We will employ three artists as Housemates per year, formally attaching them to a Belvoir mainstage production in a role aligned with their creative practice (director, designer, writer, actor). Through this process, they will have access to the full life cycle of the production, attending design presentations, rehearsal room events, company runs, technical rehearsals and previews. By observing every stage, the cohort will gain first-hand insight into how shows are built for the mainstage. Alongside this, they will be actively supported to develop their own practice by connecting with our Artistic and Programming Team through sustained mentoring and artistic support.

Housemates is about access: to the process, the people, and to the inner workings of Belvoir.

We’re delighted to announce our three inaugural Housemates; three artists that have shown great achievement and capability within the independent sector, and will become part of Belvoir across the coming months:

• Aloma Barnes Siraswar will join THE COCONUT CHILDREN Team as Associate Costume Designer
• Hailley Hunt will be join the A ROOM WITH A VIEW Team as Associate Set & Costume Designer and Assistant Costume Maker
• Mây Trần will also join THE COCONUT CHILDREN Team as Assistant Director

ABOUT ALOMA BARNES SIRASWAR

Aloma is a Sydney-based costume designer, stylist, and set designer working
across theatre, screen, and campaign styling. She holds a Master’s degree in
Costume Design for Performance from the London College of Fashion (UAL),
where she was encouraged to push creative boundaries through costume design.
Aloma is fascinated by costume as a language in itself, one that communicates
identity, psychology, status, and emotion before a character speaks.
Her theatre credits include work with Sport for Jove, New Ghost Theatre
Company, 25A and KXT. She is currently the Costume Designer for Harlots, an
upcoming production by New Ghost Theatre Company at the Old Fitz Theatre. Her
screen work includes the documentary Kindred, directed by Adrian Russell Wills,
which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival, and she previously interned in the
costume department for Amazon Prime Video with Excel Entertainment in
Mumbai.

ABOUT HAILLEY HUNT

Hailley is a Sydney based Set and Costume Designer, her credits as Set and

ABOUT MÂY TRẦN

Mây Trần is a Western Sydney based creative whose projects as an actor, writer,
and director have been nominated at the Melbourne International Film Festival,
Helpmann Awards, and Sydney Theatre Awards.
With a background largely in theatre, some of their credits include Cleansed (Old
Fitz Theatre, 2022), Hot Mess (KXT, 2021), R+J RMX (Opera House, 2021) and
PLAYLIST (PYT, Opera House, 2019). Currently, they are working on their first
solo piece Evil Autism.

Belvoir was founded on “rough magic”, so we are looking for projects that are ready to meet the theatre-making provocation of this program. 

25A is a way for artists to practise and grow their craft. It is designed to limit the costs of putting on and presenting a show. The goal is that the maximum share of profit goes to people not overheads, and that teams can put their energy into making the work not the demands of producing.

We are looking for teams of artists that are excited about the task of putting on a show for $2500 or less (excluding cost of play rights). We want to support teams that are eager to grapple with the unique nature of the Downstairs Theatre, and hold the same theatrical values we hold ourselves to:

• Boldness
• Playfulness
• Collaboration
• Openness
• Love of Theatre

Our collaboration with Belvoir continues to champion emerging First Nations artists as they create bold new stories for the stage. A MIRROR

Belvoir St Theatre are seeking volunteers from all backgrounds and levels of experience to appear on stage at the end of our production of A Mirror, part of our 2026 Season.

Theatre, politics, war, egotism, bureaucracy are all neatly skewered in this comedy. Set in an unnamed dictatorship, A Mirror tells the story of Adem, a mechanic who’s written a play and naively submitted it for consideration to the Ministry of Culture. He’s called to the ministry by a bureaucrat, Čelik, who suspects Adem has potential – if only he can learn to write in the state-approved, patriotic way, instead of telling uncomfortable truths. 

We’re inviting volunteers to appear on stage in the final scenes of the play. You don’t need to be a professional actor, just be over the age of 16 years and available for at least 3 performances across the season.

The season is on every Tuesday – Sunday night from the 21 Feb – 22 Mar, with matinee performances every Saturday & some Thursdays. Please fill out the form below to express your interest and our team will be in touch with you.

Dear Son

In the referendum’s aftermath, twelve Indigenous men were asked to write a letter to their son – or father – about themselves, their mob, their story, their hopes for the future, and the things they’ve never said before. From Thomas Mayo’s seemingly simple idea came Dear Son, a collection of messages to the future and the past that celebrate Indigenous fatherhood, and might even light a way to come together.

Amplified: The Exquisite Rock and Rage of Chrissy Amphlett

Chrissy Amphlett was a seismic force in a school uniform. Now the legendary rebel-queen of Australian rock is reimagined by the prodigiously talented Sheridan Harbridge.

Chrissy had raw talent, stage conquering charisma and a rock’n’roll rasp. Her snarls of sexuality and vulnerability were thrown in your face like a beer in the front bar. Fronting the Divinyls, she shouldered through a blokey crowd, taking the band from the sticky carpets of Australian pubs to dizzying heights of chart success around the world.

Together with his new assistant Mei and national playwriting treasure Bax, Čelik takes his new protogé through a crash-course in how to write a celebrated play for the national stage…

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

Four women have known each other for decades, and have a friendship that goes with it – good-humoured, caring, and forthright when required. But Sylvie has died, and when the remaining three come together to pack up her beach house, they find maybe they haven’t been as honest – or as good friends – as they thought.
This adaption of Charlotte Wood’s novel shows that there’s a difference between growing old, and growing wise.

The Birds

16 MAY – 7 JUN

Nature isn’t behaving. The weather is doing strange things, the sea and sky sound different, and things that were once innocent, benign, harmless, are taking on dark and alarming aspects.

From a remote farmhouse one family sounds the warning, but when the threat is unimaginable, and the world seems to be about to change forever, survival is just the first step…

The Jungle and the Sea

18 OCT – 29 OCT

When violence escalates between the Sinhalese-dominated Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Gowrie does everything she can to keep her family alive. She sends her husband and one daughter to Australia for safety. She takes her other two daughters to search through the jungles of northern Sri Lanka for her estranged son. But how does a family come together again when the world around them is tearing itself apart? How is peace made? How can we honour the dead?

Thomas isn’t an ordinary 9 year-old – he can see the extraordinary. Things other people don’t seem to see: canals bursting with tropical fish, hailstorms in summer, plagues of hopping frogs. He draws them all in his book, The Book of Everything. And in that book he also writes a promise to himself:

When I grow up, I’m going to be happy.

A magical story for young and old – of a child who learns what to do when he’s most afraid, and how to face the wrong in the world.

A Room with a View

3 OCT – 1 NOV

Lucy Honeychurch could follow the path set out for her – life would be easy and comfortable. But a few days in Florence, and her view of love and possibility is thrown out the window. Sublime art and architecture, an array of folk who see the world through different eyes, and the attentions of the passionate George Emerson might just change her forever.

But back home in her room, Tuscany feels like another universe. Will she stay safe with her slightly underwhelming fiancé Cecil? Or will Lucy find a new room, and a new view?

The Coconut Children

21 NOV – 20 DEC

Cabramatta, 1998. Sonny Vuong and Vince Tran are sixteen; they’ve known each other since they were small. Sonny lives in a world of imaginary love affairs and nineteenth century novels. But Vince has done it harder. He’s just out of juvenile detention, he’s seen how close brutality and despair can be when life knocks you off balance. And now they’re back in each other’s lives, thanks to some weird goings-on – a grandma who’s hitting the bottle, a stash of porn at the Cabra Golf Club, and the inevitable secrets from the old country coming to the surface. And just how do you find yourself, when you’re constantly being watched and judged in this loving, maddening community, full of pain and joy?

This Fellowship is open to both playwrights to write a new play and to directors or writer/directors that can lead the creation of an Indigenous led new stage work, whether that be a new play, an adaptation or through a devised process. It also includes an invitation to have a voice in Belvoir’s artistic decision-making processes.

The Fellowship provides the Fellow the opportunity to work at Belvoir as a resident artist to create their work, subject to negotiation with the Fellow’s availability and location over a two-year period. Across this period, they will receive a full commission to develop a new original work, and wages to work in the Belvoir’s Artistic and Programming team.

In addition to the financial support for the Fellow, resources will also be provided to the project being developed. Creative milestones, placement within Belvoir, resourcing and collaboration will be discussed with the selected Fellow.

The Fellowship model seeks to be deeply collaborative and to support the selected Fellow to create a work for the stage, engage the Fellow in the experience of being in a company structure, and offers the opportunity to support other Indigenous artists through Belvoir’s creative development and programming processes.

Past winners include current Fellow Hannah Belanszky, Guy Simon (2023), Dalara Williams (2022), Thomas Weatherall (2021), Jorjia Gillis (2020), Nathan Maynard (2019), Kodie Bedford (2018) and Megan Wilding (2017).
