My latest book, The Bluegrass Devils of Detroit, is now available on Amazon.  I’ll have more to say about it here shortly, but for now I’d just like to share the review it received from IndieReader.

Title: THE BLUEGRASS DEVILS OF DETROIT

Author: Chuck Snearly

Genre: Mystery/Suspense/Thriller

Rating: 4.5 stars (out of 5)

A reticent Michigan history professor joins a PI in search of answers about a decades-old cold case that may lead to valuable treasure.

When history professor Andrew Pickens is approached by a private detective after a lecture on the Detroit mafia, he refuses the call to adventure. Investigating the 1933 disappearance of a man who vanished after being the last person to see his friend killed by a white supremacist militia member is just too dangerous, as evidenced by the fact that the PI, Murphy, is nursing a gunshot wound. But Pickens’s love for his city’s rich history of crime lures him into Murphy’s world, where he and his client (grandson of the long-missing victim, law professor Baxter Fineman) contend with digging into archives, being followed into graveyards at night, and scarcely avoiding shootouts with a violent cultish gang called the Black Legion. Traveling from Hell to Paradise (both real towns in the state of Michigan), Pickens, Murphy, and Fineman team up to solve the decades-old cold case—and search for Fineman’s grandfather’s supposed buried treasure—in Chuck Snearly’s entertaining mystery novel THE BLUEGRASS DEVILS OF DETROIT.

Pickens’s repeated refusal to help Murphy and Fineman becomes the book’s running gag, as he continues to help them despite his reservations. Humor that plays with the reader’s expectations is common throughout the book, as when Murphy tries to distract Pickens with pun-filled jokes to disarm him from his anxiety when he’s trapped in a well—instead of simply hurrying to pull him out. Most of the humor works well, but the jokes sometimes fall flat when they feel self-serving, as when Pickens’s students laugh at his attempts at humor during a lecture while readers may not be laughing.

The book’s humor is a jolly balance to its thrilling tension, which comes in the form of both high-stakes violence and slow-burn suspense. Murphy delaying his rescue of Pickens from the well, for instance, is made all the more suspenseful with the knowledge that an aggressive antagonist is moments away from arriving on the scene, armed and dangerous. It’s a race to find invaluable hidden treasure: fanatic Black Legion members versus the team of PI and professors. The novel’s quick pace ups suspense; even during long drives from Detroit to Michigan’s upper peninsula, peeks into the antagonists’ perspective and character banter keep tensions high. Pickens relays information on Detroit’s criminal history to Murphy and Fineman as needed, which offers context for Fineman’s grandfather’s disappearance and the white supremacist Black Legion’s activities. It also helps round out the book’s setting.

Also maintaining the book’s suspense are the likable, realistic characters. When the trio finds letters that Fineman’s grandfather wrote to his pregnant wife, they emphasize how important it is that Fineman, Murphy, and Pickens find the treasure before the Black Legion does. It’s not just potentially valuable, but it’s also sentimental. Sharp descriptions bring characters to life, as when “Murphy was seated in his favorite spot in the Old Miami lounge, an ancient overstuffed chair as stained and smelly as he was.” As the book’s primary point-of-view character, Pickens is the most likable and fully dimensional. He is not only reticent to join the dangerous investigation at first, but he is also hesitant to pursue a love life post-divorce and sign up his casual yet talented garage band for local gigs. Over the course of the novel, though, he learns an important lesson: that “if you fought against evil you might lose, but if you didn’t fight you definitely would lose.”

IR Verdict: Humorous and thrilling in turn, THE BLUEGRASS DEVILS OF DETROIT by Chuck Snearly is a high-stakes mystery thriller with a likable everyman protagonist and local Michigan flavor.

Nice article about my writing career and latest novel in the Wayne State University School of Communications newsletter.
Thanks, Wayne! Go Warriors!

Word Warrior Turns to Crime To Write the Last Chapter of a Successful Career

January 5, 2023

Chuck Snearly (WSU BA ’76)

A writing career that began nearly 50 years ago as a South End reporter is still going strong for Chuck Snearly (’76).

“I had a great time writing for the student newspaper and it led to a 40 plus years career as a journalist, communications consultant and speechwriter,” says Snearly. “Now I’m returning to the scene of the crime, so to speak, writing mysteries that are set on the Wayne State campus.”

After an internship at the Detroit News, Snearly worked as reporter for several newspapers before joining Ford Motor Company. He worked in public relations at Ford for 30 years, including 14 years as Chief Speechwriter, writing more than 1,000 speeches for senior executives.

“The highlight of my time at Ford was writing speeches for Executive Chairman Bill Ford,” says Snearly. “Helping him articulate his ‘Better World’ vision of corporate social and environmental responsibility was a privilege and a pleasure.”

In 2007 Snearly formed his own communications consulting company, Speech Right, Inc. Over the years he has won numerous awards writing speeches, annual reports, web content, video scripts, press releases, brochures, ad copy and more. In 2010 he added a non-fiction book, Speech Right, to his list of achievements.

“Speech Right is a how-to book for writing speeches,” says Snearly. “It’s for speechwriters with any level of experience, from first timer to experienced professional, but it’s gotten a lot of use as a college textbook.”

In 2015 Snearly turned to crime to write his first novel, The Guardian of Detritus.

“Growing up I loved reading Sherlock Holmes stories, and later on I became a huge Elmore Leonard fan,” Snearly says. “When I decided to write a novel I knew it would include crime and mystery, and I knew it would be set in Detroit. As it turns out, a lot of the action happens in and around Wayne State.”

Snearly’s second crime novel, Far Out Man, was published in May. It also is centered on Wayne State.

“The main character in Far Out Man is a Wayne professor who specializes in literature from the 1960s,” Snearly says. “He loses his job and dies, then things really get bad for him.”

Far Out Man has received excellent reviews, with Indie Reader calling it “brilliant fiction” and Kirkus Reviews declaring it “A highly entertaining mystery powered by exceptional character development.” Snearly is pleased with the response to his latest novel but not ready to quit his day job just yet.

“I like to tell people I’m making a career transition from successful speechwriter to struggling novelist,” he says. “It’s been a wonderful writing life so far, I think becoming an author would be a great way to finish it.”

I think we all can agree that deceptive click-bait headlines are the worst. But hang in there with me as I try to make this one work.

You will not be surprised to learn that my novel Far Out Man has not won a Nobel Prize – yet. However, three scientists working on a phenomenon that plays a major role in my novel have won it. Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger will share a Nobel Prize for their work involving quantum entanglement, which was dubbed “spooky action at a distance” by Albert Einstein. Quantum entanglement, in a nutshell, means that the properties of one particle can be deduced by examining the properties of a second particle – even if they are separated by a large distance. These three proved that one theory of how quantum entanglement works – hidden variables – was wrong. Don’t ask me to explain any more than that, because even the smartest people in the world don’t understand this stuff. You can even win a Nobel Prize for figuring out what it’s not.

My shaky excuse for the click-bait headline is that my novel and their work are like entangled particles, affecting each other from a great distance apart with no apparent connections. I’ll admit it’s not much, but it’s all I’ve got.

Congratulations Messrs. Aspect, Clauser and Zeilinger!

My friend and colleague John Baldoni was kind enough to invite onto his LinkedIn LIVE interview show GRACE Under Pressure. John is a world-renowned executive coach and leadership expert. We talked about the critical role effective communication plays in successful leadership and what I have learned after more than 30 years as a speechwriter. I also got to talk about my latest novel, Far Out Man.

John teaches leaders to use GRACE as a catalyst for positive change, turning it into an acronym:

Generosity, the will to do something for others
Respect, the dignity of life and work
Action, the mechanism for change
Compassion, the concern for others
Energy, the spirt that catalyzes people

When John asked me for an example of GRACE in my life, I immediately thought of my most famous speechwriting client, Bill Ford. Bill has worked for decades to make Ford Motor Company economically, environmentally and socially sustainable – a company that not only offers great products and services but helps build a better world. With the company’s strong and successful move into electric vehicles Bill’s long-held vision is becoming a reality.

Writing fiction is a difficult and lonely task, with lots of disappointment and rejection. But every now and then something happens that makes it all worthwhile, and one of those wonderful things happened to me today: Indie Reader published a fantastic review of my novel Far Out Man.

I love the review not just because it says nice things about Far Out Man, but because it really understands what I was trying to do and say in the novel. Having someone like it is great, having someone get it is incredibly moving and gratifying. When you combine the two it’s a beautiful thing, the reason why I sat on my ass typing for all those years. Thanks IndieReader!

Here’s a short excerpt from the review, I’ll paste a link to the full piece below it. Be sure to check it out!
“A brilliant piece of fiction… Vonnegut fans will immediately appreciate Snearly’s wide-eyed protagonist and the increasingly surreal narrative that unfolds.”

The phrase “Third time’s the charm” has its roots in the age-old assumption that the third time you try something will be the lucky effort that succeeds. This assumption is based on the similarity that things that come in threes have to the Holy Trinity of Christianity. A more agnostic explanation is that after failing two times you have the experience to succeed on your third try. I’m hoping either one or both of those things are true as I prepare to launch my third self-published novel, Far Out Man. Despite its main character’s obsession with the Sixties, Far Out Man is a story whose time has come. In a cynical age of fear, hate and war, maybe it’s time to reexamine the value of peace, love and understanding. And maybe the third time will be the charm for me.

In December I offered a free e-book version of my novel The Guardian of Detritus, as well as a one dollar donation for every free copy downloaded to One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization that plants a tree for every dollar they receive. That promotion was a mixed success – many Likes and Shares for the ad, lots of great comments, but very few downloads. In the meantime, a growing crisis in Australia put this minor setback into perspective – raging bushfires destroyed millions of acres and thousands of homes, killing dozens of people and a billion animals.

At this point a book promotion seems like a frivolous pursuit, but it’s the best way I have of helping out, so I am continuing it in a different way. I have donated $500 to plant 500 trees in Australia, where they are badly needed. That’s a lot more than the number of free books that were downloaded in December, but the situation – and my priorities – have changed. My book promotion has morphed into a fundraiser. Going forward, I will donate all the proceeds for every purchase of The Guardian of Detritus from Amazon to One Tree Planted. My goal is to donate an additional $2,020 to plant 2,020 trees in Australia in 2020.
