Provo, Utah — The Boys & Girls Club of Utah County today announced that nCino, a global leader in intelligent banking software with a significant presence in Utah, will partner with the Club to expand access to technology and STEM education for local teens through the creation of the nCino Innovation Lab at the Club’s new Kent B. Nelson Provo Clubhouse.
Located in the heart of Provo, the nCino Innovation Lab will serve teens ages 12–18 from across Utah County, with a focus on youth from areas experiencing the highest levels of need. The space will provide hands-on access to technology, STEM programming, and career-connected learning opportunities designed to prepare young people for success in Utah’s rapidly growing technology economy.

]]>As schools and businesses closed in March, the Club went virtual by offering programming and support for children at home, including homework help, online fitness classes, and hands-on activities. Over 1,700 youth had access to the Club’s virtual programming throughout the rest of the school year. Additionally, in coordination with UServe Utah, the Club’s administrative offices became Utah County’s donation center for Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to be used in local hospitals and testing locations. Over 20,000 PPE items were collected between March and July of this year.
The demand for food support rose significantly as parents were furloughed and children no longer had access to school lunch. From serving 400 meals a day in January and February, the Club’s child nutrition program grew to serving 4,000 grab-and-go meals each day. Over 200,000 meals were served between March and August of this year. One member of the community said, “My husband’s hours were cut down due to the COVID-19 shutdown, the meals you provided helped a lot. I know the meals made a big difference for a number of my neighbors as well.”
In April, The Provo Clubhouse reopened as an emergency childcare center (ECC) to provide childcare for first responders and essential workers. “The Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County has been a lifeline for my family,” said Jeni Jones. Jeni and her husband Jason work for Intermountain Healthcare, Jeni as a communications specialist and Jason as a nurse. The Joneses, like so many others, were suddenly thrown into the challenges of working from home, while also homeschooling and caring for their two young children. Through the One Utah Childcare Program, the Joneses qualified for emergency childcare and were matched with the Club’s emergency childcare center. The ECC provided support for the Joneses and many other families through the end of June.
After the ECC closed, the Club opened a modified summer program in place of its traditional summer camp program. For six weeks, Club members participated in academic learning, fun activities, and lots of socializing while also operating within Utah state guidelines. All staff and Club members wore masks, youth were kept in small groups separated from the other groups, social distancing was practiced during meal times, and Club spaces were sanitized between every rotation and use.
Similar safety precautions have been implemented as the Club has reopened its afterschool programs in coordination with local school districts. Already, the return to school has been marked by significant uncertainty, larger equity gaps, learning losses for many students, and continued economic strain on families. The Club is doing everything it can to alleviate these challenges and help youth gain access to the tools they need to make up those differences including homework help, STEM learning, digital citizenship, enrichment activities, healthy meals and snacks, and the support of caring adult mentors.

Through the One Utah Childcare Program, the Joneses qualified for emergency childcare and were matched with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County’s emergency childcare center. “When we were selected for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County, I sobbed and exhaled for the first time in weeks,” said Jeni. “Since then, our lives have improved dramatically…and my stress level has returned to a manageable state.”
Jeni and Jason aren’t unique in this situation, families across the state have been required to balance work and home life, while functioning within the same space. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County opened as an emergency childcare center in April, providing support to essential employees throughout Utah County in need of childcare. “These services have been implemented during this pandemic to support our community and alleviate burdens on struggling families and essential employees” said David Bayles, Executive Director of the Club. “It has been humbling to see government, individuals, and businesses step up to support these efforts.”
In addition to emergency childcare services, the Club has served over 100,000 grab-and-go meals and snacks to thousands of Utah County families. “Grab-and-go meals have experienced a huge increase in demand,” said Kennedy Durfey, Child Nutrition Director. “We are serving over 10,000 meals per week.” Scott Johnson, a member of the Club’s Board of Directors, has seen the difference the Club is making firsthand. “Some of my neighbors who are out of work right now have been picking up meals and I know it has been a blessing to them,” said Scott. Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County is doing what they can to support the community by
providing a variety services including virtual afterschool programming, grab-and-go meals,
emergency childcare for essential employees, and acting as UServe’s personal protective
equipment donation center for Utah County.
“Grab-and-go meals have experienced a huge increase in demand,” said Kennedy Durfey, the
Boys & Girls Club’s Child Nutrition Coordinator. “We are serving over 10,000 meals per week.”
Meals are being served at Franklin Elementary, Sunset View Elementary, and Timpanogos
Elementary, Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 1:00pm.
Additionally, in coordination with UServe Utah, the Boys & Girls Club’s administrative offices
are now acting as the Utah County donation collection point for Personal Protection Equipment
(PPE) to be used in local hospitals and testing locations. Donations of the following items are
requested: N95 clinical or industrial masks, surgical masks, level 3 or 4 isolation gowns, surgical
gowns, Tyvek suits, medical grade face shields, medical grade goggles, ventilators, examination
gloves, sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer, specimen collection kits, and lab testing materials. To

Although the Club’s traditional afterschool programs have transitioned to virtual services during
the Covid-19 outbreak, the Provo Clubhouse is now operating as an emergency childcare facility
through One Utah Childcare to help support first responders and essential employees.
“All of these services have been implemented during the past few weeks to help support our
community and alleviate burdens on struggling families and on essential employees” says David
Bayles, Executive Director of the Club. “It has been humbling to see individuals and businesses
step up to support these efforts.”
To help with the associated costs of providing these services and to support families in need,
the Club has set up a Utah County COVID-19 Relief Fund. Members of the community are asked
to donate to the fund by visiting bgcutah.org/COVIDRelief. All proceeds are tax deductible and
will be used to provide COVID-19 relief services to the Utah County community.

]]>Provo, Utah, February 4, 2019-Jordan Hunter has been selected as the Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County. The Youth of the Year title is bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 72nd year, the Youth of the Year program honors young people on their path to great futures and encourages all kids to lead, succeed, and inspire. Jordan will contend for the Utah Youth of the Year title and a $5,000 college scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Jordan is a senior at the Walden School in Provo, Utah. He has helped shape many of the most successful Boys & Girls clubs at Walden. Jordan is co-president of the Environmental Club, a key member of the Dungeons & Dragons Club, and founder of The Study of the Mystic Club. Jordan is passionate about wildlife conservation and preserving our environment at both local and global levels. Jordan is an advocate for destigmatizing conversations about mental health and mental illness and is a role model for his community around better mental health practices. Jordan is a student in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Walden and has been accepted at Utah State University where he plans to major in Environmental Studies. About his dream job, he is able to answer without hesitation, “Conservation officer with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources!”
If Jordan wins at the state competition, he will compete for the title of Pacific Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 college scholarship, renewable for four years. The regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C. in September 2019, to compete for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year will receive an additional scholarship of $25,000, renewable for four years. The Youth of the Year program is presented by The Walt Disney Company, empowering young people to reach their full potential and providing youth with access to the tools they need to build the great futures they imagine. ]]>Provo, Utah, December 19, 2018-This year, 247 kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County have received new winter clothing, boots, clothes, and toys thanks to the generosity and kindness of Acumen Learning, JCPenney, Wayfair, Planet Fitness, and many other individuals and families. “It has been an amazing experience to partner with so many generous companies, employees, families, and individuals,” said Shanni Call, Director of Operations. “We wouldn’t have been able to meet the needs of so many of our Club members without all this support.”
“This is such a great program,” said Steve Call, Director of Business Development at Acumen Learning. “We love serving kids in need that are right around us. We hope to make this a Christmas tradition for our company.” Acumen Learning has partnered with the Club for the past two years to provide Christmas gifts for Club kids. This year, Acumen Learning provided clothing and toys for 43 kids from two different Club locations.
On December 15, JCPenney provided 25 Club kids with a giving spree. Each child was accompanied by a parent or family member and had the opportunity to spend $100 on clothes, coats, and gifts for themselves and family members. “The shopping spree really helped the families in my program, especially those who recently moved to the United States,” said Sarah Jensen, program director. This shopping event is just one of the ways that JCPenney is helping close the opportunity gap for youth in our community.
In 2004, Wayfair created a company giving program that is guided by employees. This year, the employees at Wayfair in Orem hosted a giving tree to purchase gifts for kids and families throughout Utah County, including 18 kids from the Club. The majority of the gifts came from the generosity of Wayfair employees.
Donations from NuSkin, Planet Fitness, and generous individuals and families provided gifts for the remaining 161 Club kids. “As a single mom, I am so grateful for those who are willing to help my children have a wonderful Christmas. I have taught my kids that Christmas isn’t about the presents, but it’s nice to know that they’ll have something under the tree to be excited about,” said a Club mom. “Thank you to all those who have helped my family this year.”

]]>Provo, Utah, April 20, 2018- Interested in making friends while playing sports, conducting science experiments, and expressing yourself through art and dance? Sign up for a specialty camp! This summer the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County are offering a variety of specialty camps for kids in Utah County from grades K-6. For the first time, kids do not need to be club members in order to participate.
Camps offered include soccer, basketball, flag football, watercolor, drawing, mixed media, contemporary dance, hip hop, folk dance, STEM exploration, and entrepreneurship. Each camp is limited to 12 students and will run approximately three weeks, with a showcase day at the end which parents are invited to attend. The camps will repeat in three sessions throughout the summer, and individuals may sign up for multiple camps and sessions. All camps will take place at the Boys & Girls Clubhouse located at 1060 East 150 North in Provo, Utah; camps run in addition to and in conjunction with the club’s traditional day camp program.

18th Annual Golf Tournament Honors LaVell’s Legacy of Giving
Provo, Utah, April 16, 2018- The 18th annual LaVell Edwards Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Monday, May 7, 2018 at the Riverside Country Club golf course, located at 2701 N University Avenue in Provo, Utah. For the past 18 years, the tournament has raised approximately $100,000 to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Utah County. A frequent donor, honorary guest, and speaker at Club events, legendary BYU football coach LaVell Edwards sponsored the golf tournament every year from 2000 until he passed away in December 2016.
Highlights of this year’s tournament include 18 holes of golf, mulligan opportunities, and cart; a continental breakfast; a shotgun start with a four person best ball scramble; and additional contests on various holes. The tournament also includes a live auction with tremendous prizes, drawings, and contests worth thousands of dollars, along with lunch at the clubhouse. Each player will receive one dozen Titleist Pro V1 golf balls.
