I’ve been busy working on a 2.5hr DVD of live Stick concerts that I shot while making this documentary. It’s just about done now. It truly sounds amazing and shows a wide variety of music being played on Emmett’s instrument.

More news about that soon.

Double-handed guitar… Maybe you are thinking of Stanley Jordan? He was influenced by Emmett. Emmett’s invention gives the musician a breakthrough playing method and an instrument with the ergonomics designed for that technique.

The irony of Stanley Jordan’s story is that after years of Emmett playing, touring, teaching, recording and manufacturing The Stick, Stanley Jordan came on the scene, tapping his guitar and was heralded as a major innovator. In 1985 “Magic Touch,” his debut album for Blue Note Records was in all the press, and was number one for 50 weeks on Billboard’s Jazz chart. Jordan to my knowledge has never publicly credited Emmett.

The banjo is always thought of as so uniquely American, but I recently saw a documentary and had the privilege to talk with supreme banjoist Béla Fleck about his film “Throw Down Your Heart.” It takes the viewer on a journey to discover the African roots of the banjo. I highly recommend it.

Nice work, I now remember seeing the stick and loving it. I played Banjo for awhile… There was also a guy who played guitar in a double handed, plucking and tapping way, similar , but the stick is a unique sound. I remember the evolution of picking because of Flatt and Scruggs bluegrass style hammer picking. Thanks for sharing. TT
