How weird is it that Metroid is back, and in its classic form no less? Eschewing the 3D or first-person of more recent titles in the set, Dread takes things back to Metroid’s classic form for its latest big console launch.

Dread is a long time coming too. The game was all but canned years ago, only to make a shock return at this past E3. And here we are, now on the edge of it’s launch as what’s apparently Nintendo’s Holiday anchor.

Outside of that though, this week is a big week all around. The critical darling RPG Disco Elysium is also out, as is the latest hit puzzler in the Tetris series, the port of Darksiders III, RiMS Racing, and a very interesting looking demake of the already retro shooter Dusk.

Genesis of art

As video games go, Darksiders has one of the more unique looks going. There’s a reason for that of course, that being that comic book artist Joe Madureira designed almost everything about the popular series. Maybe that’s why publisher Udon has a small library going already, celebrating its art.

With Darksiders III hitting last year, and Darksiders Genesis making its PC and Stadia debut recently though, it’s just about time for another.

Darksiders Genesis heralds the return of series creator Joe Madureira (Battle Chasers, Uncanny X-men) alongside his development studio, Airship Syndicate. THE ART OF DARKSIDERS GENESIS will feature Madureira’s signature art style, synonymous with the Darksiders series. Featuring detailed character designs, rough concepts, environments, storyboards, and more from Madureira and the Darksiders team, fans of the series will not want to miss out on this essential addition to their Darksiders collection! 

Udon

The book will contain a whopping 240 pages of art, and be presented in hardcover format. From the looks of it, it’s loaded with cool stuff about the game’s bestiary and levels. That should make fans happy.

You will have a little while to wait however. The Art of Darksiders Genesis isn’t scheduled to hit retail till June 2020. It’s pre-orderable now however, and will run you $49.99 USD.

If you don’t know, being a Twitch Prime subscriber nets you a set of free games to play on PC every month. It’s been a pretty decent selection thus far too, with the likes of the original Yooka Laylee and more.

November’s listing is equally impressive, with some lesser known titles and a true gem in the form of Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition. The “definitive” DSII experience, the Deathinitive Edition of Darksiders II might be a little long in the tooth, but it’s a flat out great game that is a treat to get for free.

Forbidden!

Tabletop games don’t seem to be going anywhere. In fact, they seem more popular today than they have been in years. To that end, THQ Nordic is dipping its toe in the pool with the premium version of Darksiders Genesis.

The Nefilim Edition of Genesis includes a bunch of goodies for fans to dig into. But the cherry on the top has to be the full blown board game. Called Darksiders: The Forbidden Land, this game looks to be stunningly fully featured, including even miniatures… pre-painted miniatures.

Gameplay sounds pretty simple, as each playable rider will get a deck of cards. These cards serve to help you interact with the game’s world and fight bad guys.

With asymmetric player abilities, you can play as War, Death, Fury or Strife and experience the game completely differently each time. Beside 61 phenomenally detailed and pre-painted minis, the game includes customisable decks of cards for each Rider. That means that even multiple games with the same rider will be different. Manage your cards well, as you will be using them to move, attack enemies and upgrade your rider using Darksiders: The Forbidden Land’s unique new card economy mechanic. But don’t blow through them too quickly though, because once your deck runs out you’ve lost the battle.

A quest for 5

All together the game supports up to 5 players. Four can play as the Horsemen themselves, War, Death, Fury, and Strife, while 1 more can become the game master. That’s exactly what it sounds like, as the GM pits the whole of The Forbidden Land against the other players. If you don’t have a GM though, not to worry, the game can manage baddies itself.

The campaign of The Forbidden Land sees players going head to head with The Jailer across 19 levels. Of course, how you tackle these level is up to you. You can play them straight through, break them up, or make your own.

Getting the band back together

Darksiders has been a pretty interesting series, all things considered. All three of the previous games in the set have varied to a degree from one another. This fourth title, revealed today, is the most unique one yet. Darksiders Genesis totally turns the formula on its head, moving the DS universe into the isometric action/RPG arena.

It also stars the final Horseman, Strife.

In Darksiders Genesis, the fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse STRIFE is called upon to save humankind from certain destruction at the hands of Lucifer. True to its roots, Darksiders Genesis will feature intense combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, epic boss battles and serpent holes from heaven to hell. The game marks the first, full-scale Darksiders adventure played from the top-down perspective.

Warmastered

Originally released just after the New Year in 2010, the original Darksiders introduced a fresh, detailed, and just plain cool looking world. With designs from comic book artist Joe Madureira though, that was bound to happen. The series since has shaped a post-apocalyptic landscape that’s unique from any other.

The original Darksiders showcased a future where the biblical apocalypse had its way with Earth. You play as the Horseman of the Apocalypse War, framed for triggering the end of the world.

Now on the Nintendo Switch, fans get the revamped version of Darksiders, dubbed the Warmastered Edition.

On the dark side

Yes, it’s a month late (who’s counting?), but nevertheless we could not let November 2018 go by without a Game of the Month. And I for one am glad we didn’t, since this was a battle.

November was one of the biggest months for new game releases on the calendar last year, and that showed in our voting. One game stood just that much above all the others though, and it was THQ Nordic’s third Darksiders title.

The latest in the series is radically different from what’s come before, changing up the formula. Some have even called it “Dark Souls lite”. What’s not different though is the excellent setting, concept, and design, all of which came together with the solid gameplay to create the most memorable adventure of the month.

But remember I said that we had a battle for this one? Well we absolutely did, with a solid silver placement for none other than Tetris Effect.

The newest in the line of Tetris games, that started way back on the NES is a gem. Not only does the title mix in classic gameplay and new gimmicks, but it also includes PSVR support. Placing tetriminos in VR? Sounds like a proper good time.

Coming Up… and out already

Well, it’s happened before. Once before, scince we started this feature, we forgot about it and ended up posting it halfway through the month. And here we are again. This being November too, there are quite a few games worth mentioning here, in our monthly watch for what’s next.

Already out this month are the likes of Diablo III on the Switch, the packaged version of Hitman 2, developer Overkill’s take on The Walking Dead, the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for the Switch, and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Some interesting stuff mixed in there.

There’s plenty more to come too. Although, as important as November and December are for companies bottom lines, the release do start to dry up for the year. Release a game too close to the peak Christmas buying season after all, and you kind of cut your window short.

Again though, there are some biggies to come, and they start with today’s release of the all-new, online Fallout title.

Playstation 4:

The biggest draws for players this month will likely be the Playstation 4 offerings. These are Darksiders 2: The Deathinitive Edition and Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends.

Now, one of these games is pretty old, while the other is not something many enthusiasts will likely be drawn to. Even though the game is a little older, I can say for certain that Darksiders 2 is a good one, and one that you should pick up if you have any interest whatsoever in that world. The other one, I cannot speak to. Here is what the Playstation blog says: “In Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends, face off alongside or against Po and other Kung Fu Panda characters in up-to four person battles in the iconic Kung Fu Panda universe. This is the perfect game to bring families together for some friendly rivalry during the holidays.”

And everything else:

Playstation 3 gets the Syberia Collection and Xblaze Lost: Memories. the Vita recieves Forma.8 and Wanted Corp. Forma is crossbuy with the PS4.

I don’t know anything about these games, so I can’t recommend or warn of them.

There are a few other cool bonuses this month, though. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is still free until January 2. This is a VR on rails shooter in the world of Until Dawn. Shoot Wendigo to your heart’s content! A free pack for Smite is available as well.

In addition to all of this, the beta for Monster Hunter: World will be available for Playstaiton Plus subscribers from December 9 through December 12.

And yes, it’s on the Wii U

Honestly –honestly- I had kind of figured that the cancellation of the Wii U’s Warmastered was a foregone conclusion. I mean, with the Nintendo Switch on the way, why not can the Wii U port and bring the game to the Switch instead? The rumors made total sense.

And yet here we are on April the 7th with THQ Nordic announcing that the Wii U version is still a go. In fact, it’s more than a go, it’ll be here next month. So, if you still have your Wii U out, well you might want to take a look cause it’s a pretty good game.

The puzzling nature of not hitting the Switch aside, Darksiders is terrific. It’s a kind of Zelda-like in gameplay, but way darker and more gruesome. Not that it’s over the top gory, but it’s more mature than any Zelda title with its biblical theme.

That’s part of what’s so frustrating about this announcement. The Wii U gets a port of it, but the Switch doesn’t? It can’t be that the game wouldn’t fit on the Switch’s carts. So was it that THQ Nordic wasn’t sold on Nintendo’s latest before launch? Maybe that they figured that the older audience Darksiders is aimed at wouldn’t be there? Or did they figure on the console being another Wii U, and that it would provide as harsh a climate to third-parties as Nintendo’s last-gen effort?

If either of the former were the case, then I can understand. There had to have been a fair bit of wait-and-see happening in more than one publishing house before the Switch arrived. To be fair, it’s been a hit for Nintendo so far, with some great numbers across the boards.

It’s the latter though, that worries me.

Nintendo’s platforms have built a reputation of being very limited in terms of third-party games over the Wii and Wii U eras. And as great as their first-party titles are, well that’s kind of all there was for fans to buy. With the Switch though, there was a palpable shift. Sure Nintendo talked up their own games above all others prior to launch, but there was plenty of coverage for non-Nintendo stuff too. There was an attitude floating around that maybe we might see a healthy third-party presence on their newest console.

Since the console has launched last month though, there’s been one killer app (BotW). But that’s not the only issue. We saw an anemic initial lineup and precious little on the horizon to look forward to from big publishers. Some fun indies aside, we’ve got LEGO City Undercover (which is no blockbuster), and that’s about it since the console hit the streets. And I’m no fan of ports, but it would have been nice to have seen a few recent releases brought over too.

I know it’s still ‘not cool’ to laud blockbusters either, but I have always maintained that a platform needs them to survive. Period. And blockbusters from one company (Nintendo) ain’t gonna cut it. Now, I also understand that a Darksiders remaster doesn’t exactly count as a “blockbuster”, but it poises that interesting question.

Make or break Holiday

In the end, it’ll be this coming Holiday season that tells the tale of the Switch. If E3 comes around, and a bunch of third-party title are announced for the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch, then I’ll happily say that I was wrong to be worried.

Also if that happens? I’ll be shocked. I just can’t see it. In fact, I imagine that the E3 to come this June will hold a few “Nintendo games” for the Switch, probably some talk about what’s coming in 2018, and little else. But I hope I’m wrong.

Oh, and if you haven’t played Darksiders in its original form, or the first run of Warmastered from the PS4 and Xbox One, then it’s probably worth your time. It really is a good game. You can expect the Wii U version to arrive on May 23rd.
