Preparing a conference submission can feel overwhelming, particularly if it is your first time or if you are unsure how reviewers assess quality and relevance. To help prospective authors prepare for ASCILITE 2026, we sat down with Richard McInnes, Manager, Educational Design at the University of Adelaide, to hear directly from someone who reads a lot of submissions and genuinely enjoys the process.
Richard is an experienced ASCILITE reviewer and a thoughtful and generous colleague. In our conversation, he shared practical advice, reviewer perspectives, and some reassuring reminders for anyone thinking about submitting this year.
One of Richard’s strongest messages was simple but powerful. Make it easy for the reviewer to understand your work. Reviewers come from diverse backgrounds and may not know your institutional context or project history. Clear structure, plain language, and signposting make a huge difference.
As Richard explains in the clip below, reviewers form early impressions quickly, and clarity sets the tone for everything that follows.
Another key insight from Richard is that strong submissions clearly explain why the work matters. Reviewers are always asking what this adds to the learning and teaching conversation. That contribution might be a new perspective, practical lessons, or something others can adapt to their own context.
Importantly, Richard emphasised that scale is not the deciding factor. Small or local projects can still be compelling when their relevance is clearly articulated.
Richard was particularly enthusiastic when talking about submission formats. Full papers are only one option, and they are not always the best fit. Posters and Pecha Kuchas are excellent ways to share emerging ideas, practical innovations, or work in progress.
Key tip from Richard. Posters are a great way to network and get feedback on your work. They often spark rich conversations and are an approachable entry point for first time presenters.
Across all submission types, Richard highlighted the importance of engaging with contemporary literature. This does not mean extensive referencing, but it does mean showing awareness of current thinking in the field. His hot tip for authors is to look at previous ASCILITE conference proceedings as a practical and relevant starting point.
Richard also shared some common issues he sees as a reviewer. One is assuming the reviewer can read your mind. If your context, acronyms, or project background live mostly in your head, they probably need a bit more explaining on the page. Another is getting a little too enthusiastic with claims. Big ideas are welcome, but reviewers want to see a clear connection between what you did and what you are saying it shows. Even shorter formats benefit from clear purpose, good structure, and a strong sense of why the work matters to others.
Richard closed our conversation with encouragement. He reminded us and potential authors that the review process is developmental and that ASCILITE reviewers aim to provide constructive feedback. His message is a reassuring one. Start where you are, submit your work, and join the conversation. ASCILITE values diverse voices, and your experience matters.

]]>In this post, we outline the importance of accurate student workload estimates, as well as the ways that student workload is estimated. We discuss our experience in creating a student workload calculator and using it to determine whether research-based workload calculations differ from commercially advertised workloads (spoiler alert: they do!), before exploring what this means for course authors.
If you’ve ever browsed a catalogue of online micro-credentials, you may have seen an estimated ‘time to complete’ on the course listing. For most of us, this is a crucial piece of information to consider before enrolling. Potential students may wonder how much time and effort they need to invest if they enrol, or whether they can fit the study load in around their other responsibilities. This advertised workload can be crucial to a student’s success. An estimate that is too low may mean that once a course commences, students are overwhelmed by an unexpectedly high workload. This, in turn, may mean increased stress, difficulty maintaining study commitments alongside work and other responsibilities, and students skimming content rather than deeply engaging. Ultimately, students may simply drop out. On the other hand, an estimate that is too high may deter potential students unnecessarily.
So, we know that having accurate student workload estimates is very important. But how do we know if an estimate is accurate? Existing literature highlights three main approaches to estimating workload.
Another approach is student workload calculators. The idea behind a workload calculator is that learning activities are categorised and entered into the calculator, and an estimated course completion time is output based on pre-defined activity durations. This provides a standardised and defensible estimate, but it’s important to note that workload calculators are not a silver bullet, as they have their own strengths and weaknesses. They may oversimplify the multifaceted nature of education, and they may not adequately reflect the specific demands of different styles of courses. However, these factors aside, the benefits of workload calculators appear strong: They provide consistency across estimates, reduce bias, and provide a research-based metric.

We aimed to create something research-informed, yet practical. While the workload calculator gave us a structured approach to estimating study time, it is essential to recognise that it was not an objective instrument, but rather an interpretive tool. Any workload calculator is built upon underlying assumptions about student engagement, prior knowledge, and cognitive effort, all of which are inherently variable. So, rather than serving as definitive measures, these tools should be seen as prompts for critical reflection. When discrepancies arise, they should prompt educators to interrogate their assumptions about learning tasks: Are certain activities taking longer than expected? Are self-directed elements of learning being adequately accounted for? How do different learners experience the same workload? By using workload calculators as reflective instruments rather than rigid formulas, you can refine course design to better support student learning and success.

]]>For the past three years, it seems that almost every conversation about education has either begun with, or ended in, a discussion about AI (Liu, 2025). Yet the more pressing challenge has been to examine what is actually happening in business (Bate, 2025). As business educators, we have rightly focused on what must change in our teaching and assessment (Dodd, 2024). The next step, however, is to look more deeply at how AI generally—and generative and agentic AI specifically—is being adopted and utilised in business practice (Harland, 2026).
Only then can we determine what needs to be integrated into our disciplinary teaching to ensure our graduates are ready to work and act in an AI-enabled world that is still unfolding and not yet fully understood (Selvaratnam & Venaruzzo, 2023).
Business has changed (Job Skills Australia, 2025a), and with it, entry-level roles (OECD, 2025). Popular commentary (World Economic Forum, 2023a)often suggests that such roles are disappearing. The data, however, indicates something more nuanced: it is not that there are fewer roles, but that what people do within those roles has shifted (Lodge et al., 2023). What we are seeing is task redistribution. When one task disappears, the critical question becomes: what new task has emerged?
University degrees have always aimed to develop more than job-ready skills (C. Logan-Fleming et al., 2025); they prepare graduates to think, analyse and adapt. Nonetheless, we must ensure that our students are ready to contribute meaningfully in a technology-enhanced workplace (Grant et al., 2025). Graduate programs offer structured rotations to identify a match between interests and skills, but only a small proportion of students access these pathways. For many others, entry-level roles (Job Skills Australia, 2025b)—HR administrator, assistant accountant, receptionist, general administrator—provide the first opportunity to ‘get a foot in the door’ (QILT, 2025).
These roles have traditionally offered rich opportunities for social learning: observing leadership, understanding organisational dynamics, learning how to communicate with clients, and developing professional judgement (OECD, 2025). Remote work has reduced some of these informal learning moments. Now, with AI embedded in many tasks, the nature of work has shifted again (World Economic Forum, 2023a).
Humans must add value where technology cannot (Chui et al., 2023). For graduates, the essential question is not whether AI is present, but how they can contribute alongside it. To do so, they must understand how technology in general—and AI in particular—is reshaping business models, decision-making and professional practice (World Economic Forum, 2023b). Our role, therefore, is twofold: to teach with technology and to teach about how technology is integrated within each discipline (UNESCO, 2023). From HR to accounting to economics, this requires collaboration across disciplinary boundaries and an integrated approach not previously considered.
From medicine to beauty, finance to education and the creative arts, no industry has been untouched (Chui et al., 2023). Some systems are proprietary; others are off-the-shelf tools embedded into everyday operations. Entry-level accounting and HR tasks now involve supervising, checking and ethically declaring AI-assisted outputs (Australian Government, 2025). Accuracy, critical oversight and professional voice become central capabilities (World Economic Forum, 2023a). The ability to understand and transparently disclose how AI has been used will increasingly define professional competence.
The challenge for business educators is to remain actively engaged in these conversations and to adapt quickly as the world of work evolves (AACSB, 2025). The Business Education SIG has been at the forefront of exploring these changes. Beyond AI, we have examined secure assessment at scale, the integration of regulatory frameworks in higher education, and the question of how to measure meaningful learning rather than defaulting to efficiency through traditional examinations (D. Logan-Fleming et al., 2025).
The role of the business educator continues to evolve. Engaging in these ongoing discussions can reinvigorate our practice and ensure we are preparing students to thrive in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

While “True North” in accessibility work remains the same–that accessible courses are good for all learners–each institution is on a unique path to creating and delivering quality, accessible learning experiences for their learners.
Regardless of where you are on the journey, our hope is to share some practical guidance that enables you to take an easier, less-stress path to more accessible Canvas courses. We’ve broken down the complex accessibility journey into five key segments to simplify your trek. Let’s embark!

All that preparation–from surveying the landscape and lightening the load–makes the experience much smoother and allows you to really gain momentum as you continue on the accessibility journey. And just like other journeys, once you’re en route, you’re focused on making progress and constantly learning at each turn, all contributing to an ever-important sense of momentum.
Think of how you grow familiar with a route when you’ve driven it more than once and it requires less cognitive focus–maybe you no longer rely on the GPS or you know your favorite stops along the way. In the same way, when you’re actively working toward an accessibility goal, the process and learning experience can really serve you in building momentum for the current leg of the journey and in the future.
Learn while doing: When you learn about accessibility issues while fixing them, the immediate practice helps solidify the learning. Plus, pairing accessibility work with accessibility learning really generates momentum by encouraging instructors and designers to use accessible course design practices going forward–ultimately reducing future accessibility issues!
Work by issue type or group: Familiarity with portions of a journey requires less cognitive effort. Apply this concept to accessibility remediation and gain momentum by working through accessibility fixes in groups! Tackling all instances of alternative text issues in one sitting reduces the cognitive load involved and really speeds up the process.

When Dr Katya Pechenkina was re-designing content for the capstone unit in Swinburne University of Technology’s Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education), her goal was not simply to boost engagement metrics but to support self-regulation and reflection for busy professional educators.
The capstone sits at the conclusion of a four-unit graduate certificate and brings together a diverse group of academics and professional staff. It’s a project-focused unit; Katya describes it as a space where students “apply what they have learned from previous units in the context of their own professional teaching practice to develop a learning and teaching project – one that may have to do with evaluating their impact as academics, perhaps changing an approach based on student feedback, or maybe introducing an innovation into their own teaching and measuring the impact of that innovation”.
Katya characterises her students as ‘pragmatic’ and ‘highly motivated’, with many teaching full-time or working full-time alongside academics in supporting roles, and most are looking for guidance that is efficient and immediately useful. She says that “with very busy professional learners, you must make decisions about what they will want to engage with, and what will be of the highest value to them in their learning journey. They’re selective and deliberate, and they won’t do something if they perceive it might be a waste of their time. So the question for us as educators of this cohort is how to design this experience to make it impactful to their learning and enable them to succeed”.
Those realities shaped her decision to use interactive quiz videos as one of the unit’s core learning scaffolds.
The short, scenario-based clips were embedded in the LMS, and interactive elements were inserted at key points to pause the video and prompt reflection or decision-making. They offered tailored feedback rather than generic answers, helping students plan their projects step by step. “I wanted to create something of value to this very practical, very success-oriented group of learners,” Katya says, “and to help them self-regulate as learners and to encourage them to reflect better in the context of their own teaching practice.”

In designing the videos, Katya drew on principles of effective video pedagogy – that ‘shorter is better’ and ‘more personal is better than overproduced’ – while experimenting with quiz placement and feedback design. She placed the first video early in the semester, once students had a grasp of the project requirements: “I wanted to place that video as early in the semester as possible, but late enough to ensure that students had learned at least the basic information about the unit, what the projects are, and what we want them to accomplish during the semester.”
The interactive prompts were placed in the video’s timeline where Katya felt that students would most benefit from a moment of reflection, and she found that placing questions throughout the video made more sense that clustering them at the end, acknowledging that “sometimes students won’t watch an entire video to the end, or they’ll finish the video and not bother with the questions, so placing the activities in the flow of the content makes a difference.”
After running the unit, Katya analysed the learning analytics to see whether interaction mattered. What she found didn’t really surprise her. “Students’ engagement with interactive videos had a stronger statistical link to their performance in the unit and the grades that they achieved, and other markers as well.” Traditional LMS metrics – page views and click counts – were weaker predictors. “To participate in an interactive video involves a higher level of cognitive engagement,” she explains. “It requires you to have a higher motivation for learning, and it’s not as passive as just measuring visits to a page.”

The shift from long recordings to short, interactive clips had benefits for her, not just for her students. Although the initial scripting and set-up took time, Katya says EchoVideo made integration straightforward: “It’s very easy to use EchoVideo as a tool, it’s intuitive and aesthetically pleasing, and it integrates well with our LMS”. Once created and shared, the videos reduced routine questions from students, allowing her to focus on higher-value conversations about the substance of their projects. The change freed her to concentrate on “the nitty-gritty of the projects rather than the administrative aspects of the unit.”
She also sees potential for scale. Katya believes that interactive videos can provide benefits for student learning across all class sizes and all discipline areas through structured, just-in-time guidance that fosters self-regulation where personalised feedback isn’t feasible. Embedding videos at consistent milestones means they remain relevant across unit iterations and can be re-used without losing pedagogical impact.
Katya’s work provides good insight into what ‘engagement’ should mean in professional education. For her, it’s not about attendance or click-through rates but about creating authentic, timely moments that prompt reflection and action. Short, scenario-driven interactive videos achieved that: they encouraged self-regulation, produced richer indicators of student success, and reduced routine workload for teaching staff.
Her advice for others designing similar experiences is straightforward: align interactive activities with project milestones, keep videos concise and authentic, prioritise quality over quantity, and design prompts that ask learners to think rather than recall. When used this way, interactive video becomes less about monitoring engagement and more about enabling deeper, sustainable learning.
