We would like to thank our crowd of nearly 6,000 fans who came for an action-packed and fun-filled day at “The Joe” on Sunday. That crowd helped us set our Season Attendance Record!
Our activities included the primary promotion “NFL Night,” with additional features such as “Jewish Heritage Night,” “GE Kids in Free,” and our ever-popular “SUNDAY FUNDAY!” The weather was beautiful all day long and our 5,828 fans in attendance were able to enjoy and partake in all of the excitement from the day.
And the night capped-off with our FIREWORKS! We only have one day of fireworks left this season — Tuesday.
SUNDAY FUNDAY
Our usual “Sunday Funday” activities began as the gates opened at 3pm for Summer Reading with the players.
Felipe Tejada, Andy Pineda, and our very own Matt “Ducky” Sammarco read to the dozens in attendance in the left field tent.
After the reading, the players signed autographs and took photos with the children and their families.
Once all the reading had finished up, we invited hundreds of children and their families on the field to play catch at 4PM.
PREGAME
Catch wrapped up around 4:30PM so we could continue with our regular pregame schedule. Our festivities included the Ceremonial First Pitches…
The Veteran of The Game, Mike Melinski, being recognized right before the National Anthem…
We recognized Mike Helinksi as our Veteran of the Game, sponsored by Greg Pienkosz, Wells Fargo Financial Advisors.
A native of Troy, NY, Helinski enlisted in the Navy and served as a Signalman aboard the Allen M. Sumner Class Destroyer, the USS Gainard. During the Cold War era, his vessel was in a constant state of combat readiness and included a deployment to the Caribbean with the 6th Fleet.

GAMETIME
The IronBirds jumped on the board first, tallying two runs off the bat of Milton Ramos. That was the extent of their offense however, as it was all ValleyCats from there on out! The three ValleyCats pitchers split the nine inning workload evenly.
Shawn Dubin pitched the first three innings for Tri-City, striking out three.
Mark Moclair pitched the fourth through sixth and also struck out three.
Brett Daniels came in for the final three innings, recording two strikeouts and allowing just one hit. He lowered his season ERA to 1.71 and earned the win, which is his second of the season.
In total, the pitching staff gave up just six hits and two runs, while walking just one IronBird batter.
The offense was led by Luis Encarnacion and Enmanuel Valdez.
Encarnacion drove in three runs on the night, two of which came off his bat at 112 MPH in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. The ball traveled over the left field wall into the ValleyCats bullpen, and did it ever get out quickly!
After a two game stretch which totaled 9-for-10 at the plate, Carlos Machado notched yet another hit, extending his hit streak to eight games.
Newcomer Deury Carrasco went 1-for-3 in his first game since getting called up from the Gulf Coast League, which included a base hit to left field in his very first at-bat.
Oscar Campos also added a double.
Andy Pineda followed up with a double. His craftiness and speed on the bases led to the first run of the night for the ValleyCats.
Jimmy Murphy pitched a complete game for the IronBirds. His outing was solid, and kept his team within striking distance, but the ValleyCats were able to keep Aberdeen at-bay.
The ValleyCats hold a five-game lead in the Stedler division, shrinking their magic number to four with eight games left to be played in the regular season.

]]>The opening game of the ValleyCats series versus the Brooklyn Cyclones seemed to be a fitting way to kick-off the three-game homestand on “Not-So-Scary Halloween Night” at “The Joe.”
The ValleyCats seemed to have several “tricks” up their sleeves, and rallied off several key hits late in the game. It was a real “treat” to see the team pull out the win in front of 4,500 at “The Joe.”
We encouraged fans to dress up for our “Not-so-Scary Halloween.” Children who wore their Halloween costumes were able to join the team on the field during the National Anthem.
Trick-or-treating took place with different candy stations set up all throughout the ballpark!
We also welcomed those who took part in our year-long reading program with NY’s 529 College Savings Program Direct Plan and Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region! Children were greeted at the front entrance and received bags for their trick-or-treating.

Prior to the game, Hannaford helped us to present The Food Pantries of the Capital District with a check on the field.
We had several Ceremonial First Pitches thrown.
VETERAN OF THE GAME
Duane Susi was recognized on the field prior to the National Anthem.
The Electric City Chorus belted out a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem.

Carlos Hiraldo started on the mound:
He went 4.1 IP, he gave up three runs and struck out three before Nivaldo Rodriguez and Layne Henderson went the rest of the way keeping the Cyclones at bay, and not allowing another run.
Rodriguez struck out seven batters in just 3.1 innings. Layne Henderson shut the door with a hitless ninth inning. He tallied two K’s in his inning of work to earn the first save of his professional career, locking down Tri-City’s 6–3, series-opening win.
Austin Dennis, Logan Mattix and Oscar Campos each came away with two-hit games.
Luis Encarnacion brought home the tying run, while Alex Holderbach gave the ValleyCats the lead with a two-run double.
Alex Holderbach drove in a team-high two runs on a double which scored Andy Pineda and Encarnacion.
In-Game Activities
The action wasn’t just limited to the game…we had plenty of exciting activities and promotions going on for our energized crowd of 4,500 with our version of Halloween.

To everyone’s usual delight, the Tri-City mayors made their rounds.
Now with a record of 34–27, the ValleyCats snap their four-game losing streak and add to their lead for first place in the Stedler division, which is now at 1.5 games over the Lowell Spinners.

ValleyCats starter Brett Daniels was untouchable. He allowed just one man to reach in four hitless innings, but left the game one inning shy of qualifying for the win.
Drew Ferguson, who is with the ValleyCats on a rehab assignment for Triple-A Fresno, went deep during a three-run second inning.
Michael Wielansky hit his second career home run in the fourth inning.
Carlos Machado drove a pitch back up the middle, scoring a run.
Alex Holderbach was able to keep this ball fair for an infield single right down the third base line.

With its fifth win against Brooklyn, Tri-City has taken the season series from the Cyclones, and they’ll seek a three-game sweep on Wednesday night, eyeing a 7 p.m. first pitch.

GAMETIME
Connecticut scored one each in the second and third innings, highlighted by a 434-foot homer off the bat of Nick Ames.
The Tri-City ValleyCats used three unanswered runs, including two in the seventh inning to take their series-opener from the Connecticut Tigers by a score of 3–2. Andy Pineda manufactured all three of the ValleyCats’ runs.
Pineda singled in the fifth inning, stole second and scored from there on an RBI-single from Austin Dennis to give the ValleyCats’ their first run of the game.
Oscar Campos went 2/3 while also tossing a runner out trying to steal.
Ramiro Rodriguez lined out to Nick Ames at first base. Ames tried to double-up Pineda, who was at third at the time of the hard liner. The ball got past third baseman Cam Warner, resulting in the game-winning run coming across.
The 3–2 win puts the ValleyCats at 33–23 on the season, a season-high 10 games above .500, with a three-game lead over Lowell for first place in the Stedler division.
Brett Conine and Carlos Hiraldo then held the Tigers off the scoreboard the rest of the way through, while Hiraldo earned his team-lead-tying fourth win of the season.
It’s safe to say, a fun time was had by all!

]]>This set the scene for Luis Encarnacion. The Tri-City ValleyCats knew the situation; they had been there before. This was their FOURTH WALK-OFF of the season!
Encarnacion dragged a 1–0 pitch into left field. Alex McKenna, who has been struggling with a foot injury, raced around third as Jason Bell waved him through. It appeared as though the throw was well-ahead of schedule. McKenna slid, and as he did, Renegades catcher was unable to come up with the throw off the short-hop. The umpire motioned “SAFE,” and pandemonium ensued.

Along with Greg Pienkosz & Wells Fargo Financial Advisors, we were honored to recognize Staff Sergeant Jim Huelle as our Veteran of the Game! Staff Sergeant Huelle began his military career in 1990 by entering the United States Coast Guard. He was instrumental in the rescue of the aircrew of an Air National Guard helicopter that ran out of fuel, for which he received a Coast Guard Medal. Afterwards, he spent the next six years as a Search and Rescue Aircrewman on both the HC-130 aircraft and HH65 helicopter. After almost a 10 year break due to a battle with cancer, he re-enlisted after 9/11 into the NY Army National Guard, and is currently a Director at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs. THANK YOU for your service and dedication to our country!

PREGAME!
The day started with gates opening around 2pm, and children and their families joining players for summer reading, followed by catch on the field!
Riley and Alex read a few books to dozens of children before the game!
They also stuck around for autographs!
Once the reading was done, the children were able to play catch on the field with their families…What an enjoyable way to start the festivities!

]]>This homestand has been nothing short of unusual. The ValleyCats opened up their series versus the Doubledays with “Latino Heritage Night” on Tuesday. The gates opened at 5PM for “Tunes For Tuesday” and, of course, Jose Altuve Bobblehead Night!
The Bobblehead giveaway was our first of this season; we distributed them to our first 1,500 fans through the doors.
Alex Torres & members of his orchestra performed as a part of our “Latino Night / Tunes for Tuesday” festivities! They played until 6:30, and a large crowd of fans were able to enjoy their music prior to the game.

The Tri-City ValleyCats fittingly rallied behind several clutch performances from their Latino players on “Latino Heritage Night.” Carlos Machado hit a three-run homer down the left field line to tie the score at 4 in the bottom of the sixth…And wow, was it CRUSHED! It was his second homer of the season.
Enmanuel Valdez brought home the winning run after the Doubledays tied the game late.
Jeremy Pena brought home the ValleyCats’ first run with a sacrifice fly that tied the score at 1–1. He also notched a hit.
Tim Hardy struck out the side out in his first inning of work in relief.
Mark Moclair threw for 1.1 innings, allowing no runs while striking out four. In extra innings, France struck a batter out and then induced a 6–4–3 double play. Pena bunted for a hit to not only move the runner up 90 feet from second to third, but also put additional pressure on the Doubledays. This set the table for Valdez’s heroics.
Unfortunately, our plans to have a game Wednesday were dampened. We had to postpone that game due to severe rain and thunderstorms.
Games 2 & 3 of the series began early Thursday morning for “Camp Day / Senior Day.” Thousands of campers came to “The Joe” for the game at 11AM. Again, Mother Nature seemed to be uncooperative with our game plans, however after a 2-hour rain delay, we were back in action!
The ValleyCats dropped the first game in the last inning after holding a 3–1 lead through the seventh. The Doubledays took that one 4–3.
Our lineup for Game 2 on the day:
Juan Pablo Lopez was stellar in his start. He went three innings allowing just one hit while striking out four.
Game 3 of the series had a better outcome for the ‘Cats however as they bounced back and the offense turned back on. Pineda and McKenna led the way with two hits each. Carlos Machado opened up the scoring with a base hit in the third.

Hansen was great on the mound, he struck out two in 2.2 innings pitched, showing great control and poise.

The ValleyCats opened up to a 3–0 lead, and held that through the sixth inning. The Doubledays fought back in the seventh, yet again. But the ‘Cats were able to strand their runners and end the threat to win, and take the series.
The ValleyCats host the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow for the first game of that series, starting at 7PM.

The stadium was packed with fans sporting their favorite superhero costumes and apparel.

We honored 10 individuals at tonight’s game for “Community Heroes Night.” These individuals were recognized for going above and beyond in their communities. This was our way of showing our appreciation for their dedication and service to the community.

JASON DUTCHER — New York State Police
While on patrol, Trooper Dutcher was the first emergency responder on the scene of a structure fire in Rotterdam, and began to assist with evacuating residents from the three-story building. He entered the smoke filled house and dragged the third floor tenant out of the home, saving his life. For his heroic efforts, the New York State Police awarded Trooper Dutcher with a Superintendent’s Commendation Award.
JANINE CAMMARATA — Author/Founder: Nick’s Fight to be Healed
Janine is the President and Co-Founder of Nick’s Fight to be Healed, an organization created to help pediatric cancer patients and their families during a very difficult time in their lives. Janine lost her son Nick to Leukemia in 2008, and founded this organization in 2009 with her husband Lucas. Janine puts in countless hours to raise money, and since 2010 the foundation has raised $825,000! Janine is also a writer who authored “What Makes Them Amazing: Inspiring Stories of Young Adults Fighting Cancer.”
LUKE HOAG — Student/Founder: Luke’s Believe Campaign
Luke is a young student who has overcome cancer, and now gives back to others who are facing similar situations. This year alone, he has collected more than 62,000 letters in which Macy’s has donated $2 each to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Luke is a Hoosick Falls hero, who has an incredible desire to help others get their wish. After Luke received his wish trip, it did not end there. Luke continues to keep on giving; he is an inspiration to many.
CLAIRE GRANT — Volunteer, Westland Hills Baseball/Softball / American Legion Post 1520
Claire has been involved with Westland Hills for over 40 years, volunteering her time to manage the concession stand. She has no children in the league, but does it for the good of those who come to the park to play ball. She has also spent over 20 years volunteering at the American Legion, Joseph E. Zaloga Post 1520, serving veterans in multiple roles such as overseeing the monthly newsletter, assisting with BINGO, chairing the Auxiliary’s Family & Youth Committee, and more!
STEVE PECHACEK — Disabled Veteran & STRIDE Volunteer
Steve is an athlete and volunteer extraordinaire for STRIDE, and has found his niche as a leader of the STRIDE sled hockey team! As a disabled veteran, Steve is a shining example of how a positive attitude will take you anywhere you want to go in life. His leadership skills have driven him to be the primary fundraiser for the Capital District Sled Warriors. Steve gives back to STRIDE by volunteering at events and assisting in camp counseling for kids.
JONI BONILLA — President/Founder/Trainer, Operation At Ease, Inc.
Joni is the President and Founder of Operation At Ease, Inc., which is a non-profit organization that pairs shelter dogs with veterans who have PTSD, and then provides a guided training program for the dog to become the veteran’s service dog. All of this is done at no cost to the veteran. Joni works tirelessly to match dogs with veterans who encounter accessibility issues, and puts her heart and soul into Operation At Ease 24/7. She is truly a community hero who is helping veterans, saving dogs, and changing lives.
KIRSTEN BROSCHINSKY — Director of Annual Giving, Make-A-Wish Northeast New York
Kirsten plays a vital role in the planning of annual events such as A Wishful Evening Gala, helping outside groups with their fundraisers to benefit Make-A-Wish, and working to develop and implement an Annual Fund plan that invites donors to support Make-A-Wish throughout the year. Kirsten lives in Albany with her husband Solon, and dog Oscar. She enjoys hiking, yoga, reading, running, and spending time with those she loves.
JACK BRENNAN & JERRY SMITH — Firefighters, Elsmere Fire District
John “Jack” Brennan has been a firefighter for 44+ years, and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Jerome “Jerry” Smith was recently honored for 50 years of service, and has served as both Fire Lieutenant and Fire Captain. Jack and Jerry’s commitment to serving the residents of Bethlehem by protecting lives and property, is exemplary. Combined, Jack and Jerry have responded to more than 2,400 emergency incidents and have logged more than 6,900 hours between responding to calls, participating in training, along with other official duties.
RICHARD L. BUTTERFIELD — Vietnam Veteran, Retired Army Brig. General
Richard has spent his life serving our country both locally and abroad, having earned over 28 awards including a Purple Heart. Richard served in Vietnam, and had many other assignments during his service. He was wounded while evacuating other injured soldiers, and has received countless medals and commendations. Richard was also employed by the NYS Police from 1970–2006 as a Trooper, K-9 bomb dog handler, scuba diver, and more. Richard continues to serve today, as an investigator with the Warren County Sheriff’s office.

Gilberto Celestino led the offensive charge with a go-ahead, two-out, two-run home run in the seventh inning. Trailing 3–2 into the seventh, the ValleyCats rallied for four runs to take the lead. Celestino’s two-run homer against Cyclones reliever Mac Lozer provided the spark for the big inning.
Alex McKenna remained hot at the plate with his second straight two-hit game.
Tim Hardy then closed out the game with a six-out save, his team-leading fourth of the year.
Tri-City avoided being swept for the first time this season, beating Brooklyn 7–3. The ValleyCats remain tied with the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division, and will now travel to Staten Island for three weekend games against the Yankees

]]>On Wednesday, the ValleyCats hosted the Brooklyn Cyclones for the second game of their three game series, as “Harry Potter Night” brought the inner-wizard out of everyone!
The day started early for some, with the first session of ValleyCats Academy starting up at 9am. Dozens of players ages 10–13 “learned from the pros” for the Fielding & Hitting session. They rotated around through various groups and drills to help foster their skills and develop new ones.

This two-day program is designed to teach players ages 10–13 how to build their individual skills fielding and hitting. ValleyCats players and staff adjust drills and exercises according to each group of campers.
The campers had the opportunity to work with ValleyCats players and staff while practicing on the field at The Joe.
Today included a stretch-run-throw, offense and defense fundamentals, and hitting. Campers will be taking live Batting Practice for Day Two of the camp.
HARRY POTTER NIGHT!
As fans entered through the gates at 6pm, they were encouraged to visit the sorting hat and see which house they belonged to…Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin?…
We saw some GREAT Harry Potter attire…
Our specialty for the night, Butter Beer, was being served at the Budweiser concession…And our fans just couldn’t get enough of it!
We also had a non-alcoholic version of this special drink, so it was popular with the guests of all ages all night long.
The pregame ceremonies included first pitches being thrown by John Ray & Sons/Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kaitlin Salomon from Ronald McDonald House Charities, Brendan Kantscheidt — who was celebrating his birthday, and FEAR — Saint Rose’s Mascot!
Then Brendan Kantscheidt and his Dick’s Sporting Goods Baseball Buddies took the field with the ValleyCats for the National Anthem…
Our Veteran of the Game was recognized and then the National Anthem was performed by flutist Lydia Flynn.

Alex McKenna hit the first home run of his professional career in the first inning to tie the game at 3–3. It was a three-run shot. Then, he hit his second career home run/second home run of the game in the eighth inning. He accounted for four of the ValleyCats’ five runs.
However, the Cyclones sparked behind a few big innings, and would then go on to tack on four more runs between the sixth and eighth innings.
Austin Dennis then brought home the game’s final run with a single in the ninth inning to cement the game’s final score at 11–5 Brooklyn.
Now 18–14 on the season, the ValleyCats are locked in a tie with the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division. They host the Cyclones in the final game of the series and hope to take a win away from them heading into a three-game set versus Staten Island on the road.
It’s “Community Heroes/Superheroes Night” today, so come on out to “The Joe” dressed as your favorite hero!

]]>The Tri-City ValleyCats hosted thousands of fans on Monday, July 9th for the first “Camp Day” of the year.
Children from camps across the state and surrounding areas flocked to “The Joe” for a morning matinee of ValleyCats baseball.
Our first pitches were thrown…
And our National Anthem was performed!
The first pitch from J.B. Bukauskas was delivered at 11AM in his second rehab start for Tri-City.
The ValleyCats set the tone of the game with a four-run first inning.
Bukauskas hurled three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six batters.
The Tri-City ValleyCats used a 4-for-5 day at the plate from Gilberto Celestino to complete a three-game sweep of the Aberdeen Ironbirds with a 7–3 win on Monday afternoon at The Joe. This was his fifth straight multi-hit game. He also scored a run and racked up two runs batted in.
Cody Deason, Austin Hansen and Brett Daniels then each pitched two innings, allowing one run a piece over the fifth, sixth and ninth innings. Cesar Salazar then delivered a two-run double, scoring Valdez and Pena to give Tri-City a 3–0 lead. Luis Encarnacion brought home Alex McKenna on a sacrifice fly for the inning’s final run.
The 7–3 win over the IronBirds closed out the series and sealed the ValleyCats their first sweep of the season!
The ValleyCats then hit the road for a series in Williamsport. They took a win from them before traveling to State College, PA and recording their SECOND SWEEP OF THE SEASON. Both sweeps coming in just one week’s time!
IRISH NIGHT!
Last night, the ValleyCats kicked off their series versus the New York Mets affiliate, the Brooklyn Cyclones. “Irish Night” started looking like it might be rainy. The day progressed and rain kept coming down into the early afternoon. However, we were able to pull the tarp at 4pm.

We then had a clear night to dance an Irish jig and celebrate the historic culture of Ireland.
Beginning at 5pm, the gates opened and fans were greeted by the wonderful LIVE IRISH MUSIC from the band Hair Of The Dog. Hundreds of guests came early and enjoyed the tunes!
The band seemed to have a new member for the day…

Mark Moclair started on the mound. He entered the contest striking out 16 batters in just over seven innings pitched. Tonight, he had a rough patch going just 1.2 innings, however he did strike out four batters.
Shawn Dubin, Brett Conine, Hansel Paulino and Riley Cabral combined to pitch the rest of the game.
What a beautiful sunset we had!…And to think it was raining all day up until 4pm…

Brooklyn’s pitching ended up overpowering the ValleyCats lineup however, blanking the offense 5–0.
