I attended the second annual Taste Talks LA, an up-and-coming foodie festival, filled with chefs, restaurant owners, and food lovers. In addition to the delectable treats, ,there were simultaneous panel stages that covered everything from restaurant life, culture, and food in LA to demos of meat, pasta, and cereal. Yes, cereal.

Seriously, any event that starts with cherry brewed Nespresso coffee and tie-dye donuts from Donut Princess, and includes an all-star cookout with treats from ten different restaurants, is aces in my book.

For the All-Star Cookout, I started out with Kato Restaurant’s “Surf n’ Turf” Smoked Pork and Pickled Shrimp, bone kettle’s Garlic Herb-Crusted Lamb Loin, Cento Pasta Bar’s Sweet Corn Polenta, WOOD’s Wood-Fired Meatballs, and Neighbor’s Sichuan Cauliflower. I stopped to take a picture before devouring each delicacy.

MexiKosher’s Watermelon and Chile Tostada came next, followed by Delicious Pizza’s Delicious mini-slices, Secret Lasagna’s Moo Ping Tacos with Jaew salsa, and Broken Shaker’s Grilled Sweet Potato with Chile and Almond Milk.

I wrapped up my “meal” with fruity Superfood Pops from Dream Pops.

These bites were perfect for a hot and sunny Southern California day. And the attendees, myself included, all seemed happy to be there. The fest was friendly and cozy, a very impressive second-year effort. Can’t wait to see how Taste Talk LA  develops.

What should I do?

Dear Girlfriend,

Sounds like you’re dealing with a real sports NUT.

Easy PeaNUT Butter Cookies

1 eggsports nut peanut butter cookies
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
8 oz peanut butter (I recommend crunchy)
about 1/3 cup brown sugar Use 1/2 cup if you want sweeter cookies.
1 tsp baking powder
chocolate chips (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix egg and vanilla in a small bowl. Set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine peanut butter, brown sugar, and baking soda. Add in egg and vanilla mixture. Stir until all ingredients are combined. Fold in chocolate chips, if desired.

Place in small balls on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a fork, add criss crosses as you flatten cookies.

Bake about 12 minutes: 11 minutes for chewier and 13 for crunchier cookies.

Cook on baking sheet and enjoy!

Tell him that while you can appreciate his love of sports, you would like to have some of his undivided attention. Set up specific sports-free dates.
When you have the quality time together that you crave, you won’t mind the sports as much.

I’m a 29-year-old man, who works in the family business with my mother, father, and brother.

We spend every day together and usually have lunch, where our talks are strictly business. My parents also want family time in the evenings and on weekends.

I think enough is enough. What can I do?

Arthur

judged

Dear Arthur,

This kind of togetherness would make any ARTI CHOKE

Steamed Artichokes

1 or more artichokes
garlic cloves, lemon wedges, bay leaf

Slice about 1/2 inch off the top of the artichoke and any excess stem. Using a kitchen scissors, cut off pointed tips. Rinse the artichoke under cold water.

Fill a large saucepan with a few inches of water. Add garlic cloves, lemon wedges, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Insert your steamer basket, and place artichoke(s) inside. Reduce heat, cover the pot, and steam for 20 to 40 minutes … until a leaf pulls out easily. Place cooked artichokes upside-down in a colander to drain.

For a dipping sauce you can:

  • Melt butter and add garlic
  • Combine Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, and garlic powder
  • Or use oil and balsamic vinegar

To eat artichokes pull leaves off one at a time. Dip the base of the leaf into sauce, and draw it through your teeth, scraping off only the tender flesh of the base. Discard the rest of the leaf. When you finish eating the leaves, scoop the choke out of the base with a spoon and enjoy. Discard the rest.

Lunch at work is probably inevitable, but perhaps you can compromise on dinner.  Choose just one night a week for a family meal. That should be enough to keep everyone happy,

We all LOVE barbecue! The messier, the more sauce, the better.

Want to be sure your favorite barbecued something makes it to your mouth without spilling all over your shirt? Use a coffee filter.

Given it’s shape – and low cost – coffee filters are the perfect holders for your favorite summertime barbecue meals.

Use coffee filters to hold:

Hot Dogs
Ribs
BBQ Chicken
Corn on the cob

My buddy Juan Ton likes to use them for tacos. He uses an extra one for holding nachos.

You can even use coffee filters for hamburgers and other sandwiches. You just might want to double up.

What do you think? What’s your favorite barbecue item do you use with your coffee filters?
