Saturday 27 June saw the start of the Kernow and Southwest 600. Audax Kernow organiser Simon Jones took on the evening control at Gulval Village Hall, Penzance  (251km) and together with fellow organisers Martyn Aldis and Phil Conroy, plus Falmouth Wheelers’ friends, made sure the riders were checked in, fed, watered and generally cared for.

This is a challenging event that truly showcases the best of Cornwall (and Devon, of course). It is validated as a BRM and thus also a useful “prequalifier” for those looking to do Paris-Brest-Paris next year. So we were keen to do our bit to support the riders and make sure they set off on their journey back up country in good form. There were ten starters who all reached Penzance and eight finished within the time limit.

By an accident of scheduling, Sunday 28th June was the Mines and Mineral Railways 50km Audax from Carharrack, run by Jonathan Butt. Phil and Robin were riding, Simon was back on duty at the Butney Corner control and washing up in the kitchen, where Martyn was assembling cream teas the right way up and manning the teapot, alongside Margaret and a much appreciated extra pair of hands belonging to Katy, who stepped in “on the line”.

Cream Tea on the Mines and Mineral Railways Audax

A very different event, but still offering a scenic, challenging ride (especially the MTB route). There were 139 entrants overall, with a huge age range (a bit beyond 8 to 80) with plenty of Audax bon homie, enthusiasm and appetite.

What a great day on the bike! This year’s Wadebridge Coasters Annual Audax, Follow the Mordros did not disappoint. The weather was perfect the atmosphere was friendly and the event was well organized.

Coffee was provided at the start to send us on our way through the challenging Cornish landscape.

Wadebridge Depart

There were plenty of scenic stretches that kept the miles interesting. The Cornish countryside never disappoints.

The checkpoints provided an array of cakes and other goodies that catered for everyone (my favorite had to be the lemon drizzle cake). The atmosphere throughout the day was welcoming and the controls provided a genuine sense of community.

The biggest climb of the day came at 90 km into the route and was challenging but with the help of the riders around us giving encouragement, we made it to the top feeling like we had achieved the impossible!

Wadebridge Depart

The audax finished at The Ship Inn Wadebridge where we got to celebrate our achievements or drown our sorrows.

Strong westerly winds made the going tough in parts, especially for the 100km riders as they headed out for the West Penwith  loop, but provided a helping hand along the North Cliffs. After the general sogginess of the 2026 spring  we got off fairly lightly with only a few heavy rain showers.

Audax UK this year has had a “50:50 at 50” promotion to encourage more women to take part. Despite not being set up as a specific 50:50 event, we had very nearly equal numbers of men and women on the 100km ride, with many first-time riders. There was a really good atmosphere on all the rides, with new friends made, new challenges met, and lots of courage, determination and mutual support.

The events overall made a surplus of £122.86 which has been donated to ShelterBox.

By all accounts this was just as hilly a ride as last year, and possibly all the more challenging given the long climb up over the Clay Country on the return from Mevagissey.

There’s a ride report and photos here.

This year’s event raised £289.15 for the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

As (sort of) predicted, we enjoyed strong and gusty South Westerly winds, hail showers, and some sunshine that occasionally felt quite warm in moments of sheltered calm.

For many of us, the 50km of the Bunny Hop in these conditions was quite audacious enough, but a strong field battled their way down to Marazion on the Cornish 100 route.

The return to the Falmouth Cricket Club with winds behind and a splendid buffet ahead was well-earned and very welcome.

The old hands were on hand to help, the format and food basically unchanged, but we saw a number of riders new to the event and Jonathan’s introduction of on-the-line card payments helped keep things running smoothly at base – and allowed for some last minute pasty and cream tea sales.

The events raised £700 for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.

147 riders signed on, including a number of  very determined youngsters who impressed us all with their grit and cycling skill. Clearly the future of Audax in Cornwall is looking good. The results showing all validated finishers are on the Audax UK site:
