Here’s the Thing

Mainly featured in the pages of Fantastic Four, the monstrous bruiser that is The Thing is as classic of a character as you could name. Benjamin J. Grimm first appeared way back in 1961, and though he’s been mainly a team guy in the decades since, he has had more than a handful of solo books too.

Those weren’t just mini-series’ either, as Marvel Two-in-One and The Thing ran for several years apiece. Technically there were more runs that weren’t necessarily meant to be mini’s, but ended before they reached a dozen issues, so… yeah we’re counting ’em as limited series’.

What we’re talking about today though, is definitely a mini-series, and one that carries that simple “The Thing” title. It won’t be a tie-in or riff on the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps film either, as Marvel says the new comic will present “a timeless, action-packed adventure for one comic books’ most beloved icons.”

From the creative team of Tony Fleecs and Leonard Kirk, The Thing #1 (of 5) lands on the racks on March 5th, 2025. Look for a few cover options to come along with it too, with the standard hailing from Nick Bradshaw, and a pair of variants from Greg Land.

The freebies cometh

It is kind of hard to believe that Free Comic Book Day is already being talked about, but that is indeed the case. The yearly freebie day at comics shops, which serves up a select list of specially-made titles from across the industry, is May 3rd, 2025.

It’s once again looking like fans will find a solid selection of free books to take home too, as Marvel Comics just unveiled its offerings. The list includes the likes of the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Spider-Man, and more, for a total of five titles will be up for grabs at participating retailers. There sounds like there’ll be more as well, but Marvel isn’t set to say what just yet.

The publisher fans should expect additional news “in the months ahead”. In the meantime though, scroll down for the current list from Marvel, and make sure to check in with your local comics shop to make sure they’ll be taking part in Free Comic Book Day 2025.

We are awesome

Leave it to collectible company Hot Toys to just plunk down one of the best looking Venom figures of all time from out of nowhere. It’s a bit of a rarity too, since this new offering is styled after the characters Marvel Comics look, not from the movies. And if you loved the company’s Doctor Doom, you might just lose it over Venom.

The villain turned anti-hero has seldom looked better than this. Venom comes complete with optional tendrils/mini-heads, a trio of swappable tongues, two different head sculpts, and a really neat finish that has him looking appropriately slimy. He’s also more than a little imposing, at over 15″ tall.

Venom is a fan-favorite Marvel comic book character. He’s a terrifying alien symbiote that bonds with his host, granting them superhuman strength and agility, along with the ability to shapeshift. Initially a foe of Spider-Man, Venom embodies a complex mix of vengeance and protection, and often blurs the lines between hero and villain.

Venom’s menacing appearance, featuring a toothy grin, elongated tongue, and white spider emblem, makes him one of Marvel’s most recognizable characters.

Yeah those are some teams alright

So in the land of Marvel Comics, there isn’t much that’s too weird to see print these days. The publisher has firmly embraced the more tongue-in-cheek aspects of comics in recent decades, and that’s a tone that seems like it’s going to extend to an upcoming series of one-shot issues.

Each one of those will play off of a pairing of Marvel heroes (and villains?) that fans have never seen before, and there are some way-out choices in play. But don’t tune out if you prefer your superheroes to be a little more on the serious side, because the name J. Michael Straczynski is also on board.

A legendary comics writer from way back, Straczynski has overseen tales featured in Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Fantastic Four and way more in his career. So although the names mixed in with these upcoming issues are oddball for sure, they also might be pretty neat.

It all starts in January, with Rocket Raccoon and… Doctor Doom.

Straczynski and Robson kick things off in DOCTOR DOOM & ROCKET RACCOON where Doom does the one thing he never wants to do: ask for a favor! What awaits Rocket in Latveria? Mischief, miscommunication and an emotional journey across space and time in the Mighty Marvel Way! Following that, Volstagg recruits the Sentinel of Liberty in Straczynski and Chang’s CAPTAIN AMERICA & VOLSTAGG. When a war breaks out in the Nine Realms, Volstagg of the Warriors Three turns to the only man skilled enough to end it: Steve Rogers, Captain America!

Interested? Kind of tough not to be, at least a little anyway. And if you are, then you’ll also want to scroll down and take a look at the complete list of what’s on the way. A decade of new tales

For those who go way back in the hobby, and Star Wars fandom for that matter, Marvel Comics‘ history with the property should be fairly well known. The publisher was putting out Star Wars comics way back in 1977 after all, with stories and characters that would be all-new for film-goers.

After that initial period though, the brand would leave the House of Ideas, before setting back with it once again in 2015. So when you think about it, Marvel has kind of a two fold legacy going, as it heads in to what’s the tenth year of the modern run.

That began with Star Wars #1 from Jason Aaron and John Cassaday, a million-selling title according to the company. In 2025 there’ll be the above mentioned collection of comics on the way, but also Star Wars: A New Legacy #1.

A one-shot book, Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 will celebrate the happening with an array of star talent and unique characters. Fans can expect to see “Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, Kieron Gillen, and more as they return to the galaxy far, far away and spotlight iconic Star Wars characters that made their debut in a Marvel comic”, according to Marvel.

And as for the stories themselves, here’s a preview of what you can look for:

• From Darth Vader to Grand Moff Tarkin, the Empire’s most powerful gather on Alderaan to honor Emperor Palpatine in a thrilling story from New York Times best-selling Star Wars author Charles Soule and acclaimed Star Wars artist Ramon Rosanas! During this lavish Imperial event, Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros stage a daring heist, not knowing that Valance is hot on the trail! And a Sith artifact threatens to spoil the party for everyone! It’s a collision course of comics-originating characters including Darth Momin, Chanath Cha, Rik Duel, Commander Zahra, the Tagges, and many more, from the fan-favorite to obscure!
• What ever happened to Scar Squadron? Also known as Task Force 99, this elite group of stormtroopers led by Sergeant Kreel answered directly to Darth Vader and were among the deadliest threats Luke, Leia, and the Rebellion faced throughout Jason Aaron’s pivotal run. Star Wars: A New Legacy #1 will be on the stands this January the 29th, 2025. Look for all three of the above cover options to be day and date releases, with a second “virgin variant” edition coming up for the Kyle Hotz piece.

A Marvel-ous time

It’s almost hard to believe that it’s NYCC time once again, but that’s exactly the case. The big New York con will kick off next month (October 2024), and will once again be bringing a collection of comic book and entertainment properties to the show floor for fans to check out. That of course includes Marvel Comics, which will apparently be on-site in full force.

A set of six panels will be on tap for the show, along with periphery happenings at Marvel’s booth (#2153). While we don’t have full details on the latter just yet, we do know that costumes from the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again” will be on hand, along with what the publisher is calling “a photo opp from the upcoming Marvel Animation series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.””

Marvel Contest of Champions will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary as well, with hands-on demo stations, and fans can get their first look at the collaboration between Marvel and tabletop giant Magic: The Gathering. The latter is getting one of those aforementioned panels too, so it seems like there’ll be quite a bit of buzz surrounding it.

Naturally, there’ll be “con-exclusive giveaways, cosplay meetups, signings and more” (according to Marvel) too, so stay tuned right here for more announcements, and check out Marvel’s site for continuing news.

I am Iron Man

We have to admit we were a little put off by the promotional material for Marvel’s latest Iron Man relaunch. It’s pretty different from basically anything that we’ve seen before starring the superhero, and seeing leather straps holding armor pieces on can be a little jarring.

But along those same lines, there’s a definite cool-factor happening with it, and Marvel is promising that the man in the armor is going to be a bit different this time too. While it’s still Tony Stark in the suit, it’s a Tony Stark who’s through being attacked, and is ready to go on offense against a union of two villainous Marvel Comics staples, with Roxxon and A.I.M.

Roxxon and A.I.M. team up to take on Stark Unlimited! But they’re ready for the old Tony Stark. This one? He’s a lot angrier than he used to be. Iron Man is going to war! He’s determined to never hit rock bottom again—his old enemies will face an Iron Man more than willing to fight back, play dirty, and unleash every bit of his intellect to bring them down! When the best of his own technology fails him, Tony will build a brand-new armor that you can see in action in the new trailer! Dubbed the “Improvised Iron Man,”  readers will see it assembled throughout the series as Tony does what he does best—tinkering and upgrading it to counter anything the world throws at him.

“Down to the armor Iron Man is wearing, Tony is in pure survival mode from jump,” Ackerman explained to ComicBook.com in a recent interview. “The stakes start out very high and escalate from there. The self-assembled man

If you missed the news, Iron Man is about to change in a big way. Tony Stark is rebuilding his empire as Stark Unlimited in Spencer Ackerman and Julius Ohta’s new book (simply titled Iron Man), and is creating a new set of armor as well. But this isn’t a suit that you might’ve seen before, and comes across as being more low-tech than we’ve seen.

There’s a big reason for that too, in that one of the centerpieces of the book will be Tony creating and then tinkering with the armor as stories roll out. With that, it sounds like the new suit might be a constantly-changing one, which should present some interesting possibilities.

Along with the details that you see above, Marvel also dropped that accompanying Philip Tan cover that you see. The variant will be cast in foil, which has once again become a bit of a fan favorite, and if you look closely, has a pretty cool gimmick to it. The background that Iron Man is cast against is actually a massive pile of his former armors. Pretty neat.

Where’s Downey Jr?

By now you’re probably well aware of the big news that Robert Downey Jr will be rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time he’s not starring as Iron Man though, and has been cast as arch-villain Doctor Doom. That role will play out thanks to the SDCC-reveal of a two-part multiversal epic, in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films.

How that casting is going to work is still a mystery, though we’ve heard some rumors here and there about variants. But be that as it may, Marvel is picking up the Comic Con baton for a massive comics-based event called One World Under Doom in 2025. Even that’s not all the Doom that’s coming up though, as Victor Von Doom will also be coming to a new collection of variant covers.

The life and times of James Howlett

Was Wolverine a more effective character when his past was shrouded in mystery? There’s a definite argument to be made there, as the man called Logan was a massive star, and one of Marvel Comics’ biggest fan-favorite characters for decades before the dawn of the 2001 mini-series called Origin.
