use AI tools in them in the future.
It is possible that when (or if) we do end up releasing a 5.8 version of Myst and Riven, we will make a “legacy” branch available of the 5.3.2 version of the game for a limited period of time, so folks can still experience ray-tracing. This would be similar to what we did for Myst, which allowed MacOS users on older MacOS versions or hardware to still be able to play the game through a beta branch.
It is also possible we will decide NOT to bring this update to platforms where ray-tracing is already supported in the game. The reality is that Myst and Riven currently run and play well on these platforms, and a 5.8 update is currently not mission critical to implement until a compatibility update may force our hand.
In any event… There are plenty of hurdles for us to overcome before we get Myst and Riven running well in Unreal Engine 5.8. We certainly have our work cut out for us in doing so. We cannot give any kind of estimate or timeline as to when this major update will occur, especially as we are now a very small team – other than saying that this will be, at the very least, many months away. What we CAN say though is that, again, your purchase and shared experience of Myst, Riven, and the rest of our catalog is what has supported our team of developers to continue working on our games for both many decades prior, and hopefully many decades to come.
Now, to sum things up for folks who did not want to read all of that, and also based off of concerns or feedback we got on our equivalent Myst patch post we made before on Steam:
Thanks for reading, and we hope y’all enjoy Myst and Riven for many, many years to come.

Myst: The Book of Atrus: Serving as a prequel to the events of Myst, this novel tells the coming of age story of Atrus and his strange apprenticeship to his father Gehn, who claims to wield the power to create worlds at the stroke of a pen.
Myst: The Book of Ti’ana: Ti’ana, known among humans as Anna, is the first woman from the outside world to enter the domain of D’ni. This is her story of trust and betrayal, and her struggle against the evil schemes that threaten the destruction of D’ni, and all that she loves.
Myst: The Book of D’ni: Set between the events of Riven and Myst III: Exile, Catherine and Atrus return to the devastated domain of the fabled D’ni civilization to fulfill their destinies and to try to begin again. There they find strange clues that lead them to one remaining hidden book—and the secret plan of the ancient D’ni masters.
We know you’ve been wanting this for a while, and it has been a real labor of love from our team over the past few years to bring it to you. We’ve been hard at work tweaking layouts, editing, designing, and proofing across all three novels to ensure the best digital experience possible!

]]>
Hi all,
We’re thrilled to announce that our “2.0” patches for Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), and Myst III: Exile are now out on Steam and GOG – and for the first time ever, all three titles are now available to purchase & play on the Mac App Store!
Steam: Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), and Myst III: Exile
GOG: Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), and Myst III: Exile
Mac App Store: Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), and Myst III: Exile
The 2.0 patches for all three games contain major quality-of-life improvements, including (but not limited to): more robust controller support, better save game support, and better platform support for both Windows and Mac. This also includes an official Steam Deck verified status for all three titles on Steam.
Here is the full list of changes between all three games:
Please note that this update removes 32-bit support for all three titles. This change really only applies to folks who have been playing these games on extremely old operating systems. If you are one of those users and wish to keep access to those builds, you can find them in the “last_32bit_release” beta branch on Steam or GOG for each game, which should be available without needing to enter a beta code.
If you encounter issues with this latest patch, please contact support@cyan.com.

We’ve been hard at work for the last few months coding, testing, and preparing to ship these changes to you all. Although these changes aren’t necessarily new content updates to the games, Cyan remains committed to continuing to support our legacy games on modern platforms when we’re able to. Riven: The Sequel to Myst was originally released 28 years ago, Myst: Masterpiece Edition was released around 25 years ago (if you ignore the very original release of Myst released 32 years ago), and Myst III: Exile was released 24 years ago.
Every purchase you make of our games goes toward our ability to support our titles years into the future. We consider ourselves outliers in the industry based on our ability and commitment to keep supporting our games for decades, but it is only possible with your support. We sincerely appreciate everyone who has purchased all three of these games and beyond!
There is no better time to experience Myst: Masterpiece Edition, Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), and Myst III: Exile. Thank you for your support, and enjoy!

About Cyan Worlds
Founded by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller in 1987, in 1991 Cyan began work on Myst. The goal: create a new kind of experience that felt more like a place than a game. There would be no dying, no shooting, no starting over, and no inventory – dramatic breaks from “traditional” gaming. Myst was about finding yourself lost in a world, exploring it to gain understanding, and ultimately becoming part of the story. The public response was nothing short of phenomenal.
To date, sales for Myst and its sequel Riven have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Myst also holds the honor of being the best-selling video game of the 20th century; a record that was not surpassed until 2003.
After five games in the Myst series, Cyan turned its attention to making an exciting new kind of Myst world. Uru allows players to join the adventure of a lifetime in the caverns of D’ni, a neverending world that lets players connect and explore together. Its free online version, Myst Online: Uru Live, spawned a thriving community and is still available to explore for free. More recently, Cyan Worlds has created titles supporting 2D and VR gameplay, including Obduction, Firmament, a remake of Myst, and a remake of Riven.
Cyan Worlds looks forward to releasing games currently in development and revealing new, exciting worlds yet to come. They draw from over three decades of experience telling stories in intriguing and unexpected ways, and continue to seek innovative ways to subvert standard videogame tropes.
