I asked my friend who owns a roofing business about labor. His average wage is $28/hour. He is paying $13 an hour to start, along with health insurance, for completely raw, untrained labor. He adds a dollar an hour for several defined skills and accomplishments – having a clean license so the worker can drive a work vehicle, for example.
He has the demand to grow, but can’t get the labor. $28/hour is more than some college grads make in office jobs.
