When you first started your business, it was exciting.  You had big dreams, big goals, and a plan mapped out to accomplish them all. But, then as you set to work on growing your business, you discovered that making money with your business is not going as well as you had hoped for. You’re not making the kind of money you need to sustain your business. So, what do you do when your business isn’t making money?

If you’ve asked yourself, “Why isn’t my business making money?” have you really taken time to think about this? In many cases, we know why weren’t not making enough money (if we’re really honest with ourselves).  But there are a few common issues that businesses have when it comes to making money. Here are some things that might be keeping your business from making money.

Why isn’t my business making money?

1. You’re not focusing on lead generation and new sales

Every business makes money the say way, using the same basic formula: sales minus expenses equals profit. Your business can’t make any money if you don’t have leads, customers, and sales.

Entrepreneurs often start off working on lead generation and sales, but then they get some clients and stop dedicating time to finding new clients.  Pretty soon, they run out of customers and stop making money.

If you want your business to be profitable and grow, lead generation and sales always have to be a priority.  You might need to invest in advertising, search engine optimization, content marketing, creating sales funnels, or email marketing.

2. You’re attracting the wrong clients and customers

are you attracting the wrong clients for your business, cheap people and price shoppers

Are you attracting broke people and price shoppers – customers who will leave you as soon as they find someone cheaper?

Your marketing should be targeting the right audience. It’s important to understand who your ideal customer is and what they are searching for. One way to do this is by creating a buyer persona. A buyer persona is a virtual character that represents a specific type of customer you want to attract.

I created buyer personas for my own business, and when I did I quickly realized what I was doing wrong with my marketing. I was getting leads from exactly the clients that my marketing was targeting, but I was targeting the wrong ideal clients.

Think very carefully about who you want and need as a client. If you are trying to make more money, targeting clients who can afford your services is the first step. Stop targeting window shoppers, bargain-shoppers, people with a tiny budget, and people who aren’t in the buyer’s phase of their journey.

Instead, work on attracting people who are looking for what you have, can afford your product or service, and are ready to buy.  This might mean targeting an entirely different niche or ideal customer.

3. You’re spending your time on business tasks that don’t make you money.

When you start a business, especially if you’re a solopreneur, you’re in charge of everything – the social media, the bookkeeping, the blogging, marketing, and all the client/customer work. Running a business successfully means you have to learn how to delegate and outsource so that you can work on the tasks that generate revenue.

Start being real with yourself and evaluating where you are wasting your time and energy. Phase-out any tasks you are doing that aren’t making you money. If you can’t find someone to do the task, evaluate whether or not it needs to be done at all.

4 You need to raise your prices. (Don’t skim past this one ladies).

you need to raise your prices

Stop right here. If you’re a female entrepreneur, I have a good feeling you have heard this before. Why? Women struggle with this more than men. As an SEO consultant myself, when I read the numbers on how much men charge for services compared to women, it really made me think.  Men charge 67 percent more for SEO services than women.

These are the excuses women make for why they don’t charge more.

“It’s supply and demand. I don’t have enough clients to begin with. How am I going to charge more?”

“I don’t have enough experience. I need to be better first.”  Or, worse. “I need to build my portfolio. I’ll do this for you for free.”

“Other people are overcharging. I am not that kind of person.”

There are a few reasons that I believe women do this more than men.  It’s the same reason why men are more likely to apply for jobs they’re not qualified for, and women usually apply for jobs only when they feel completely qualified for them. Our mindset is often what holds us back.

If you think to yourself, I wouldn’t pay that much for my services, you are projecting your own insecurities onto your customer. That is what is really holding you back from charging more.

We also feel compassion for people who can’t afford our services and try to accommodate them. These are admirable qualities, but at some point, you have to ask yourself: How much more money could my business make if I was truly working with clients who were the right fit for me? Who valued me enough to pay me what I am worth?

If you know deep down inside that you are undercharging, this is the first thing you need to fix.

5. You’re not tracking your money

Many business owners aren’t great bookkeepers. If you aren’t tracking how much money you’re making and spending, it will be hard to tell if your business is profitable.

Your business could be making money, but you might not have enough cash to pay yourself or your bills. For example, you may make a lot of sales one month, but not get paid on those sales till later.  This is often the case with service-based businesses. This can affect how much money you are able to pay yourself, but you may still have a profitable business.

If your business has outgrown what you can manage by yourself, you might need to consult an accountant or a professional to set up a bookkeeping system for you.  This will give you better control of your business finances and help you determine what you can change to improve your cash flow.

6 You’re in the startup phase.

business startup

Sometimes the reason why your business isn’t making money is simply that you’re just getting started. You might just need a pep talk, badass entrepreneur.  When I started my first business, I didn’t make a single dollar for the first two years. The first check we received was a whopping $21. However, after three years of hard work, we started making money – big money. Sometimes you are actually doing everything right. Sometimes you’re just in the startup phase and your business just needs time to grow.

What to do if you’re business isn’t making money.

Get crystal clear with your goals.

business woman making money

If you’ve been winging things or figuring everything out as you go along, you need to change how you are doing things.  Lack of planning and clear, strategic goals can be the death of many small businesses. Your goals should be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound).

Your goals can’t just be about what you will do, but how you will make money. In other words, goals like “I will post 5 Facebook posts”, or “I will talk to 5 prospects this week”, might be easy to do and track, but it won’t necessarily help your business to make more money.

Create specific financial goals for your business.  Write down how much you will make each month, each week, or even break it down into daily financial goals.  Then determine how you will achieve each goal, and when you will achieve them by.

Get some help.

You might be resistant to getting help. You want to run your business your way, without having someone tell you what to do. That’s probably why you became an entrepreneur in the first place – to be your own boss.   It took me a really long time to realize that every entrepreneur needs a mentor, someone to go to for guidance, support, and advice.

If you’ve ever thought about hiring a business coach, now would be the time to do it. I don’t sell coaching services, so this isn’t me self-promoting. A coach or (business mentor) can make an enormous difference in your business. They can help you set better goals, teach you how to get more clients or higher-paying clients, and be a support system when you need it.

According to a survey by Kabbage, 92 percent of small business owners agree with me on this. Having a mentor directly affects the growth and survival of your business. One of the reasons people like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg were so successful is because they had a mentor.

Make lead generation your #1 priority.

The best way to generate leads in the digital world is through search engine optimization – in other words, being findable in a Google search. While social media is a great marketing tool for promoting your business, Google is the best place to get leads.  These people don’t need to be nurtured or coaxed, they are already on Google looking for you!

If you have no idea how to get your business found in Google, set up a strategy call with me. It doesn’t cost you anything. I can take a look at your website, your search engine ranking, and what you’re currently doing for marketing.  Then we can discuss ideas to help you attract the right clients for your business and get consistent leads from your website.

Drop the time-sucking clients and low-profit products.

frustrated business woman

We’ve all been there.  We all have dealt with low-paying clients that suck up all of your time and drain your energy.  These low-end, easy-to-get clients may be what’s keeping you from making money.  They end up taking up so much of your time that you don’t have time for higher-paying clients.  It ends up being a vicious cycle.

It’s time to evaluate where your time is being spent and whether it is providing you the income you need to grow. It may be difficult to drop low-paying clients, especially if those are the only clients you have. But, by saying no to the wrong clients, you open yourself up to finding the right clients. You’ll never make the money you want (or have the clients you really want to work with) if you aren’t willing to walk away from clients that aren’t right for your business.

Improve your sales skills.

Finally, let’s talk about why you’re selling low-profit products or services. Is it because the only way you know how to sell is by offering discounts, bargaining, or lowering your price?  That’s not sales.  If you want to make more money in your business you need to improve your sales skills.

The sales process is not just transactional, it’s emotional.  When someone contacts you, it’s because they need your help.  They are calling you because they need whatever it is you are selling.  They want you to help them decide what to do. This is where learning more about the sales process – such as asking qualifying questions, explaining the benefits of your product or service, or how to handle objections – can help you make more money in your business.

Sales is a skill that anyone can learn. If you want to be better at it, pick up a book or take a course. Improving your sales skills is one of the best ways to make more money in your business.

On Wednesday Google announced that they will start accepting applications for their third edition of Search Central’s Virtual Unconference taking place on April 27, 2022, from 9:00 AM MDT – 12:00 PM MDT.

What is the Search Central Unconference?

In 2020, Google hosted its first virtual unconference, the Virtual Webmaster Unconference.  This was primarily due to the fact that they could not hold an in-person conference. Just as many other businesses began hosting virtual conferences and conventions, Google also created a virtual event for people in the webmaster and SEO world to connect, collaborate, and talk to each and Googe product teams.

The 2020 unconference was successful so Google brought it back in 2021.  And, now in 2022, they are having their third Search Central Virtual Unconference.  Here’s a recap of the 2021 event from Search Engine Roundtable if you’re interested in learning more about it.

This year’s Unconference will be similar. They will host a collection of group discussions, which will be led by one or two facilitators (either Googlers, Product Experts, or Google community members).

If you are interested in becoming a facilitator you can apply to become a group facilitator. The facilitator’s responsibilities are to make sure that the conversation flows throughout the session and that everyone has a chance to participate in the discussion.  Here are the guidelines for anyone interested in becoming a facilitator. You have until March 23rd to apply.

If you’d like to participate in the Search Central Unconference Registration starts on March 30th at 4 am DST.

If you’d like to participate in the Unconference, spots are limited. Google will begin taking applications for participants on March 30, 2022, at 4 am MDT.  At this point, there is no agenda listed as far as what topics they will be discussing, but based on the previous events it should be interesting.

If you’re a business owner, you need to know how important Google reviews are to your business. They not only help your business establish trust, but they also affect your ranking in Google Maps. In today’s online marketplace, many businesses don’t realize how crucial it is to get their customers to leave them a review. Even when they do know it’s important, many don’t know how to get more Google reviews.

Why are Google reviews so important?

Did you know that 90% of customers read reviews before they call you or send you an email? People use reviews to make decisions just like they used to ask friends for recommendations. In fact, 88% of customers trust reviews as much as a personal recommendation.

Google reviews are often the first thing potential customers see when searching for your product or service. This is why getting your customers to leave you a Google review is so important.

So how do you get more Google reviews for your business?

After researching this topic and experimenting on my own, I will tell you, it’s not as complicated as you think. However, it does require that you make getting more Google reviews a priority for your business so let’s start with that.

Make Google reviews a priority for your business.

If you’re a solopreneur like me, getting Google reviews is all on you. Most small businesses have a team. Even if you have a small team, get your entire team on board with this objective. Once a month, have a meeting to brainstorm ideas for how to get more Google reviews.

Ask your team members to help you with ways to get more Google reviews. Then measure and track your progress. This will allow you to pinpoint the strategies that are working for your business and praise your team for their efforts.

To get your team excited about improving your online presence, you must get them involved. Generic requests for Google reviews are not as effective as personal ones. This is why it’s important for you to get your employees to ask customers to leave a review.

Tips for asking for Google reviews

Ask the right customers.
It might seem like a good idea to ask everyone for a Google review, but Google reviews aren’t a numbers game. You don’t just want to get more reviews; you want great reviews. So before you go crazy asking every single person you’ve ever done business with to leave you a Google review, think about which customers are your happiest customers —the ones who would naturally leave you a good review.

Ask them after they’ve made a second purchase.
You may be tempted to ask a client or customer for a review right after they’ve made a purchase or used your services. But, generally, the best time to get a positive review from a client is when they’ve come back to you a second time. For example, they purchased a second item, called for additional services, or sent a referral your way. This is when you know they are one of your loyal customers. You don’t want “meh” reviews or negative reviews so your best bet is to target your repeat customers.

Make it personal.
Everyone responds better to personal messages and requests. Don’t send a customer a generic automated email. While automation can be helpful when it comes to getting more Google reviews, personal requests are usually more effective. If you send an email be sure to use their name in the subject of the email, and personalize the message. Using someone’s name in an email creates a psychological cue that people are more likely to respond to.

If you want someone to help you out, then start with a compliment. People love compliments. When you tell someone how much you value their business and loyalty, you make them feel important. Then, ask for a favor — if they will help you out and leave you a Google review. Be sure to explain why it’s important and how much you appreciate the business. Be sure to be polite and thank them for their help.

If you ask a customer for a Google review in conversation, follow up with a text or email. If you ask for a review in person, there is a good chance they will forget about it later. You want to make the process easy and convenient for them, so send a follow-up email or text with a link so that they can easily leave a review.

How to Get Even More Google Reviews:

Okay, so asking for reviews is one of the best ways to get Google reviews. However, there are other things a business can do to supercharge the process of getting more Google reviews. One of these is making the process easy, convenient, and easy for your customers to respond to.

Focus on the Why: Why Do people leave positive Google Reviews?

In most cases it’s one of two reasons, you absolutely love the business or they asked you to leave a review.

Most of the tips on how to get more Google reviews tend to focus exclusively on the process of getting reviews but not on why people leave reviews.

I want you to think about when and why you’ve left a Google review for another business. What prompted you to do it? People leave positive reviews in Google Maps very infrequently. It’s much easier to get a negative review than a positive. How often have you left a positive review of a business and why?

So what do you do to get more reviews? Make a strong positive impression on your customers and clients, and ask them for a review!

Make it Easy!

Have you ever told someone you’d leave a Google review and then just not got around to it? I know I am guilty. Even though I know how important it is for their business, even though I like their business, I just don’t get around to it. In order for you to make time to write a review for someone’s business, you have to take a few minutes away from your own busy schedule. And, a lot of us just don’t.

How can you get more people to make time for you? Make it easy for them. If they have to get on Google, search for your business, and then leave a review, well, it might never happen. So, when you ask for a review email or text them with a direct link to your Google Review. This way they can conveniently write a review for you.

How to get the direct link to your Google Reviews form.

Google has recently updated Google My Business. It’s now called Google Business Profiles and it’s easier than ever to get to. If you’ve followed an outdated tutorial on this, you’ll notice you can’t find a direct link to share your Google Review form in your Google Business Profile.

how to share Google review form in Google Business Profile manager

When you click on “Share review form” you can share your link on social media or email, but they don’t provide a quick copy and paste link you can share.

How to request Google reviews through email and social media

It’s now easier to manage your Google Business profile. You can go to it directly in Google. Just do a search for your business and look for your profile on the side of your browser. Scroll down and you’ll see the option Get More reviews.

how to get more reviews from Google search

Click on Get More reviews and copy and paste the link. This link is a shortcut that will take your clients directly to your review form. You want to use this URL when you email customers requesting a Google review.

how to get the share link for your Google reviews form

Follow up on Google Review requests

Do not feel like you are being a pest. People get busy and forget to write your review. Even if you ask nicely, even if your customer loves you, they still might get busy and just forget to leave you a review. This is why you have to follow up. And, you might have to follow up more than once.

Keep a note of people you’ve contacted. You don’t want to be demanding or too annoying but a couple of follow-ups may be needed. If your customer truly loves you they won’t mind you asking a second time. Just make sure you are polite in your messaging and don’t send more than 3 or 4 messages.

Add a QR code or link to your business cards

If you want to boost your Google reviews, you can try this. Add a message on your business card that says “Leave us a Google review”. You can add a link or a QR code that links your customer directly to your Google review form. When you talk to your customers, hand them your card and ask them to leave you a Google review.

Add a note in your email signature

One of the easiest ways to get more reviews is to add a link in your email signature. This way every time someone gets an email from you, they are reminded that you’d like a Google review.

Add a link on your website

Add a link to your Google reviews form on your website. You can add an image to the bottom of your site that says leave us a Google review. Or add a link to your Google review form on your testimonials page. This way your customers can leave you a Google review directly from your website.

What do you do if you get negative reviews?

Look, it’s bound to happen. Even if you have an excellent business somebody might leave you a negative review. Before you panic, remember that people read both the negative and positive reviews. They look at how you respond to them, more than the number of stars you have.

If you get a negative review, your potential customers are also looking to see how you handle it. Believe it or not, by responding professionally, courteously, and calmly, you can actually earn new customers. People may admire how you handled a bad review and find you more credible because of it.

DuckDuckGo manipulates search engine results in Russia. On Wednesday, DuckDuckGo’s CEO Gabriel Weinberg tweeted that the search engine would be down-ranking Russian disinformation websites in their search results.

While Russia continues to invade Ukraine, many U.S. companies are cutting ties with Russia. The Russian government is blocking social media websites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. As Russian citizens seek information that is not controlled by their own government, many are turning to VPNs to gain access to the websites their government has blocked.

This has created a war on information in Russia. Russian citizens are struggling to get unbiased, accurate information. And, U.S. companies are upset about the amount of propaganda and disinformation the government is spreading to its people.

To help, U.S.-based search engines have stepped in to control the spread of disinformation in Russia. On February 28th, Microsoft’s Bing search engine announced that they would be de-ranking state-sponsored sites in their search results.

On Thursday, DuckDuckGo’s CEO Gabriel Gabriel Weinberg followed suit tweeting that DuckDuckGo would be joining the effort to #StandWithUkraine by down-ranking Russian disinformation sites in their search engine.

This has prompted a major backlash by users of the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo. They’ve been tweeting their frustrations with the company, using the hashtag #DuckDuckGone. Many of DuckDuckGo users have also tweeted that they are switching to the search engine Brave, another privacy-focused search engine, because of DuckDuckGo’s decision to manipulate search engine results.

The company said in a statement to Protocol, that “down-ranking is different from censorship.
And explained their position saying, “The primary utility of a search engine is to provide access to accurate information.”

Why are DuckDuckGo users so unhappy?

While DuckDuckGo is known for being the privacy-search engine, that’s not the only reason why people use DuckDuckGo. Many of the search engine’s users made the switch to DuckDuckGo because they liked the fact that DuckDuckGo delivered unbiased results. DuckDuckGo fans, like myself, love the search engine because they don’t manipulate search engine results like Google does.

Up until now, DuckDuckGo did not filter unpopular search results or down-rank websites that they viewed as providing disinformation. They allowed users to decide for themselves what was fact and what was “misinformation.” Although DuckDuckGo states that this is not censorship, many DuckDuckGo users disagree.

Conservatives and Libertarians made DuckDuckGo their search engine because they don’t like the way Google alters search results to show you what they think you want to see. Also, many believe Google censors political queries and information Google deems to be misinformation.

These same users also criticize Facebook for deciding for them what is fact and what is misinformation. And, now DuckDuckGo, the search engine for anti-censorship fans, is doing the same thing.

When a search engine gets involved with political censorship, even for good reasons, it should be prepared for a backlash.

DudkDuckGo logo

Is DuckDuckGo becoming yet another Big Tech company?

DuckDuckGo has made a few moves recently that have turned off its users. Some have accused the search engine of “adopting the censorship policies” of Big Tech.

Along with de-ranking websites, DuckDuckGo is following Facebook’s strategy of telling users what’s fact and what’s “disinformation”, by providing information boxes at the top of DuckDuckGo’s Russian search results to highlight what is actual facts and what is disinformation.

This is what has prompted Conservatives who despise Facebook’s fact-checking to leave the search engine. DuckDuckGo’s user base is not a fan of censorship, no matter what form it takes. They believe DuckDuckGo is now in fact censoring, even though they say it’s not the same, by deciding for its users which information is “accurate”.

US citizens are fed up with Big Tech manipulating search engines and social media. They are now worried that DuckDuckGo, a search engine that claims to be different than Google, is doing the exact same things that Google does. In order for a search engine to be unbiased, they can’t intentionally manipulate search results – even for humanitarian reasons.

So, DuckDuckGo fans what do you think?

As many of you know, I am a big fan of DuckDuckGo. However, I have to admit I am not thrilled with DuckDuckGo right now. My blog post Why DuckDuckGo is Better than Google is one of my most popular blog posts This move and the fact that DuckDuckGo has pushed for more government regulation of Big Tech companies, has made me pause and rethink how I feel about DuckDuckGo.

If you are a DuckDuckGo fan, what do you think? I love talking about search engines and would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

One of the most challenging aspects of SEO is link building. If you’ve ever done cold email outreach, you know how tough it is to get someone to give you a backlink. Hey buddy I’ve got this really fantastic blog post, how bout you link to me… It’s a pain in the butt.

Here’s the good news, HARO is one of the best ways to build high-authority links to your website without begging, spamming, or coming up with that stellar “linkable asset”. And the best news, HARO link building is easy.

HARO or Help a Reporter Out connects journalists with sources. It’s a great way to get publicity and backlinks. If you’re in the SEO business, HARO link building is one way that you can get awesome backlinks for yourself and your clients.

I have been using HARO for a few years and have been featured on GoDaddy, UpCity, Lifewire, and many other websites. If you’ve never heard of HARO, I am going to explain what HARO is and how anyone can use it for link building. So let’s get into how to use HARO for backlinks.

What is HARO (Help a Reporter Out)?

In 2008, Peter Shankman created a Facebook group to help reporters find sources for stories. At the time, journalists were having trouble finding experts and sources to interview. His Facebook group was so successful, that he moved it to a mailing list to make it more useful. Today, HARO is one of the largest PR companies of its kind.

In 2010, HARO was acquired by Vocus, Inc, a public relations software company. Then in 2014, Vocus, Inc merged with Cision, Inc. This is the HARO we know today. Although HARO, has a few competitors now, it continues to be a widely used tool journalists use to find experts to quote in their stories.

In the past, businesses had to hire a publicist to get media coverage. Now, anyone can send a pitch to journalists using HARO. It’s completely free for everyone to use. They also have premium accounts for people who are serious about pitching on HARO, but for the average business owner, a free account is sufficient.

That’s a little on the history of HARO, but how does HARO actually work.

How to Use Haro

When I first heard about HARO, I didn’t really get what it was or how to use it. I signed up for an account, but it took me a while to understand how to use it. So if you’re interested in using HARO, the first step is to create an account.

Step 1: Create a HARO account

how to sign up to use HARO

Creating a HARO account only takes a few minutes. Go to helpareporter.com. Read over the HARO guidelines before you get started. Then click on Sign up and start your account.

Step 2: Select your account type and email list preference.

Select Source to get email queries from journalists using HARO

Once you’re signed up, select your account type. To be a source there are no special requirements, other than that you follow the HARO source guidelines. However, if you want to participate as a journalist, your website must have a Similarweb ranking of 1 million or less.

select the HARO lists you'd like to participate in

From your account profile, you can select the type of queries you want to receive. These are my selections. Choose the lists that make the most sense for your business. I typically just read the master list because I am checking HARO for myself and clients. I recommend checking the Master List even if you are subscribed to other lists. Sometimes there’s a query that isn’t in your niche but still makes sense for you to reply to.

You will receive emails three times a day, Monday through Friday at 5:35 a.m., 12:35 p.m., and 5:35 EST with queries from journalists that look something like this.

screenshot of HARO queries

Step 3: Skim the queries and reply to ones you’re interested in and qualified to answer.

There’s a lot of debate over which HARO pitches to answer. To decide whether or not you are a good source for the journalist, read through the journalist’s requirements before you reply. They usually provide criteria on who they’d like to hear from and also who they don’t want to hear from. Don’t waste a journalist’s time (or yours) by replying to a query you’re not qualified for.

Step 4: Send your pitch.

Follow the journalist’s instructions. A journalist will often tell you how many sentences they are looking for. They might also include specific questions for you to answer. Always keep your email short and to the point. I aim for no more than 3-6 sentences in a pitch. Include your name, title, and a link to your website in your pitch.

If they ask, provide a link to high-quality versions of your headshot. And include a short author bio that they can use in their story.

Then wait. Sometimes, it will be a couple of months before you hear a reply. Not all journalists email you when they use you as a source. You may need to check your backlinks to find out when your responses are used.

HARO Link Building – How I use HARO to get High-Authority Backlinks

When I first started using HARO, I was inconsistent, and my pitches didn’t get used very often. That’s when I read about the Go Hard at HARO challenge published on the Content Factory. Check out Kari’s post. I think it will inspire you to try it yourself.

Now I check HARO consistently every day and send pitches regularly. This is the best way to get results. It does take time to write a quality pitch that a journalist will actually use, but it’s still a whole lot more effective than email outreach and link begging. Here are my best tips for getting backlinks from HARO.

Set an alarm to check for HARO emails
HARO sends pitches three times a day at 5:35 a.m., 12:35 p.m., and 5:35 EST. Set an alarm to go off 3 times a day to remind you to check your email.

When it comes to getting backlinks, the early bird really does get the worm. Keep in mind that there HARO has close to a million users. That means these journalists may get hundreds of responses to sort through. The odds of them scrolling through all of them are slim, so get your pitch in early.

Check all three emails every day.
I recommend you check all three emails every day. The morning HARO emails are often the most important queries to reply to. You might be tempted to skip the later emails. While they generally include the same queries that were sent in the morning, there are often different queries sent later in the day. Don’t miss an opportunity by skipping one. Some of my best pitches were replies to evening queries.

Pitch to as many HARO queries as possible.
I’ve read other marketers suggest that you should only reply to one or two HARO queries a day or that you should just focus on the ones you can answer quickly and easily. I disagree. Just like sales, pitching to HARO is often a numbers game. The more you pitch, the higher your chances are of getting your pitch published. Not to mention, practice makes perfect. The more you make HARO a habit, the better you’ll get at it. This doesn’t mean you should answer questions you’re not an expert on, but if you see a good query pitch it.

How to write better HARO pitches that reporters want to use

Skip the long intros and bragging.
There are a lot of opinions out there on how to write an intro for HARO. Some people say that you should name-drop other media outlets where you have been featured. Others say to keep your intro short and get to the point. I agree with this approach.

I don’t name-drop in my intros. I only mention my background and history if it’s relevant. The reporter is looking for great quotes, not an ego trip. In my opinion, your quote should sell itself. I usually write a short intro about myself explaining that I own a digital marketing agency in Albuquerque.

Make your pitch unique and interesting.
If you’re not bringing something new to the table, there is no reason to pitch a reporter. They can simply Google common tips and advice. They are looking for expert insight or something of value to add to their story. If you can’t come up with it, pass on it. Even if you can articulate common knowledge in a more interesting way, your pitch will stand out.

Take your time writing a pitch
One of the most frustrating aspects of pitching to HARO is that most of the time your pitches won’t get used. That doesn’t mean you should rush through them. When I see a query I am really interested in, I open a new document and start writing my pitch. I never send an email directly from my email. By putting it in a separate document, I can work on and revise my pitch. I have spent as long as an hour writing a HARO pitch before. While that may seem like a lot of time when you consider the cost of acquiring a backlink, it’s really not.

Little secret: Use an AI writing tool
When I first heard about AI writing tools, I thought I would never use one. However, one day I decided to try it. I am glad that I did. When I get stuck on how to word something, I copy and paste what I have written into my Go Copy writing assistant. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t. But if you write a lot of pitches, having an AI assistant can help you to write better pitches and respond faster.

Use Grammarly
This might seem like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised at how many people don’t proofread their emails. Run every HARO query through Grammarly. Then read through it again to make sure you don’t have any grammar or spelling errors.

Condense your pitch, the shorter the better.
Most of the time, you should be able to write a sentence or two that answers the journalist’s question. However, if the question is more complicated, you can write more. The reporter isn’t looking for you to write the story for them though. They are looking for quotes that can be used in their article. Keep this in mind when you craft your pitch.

Practice, practice, practice
Just like anything in life, the more you practice something, the better you get at it. Every day, try to improve your pitches. Compare the pitches that are published with the ones that are not. Make a note of any patterns. For example, when I pitch to SEO topic queries, my quotes get used more often. My HARO pitches, and writing in general, have improved over the last two years simply because I practice writing regularly.

Track your progress
The old saying, “what gets measured, gets improved,” is true. Keep track of how many pitches you send and how many get published. This will give you a clear idea of your ROI on your efforts. You can check the number of pitches and the response to them by going to HARO. Then click on pitches.

things you've pitched on HARO

Pay attention to reporter feedback.
I was quoted in the pitch “Favorite design software”. They even called me for an interview. Sometimes the reporter will provide feedback on the status of your pitch, but most of the time they don’t. Still, check your HARO dashboard periodically. You can see sometimes the reporter will give you feedback. Even when it’s negative feedback, it can help you to improve your pitch.

Effective HARO Link Building Requires Time, Consistency, and Commitment

At first, I felt like HARO was using up a lot of my time, but I’m glad that I stuck with it. I wrote pitches, they didn’t get used. I wrote more, and still nothing. If you go into this understanding that most of your pitches won’t get used, you’ll be less discouraged. Don’t expect every pitch to work out, just keep plugging away at it.

HARO is an amazing opportunity to build relationships with other digital marketers and boost your website’s traffic. Some of my best backlinks and relationships with other digital marketers have come from HARO. Once they use your pitch, they may invite you to write guest posts or contribute to their blog. Consider HARO an investment in your link-building strategy, and put in the time, consistency, and commitment. This is the best way to get better at HARO link building.

Whether you have a web design and SEO business like I do, or any other type of business, the goal of your website is to get people to take an action. This can be to sign up for your email list, to contact you, or to make a purchase. The best way to accomplish this is to use a call to action (CTA). This post will discuss what a CTA is and exactly how to create an effective call to action.

If you’ve heard the term “call to action” you probably understand what it means, but creating a call to action that’s actually effective is tougher than it sounds. Most websites don’t do a great job at this. Have you ever visited a website and seen a button that said “learn more” or “get in touch”? How often do you actually click on the button?

Before you can create an effective call to action, you need to understand what a call to action is supposed to do.

What is a call to action (CTA)?

A call to action is an element in your content or web design that encourages someone to take an action. If you’ve ever taken a sales class you know that making a sale involves asking for the order. It’s one of the most important parts of making a sale, but the part most salespeople struggle with.

A call to action serves the same purpose on a website. Once the person visits the page, you want them to take an action. The call to action is the method you use to get them to take the next step. A call to action can be in the form of a button, text, an image, or a hyperlink. Any time you produce a piece of content, it should include a call to action in some form.

A good call to action is especially important if you are doing any type of PPC advertising. A great landing page with an effective call to action can make all the difference in how you’re ad performs.

There are a few things you need to know to create a great call to action: where to place the call to action, what type of call to action to use, and how to evaluate its effectiveness.

How to create an effective Call to action

If you’ve read other articles on the best place to put a call to action, you may have read a lot of different answers. There is no right way to do this for every website. However, one of the best places to put a call to action is that the top of your page.

I always have a link to my phone number at the top of my website. This is where customers generally look for a contact number. I try to make it easy to find so I have it in several places on my website.

Where to place a call to action

Above the fold

You should have at least one call to action above the fold on your website. On my website, I have my phone number with the words Call and Get started next to it. I also have a “schedule a consultation” button at the top of my main pages.

In several places throughout your main pages

I create a call to action in several strategic spots on all of my main pages. One of the most frustrating things for buyers is trying to find a way to contact you or buy. I make it easy by having a call to action that’s easy to find no matter where you’re at on any of my main pages. You’ll notice all of my main service pages have an easy-to-fill-out contact form and buttons to schedule a consultation.

In your blog posts

This is one of the things I see many SEO companies get wrong. They provide blogging as part of their services, but they don’t include a call to action in the blog. If you are fortunate enough to get a visitor to your blog post, you want them to take any action or at the very least be able to easily find your phone number.

Some examples of ways to include a call to action in your blog posts are to ask your readers to leave a comment, sign up for your newsletter, download your lead magnet, or follow you on social media.

What type of call to action should you use?

Which type of call to action you should use depends on the content and your website. I use buttons, text links, and in-house advertisements. You’ll notice that all of my blog posts have some information about me, my experiences, and all of my services. There is a newsletter sign-up on every one of my blog posts, on all of my pages, and a form at the top of every page.

I think it is best to use buttons, text links, and images on each of your pages. There are pros and cons to each type of call to action. For example, people are more likely to click on a link within the text of an article than links anywhere else. I try to include text links in my articles to my main services pages.

Buttons may grab attention easier than text links though, so I also include bright bold “let’s talk” buttons on most of my important pages. While you may see guides telling you the wording of your call to action is super important. I think the most important part of a call to action is getting the content on the page right. If you do a great job positioning your services in the text of your pages and posts, your visitor will look for the “let’s talk” or “get in touch” button.

How to make your call to action stand out

Use bright colors

The thing about the call to action is that people are visual creatures. The wording on your call to action is not as important as what it looks like. I find that creating a bright attention-grabbing button works better than a dull black or white button. This is why all of my buttons are bright pink or bright green. I have found that using colors that attract attention performs better.

Add a shadow

Add a shadow around your CTA buttons to make them pop. You might also want to use a high-contrast hover color. For example, I contrast my bright pink and green colors with a white hover color.

Make your CTA large

A lot of websites use really small generic-looking buttons. I make all of my CTA buttons big. You can’t miss them whether you are viewing them on desktop or mobile. Since these are the buttons I want you to see, I make sure they are scattered throughout my page and easy to spot and click on.

Experiment to Create the Most Effective Call to Action

I’ll give you a quick tip to get create the best call to action. You should always experiment. Check your analytics frequently, and play around with different placements, colors, and types of CTAs. I find that when I update my website and improve my CTA, I get more leads. You’ll get more customers to sign up or contact you when you make it easy for them.

Last week, I received an email from Google, like many other business owners who have a Google Business Profile. The email said, “Take Action: Understand how new legislation could harm your business”.  I opted in to receive updates on potential legislation that would affect my business.

Google sent email to business users cautioning about Google legislation

After receiving Google’s email, I discovered three blog posts on the topic of the email. The first was on Search Engine Journal, which linked to a blog post from BillHartzer.com. Then I found two more blog posts this morning, here and here.

After reading all three blog posts, I felt it was important to speak up about the concerns I have about all of the Google and  Big Tech antitrust legislation. Because I am in the SEO business, I think I have a better understanding of how Google works and why the anti-Google legislation is concerning.

All three blog posts insinuated that Google’s use of data somehow supports the need for legislation. Yet, none of the bloggers really discussed the legislation or why Google and small business owners should be concerned about it.

Does Google’s Email to Business Owners Indicate a Need for Regulation?

I do not believe Google misused its data when it chose to send out a caution to business owners. This is not abusing its power or an automatic signal that it should be regulated. It’s what any company would do if laws were being proposed that would impact the consumers that use their products or services.

There is currently a slew of bills in the House and Senate that were supposedly written to tackle growing “public concerns” about the size and influence of the major technology companies. While lawmakers say these bills are intended to curb the growth and power of these “Big Tech” companies, many of the bills do not clearly explain how they will actually affect consumers. Additionally, they aren’t really about protecting consumers. They are about controlling the growth and size of major technology companies simply because they are big.

Are Google’s Business Practices Harming Consumers?

The purpose of antitrust laws is to protect consumers, not to protect other businesses.  While Google is, no doubt, a large, powerful company that dominates the search engine market, its search engine is free. Most of their Google products are free. And, if anything, their company’s “vast resources” and services, benefits consumers and small business owners.

One of the bills in question, The American Choice and Innovation Online Act (H.R. 3816) is vaguely written, with not a lot of clarity on what it will mean to consumers if it is passed.  Small business owners who rely on Google products such as Google Maps, Gmail, Google Docs, Google calendars, and Google’s search engine should be concerned.

How will Google Legislation Affect SEO and Small Businesses?

Anyone who has been in the SEO business knows that when Google’s algorithm changes it affects every business owner that’s findable in its search engine. What will it mean to your business if Google is no longer able to display its map at the top of search results?  How will this affect your small business?

While these might seem like minor inconveniences, the biggest concern I have is handing the tech industry over to bureaucrats who don’t even understand how it works. This is especially troublesome when the solution to the majority of Big Government’s problem with Big Tech companies is completely in the hands of the public. If you don’t like Big Google you can use another search engine, use another email provider, use another calendar, or use another map.

Bill Barzer claims that 90 percent of users choose Google because they don’t have any other choice. This is certainly not true. Consumers do have choices, and they choose Google. If everyone who claims they don’t like the way Google operates stopped using their products the problem would be solved. We don’t need “Big Government” to take down “Big Google”

Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook are leaders in innovation. By clipping their wings, you aren’t helping consumers or American small businesses. You are simply reigning in what you can’t control.

Before you take the side of Big Government, simply because you don’t like Big Google, you should read the bills. You don’t have to like Big Google, but regulating them isn’t the answer.  Before you applaud Congress for creating bills to look out for your best interest, please read through all of the bills for yourself.

Expand on existing blog topics

If you have written content on your blog on everything you can think of, here’s what you can do. First, go through all of your existing content and see where you can expand or update. Do you have a blog post that is generating traffic? Can you expand on that topic? Think about any blog idea that is closely related to that topic.

Use Google News

One of the best ways to get fresh content that people are searching for is to use Google News. Google News provides stories on current news topics on just about every subject. So if you have a car insurance blog, go to Google News and search for cars or car insurance to see the latest news. Then write a blog post about it.

Write local blog topics

If you are a local insurance agent, you want visitors from your local area to find you. Writing blog posts about things that are going on in your community can help you bring in local traffic. This can also help you when it comes to local SEO. Having informative blog posts about events, organizations, or activities in your local area are great topics for your blog.

Visit a completely unrelated blog

One of the ways I generate new content ideas for my blog is by visiting other blogs. Sometimes they are on completely different topics. But, here’s the thing. When you visit a million blogs on insurance, your brain will go to mush. After seeing the same generic topics over and over on every blog, you may start to ask yourself is there really anything new to blog about?

Yes, there is! You can always spin a topic or come up with something interesting. For me, one of the best ways to do that is to check out exciting blogs on other topics. Look at the titles of the posts. What gets your attention? Take their title ideas and turn them into an insurance blog topic.

Do you need help with your insurance blog?

If you are burnt out on writing blog posts or you just don’t have time for blogging, reach out to me. I provide affordable blog content and social media content for insurance agents. If you are just learning about SEO, you may be trying to decide which SEO plugin to use on your blog. Hopefully, you are using WordPress for your blog because it is the best platform for bloggers – and for SEO in general. All in One is an SEO plugin that works with WordPress. If you want to know how to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO, this post will walk you through the installation process and how to use it.

Why use All in One SEO?

All in One SEO is a WordPress plugin that helps you rank better in Google, Bing, or Yahoo. It makes on-page SEO easy. Once you install the plugin, it will tell you if your blog post is optimized for search engines and make recommendations if it’s not. If you are new to SEO, using a plugin like All in One will make learning SEO much easier. You just install the plugin, type in your focus keyphrase, and it will tell you what you need to do to search engine optimize your blog post.

Installing All in One SEO

Before I show you how to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO, I’ll show you how to install it and tell you about some of the features I like. I have used all of the major SEO plugins for WordPress and they each have their advantages. Installing All in One is very easy though. Just go to the plugins section of your WordPress dashboard and click on add new.

How to install All in One SEO plugin

Then do a search for All in One SEO. Install it and click on activate. Once the plugin is activated, you’ll see that it has its own dashboard. You can locate it under the left-hand sidebar of your WordPress dashboard.

When you click on the All in One SEO dashboard, you’ll notice you don’t see an SEO Site Score. In order for All in One to score your website, you’ll need to connect it with All in One. Use the setup wizard to connect your site and configure all your SEO settings. This wizard makes configuring AIO SEO easy. Just click on the wizard and follow the steps in order.

Use the All in One wizard to set up the plugin

Like Rank Math, All In One SEO gives you the option to import all your SEO settings from Yoast. (If you are currently using Yoast.) If you are using Yoast, which is what I started with too, you will want to check out Rank Math and All in One so you can decide which you like best.

Once it’s installed, you’ll see your overall SEO score. My overall SEO score is 82, which is excellent according to AIO.

Some of the features I like about All in One SEO

AlO SEO Audit Checklist

All in One provides a free SEO audit for your website. As an SEO consultant, this feature is a really valuable tool for anyone who doesn’t have the budget for a premium SEO tool like SEMrush. It analyzes your website and tells you everything you need to fix with your on-site SEO. (P.S. this is not an audit of Badass Web Goddess)

SEO analysis and audit with All in One SEO plugin

All in One Headline Analyzer

All in One comes with its own Headline Analyzer. If you are using another plugin like Monster Insights, All in One SEO can replace that plugin. It essentially does the same thing. For this blog post, I got the same score for my title on AIO and Monster insights.

AIO Competitor Analyzer

This is my favorite feature with All In One. This feature alone makes it worth checking out. Do you want to see how your website’s SEO compares with your competitor’s? Check out the competitor analysis. If you are an SEO professional, you can even use this to evaluate your clients’ websites.

Now that you have All in One SEO installed let’s get into the nitty-gritty of how to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO.

How to Optimize a Blog Post with All in One SEO

I am going to walk you through how I optimize a blog post with All in One SEO. Whether I am optimizing a post with AIO or another SEO plugin, I always write my blog posts in Google Docs first. I write a lot of SEO content for clients, and they each use different plugins, but the fundamentals of on-page SEO are the same regardless of which plugin you use.

Pro Tip: Choose your keyword before you write or optimize a blog post

Before you start writing your post, do some keyword research and decide which keyword (or keywords) you are going to optimize the blog post for. It’s much easier to work keywords into your post as you write it than having to add them later.

For blogs, it’s best to go with a long-tail keyword. This means it’s 3-5 words long, although I often optimize for keyword phrases that are much longer. For example, in this post, I optimized for the title of this post “How to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO” which is a pretty long keyword phrase, but I find longer keyword phrases perform better.

Write your blog post

The first step is to write your blog post. When you write your blog post don’t worry too much about SEO. Just write naturally. When you copy and paste your blog post into WordPress, then you can optimize it.

Once you’ve completely written your post, go back through it and add headers (or subheadings). If you write with an outline (which I highly recommend), you may have already done this. However, you want to go through your blog post and make sure all your headers have keywords in them. If you have a lot of headers that aren’t using your keywords, change them to bolded text instead. The headers in your blog post tell Google what the page is about.

Once you’ve completed your blog post, copy and paste it into WordPress and see what your score is. If you’ve been doing SEO for a while you may have a great score without having to do too much tweaking.

Now Let’s Optimize Your Blog Post with All In One SEO

Once you copy and paste your blog post into WordPress, you can optimize it. All in One is easy to use, although I did find it a little more confusing than Rank Math and Yoast. When you first enter your post you’ll see a score, but this score is based on your title and text. Once you tell All In One what keyword you are optimizing the blog post for, it will tell you how well it is optimized for that particular keyword.

Enter your Focus Keyphrase

Adding focus keyphrase to show you how to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO

On the right-hand side of your WordPress post editor, you’ll see all the options for optimizing your post with All in One. Enter your keyword phrase. For this post, AIO gave me a score of 64. This is because I entered a longer keyword phrase than they recommend. I still have an overall score of 83 and I like my keyword phrase. If you want a higher score, follow their recommendations to get a perfect score.

One thing you might like about AIO is that it integrates with Semrush. This is a great feature for SEO consultants and professional bloggers. It analyzes your content and makes keyword suggestions for your content. You will need a pro-version of All in One to use this feature.

You will see an option to add your focus keyword in the right-hand sidebar of your WordPress post editor. At the top of the sidebar, you will see a score. Even if you haven’t added a keyword, Rank Math will give you a score based on the title of the post and the content. It’s generally a really low score. Once you type your keyword into the box that says focus keyword, you’ll see the score change. I used the keyword “how to optimize a blog post with All in One SEO”.

Next Edit the snippet

how to edit the snippet in All in One SEO

The next step in optimizing your blog post is editing the snippet. This is where you can change the SEO title of your post and the meta description. The meta description is not all that important with Google, but it can improve your click-through rate, which can indirectly improve your SEO.

Make sure that your title and meta description contains your keywords and that both are written in a way that entices a reader to click through to your website.

Check Basic SEO

To see how well your post is optimized, check the Basic SEO. If you have any issues that need to be fixed All In One will tell you. My basic SEO is excellent with the exception of the length of my keyword phrase.

Check the basic SEO with All in One
  • Focus keyphrase in content
  • Focus keyphrase in introduction
  • Focus keyphrase in URL
  • Focus keyphrase length
  • Content length
  • Internal links
  • External links

Ideally, you want every bullet to turn green. One thing I don’t like about All In One is that it doesn’t tell you what your keyword density is or how long your post needs to be. When I added the words “what do dogs eat” into this blog post and then added it as my keyphrase, All in One gave me a green light – clearly, the blog post has nothing to do with dogs. It’s also much more generous with your SEO score than other plugins like Yoast and Rank Math.

Check the Title Score

All in One SEO title score

All in One will let you know if you have a search-engine-optimized title. It also analyzes whether or not it is likely to get clicked on. This is one feature I like about All In One. You don’t need to use a separate plugin to evaluate your title

Check the readability score

All in One Readability score

This feature is similar to Yoast’s readability score. Things to keep in mind when you’re writing your blog posts. Make sure your sentences are not too long or complex. I know this makes writing more interesting, but when it comes to SEO you want to write a reading level that everyone can read.

Also, make sure your paragraphs are broken up with headers. Breaking up your text with headers will improve your readability score. You don’t want any of your text to be longer than 300 words without a header tag.

What do I think about All in One?

Of all the SEO plugins, I have used All in One is my least favorite. It has some handy features so if you are already good at SEO, this is not a bad plugin. But, for on-page SEO it’s not a plugin I would use or recommend.

What the Duck All in One

Check out my blog post titled “What the Duck All in One” This post is completely filled with duplicated filler text and the content doesn’t contain my keyword phrase in it at all and AIO still gave it a score of 81. While it does point out all the recommendations for basic SEO, the score is misleading. If you are new to SEO, I recommend starting with Rank Math. This will give you a much more accurate score for how you are doing with on-page SEO.

Not only am I a badass entrepreneur, but I also have bipolar disorder. When I started Badass Web Goddess, one of my goals for my blog was to inspire women and entrepreneurs who struggle with mental illness. It’s a lot more challenging to run a business when you have ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety, or depression. You see, a lot of us entrepreneurs are “crazy”.

If you are in need of a pep talk or need some encouragement, here is my pep talk for the entrepreneur. Yeh, that’s you, badass.

My Pep talk for the Entrepreneur

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 1: Being an entrepreneur is stressful. If it was easy everyone would do it.

If you are feeling burned out, discouraged, if you’re not making enough money, it is easy to think about quitting. Quitting on the business, or quitting on life altogether. When you’re busting your bootie to get your business off the ground and the world around you is watching YouTube and Netflix, playing on social media, and chilling, you might just want to join them.

And then what?

Running a business is stressful. It’s like being on a roller coaster. One minute you’re on top of the world, the next you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to survive.

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 2: Stop freaking out!

stressed out entrepreneur freaking out

Yesterday I searched for blog posts on “SEO is a stressful business”, “the SEO business is stressful” and several variations of this keyword. Apparently, I am the only honest SEO consultant.  The SEO business and any other successful business is going to be stressful.

The stress isn’t going to go away. You’re always going to have more to do than you can do. You’re always going to be asking yourself, how do I do this? You’re always going to be wondering when you’re going to get the next sale, the next client, or how you’re going to pay the next bill?  One foot in front of the other, that’s how.

Time management and stress management are critical skills when you’re an entrepreneur. Yeh, we tend to thrive on stress, I know I do. If you learn how to manage it, you won’t “freak out” or “stress out” so much. That freakout time could be better spent growing your business

Maybe you’re stressing out as you read this. What is something you can do right now to relieve the stress and tension you are feeling?

For me, music, exercise, and writing help me to alleviate stress.  If you are feeling stressed as you read this, I challenge you to stop right now and do something about it.

Go play that music loud, run up and down the stairs, go for a drive, write in your journal, phone a friend.  Do what you need to do to get the stress out, and get back at it.  Hey, I’m serious. Stop reading this now and go do something that calms you down.  Then come back and finish reading this.

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 3: Reframe Your Stress into Sucess

When you take on a new client, a big project, or launch a new product, you’re probably going to have anxiety. When I started my business, every time I talked to a new prospect, I would have an internal freak out.  If you’ve ever taken something on and thought to yourself, what am I getting myself into, you probably relate.  This feeling is common to entrepreneurs.  Just remind yourself the anxiety is normal.

Someone told me once that you should only take a job if you are qualified for it. If I followed that advice I would still be working in retail. Entrepreneurs challenge themselves and learn to do what they are not qualified for. Before you overthink this, I don’t mean agree to be an electrical engineer when you know nothing about electricity. I mean don’t be afraid to try things you haven’t done before.

When you feel overwhelmed, remember your vision. Can see your dream car, your dream home — whatever it is that drives you? When you take on a new challenge, envision success. See yourself succeeding in this new client. This is not overwhelming. This is exciting! I have a big client. Wow, let’s rock this!

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 4: Failure is part of success, If you’re not failing you’re not growing.

A badass entrepreneur shooting hoops

I read this many times before, but when I’m experiencing yet another failure — when my sales don’t pan out, when I lose a client, or when an investment doesn’t pay off — I remember to reframe my perspective. Practice makes perfect. You aren’t going to get the ball in the hoop every time. So, when you are having a bad day, remember to reframe your “failure” and think about how your failure is helping you grow.

If you’re not failing, you’re not growing. Every time you fail at something you get stronger and wiser. The people who quit never grow. Successful entrepreneurs (<<—P.S. I love this guy) are successful because they failed a lot. Failing is part of the process. If you can think of each failure as part of your success, failing isn’t scary anymore.

The most successful people are those who have failed over and over. If you have recently failed at something, don’t feel discouraged. This is how you grow and become the badass entrepreneur you’re meant to be.

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 5: Stop panicking and get back to your to-do list

If you have ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, or Anxiety you know exactly what I’m talking about. What do you do when you’re stressed? You panic and distract yourself.  You procrastinate or try to come up with a new, easier, or faster way to do things.

The solution is right in front of you. Get back to your list.  There is no shortcut to success. There is no magic wand or cheat code. If you want it, you have to work at it. So if you’re looking for the shortcut, stop it. Go look at the goals you set for today and get back to working on them.

The happiest entrepreneurs are those who are productive and making progress towards their goals. When you feel like you are getting nowhere, it gets discouraging. Remember it’s a long game. There aren’t any shortcuts up the ladder.  So stop panicking and get back to work on your list!

Entrepreneur Pep Talk 6: You might feel lonely, but you’re not alone

every entrepreneur feels lonely sometimes and needs a pep talk

Being an entrepreneur is hard and sometimes makes you feel incredibly lonely. We take risks and do things differently.  There may be nobody to talk to, including your partner, your friends, and your family. They might not support you. They might not understand why you do what you do, and they may think they know how to run your business better than you. This can make you feel isolated and alone.

When I feel discouraged, I talk to another entrepreneur. My regular friends don’t know what it’s like to run a business. They have don’t really understand how stressful it is or about the highs and the lows that go with it. So when you need a pep talk, call an entrepreneur friend. If you don’t have any entrepreneur friends, read a book, an article, or a podcast from another entrepreneur. They often have just the right words to cheer you up and keep you going.
