There is nothing worse than having a prospect that expresses tons of interest and enthusiasm in your service or product upon initial contact and then seems to fall off the face of the earth when you try and contact them again…they don’t return your calls or answer your emails.  It can appear like they lost interest in you all together.

When asked what the most important trait you need to have to be a successful salesperson, I always reply with “persistence”. Don’t confuse persistence with being annoying.  You need to be focused on your objective and be able to stick to your action plan regardless of the pushback. You need to also be flexible and be willing to change your goals or tactics until you find the right combination that allows you to connect with your prospect.

THE DREADED “NO”

I never look at a “No” as a “No”.  A “No” to me is simply a “Yes” that I have not gotten yet. I go into every call with that mindset and I keep in mind that I need the prospect more than they need me even though I know my product or service will greatly help their business. There is nothing worse than getting a “No” followed by the dreaded dial tone.  When you have become so desperate and annoying to your prospect that they feel the only way out is to hang up the phone, then you can pretty much consider that “No” to actually mean “NO!”  So let’s not let that happen!

There will always come a time when you have reached a point in the sales process with a prospect where they are simply not going to buy from you and you must resign to the fact that you must give up.  Personally, I do not give up easily. In many cases I refuse to give up at all, so I change my course of action with that prospect and I begin to look at them with a long-term goal in mind.  Hey, why not? I am going to need sales in the future just as much as I need them today.  I would rather end the conversation on a positive and happy note with a cold prospect and leave the door slightly open for a future conversation.  You never know what is going to happen in your prospect’s future as things my change and a need for your offering may develop.

The best way to handle this is to put that prospect in what I call a “cold prospect action plan”.

COLD PROSPECT ACTION PLAN

1)      Develop other contacts (or friends) within the company.
When working with any prospect, I always try and define more than one contact within the company. I don’t do this to “go around the back” of the main contact, but I simply like to have more points of contact to get different perspectives on their problems, needs and wants. When I was selling printing machinery, I would always have contacts in executive management, production and maintenance. In many cases I would find that if my conversations stalled at the executive level, that my relationships with production and maintenance could turn them into advocates with management and help me unlock some doors. The old saying of “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” certainly applies here with regards to your points of contact.

However, what if you are working with a smaller company; perhaps the main contact is the only contact? In those cases, I try to identify customers of theirs and convert them into my advocates.  When I was in online advertising sales, if I called a small company where the owner was the only contact and I was not getting anywhere, I would research online to find customers who love their product and talk to them about how I could better help the promotion of their product.  It involves being creative and most importantly, listening so you can revise your plan to show the prospect options that can help their business.

2)      Create an email list and add the prospect to a monthly campaign.
I have found that just because a prospect is not calling me back that it does not mean they are not interested.  Many times their business has redirected them and caused your offering to be put on the back burner.  The best way to gently move you back into the forefront of their mind is to reach out to them on a monthly basis with an email that offers something of value.  Don’t email asking for the sale every month as no one likes to be hounded.  However, if you can find some informative tips or even write some yourself that you think a prospect might find valuable then send different tips each month. This will show your prospect that you care about them and helping their business rather than only being out for yourself.

3)      Use non-conventional “reach-out” methods.
I am not a huge believer in constantly reaching out to a cold prospect via email.  Honestly, email has made a lot of salespeople today lazy.  Rather than picking up the phone or mailing a letter, they figure they can simply write a short email, click send and their job is done.  When you consider the amount of email that your prospect probably gets each day, your note will most likely get lost in the fray.
Rather than emailing often, go to your local stationary store, or use one of the many online services to send a post card to your prospect, or send a hand-written letter. Find an article online that you feel will help their business and print a copy out and mail it to them.  Studies prove that in today’s world, regular mail is becoming much more effective than email for staying in touch with someone.  Not to mention it takes a lot more effort to send that postcard or hand-write that letter than it does to send and email and your prospect will take notice!

Do this monthly!

4)      Personalize your correspondence… with your face.
Have you ever noticed business cards, flyers, ads and listings for real estate agents? One thing most of them have in common is that they all have the agent’s photo on it.  This allows the prospect to know who the person is that they are being contacted by. It puts a face to the pitch – so to speak. This is an opportunity to go a little outside the box and try and grab your prospects attention.  You could simply use a head shot of yourself, which is better than nothing at all.  However, maybe you have a cute photo of you with your child, or a photo of you with an inquisitive look on your face that you could use. I personally love using photos with me and my kids because it shows the prospect that I am not a “sales guy” but I am a family man. It brings you down to earth and takes the edge off the conversation. Family men aren’t scary after all, right? At that point you are simply a loving father who is working hard to provide for your family.  There are also times when I like to use a photo with a looks as if I am pondering something or even one with a slightly funny look on my face.  Again they show personality, which helps disarm the feeling that they are about to be sold to.

Words of caution… Don’t go over the top on the photos you choose. The idea is to disarm the prospect and get them to feel your personality and not be so threatened.  If your photo looks like a mug shot after you just knocked off a liquor store, then I might pass on that one.  If your idea of a funny photo is one that was taken during the middle of a drunken frat party, then I might pass on that as well.  You don’t want the prospect to feel that you are a “wild card”. You want to build trust and get them to connect with you. You do not want them to be scared or not take your seriously.

While there is no guaranty that any of these tips will convert that cold prospect into a buyer, they will certainly keep you, your company and your message in front of them.  You will find that when the time is right, the prospect will become hot again.  Sometimes all it takes is a note from you at the exact right time, which will turn them around.  It’s all about timing!  The more creative you can be and if you plan to reach out with informative and relevant information on a timely basis, the more chances you have to reengage with your prospect.

A parting tip… Be sure to vary the time of the month or day of the week that you reach out to your cold prospects.  If you try and automate this where on the 1st or 15th of each month, you are blasting an email, the prospect will catch on and after a while they will simply trash them without reading because you have trained them to know you are going to “pitch” them again on a specific day.

Variety is the spice of life!  Add variety to your interactions with your prospects and you will spice up their lives and make yourself unforgettable.

Your Business or Your Job – Be Thankful For Your Opportunities https://chasingthecarrot.com/your-business-or-your-job-be-thankful-for-your-opportunities/ https://chasingthecarrot.com/your-business-or-your-job-be-thankful-for-your-opportunities/#respond Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:16:32 +0000 https://chasingthecarrot.com/?p=8487 Out of the millions of people in the country that make the trek every day to work at an office, factory, store or some other business where they punch a clock and trade their time for money, you get up every day and work for yourself.  There is nothing better than that in my opinion. There is a lot of satisfaction in knowing that every decision you make, every second of the day you work and every drop of sweat is infused into growing your “personal empire” no matter how large or small your business is. In the U.S. every person has the right to be their own boss and run their own business which is something we often take for granted, since this is not the case in many countries around the world.  We have a lot of freedoms and liberties that we need to be thankful for.

I spent most of my adult life self-employed, starting my first business at the age of 18. At the age of 22 I sold that business to my partner and went to work for an international manufacturer as the director of sales and marketing.  This was the single best work experience that I had as it set the groundwork for any other business that I would have in my future. During that job, I developed the fundamentals in customer service, time management, marketing strategies, sales and closing skills and much more. That job was the equivalent of a college education.  After that I spent 10 years as a business development director for a dot com where my primary responsibilities were sales and marketing.  What was unique about this position was that I was a sub-contractor so I ran it as my own business and essentially was self-employed.  I was able to set my own hours and was in complete control of my income and had the ability to be there to enjoy all the firsts with my children, never missing any doctor appointments, school activities, or anything else for that matter when it came to them.  Since then I started several other business, most of which I ran part-time with the help of an employee or two until about three years ago where I reentered the “work force” taking a job for a publishing company.

Some may look at moving from being self-employed to going back to work as a step backwards, but thankfully I love what I do and most of all I love the people that I work with.  This was something that I sorely missed when working from home for 10 years.  My only interaction during the day was with the mail carrier when he/she delivered my mail.  While I love my job there are many things I miss about being self-employed, like making my own hours and the ability to generate more income when and if I wanted to. The only real complaint I have about my current job is the commute, which averages about an hour and 15 minutes each way.  This is a killer, but I have learned to make the most of it by listening to audio books and podcasts.  So I try to look at my commute as my time to learn which makes it less painful.

I am thankful for the opportunities that I have in my present position and I treat what I do as if it was my own business.  Those lessons that I’ve learned over the years I feel makes me a better employee and a better asset to the company.

Many people I know who work for someone else talk about their job as being imprisoned with no room for growth or future opportunities.  I feel bad for those people because life is short and it is tough to hear someone basically give up or reside themselves to being okay with the status quo. To those people I usually tell them to keep looking or consider doing something for you.  Again everyone has the opportunity for more. I am fortunate in my job that I have a lot of room to be creative and there is always something new going on and while it may be limiting as far as income potential is concerned, it is satisfying in the work I do and the people I work with.

Do I miss being self-employed?  YES!  Very much so! But at this point in my life, I am thankful for my job and the opportunities that it affords me.  While working for myself is certainly in my future plans, how far in the future, I have no idea.  Maybe something part-time will fill the self-employed desire in the future.  I have a lot of ideas and a lot of things on my “bucket list” and I know when the timing is right that I will one day be able to check them off.

This year, as write this two days before Thanksgiving, I reflect back and am very thankful for my children, my family,  my work, my health challenges that I’ve overcome, the good friends I have, and a special person that came into my life at the perfect time.

What Do Your Customers Want? Tips on How to Get Them to Tell You https://chasingthecarrot.com/what-do-your-customers-want-tips-on-how-to-get-them-to-tell-you/ https://chasingthecarrot.com/what-do-your-customers-want-tips-on-how-to-get-them-to-tell-you/#respond Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:15:29 +0000 https://chasingthecarrot.com/?p=8485 In all my years of selling one of the most frustrating things that I’ve had to find ways to overcome was dealing with customers who answer all of my questions with “I don’t know”. That immediately started the game of “OK then I will just start guessing.” You can avoid the guessing game by trying this technique that I’ve found really helped getting my customers to open up.

Any good salesperson knows that asking questions is the number one way to learn about your customer’s business, their pains and hopefully their needs. I can’t tell you how many times I sat across from a customer that I was trying to help–knowing full well that I COULD help, if I could just get them to give me some information about what their needs and goals are.

The main problem that I found was that no matter what question I asked, the answer was always the same… “I don’t know” (or something similar).  How could they not know?  I mean it is their business right?  Talk about a stalemate in a conversation.  The worst part is trying to keep the sales process moving. I would go into “super salesman” mode and begin to tell them everything that I thought they needed. Sadly, this often left my custom cold when trying to get them to agree to the sale.

The problem with this type of customer is trying to find a better way to engage with them so they will start to really think about what they need and want and then share that with me.

How did I overcome this? There is an old saying that you can often say more with fewer words.  In the case of selling, it was getting more with fewer words. Simply put, I would ask shorter questions. Many times I would ask questions that I felt were short and to the point, but considering I knew my product and or service better than my customer, they would see my questions as complicated and confusing.

I would often ask questions that had a few facts buried into it which resulted in my question being perceived as more of a statement which I was asking for feedback or their agreement.  When you know your product or service well and are proud of it, you can often times be overzealous in your questions which cause your customers to become disengaged, giving you a cold shoulder or blank stare.

I overcame this by asking a series of short questions that could not be answered with one word.  No “yes” or “no” questions. I would focus on asking questions that focused on “why” and “how”. I would also ask questions like “Could you explain that to me?” or “What is the biggest problem with that process?”

I instantly found that he shorter the question I asked, the longer and more detailed the answer I got was. After their answer, I would ask with another short question trying to extrapolate more on what they just said.  By doing this the customer does all the talking which is what you want. This is where you need to perfect the skill of being a good listener.  If they are talking you will learn what their needs, goals, pains and objections are. Before you know it, they will have revealed to you exactly what they need so you can educate them on how you can best serve them.

There are two main things to keep in mind when using the short question method.

One, ask easy, non-confrontation questions that you know they will respond.
Once they give you their response, you can continue asking short questions like, “Can you give me an example?” Then you need to pause and not say a word.  Listen!  Let the customer give you the information and then follow up with another short question like “How?” or “Why?” You are basically trying to do whatever you can to get them to talk more.

The second thing to remember is NOT to keep asking the same short questions.
If you do you will come across more like an inquisitive 4-year-old than a professional sales person. I found that the easiest way to avoid this is to pick up on a single item that they shared with you and focus further questioning on that.

When you focus on a single item, it demonstrates to the customer that you are truly listening and care about what they are saying. Nine out of ten times, if done properly your customer will share exactly what they need and will begin to ask you questions about the features and benefits of your product or service.

Less is more! Shorter questions will almost always get you longer answers. Conversely asking longer questions typically get you short and useless answers. If you want to actually learn about your customers needs and wants, take my advice as you will get there much quicker by asking shorter questions.

Book review: Crush It!: Why Now is the Time to Cash in on your Passion https://chasingthecarrot.com/book-review-crush-it-why-now-is-the-time-to-cash-in-on-your-passion/ https://chasingthecarrot.com/book-review-crush-it-why-now-is-the-time-to-cash-in-on-your-passion/#respond Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:14:45 +0000 https://chasingthecarrot.com/?p=8483 I love a good marketing brand; especially one that you can ask just about any person on the street about and they can identify with the campaign, person or company. I am always intrigued with campaigns that go viral or become a household name… companies like Geico, Nike, Amazon and more. However, if I were to get into a conversation with a small business owner and talk about campaigns from these companies and others, they would almost always look at me and say, “Sure they can do it because they have millions to spend.” And while there may be some truth to that, I began a mission to learn about ways that a common every day mom and pop business can make their mark and build a solid personal or business brand without the need for millions in backing. In fact, I was looking to ways to do it for little to no money at all.  And that search online led me to Gary Vaynerchuk’s book,

Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion

The book was published in 2009, and I just read it recently. Yes, I guess I am a little behind the times but who cares?  The book is timeless and everything that Gary talks about is as relevant, if not more so than it was in 2009.  I read mixed reviews on the book with some people claiming the content was simplistic and shallow while others said it was one of the best books they’ve ever read.  Since I often disagree with people on book reviews, I wanted to give Crush It! a read for myself.

When I say “read” I should really be saying “listen” since I have a long commute every day to the office and little free time to sit and actually read books, I decided to consume Crush It! in audiobook format and I am very glad I did since Gary narrated the book himself and his personality is incredible and he really keeps you engaged.

I know what you are thinking … “Gary Vayner-who?” That is what I said when I first saw the book.  So I did some research on Gary and I strongly recommend that you do to as you will have a much better appreciation for the book.  Gary’s personal website is www.garyvaynerchuk.com.

WHO IS GARY V?

Gary’s parents are Russian immigrants who settled in New York when they came to America looking to take part in the “land of opportunity” and all it had to offer. Gary’s father worked at a liquor store and eventually owned his own store.  As a teenager, Gary worked behind the counter.  Since he was too young to actually consume what the store sold, he decided to read The Wine Spectator and learn all he could about wine. He was not able to train his palette on wine, so he decided to study the different flavors that are associated with wine, including obscure fruits and vegetables, dirt, tobacco, wood, grass and even sweat socks.

During his college tenure, he came up with a plan to rebrand the business as Wine Library and establish himself as an expert. He speaks a lot about DNA and how your DNA can guide you to the best path to build your personal brand.  In Gary’s case, it was a video blog called Wine Library TV.  Gary disliked the snobby and traditional wine aficionados and knew that he could do better. This paired with his passion for wine, business and the internet led Gary to grow Wine Library TV to having a staggering following, which was the foundation of the massive personal brand that he has become.

Gary is young, confident and has a very in-your-face personality that cannot help but captivate the reader (or listener). I recommend checking out a couple episodes of Wine Library TV prior to engaging in the book.  I can certainly see why some people might be turned off by Gary’s personality, like listening or watching Tony Robbins, you cannot help but becoming sucked in by his charisma and boisterous passion.  I am thinking that one reason that I have read so many negative reviews is because he is so energetic and confident that he makes it all seem so effortless and fun.  Gary continually reiterates that this book is not a “get rich quick” scheme and becoming successful will take more hard work, commitment and passion that you can imagine. If you follow his life’s story, you can easily see how what he writes can happen for anyone.

His formula seems simple; identify what you are most passionate about, develop a platform to build your personal brand, and work your butt off for as long as it takes to accomplish your goals. I whole-heartedly believe in his message and while I know that not everyone has the passion, expertise, enthusiasm and creativity that Gary does, I do believe that if you believe in yourself and you build your brand based on your passion, then everyone is capable of the success that Gary has earned.

A LOOK INSIDE “Crush it!”

If you are stuck in a job that you hate, or a business that is stagnant, then this book is sure to help get you motivated and at least thinking that there can be more for you in your future. “Crush It!” is an relatively short and easy read; the audiobook took me about 3 hours to finish. Everything that Gary writes (or says) is simple and straight to the point.  If you are a seasoned business owner you might find the book simple and boring, but if you really give it a chance, I am sure you will find gold nuggets that will start your mind spinning and you won’t be able to help but be inspired to take the next step. Even if you are working a job that you love, Gary gets you pumped to be all you can be, so to speak.

YOU NEED TO HUSTLE AND WORK HARDER THAN YOU EVER IMAGINE

Working hard and hustling is resounding theme in the book and he makes no bones about it.  Don’t read this book thinking you are going to be rich and famous in a month.  In fact, even a year or two might be short according to Gary. I love that he really drills this into the reader.  Persistence, passion, drive and hard work WILL lead you to success.  I strongly believe this.

If you are not a social media expert, don’t like being in front of a camera or on a microphone or don’t like to write, fear not!  Crush It! is about getting you excited and looking past the excuses. It is about identifying your passion and burning a vision into your mind that you can turn that passion into your legacy. You don’t need to be good at everything, you just need to exploit the main thing you are good at and build from there.

BASICS, HOW-TOS, RESOURCES AND EXAMPLES

A large part of the book contains references to various websites as examples, tools, tips and more. It is handy to have a way to write these down if you are listening to the audio version of the book.  In Chapter 10, Gary includes a to do list that can help start you on the correct path. The list includes:

  • Starting a Blog. Seems simple, right? Today you would think everyone has a blog, but you would be amazed at how many businesses don’t have one. It is a must and will serve as the basis for you building your personal brand.
  • Create a Facebook fan page.
  • Open a Twitter account with your brand name
  • Get an inexpensive “flip” style video camera if you intend to do a video blog.  It does not have to be fancy, it just has to work
  • Buy your name as a URL
  • Make sure you have a big button on your site that says “Want to do business with me”

WHY YOU NEED TO READ CRUSH IT!?

If you feel like you are stuck in a rut, or you know you are capable of more than you presently have in your life, or if you wake up each day and are not completely happy, then run, don’t walk, and get a copy of Crush It!. This is not an academic book, but rather it is practical and straightforward. So if you are looking for a widely intellectual, insightful or philosophical business book, then you may not enjoy this book.  However, if you have heard of Gary, or you choose to learn about him before exploring this book, then I am certain that you will enjoy it.   If you can, I would strongly suggest getting the audio book as the words in the book are further enhanced by Gary’s fire, character, and passion.

Overall I would say that the best reason to get this book is because it is fun, inspiring and full of great ideas, resources, and motivation. Even if you get just one idea from this book, you will be much further along in the building of your personal brand or business.

What drives our decisions and actions? https://chasingthecarrot.com/what-drives-our-decisions-and-actions/ https://chasingthecarrot.com/what-drives-our-decisions-and-actions/#respond Sat, 24 Aug 2024 20:12:55 +0000 https://chasingthecarrot.com/?p=8481 o quote Anthony Robbins, “Everything we do in life can be attributed to two things; to avoid pain or to gain pleasure.”  Is it really that simple? In my opinion, yes it is!

If you think about it, even the most minor or mundane things that you do in your life fall into these two actions.  You wake up in the morning and brush your teeth, why? To avoid the pain of cavities and going to the dentist, or perhaps to gain the pleasure of having clean teeth and fresh breathe.  You go to work every day, why? To gain the pleasure of having money, or perhaps you get a lot of satisfaction from your job, or is it because you want to avoid the pain of not having money to meet your needs?

So why is this thought process important?

Well, for starters, many people procrastinate in life and taking the task at hand and putting it into these two categories can help you in breaking the procrastination cycle.  For example, lets say you have a project due by this Friday and today is Monday.  You know you have to finish the project but knowing you have 4 days ahead of you, it is easy to put it off until tomorrow or the next day.  You need to evaluate which internal power is stronger; gaining pleasure or avoiding pain.

Lets break it down

To Gain Pleasure… Think about what pleasure you can get from finishing the project early. First, getting it done will relax you and take that nagging feeling away from the back of your mind, that elephant will be off your back.  You will also have the rest of the week to work on other projects that interest you.  Or maybe you can take a day off or just simply not be as stressed for the rest of the week.  Your boss, co-workers, and/or client might be impressed that you finished early, and a compliment from another person is always a form of pleasure.  And don’t forget about the personal satisfaction that you get from completing a task.

To Avoid Pain… Think about the pain involved in waiting until the last minute to get that project done.  You will have that nagging pain in the back of your mind, which will make it hard to concentrate on other things that you want/need to do because this project is not complete.  Maybe waiting until the last minute leaves you with no (or little) time to make changes or adjustments to make your company/client happy. And then there always the possibility of something happening out of your control that will make it next to impossible to complete, like getting sick or a storm that causes you to lose power. And ultimately there is the pain which would come from you losing the job or client if you cannot come through on time.

So what do you do?

I cannot tell you what to do.  You have to weight these pain/pleasure emotions in your mind and decide which one has more influence. I can say that from my personal experience, I love the pleasure that comes from not having something undone and weighing on my mind.   Either way there are a consequence to both, however, there is definitely less pain associated with the consequences of getting the project or task done sooner than later.

As you move through life and are faced with major or important decision and tasks, you might find thinking about the principals of pain versus pleasure will help you come to a decision faster and will make you more productive in all areas of your life.
