Jozi Gold Taproom opens in central Johannesburg
I will admit that it took me a while to find out about this, so while it’s not recent news, it was news to me and might well be to you.
Jozi Gold Brewing Company started as a contract brand, debuting at Capital Craft Beer Festival in 2025. Earlier this year they opened a taproom in Braamfontein, with all beers brewed on site. There are six beers on tap and a menu of bar favourites with a few South African twists. Upstairs is a 100-seater live music venue featuring local jazz performers on select days.
Zwakala celebrates tenth birthday
Zwakala Brewery in Magboeskloof, Limpopo, recently celebrated their 10th anniversary. The family run, farm-based brewery put on a party to mark the milestone, with live music and a R10 draft special. Check out the full write-up of their big birthday over on their website.
Candy Cane adds grape cooler to their range
Charity beer brand Candy Cane has added a grape spirit cooler to their range. Grape Spritz is a pink-hued, 5% ABV cooler, available via Shackleton Brewing Company’s online store. As with their beers, all proceeds from the sale of the cooler go to local cancer warriors.
Jomp opens new taproom in central Rustenburg
North West-based Jomp Brewing Company has opened a new taproom in the Greystone Crossing Mall in Rustenburg. The taproom, which serves pizzas and Jomp’s beers, as well as a range of cocktails, launched in May. It will run in conjunction with their farm brewpub 20km outside of the town.
Just Brewing launches King Julian tribute beer
Benoni-based Just Brewing has launched King Julian, a collab IPA brewed as a tribute to Just Brewing’s co-founder and brewer Julian Pienaar, who passed away suddenly in January. Two versions of the same recipe were brewed simultaneously – one at Just Brewing and the other at Afro Caribbean Brewing Co in Cape Town. Order online from either brewery or pop in to buy while stocks last.
Woodstock’s Funky Monks named Best Beer in Africa
This is a little late in the day, but I’m finally finding time to report on the 2026 African Beer Cup, where Cape Town’s Woodstock Brewery took the title of Best Beer in Africa for their Funky Monk’s, a barrel-aged mixed-fermentation sour. The beer beat 243 others from 16 countries around the continent to take the top spot in Africa’s biggest beer competition in May. Soul Barrel’s Live Culture won the African Celebration Award, sponsored by the Beer Association of Africa, while Darling Brew took the top spot in the non-Alcoholic beer category. Dark Arts Beer launches in Pretoria and Cape Town
Well known brewer Jake Sandenbergh, head brewer at Afro Caribbean Brewing Company in Cape Town, has launched his own beer brand. Dark Arts Beer Project is a side project focusing on unique beers and once-off collabs with prominent SA brewers, with the majority of the beers brewed at Afro Caribbean. Dark Arts launched last month at Capital Craft Beer Academy in Pretoria, and later at Afro Caribbean Brewing Company in Cape Town, with a carefully curated beer and fermented food pairing. Tolokazi rolls out nationwide distribution following major investment in the brand
Tolokazi Beer has unveiled a major expansion plan, featuring a rebrand and national distribution of their Lager and Rooibos Berry Cider. Thanks to investment in the brand by Grindstone Ventures and the Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC), Tolokazi’s products are now being contract brewed at Darling Brew in the Western Cape and distributed through Gauteng, KZN and the Eastern and Western Capes.
Side Hustle opens taproom in Parktown North
Gauteng microbrewery Side Hustle has opened a delightful little taproom on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst, Johannesburg. The cosy bar serves Side Hustle’s beers as well as an impressive selection of boutique wines. Well worth a visit, the taproom doesn’t serve food but you can order pizzas from a nearby restaurant to be delivered to your table.

It’s been a while since I wrote anything on the blog. Life has been busy, what with BeerEx Africa, the African Beer Cup and kicking off research for a new edition of Beer Safari.
For those of you who are new(ish) to the South African Beer scene, the first edition of Beer Safari was released in 2015. The book documented more than 80 breweries across the country, telling their stories and listing their beers.
The beer scene has changed a lot in ten years – some breweries have closed, many more have opened. And I’m thrilled to be able to say that I have a contract to write a new edition of the book, this time covering breweries around the continent, not just South Africa.
Beer Safari: A guide to the craft breweries of Africa will be published in 2027 by Penguin Random House. I kicked off the research earlier this year, visiting the breweries of the Eastern Cape and Garden Route. But a book like this comes with considerable research costs – flights, accommodation, car rental, spending hundreds of rands on national highway tolls… And while the publisher covers the costs to produce, print, market and distribute the book, the research costs, including photography, fall to the author,

]]>It was with deep, deep sadness that South Africa’s beer industry learnt about the sudden passing of Julian Pienaar last week. Julian – or Jules to family and friends – was a much-loved figure who will be remembered for his perpetual smile, spectacular hugs and enduring willingness to help out a fellow brewer.

Julian and Wendy founded Just Brewing Co. in 2014, starting out as a distribution brewery based in Benoni. In 2018, the brewery expanded and moved to a new home in the Modderfontein Reserve under the name of At Hops End. Here the beers were served in the on-site restaurant or out in the beer garden. The brewery later moved once more to a small business park in Benoni. Jules took care of the day to day brewing between extensive travels for his day job with tech company Lenovo.
Julian and Wendy also founded Beer Boot Camp, a beer conference bringing big names in global beer to South Africa. The event kicked off in Johannesburg in 2015 with Jules acting as MC and general tech guru for the conference each year. He was also the MC for Africa Brew, an annual conference and get together held at rotating breweries around South Africa, and he helped us to run the AV side of things at BeerEx Africa and the African Beer Cup.
But what he will most be remembered for is his cheery demeanour and upbeat outlook on life. It’s difficult to imagine Jules without a smile on his face; almost impossible to picture him in a bad mood. When the tragic news reached the beer community last Friday, the tributes were thick and fast – and there was a common thread.
He was remembered for his joviality, his amazingly positive attitude, his big laugh and even bigger smile. And he was remembered for his generosity, whether that was dishing out beers to thirsty friends, or brewing advice to newbie brewers. With the authors’ permission I wanted to share a few of the condolence messages shared the day we learned of his passing:

“He was never too busy to make time for anyone. I was once tied up with admin at a beer tasting, and my wife was standing around, alone and awkward, not knowing who to talk to, until Julian took her under his wing and made her feel comfortable. That was the sort of person he was. Absolutely irreplaceable.” – Dimeon Van Rooyen, homebrewer.
“Jules was one of the kindest and most welcoming people I’ve met, never mind just in the beer world. No matter what was going on or how busy he was manning taps or sorting something out in the brewery, he always had time to chat. We’ve lost a truly great human” – Curtis Murray, homebrewer.
“Africa Brew will never be the same without him. He was our MC for forever – a legendary cat herder, brewer herder of note, and absolute force of joy. I have never seen Jules without a smile and that is how we will remember him and honour him.” – Elbie Louw, Binary Brew Worx and Africa Brew.
“Julian was one of the first people I met when I was just starting out as a home brewer. Always so open and willing to give advice and share feedback. Such an awesome human. We will miss him.” – Angelique Kieser, Darling Brew.
I had known Julian for about 12 years, first meeting the Pienaar family shortly after Just Brewing began. Over the years I have been lucky enough to spend a good deal of time with Wendy and Jules, always getting together when they visited Cape Town or when I headed up to Johannesburg. My heart is broken for Wendy, for son Kyle and daughter Courtney and I hope that knowing how loved he was will give some, albeit tiny, comfort.

Of all my fond memories of Jules, my fondest is our annual tradition of tailgate beers at the annual Intervarsity Brewing and Tasting Challenge. While the students gave top secret presentations that judges weren’t allowed to watch, we would sit out on the grass in the Bloemfontein sunshine, shooting the shit and sipping cold beers.
Jules always came equipped with a cooler box of Just Brewing Beers and I will always have the best memories of raucous belly laughter while swigging cans of Cray Cray IPA or my favourite, Pain Killer, a pina colada NEIPA. This year, I will be the one bringing the beers, and pouring one out for Jules in his absence.
Rest easy Jules. We will miss you immensely.

Ukrainian hops in Cape Town
One of my favourite things about the craft beer industry is its collaborative spirit. Brewers frequently put their heads together to launch creative, unique and sometimes just downright outlandish beers under a shared brand. They swap brewing tips and ingredients and knowledge, and regularly take inspiration from other industries – off the top of my head I can think of South African breweries that have collaborated with coffee roasters, bakers, musicians, artists, winemakers, surfboard shapers and restaurants to produce innovative new beers. And late last year I was lucky enough to be a part of a very cool international collab.
It began in June, with a WhatsApp from Ukrainian beer judge, writer, Certified Cicerone and friend, Lana Svitankova. Now based in Switzerland, Lana still works closely with Kiev’s Varvar Brew, and was in the process of setting up some global collaborations. “We have an idea of showcasing hops of the countries we are doing collabs with,” she wrote. “I am helping them to source hops from Japan and Brazil and sending Ukrainian hops over there, so it’s like two-way introduction to the cultures, focusing on countries people don’t usually suspect have a hop growing thing going on. So can we look at doing the same with South African hops?”
First sniff of Ukrainian hops!
And so, a few months later a colleague bound for Europe slipped 2kg of South African hops into her luggage and returned with a kilo of Zagrava and 500g of Zlato Polissya. The plan, to brew South Africa’s first Ukrainian Golden Ale (UGA). First brewed at Yuzivska Brewery in 2009, the UGA is an emerging style and one that Lana and her Ukrainian beer colleagues hope will make it into the BJCP guidelines at some point. Stronger, fuller bodied and sweeter than a British Golden Ale, it’s a well-balanced beer with a spicy, floral hop character, biscuit and caramel malt notes and sometimes a touch of spice either from a mildly phenolic yeast, or a gentle-handed addition of coriander.
Ukrainian hops aren’t essential for the style, but having a bag of hitherto unknown (locally) hops smuggled in someone’s suitcase really adds to the story of the beer. And if there’s one thing Charlie Murray loves (other than copious amounts of hops), it’s a beer with a good story. With his small-batch system and perpetual experimentation, Charlie was the perfect partner to work with on this once-off collab. A date was carefully chosen, and on 21 November – Ukraine’s Day of Dignity and Freedom – we mashed in on South Africa’s first Ukrainian Golden Ale. It’s important to mention at this point that this was not the first time the style has been commercially brewed in Africa. Rwanda’s Kweza Brewery released a distinctly local take on the UGA back in 2024, using malted sorghum alongside barley and adding the optional coriander seeds, but not the hard-to-find Ukrainian hops.

Charlie’s Zagrava Golden Ale hit the taps at his Noordhoek based brewpub on 3 January and was in grave danger of running out before I managed to taste any. Luckily I have a friend at the brewery who put a keg aside, so those of you who haven’t yet made it down there to taste will be pleased to know that there is one keg left and that cans are currently available (but don’t wait too long to go and grab some).
We tasted the beer together yesterday alongside Lana’s provisional BJCP description and felt it hit the spot, stylistically. First up, there’s a slightly sweet caramel note, then the hop bitterness (23 IBUs, from locally grown Southern Star hops) balances out the malty sweetness, making for great drinkability. The Zagrava lends an earthy note akin to ginseng and a touch of spice on the finish.
Meanwhile in Kiev, Varvar released the first in the range Lana is thinking of as the Friendship Series – a UGA brewed with a kilo of Southern Sublime and a kilo of Southern Passion hops that were muled to Germany, driven to Switzerland and then couriered to Ukraine. It’s the first in a series that will include the house Ukrainian Golden Ale – Varvar’s biggest selling style – brewed with hops from Japan, Brazil, the Czech Republic and the UK.
And what of that other bag of Ukrainian hops? Well if you don’t manage to get your hands on any of Charlie’s Zagrava Golden Ale before it runs out, you might be in luck, because the 500g of Zlato Polissya is destined to be used in a small-batch UGA at Woodstock Brewery, perhaps to be paired with a night of Ukrainian metal at their Brewer’s Punk Night. ]]>Voting is now closed with almost 800 people choosing their favourites in the 2025 Brewmistress South African Beer Awards – a record number of voters! In some categories it was a very tight race, with just a few votes separating the winner from the runners up. Just under 44 per cent of the votes came from the Western Cape – about right since around 40 per cent of South African breweries are in that province – but votes were cast from all nine provinces as well as Lesotho, Botswana, Rwanda, Malawi, Seychelles, Ghana, Kenya, the UK and the US.

1. Drifter Brewing Ocean Aged Tripel
Those of you who have been around in the industry for a while might well remember this beer. This third vintage of their 10% ABV Belgian Tripel aged for four years some 35 metres beneath the Atlantic Ocean off the Cape Town coast. Bottles come adorned with limpets and barnacles and the beer is beautifully packaged in the kind of innovative way that you’d expect from Drifter (but I don’t want to ruin the surprise). The beer has proved a hit with collectors around the world, and there are only a dozen bottles available in South Africa. It’s pricey, but makes a truly special gift.

2. Soul Barrel x Afro Caribbean The Never Ending Boil
This yet-to-be-released collab is a truly experimental beer and will be released in very small quantities. The 17.5% barley wine-style beer underwent an extensive boil – around 20 hours over six days – to create a rich, dark, complex beer that’s ideal for post-Christmas lunch sipping.
Where: The beer will launch later this month – get it via Soul Barrel or Afro Caribbean’s online stores.

3. Just Brewing Christmas Beer Box
Just Brewing has released a limited-edition Christmas Beer Box, available for purchase until 22 December. The curated 12-pack features specially labelled festive editions of six popular products from the brewery. You’ll get two 440ml cans each of Painkiller, SMASH It!, 1645 Lager, Wild Berry Cider, Herculean Hop Strike and Veloci-NEIPA.

4. The Beer That Stole Christmas
Another seriously limited edition beer, this collab between Afro Caribbean and Capital Craft is designed to take pride of place on your festive lunch or diner table. The idea was to create a beer so magnificent it steals wine’s limelight as you carve your roast beast. A Belgian Quad aged on sour cherries and lightly spiced with cardamom, it’s a big but beautifully balanced beer to enjoy with your mince pies or after dinner cheese board. Dsigned to age, only 100 750ml bottles will be released this year, with the rest launching for Christmas 2026 and 27.

5. Charlie’s Garage 12 Beers of Christmas

7. Tickets to Fools & Fans Beer Festival

]]>It’s been a tricky few years for craft beer in South Africa. There have been multiple closures of breweries, bars and even festivals. Finding shelf space is tricky and making money more so. And yet, the quality of beer, and the innovation in craft beer just keep on getting better and better. So it’s time to celebrate that with the (sort of) annual Brewmistress South African Beer Awards!
This year, voting will take place in two stages. Round One is for your nominations in each category. You can nominate one person/business per category. Voting in Round One remains open until Friday 28 November. A shortlist will then be published where you can vote to determine who is the best in beer for this year.

]]>Rugby and beer – it is a pairing that no-one can argue with, so I have quickly rounded up a quartet of local beers to seek out and sip while you watch the fourth round of the Rugby Championship this weekend.
Take your pick, from an old classic, a brand new beer designed just to drink with the rugby, a brand that’s all about the sport, and a seasonal release that offers a perfectly-timed play on a spring beer style.
