Dirt, with a layer of snow

There’s quite a bit to like in the latest dose of content for Codemasters’ Dirt 5 this week. Probably the biggest addition though the new steering wheel support.

Not just limited to the PC, gamers across all supported platforms now have the ability to make use of a wheel peripheral with the game. Of course, those vary depending on what device you’re playing on. Codemasters cites both Logitech and Thrustmaster in the press release.

Part two of the announcement is the Snow Limits pack. The new collection of DLC is winter-themed, and loads up on the sights and sounds of the season.

Expect to see…

“an array of festive new objects to use in DIRT 5‘s Playgrounds mode, a brand new Sprint race event on the ice at Roosevelt Island, and some fresh customization options for your profile and liveries including holiday liveries for the Ford Mustang GT4 and Porsche Cayenne Transsyberia”.

And finally, probably least interesting, is a set of fixes and improvements. Officially arriving with update 2.00, is an assortment of “bug fixes and optimizations”. You can find the full patch notes here.

All of the above is landing on the PlayStation and PC versions of Dirt 5 today, and on the Xbox very soon. Notable too, is that the Stadia edition of the game is still coming up, and set to land some time in 2021.

Ready to roll

DIRT 5 delivers amplified racing across 70 routes, 10 locations and 13 vehicle classes. Players must master the likes of rally cars, rock bouncers, buggies, and more if they’re to prove themselves in the DIRT Series. The Career boasts the voice talents of gaming icons, Troy Baker and Nolan North, alongside Donut Media’s James Pumphrey and Nolan Sykes, and cameos from the world of gaming and motorsport. 

In the most ambitious DIRT title to date, Playgrounds allows players to create, share and discover custom arenas across three event types: Gate Crasher, Smash Attack and Gymkhana. Once verified by the creator, Playgrounds are available for anyone to download, and post their best scores to the global leaderboards.

Dirt 5 is out now on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It lands on next-gen platforms next week, and on the Stadia some time in 2021.

Getting the PS5 Dirt-yt

Dirt 5 hits the PS5 on November 12th in the US (19th everywhere else). You’ll also be able to find the off-road racer on the Xbox Series X|S at that console’s launch on the 10th, and everywhere else (excepting Switch) this coming Friday (the 6th of November). Google’s Stadia will be getting a version as well, though not till 2021.

Getting Dirty

DIRT 5 delivers breath-taking wheel-to-wheel pack racing on multiple surfaces including rugged terrain, harsh desert sands, snow, ice, tarmac and more. Weather conditions change in a heartbeat, cars flip and crash as the action heats up, and players must keep their wits about them to stay in the race. With a variety of game modes including Career, Arcade, Time Trial and Multiplayer games, DIRT 5 is an adrenaline rush from start to finish. DIRT 5 also introduces split-screen which can be played offline in co-op and competitive modes for up to four players.

Set for release as a launch game on the Xbox Series X|S this November the 10th, the current-gen edition will actually hit a few days ahead of time. Expect to see the game arrive for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC on the 6th. The PS5 version will launch before the end of the year as well, and Stadia gamers will be able to stream Dirt 5 as well, though not till some time in 2021.

Mud in the tires

Getting Dirt-y

Taking inspiration from arena-based action in previous DIRT games, this stadium complex is the perfect setting for some close-quarters racing with jumps, crossovers and a roaring crowd. Take the action through the stadium, the parking lot, and the outer area for a thrilling route, available in Career, Arcade and online play with up to 12 cars on track.

“Cape Town Stadium in South Africa is ideal for both our Playgrounds custom arena creator mode, and atmospheric, technical and flat-out fun races. Going from the perimeter through the parking lot and into the stadium is an exhilarating experience,” said Robert Karp, Development Director, DIRT 5.

Off-road couture

For the very first time, Codemasters reveals DIRT 5 gameplay running on Xbox Series S. The gameplay showcases the rock bouncer tackling an extreme Path Finder event in Italy. 

Powering through a huge marble mine, Path Finder events are not for the fainthearted, with massive elevation changes requiring power and skill to overcome.

Dirt 5 will be an Xbox Series X/S launch title, and arrive at retail on November 10th. Expect it on November 6th for current-gen consoles as well as the PC. PS5 gamers will get a copy too, but a little deeper into the season.

Portable Dizzy

Just announced today, this beefy new Evercade cart packs in 11 games. All of them being the product of a unique agreement between The Oliver Twins, publisher Codemasters, and of course Evercade. The deal sees all profits (yes all, according to Evercade) going to the National VideoGame Museum charity. So you’re actually doing something good by picking this one up.

As for the games included, all are somewhat niche, though I guess that depends on where you are in the world. Everything on the collection is way more well-known in the UK, even today. Honestly that’s probably even applicable to the publisher/developer combo. Originally anyway. I think it’s fair to say that Codemasters has become a pretty widely known in the decades since.

Probably the biggest hits on the cart here are the Dizzy games. Platformers starring an egg come to life, there are 7 Dizzy games included. And all of them from that golden late 80s through early 90s era. Not that there aren’t other interesting titles here too, like BMX Sim and Super Robin Hood, but having all the Dizzy’s together on one cartridge should be quite the draw for fans.

The Oliver Twins Collection hits the Evercade in third quarter of this year, and the console itself debuts this month.
