Under the Equality Act 2010 it is a legal duty for all training providers and employers to offer additional support as needed to their apprentice learners with LDDs, and funding is available to cover these costs. The strong push towards inclusivity for apprentice learners with LDDs is positive and much support is available. However there is a noticeable need to instil confidence in providers to successfully incorporate this offer into their training provision.

Support comes in many different forms

There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to support for apprentice learners with LDDs. Whatever an apprentice needs to succeed in their apprenticeship should be provided by the training provider or employer*. This includes, but it not limited to:

  • Providing assistive technology
  • Study skills support
  • One to one mentoring
  • Communication support
  • Providing handouts in larger font or different colour paper
  • Extra time to complete assessments
  • Changing parts of your job description

Additional Support in the learning environment

When it comes to providing Apprentice Learning Support in the learning environment there are a number of things that an education provider needs to take into consideration. Below we discuss the key considerations training providers need to take when looking at how they operate a well rounded training package for apprentice learners with LDDs.

You can also now access our Apprentice Learning Support Series which discusses topics including: support in practice and access to funding.

  1. Marketing of Support

The offering of support for individuals with LDDs should form a part of your marketing communications strategy. By raising awareness that support is available as part of the apprenticeship offering, stigma is reduced and an individual is much more likely to make a declaration up front when they feel they may need additional support in which to undertake an apprenticeship.

  1. Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) and Encouraging Declaration

During any IAG talks whether on a one-to-one basis or in group settings, support should be discussed openly. By discussing the support options that are available you will naturally encourage an individual to declare any difficulties at the outset therefore increasing the likelihood of implementing the most appropriate support in a timely way. This also acts to reduce the stigma around an individual accessing support.

  1. Assessment referral and recommendations

Once it has been identified that an apprentice requires support beyond that of the £150/month additional learning support fund there is a need to refer the individual for an assessment with a registered Assessment Centre. A Disability Assessor will meet with your learner and have a conversation to understand what support practices will assist them and produce a report with recommendations. Some individuals will have a previous diagnosis in the form of an education health care plan, doctors note or other disability/learning difficulty assessment. This can be used as evidence alongside the assessment in the Individualised Learner Record (ILR).

  1. Referral to support to specialist human resources

Upon receipt of the assessment recommendations you will need to refer your apprentice learner to the appropriate support. This may be in-house specialist staff or to an external provider. There are benefits to each however it is useful to be mindful that if you are dealing with a number of apprentices with varying LDDs an external specialist provider will have increased access to staff resources with varied skill sets and expertise to suit different learners.

  1. Administration and accessing funding

When accessing Excess (up to £19,000/year per learner) and Exceptional (above £19,000/year per learner) Learning Support funding streams there is an extra level of administration required. This will be incorporated into monthly activities. Our Apprentice Learning Support Series talks in detail about how these funds are accessed and administered. As an External Specialist Support provider we operate with providers administrative processes seamlessly.

  1. Planning and Monitoring the support process

Where one-to-one has been recommended the support consultant and apprentice learner will create a learning and support plan to guide the process. Progress and support can then be monitored closely throughout the duration of their apprenticeship. This ensures any issues, should they arise, can be identified and dealt with quickly. It also provides evidence to include in the ILR.

  1. Recording outcomes

Upon the completion of the apprenticeship outcomes should be recorded and where possible an exit interview will be undertaken. This will assist the learner to consolidate their support progress and look at how they can take the skills and strategies forward in future career and education activities.

Additional support in the workplace via Access to Work

This fund provided by the Department for Work and Pensions is intended to cover the cost of any support needed over and above ‘reasonable adjustments’, which are covered by an employer. The grant is based on a person’s individual needs and can help pay for things such as:

  • Special equipment, adaptations or support worker services to help do things like answer the phone or go to meetings.
  • Help getting to and from work.

This grant does not need to be paid back, and does not affect other benefits for the employer of worker.[1]

Where can I get more support and advice?

Whether you are an apprentice learner, employer or training provider Amano can help. You can watch our Amano Apprentice Learning Support Series now or Contact one of our friendly team today and find out how we can help you access the support you need.

Remote Student and Learning Support

None of us are untouched by the current Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges it presents.  Globally it is impacting everyone on one level or another and in these uncertain times we would like to take the opportunity to reassure our students, education partners and stakeholders that our services continue.

We’d like to update you on how we have successfully moved all our services to working in a remote way and although this may not be the ideal scenario for all our supported individuals, we are working hard to ensure that support is accessible and maintained wherever possible.

So, what have we achieved in the past three weeks?

Our Students

We acknowledge that this period of time will be potentially distressing for our students due to the significant uncertainty associated with the changes that universities and colleges are having to make. Some courses and universities are continuing to deliver teaching and we are supporting students to access resources online and continue their learning support remotely in whatever format is most appropriate to them. Many students have embraced remote, online support, and this will continue to be available as required. For those students who are less certain about changes to their academic course at this stage, we urge you to keep in touch with your support consultant.

Other Supported Learners

Our Apprentice learners continue to receive learning support where they remain on their programme, and remote support is offered for Access to Work support. Of course, we are well aware that there is plenty of disruption in the workplace with reduced and furloughed staff being a feature.

Support Consultants

Our team of committed Support Consultants have moved to delivering support remotely via a number of online platforms including video conferencing, document sharing sites, and telephone support. Our Consultants are highly experienced and qualified to support individuals during these times and are doing everything to accommodate individual’s chosen support method. We are keeping our Consultants up to date with top tips for remote support, and other key information via a weekly bulletin.

Assessment Centre’s, Universities and Other Education Partners

All lines of communication remain open with our team and we encourage our partners and education connections to keep in touch. We are here to support in whatever way possible during these uncertain times.

Head Office Team

Our entire head office team moved smoothly to working remotely from home and our telephone lines remain open to all enquiries. We are operating daily video conference meetings with our team to ensure everybody is kept up to date and aware of any changes in circumstances for our students and our support activities.

Message from Directors Graham Coiley and Paul Wood

“We are delighted to be able to maintain a good level of specialist learning support for our student learners through this unsettling period. Although remote support is different, it can still be a great help in accessing learning, managing academic life, and keeping disabled students on track with their studies”

Know the benefits of disclosing your learning difficulty or disability

When you live with a learning difficulty or disability (LDD), including a mental health condition, it can feel like a daunting task to tell people about it. Many people fear being treated differently or being perceived in a way that doesn’t reflect their true selves. These are natural apprehensions borne from decades of stigma, but these fears can also prevent you from accessing the right support and working in an environment that encourages your strengths, helps you to overcome obstacles and ultimately succeed in your apprenticeship.

There are many positive benefits to disclosing your condition and one of the most important factors to remember is that attitudes have and continue to change. The support you need as an apprentice or learner with an LDD is there, but telling someone about your challenges is key.

Disclosing your LDD from the beginning

When applying for an apprenticeship or course, you will have a few opportunities to tell your potential employer or training provider about your condition, should you choose to do so. The earlier you tell people, the quicker you can access the support you are entitled to.

  • The application form
Some forms will either ask directly if you live with an LDD including a mental health condition, while others will simply ask if you need any extra support during your studies or training. You are entitled to extra support by law. So if you feel you need it, say so.
  • Make your experience of living with a LDD your strength
When applying for an apprenticeship you may wish to say why you think you would be a good  candidate for the job by detailing the life skills and experiences you’ve gained from living with a disability or learning difficulty. Your condition could set you apart in a positive way.
  • Answer direct questions about your health truthfully
Depending on the job or course you would like to do, you may be asked direct questions about your physical ability to perform certain tasks. These questions should be answered truthfully so the employer or training provider is aware of your physical ability and can also provide you with support to enable you to fulfil the physical requirements of the job.
  • Equal Opportunities Form
The Equality Act 2010 has ruled that everyone should be treated fairly. An equal opportunities form allows potential employers to see who is applying for positions and if they come from a diverse section of society, including people with disabilities. This is separate to the job application and only the personnel department will see it. Completing this form is another chance to disclose your condition.

Should you decide to tell your employer or training provider about your condition later on, that’s fine too. There should be a person called a Learning Support Coordinator, a Disability Adviser, or someone in a Pastoral role available for you to talk to. This person is there is help you, whatever your needs may be.

How you could be supported at work and college, should you choose to disclose your LDD

Making the positive choice to disclose a disability, learning difficulty or mental health condition leads to many more positive, helpful and supportive outcomes.

  • Your rights are covered by the Equality Act
This law passed in 2010 states that an employer or training provider cannot prevent you from getting a job or studying on a course because you have a disability. Apprentices and learners who feel like they have been treated unfairly can complain under this law. But if you haven’t fully disclosed your LDD or mental health condition this could make your case weaker. Just one more reason why early disclosure is important.
  • Funding is there to help pay for support and any changes needed to your workplace or learning environment
The government provides funding to employers, training providers, universities and colleges so they can make reasonable adjustments to ensure their learners and employees with LDDs can succeed. For apprentices there is funding for Additional or Excess Learning Support. In the higher education setting Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) can also help cover the cost of extra equipment, study support in the form of a study skills specialist or mentor, for example, and non-medical assistance.

The Access to Work scheme is there to pay for specialist equipment such as assistive technology, support workers and additional transport costs to help apprentices with LDDs succeed in the    employment element of their apprenticeship, and achieve their professional goals.
  • Your working and learning environment will be adjusted to fit your needs
Specialist equipment and additional learning support can be provided, if you disclose your needs. Having happy apprentices and learners who successfully complete their apprenticeships and courses is what everyone wants, and having any extra support you need paves the way to a successful outcome.
  • You could build more meaningful and open relationships
Disclosing an LDD means you are being open about yourself, and by being this way others in a similar situation may feel empowered to do the same. If people feel respected and seen, a more meaningful working and learning relationship can develop. Which can only be a good thing.

Disclosing a disability, learning difficulty or mental health condition can be a very positive move towards a bright future. Contact one of our friendly team to discuss how we can help you and your apprentices in education and work today.
