Latanya Hill where our tower stands.
Anyone who works with rural community networks knows the reality: keeping equipment alive on top of a hill during thunderstorm season is tough. For years, our relay site on Latanya Hill has served as the backbone of BOSCO Uganda’s network, beaming connectivity across remote parts of the region. But when harsh weather and repeated lightning strikes took a toll on the hardware, the link suffered—and so did the community that rely on it every day.
Thanks to direct grant support and partnership from Internet Society Foundation (ISOC), our technical team was able to head back up Latanya Hill, repair the damage, and give the entire site the overhaul it desperately needed.
What We Fixed on the Ground
Getting Latanya back to full strength meant addressing both the off-grid power supply and the extreme weather conditions that batter the hilltop year-round:
Solar & Battery Overhaul: Installed high-capacity solar panels and reliable battery storage, ensuring the site stays online through prolonged, overcast rainy spells.
Heavy-Duty Lightning & Grounding: Replaced damaged surge protectors and rebuilt the earthing system to shield the mast and sensitive radios from severe strikes.
Modernized Wireless Links: Upgraded long-range transceivers to higher-capacity radios, dramatically cutting latency and expanding data throughput.
Reinforced Enclosures: Renforced outdoor gear boxes to protect critical equipment from tamper, dust, and heat.

Why Latanya Hill Matters
Latanya isn’t just a tower on a hill; it’s a lifeline for places where commercial telecom networks don’t reach or remain prohibitively expensive.
With the site upgraded, schools and local community members don’t have to travel miles into town just to access basic digital services.

Studying at Gulu University gave me the technical foundation, but interning with BOSCO Uganda put me out in the field where real network infrastructure operates. Working alongside field engineers, I helped maintain power systems, troubleshoot site outages, and protect internet connectivity for rural communities across Northern Uganda.
Preventing Power Failure at Radio Maria
During a routine inspection at BOSCO Uganda’s main hub for Radio Maria, Team Lead Solomon Okori and I caught a site failure in progress. The solar inverter was constantly beeping, signaling that the battery bank was dangerously close to shutting down completely. A total shutdown would have dropped internet access across the entire site.
To avoid a sudden outage, we rerouted the networking gear directly to a backup power source. This kept the connection online while giving the main solar rig room to safely recharge the batteries—a quick operational call that saved the site from going dark.

Restoring Tower Connectivity on Opit Hill
When an outage hit our Opit Hill tower site, I headed out with Mr. Mwaka Emmanuel Venish to locate the problem. We traced the total connection loss back to a faulty network switch on site.
We restored the link step-by-step:
Replaced damaged hardware: Pulled the dead switch out of the rack and mounted a fresh unit.
Configured network settings: Set up the replacement switch with the correct VLANs and IP parameters.
Ran link verification: Executed end-to-end ping tests to confirm strong communication between the Opit tower, Radio Maria tower, and neighboring microwave links.
Takeaway from the Field: Building networks in remote areas is only half the job. Keeping them reliable depends entirely on rapid field diagnostics and solid preventive checks.
Key Practical Skills Gained
Diagnosing and resolving remote microwave link drops and hardware failures.
Configuring network switches, setting up IP routing, and running line tests.
Managing off-grid solar power systems and managing battery load during low-power situations.
Working safely and efficiently on active tower sites.
My time at BOSCO Uganda bridged the gap between classroom theory and heavy-duty field engineering. I’m returning to Gulu University with practical technical experience and a much clearer understanding of how to build resilient communication systems for the communities that rely on them most.

Hands-On ICT & Solar Power: My Field Internship at BOSCO Uganda

Studying computer networking and system administration at Gulu University gave me the baseline theory, but joining BOSCO Uganda as a technical support intern put that theory directly into the field. Over the internship, I spent my days troubleshooting network outages, building out solar rigs, and keeping infrastructure alive across rural communities.

Troubleshooting Network Connections at Radio Pacis
On July 9, 2026, I headed out with the tech team to fix a connection drop at the Radio Pacis transmission site at Minor Seminary Lacor. We needed to verify and restore the link tying the station back to BOSCO Uganda’s core backbone.
We checked the physical hardware, tested gateway connectivity, ran signal diagnostics, and brought the wireless link back up to standard specs. Keeping this hub running was critical—it handles data traffic for surrounding sites like St. John Paul II College Laliya and Lacor Primary School.
Field Lesson: Remote tech only works when the power and backbone hold up. A network configuration is only as reliable as the solar panel powering the radio link.
Fixing an Off-Grid Solar Lab at Lacor Primary School
That same afternoon, we got a call that Lacor Primary School’s computer lab had gone completely dark right after a heavy rainstorm. We headed over to run diagnostics on their off-grid system:
Checked panel output: We put a digital multimeter directly on the solar array and confirmed the panels were putting out full voltage.
Traced the lines: Following the wiring down to the battery bank revealed zero charging current reaching the cells.
Pinpointed the failure: The issue was an internal hardware failure in the charge controller due to wear and age.
We swapped out the broken controller for a fresh unit, programmed the charge profiles to match the battery bank, and brought power back to the lab so students could get back to class.
Everyday Solar Setup and Maintenance
Because these sites operate entirely off-grid, solid solar setup is essential. My regular work involved:
Wiring solar panels in series or parallel to hit exact system voltage targets.
Reading voltage, checking cable continuity, and wiring battery banks in series while verifying correct polarity.
Hooking up charge controllers and power inverters inside equipment cabinets.
Diagnosing network link drops using tools like ping tests and gateway verification.
Configuring and installing complete solar PV setups (panels, battery banks, controllers, inverters).
Conducting regular preventive checks on remote power systems and networking hardware.
Writing up clean fault reports and maintenance documentation.
Getting Lacor Primary back online showed me firsthand that real field work isn’t just about reading network charts—it’s about keeping power flowing where the grid doesn’t reach. I’m taking these skills back to Gulu University with a much sharper understanding of how to build and maintain community networks that actually last.

Today, we are thrilled to feature Kisaakye Rebecca, one of our technical interns, who recently took her computer science skills out of the classroom and straight into the field.
Before joining our field operations, much of Rebecca’s technical training was rooted in theory and software simulations. She was eager to gain hands-on experience, learn practical network troubleshooting, and see how clean energy and technology directly impact rural communities. Here is a look at her fieldwork experience in Omoro District and Opit.
Field Mission 1: Solar Power & Network Troubleshooting in Omoro
Rebecca’s very first trip took her to Atyang Primary School in Omoro District to troubleshoot a failing solar power system.
Upon inspecting the installation, Rebecca and the team discovered a loose cable connecting the inverter to the batteries. That single faulty connection had cut off power to critical equipment, including the lights, a MikroTik AP, and a PowerBeam M5 400. Once the connection was secured, power was fully restored to the site.
Fixing the solar system was only part of the work, though. Rebecca also took on several computer maintenance tasks:
Updated outdated Windows operating systems on the school’s laptops.
Activated Microsoft Office licenses across three HP laptops.
Installed MS Office and updated antivirus software on an additional desktop.
To wrap up the visit, the team tackled the internet connection at the ICT center. The local Access Point was not serving internet, and the PowerBeam M5 400 at Atyang wasn’t linking properly with the station at Moro Hill in Opit. Rebooting the device restored local communication, but because internet flow remained blocked, Rebecca noted that the LAN cable from the station needed further work.
Field Mission 2: Scaling Moro Hill in Opit
Her second assignment took her to Opit, where BOSCO Uganda operates one of its primary tower sites. Reaching the equipment meant hiking up a steep hill, a tough physical challenge for someone not used to high climbs, but great exercise nonetheless!
Once at the top, Rebecca noticed the inverter making an unusual noise, indicating low power input. The team realized a previous crew had left the solar panel cables unplugged from the batteries. After reconnecting the cables and restoring steady power, Rebecca helped run ping tests across the network devices to confirm full connectivity.
Teamwork, Resilience, and Community Impact
Throughout her field trips, Rebecca experienced firsthand the power of teamwork. Working alongside supportive colleagues who took the time to explain technical details helped her build both confidence and sharp diagnostic skills.
Even when things didn’t go as planned, Rebecca treated every technical glitch not as a roadblock, but as an opportunity to grow as a problem solver.
Looking back on her fieldwork, Rebecca reflected that being a computer scientist isn’t just about configuring routers or writing code it’s about using technology to keep communities connected to information, opportunity, and one another.
We are incredibly proud of Rebecca’s growth, hard work, and positive attitude during her time with BOSCO Uganda, and we look forward to seeing the great things she will accomplish in her career!

Organization: Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach (BOSCO) Uganda Date: July 2026
My internship at Battery Operated Systems for Community Outreach (BOSCO) Uganda was a transformative learning experience that bridged the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world practice. Working alongside experienced technical engineers, I participated in field assignments across Northern Uganda, where I gained practical skills in computer networking, renewable energy systems, and technical support. Every assignment contributed to BOSCO Uganda’s mission of providing reliable communication and internet connectivity to underserved communities.
Network Troubleshooting and Restoration
One of my primary responsibilities during the internship was assisting in diagnosing and restoring network services during system failures. These field experiences strengthened my technical skills in fault identification, network diagnostics, equipment maintenance, and teamwork.
Radio Maria Gulu Sub-Station
On 23rd June 2026, I participated in resolving an internet outage at the Radio Maria Gulu Sub-Station. Although the problem was initially suspected to be a fibre-optic cable failure, systematic troubleshooting revealed that the actual cause was an offline Access Point (AP). Using network diagnostic techniques, we verified gateway configurations, executed ping tests, identified the fault, restored communication between devices, and successfully re-established internet connectivity. This experience emphasized the importance of logical troubleshooting before replacing equipment or assuming external causes.
Opit Towers, Moro Hill
On 25th June 2026, I joined a technical team responding to a major network outage at Opit Towers in Omoro District following heavy rainfall. The outage affected communication services in Opit and neighboring areas, including Ngeta and Rackoko Towers.
Our inspection revealed multiple faults, including Error Code 03 on the backup power system, excessive battery voltage preventing the inverter from supplying power, faulty electrical cables, and a damaged MikroTik switch. Using a multimeter, we measured voltage levels, verified electrical continuity, inspected the power system, and assisted in replacing the faulty components. After completing repairs and conducting system tests, network services were successfully restored.
These assignments significantly enhanced my practical understanding of network troubleshooting, power system maintenance, preventive maintenance, equipment inspection, and fault restoration.
Renewable Energy and Power Systems
Reliable communication in remote communities depends heavily on renewable energy. During my internship, I actively participated in the installation and maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that power communication towers.
Working with solar panels, solar batteries, a multifunctional inverter, connecting cables, and a multimeter, I assisted in assembling and testing solar power systems. The installation process involved connecting two solar panels in both series and parallel configurations, measuring output voltage, connecting batteries in series, verifying correct polarity and cable continuity, and integrating both the solar panels and battery bank with the charge controller and inverter.
I also supported preventive maintenance activities, including cleaning battery enclosures, repairing damaged wiring, reconnecting electrical cables, and ensuring safe installation procedures. These experiences strengthened my understanding of renewable energy systems, battery management, electrical measurements, and the critical role of reliable power in sustaining communication infrastructure.
Skills and Professional Growth
Throughout my internship, I developed valuable technical and professional competencies, including:
Network troubleshooting and restoration.
Computer networking.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) system installation and maintenance.
Inverter, and charge controller configuration.
Electrical testing using a digital multimeter.
Equipment inspection and preventive maintenance.
Technical documentation and fault reporting.
Teamwork, communication, and workplace professionalism.
Adherence to electrical and occupational safety procedures.
Beyond technical skills, I learned the importance of effective communication, proper planning, teamwork, and maintaining spare equipment to minimize service downtime during emergencies.
Conclusion
My internship at BOSCO Uganda was an enriching and rewarding experience that greatly enhanced my technical knowledge and practical skills. It provided me with the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to real-world challenges while contributing to the restoration and maintenance of communication services that support education, healthcare, businesses, and communities.
The experience strengthened my confidence in network troubleshooting, renewable energy systems, and technical support, while reinforcing the value of teamwork, professionalism, and continuous learning. It has prepared me for future opportunities in Information and Communication Technology and inspired me to pursue innovative solutions that improve connectivity and community development.

BOSCO Uganda joined education leaders, researchers, policymakers and civil society organisations from six countries at the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Women in STEM (WiSE) International Workshop held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 23–26 June 2026. The workshop brought together participants from Brunei, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, The Gambia and Uganda to exchange research, practical experiences and innovative approaches for increasing women’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
For BOSCO Uganda, the workshop was more than an opportunity to participate in international discussions. It was a chance to share how community-based digital inclusion can create pathways for women and girls who are often left behind by conventional education systems.
One of the strongest messages throughout the workshop was that efforts to increase women’s participation in STEM should not stop at universities.
The workshop highlighted the importance of creating opportunities across multiple learning pathways, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), community-based learning and other non-formal education programmes. These approaches recognise that many women and girls develop valuable technical skills outside traditional higher education institutions.
This broader perspective closely reflects BOSCO Uganda’s approach of using technology to reach underserved communities and create practical learning opportunities where they are needed most.

Learning from Different Country Experience
The workshop provided a valuable platform for countries to share research and experiences while identifying challenges that continue to affect women in STEM across different regions.
Research presented from Malaysia showed encouraging progress in education, with 54% of STEM graduates being women, significantly higher than the current global average of 33%. However, participants also learned that higher enrolment does not automatically translate into equal participation in the workforce.
Discussions highlighted challenges such as hiring practices, workplace policies, caring responsibilities and limited retention strategies, which continue to reduce women’s representation in STEM careers. These issues resonated across participating countries, demonstrating that improving access to education is only one part of the solution.
The research also explored why many young women choose STEM fields. Family encouragement, positive role models, aspirations for economic independence and a genuine interest in science and problem-solving were identified as key motivating factors. At the same time, participants recognised that comparatively less attention has been given to retaining women once they enter STEM professions, making workplace retention a shared policy challenge.

Sharing BOSCO Uganda’s Community Experience
Among the pilot initiatives presented during the workshop, BOSCO Uganda shared findings from its Scoping Study for a Pilot Programme on Sustainable, Women-led Community Networks in Lira and Dokolo Districts in Northern Uganda.
The study explored what digital access for education and training means to marginalised communities and examined how women perceive the opportunities, benefits and barriers associated with digital technologies. It also assessed community readiness for digital learning, existing digital skills, internet access and the feasibility of training young women as community network operators.
The presentation generated discussions on the importance of designing digital learning programmes that respond to local realities and build on existing community strengths. It also demonstrated how community networks can support learning opportunities for young women who are not in education, employment or training.
BOSCO Uganda’s experience complemented presentations from IT for Change in India and Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) in Pakistan, highlighting how community-driven approaches can contribute to expanding women’s participation in STEM across different contexts.

Learning from Community-Based Solutions
The workshop showcased a range of practical initiatives designed to support women and girls throughout their learning journeys.
Participants learned about The Gambia’s Mentorship, Guidance and Counselling Toolkit, which strengthens mentoring support for girls pursuing STEM education, as well as initiatives that promote STEM teacher development and community-based digital learning.
Panel discussions featuring women leaders, gender experts and advocates provided further insight into the challenges women continue to face in leadership and STEM careers. Their experiences reinforced the importance of mentorship, supportive policies, inclusive workplaces and sustained investment in women’s leadership.
From Dialogue to Action
Beyond sharing experiences, the workshop focused on practical collaboration. Participating organisations worked individually and collectively with the Commonwealth of Learning to identify actions that could strengthen women’s participation in STEM through community programmes, TVET institutions and universities. These planning sessions encouraged organisations to build on their existing strengths while identifying opportunities for future collaboration.
One of the workshop’s most significant outcomes was the establishment of a Community of Practice, which will provide an ongoing platform for participating organisations to continue exchanging knowledge, sharing experiences, developing joint initiatives and supporting one another’s work on women in STEM.
A Shared Commitment to the Future
The workshop was officially opened by Professor Mohamed Erfy Ismail from Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education, who highlighted national initiatives that support women’s participation in STEM, including university-industry engagement programmes, STEM Connect initiatives and research grant schemes focused on women in STEM.
The workshop concluded with remarks from Prof Dr Zainal Amin bin Ayub the Deputy Director General of Higher Education, Malaysia, who reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing women in STEM. He announced that funding has been set aside to support research in this area and expressed the Ministry’s willingness to collaborate with workshop partners on future initiatives. He also acknowledged that important gender gaps remain, noting that only two of Malaysia’s twenty public universities are currently led by women.
Looking Ahead
For BOSCO Uganda, participation in the Women in STEM International Workshop reinforced an important lesson that increasing women’s participation in STEM begins long before university and continues well beyond graduation.
It requires communities that encourage girls to pursue science and technology, practical digital skills that create real opportunities, and partnerships that support women throughout their education and careers.
The workshop also reaffirmed that community-based approaches have an important place within the global STEM agenda. As BOSCO Uganda continues to expand digital inclusion and community network initiatives across Northern Uganda, the knowledge gained, partnerships established and experiences shared during the workshop will help strengthen programmes that create meaningful opportunities for women and girls
Through the newly established Community of Practice, BOSCO Uganda looks forward to continuing to learn from and collaborate with partners across Asia and Africa to advance inclusive, community-driven approaches that enable more women and girls to participate, lead and thrive in STEM.

]]>BOSCO Uganda is delighted to welcome a new cohort of interns who have officially begun their placement across various departments within the organization. A total of seven interns have joined the team, with six assigned to the Technical Department and one to the Finance Department.
The interns come from diverse academic backgrounds, including five from Gulu University, one from Kampala University, and one from the East Africa Institute of Management Science. They bring with them fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a strong passion for learning and professional growth.
A Strong Start Since joining, the interns have adjusted well and shown great enthusiasm in their work. They are working closely with team members, taking part in daily activities.
Current Engagements The interns are supporting BOSCO Uganda’s work in several areas, including:

ISOC Foundation Team Visits Bosco Uganda: A Journey of Partnership, Progress, Resilience and Community Impact
The ISOC Foundation team Luciana, John, and Shafik recently concluded a highly productive and inspiring visit to Bosco Uganda. The trip strengthened existing partnerships, provided valuable insights into ongoing projects, and highlighted the tangible difference being made in local communities across northern Uganda.
The visit began with a warm welcome at the Bosco Bardege office, where the team met with key Bosco Uganda staff to review strategic priorities and discuss collaborative opportunities. This initial engagement set a collaborative tone for the days ahead, allowing for open dialogue on shared goals in digital inclusion, resilience building, and community empowerment. Throughout the tour, the ISOC Foundation representatives had the opportunity to meet directly with Bosco Uganda staff, inspect critical infrastructure developments, and engage meaningfully with project beneficiaries. Highlights included a detailed review of the power upgrades implemented under the Resilience Project and an assessment of the fully restored Rackoko tower. These upgrades are already delivering improved connectivity and reliable services to previously underserved areas, demonstrating the real-world impact of the partnership.

To ensure we stay at the cutting edge of renewable energy technology, two of our technical staff recently attended an intensive training session hosted byDavis & Shirtliff, a leader in water and energy solutions.
The training was a deep dive into the modern solar landscape, moving beyond the basics to master the high efficiency systems that are defining the industry today.

More Than Just Panels: A broad Look at Solar Solutions
While many view solar primarily through the lens of lighting, the training covered the vast versatility of solar-powered machinery. Our team explored:
Solar Water Pumping: Robust solutions for irrigation and community water supply.
Solar Water Heaters: Efficient thermal systems for domestic and institutional use.
Solar Compressors: Utilizing the sun’s power for industrial applications.
The Main Event: Lithium-Ion & MPPT Technology
The highlight of the session was the shift toward Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries and MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) inverters.
As the market moves away from traditional Lead Acid batteries, our team learned why Lithium is the new standard:
Longer Lifespan: Lithium batteries can last up to 10 years, compared to 2–3 years for traditional alternatives.
Faster Charging: They handle high current better, reaching full capacity much quicker.
Depth of Discharge: You can use nearly 100% of a Lithium battery’s energy without damaging it giving you more reliability.
Complementing this is the MPPT Inverter. Unlike older PWM controllers, MPPT technology acts like an intelligent gearbox, constantly adjusting to extract the maximum possible power from the panels, even in cloudy weather.

Precision Planning: Sizing and Best Practices
A solar system is only as good as its design. The Davis & Shirtliff experts walked our team through the critical steps of Solar Sizing and Planning.
1. The Load Audit: Everything starts with the electronics. We practiced calculating total “Watt-hours” by looking at what devices are being used (LED lights vs. computers) and exactly how many hours they run.
2. Good Practices: Our team reviewed installation standards from the tilt angle of the panels to ensure maximum sun exposure, to the importance of high quality cabling to prevent energy loss.
3. Future Proofing: Planning for growth so that a community’s energy needs can expand without needing a total system overhaul.

]]>Northern Uganda – Community technicians from BOSCO Uganda ICT sites took on their fear of heights today during the practical day of Working at Height safety training. Led by Ambiosh HSE Consults Ltd experts, they climbed real towers step by step with full safety gear.
Hands On Gear and Climbs
Technicians first put on complete personal protective equipment (PPE): harnesses, helmets, gloves, foot ascenders to move up safely, lanyards and carabiners to stay attached to the tower, descenders to come down, and self-retracting lifelines that lock if you fall. They checked all gear carefully before climbing.
On the towers, they practiced good positioning up high, clipping into several points for extra safety, and smooth ways to descend. Each one climbed with support from the trainers, building confidence one rung at a time.
Rescue Drills in Action
Teams also ran rescue practices using ropes, ascenders, and descenders to lower and help a teammate who “fell.” They called out clear instructions and worked as a group—key skills for real emergencies during network fixes or solar work.
Why This Training Matters
Northern Uganda’s steep hills, strong winds, and wet ladders make tower work risky for ICT maintenance. Yesterday’s theory lessons on risks, rules, and duties gave the base. Today’s climbs turned worry into skill, so technicians from sites like Pabbo, Pagak, and others can handle jobs safely.
