Aihevba disclosed this while engaging investors and stakeholders at a strategic meeting on the sidelines of the recently concluded Africa Energy Week in Cape Town, where he also underscored the critical importance of local collaboration and regional cooperation to position Africa as a global energy leader.

“The journey towards a secure and sustainable energy future for Africa cannot be travelled in silos,” Aihevba said, adding. “Every refinery upgrade, every gas commercialization project, every power reform and community wealth accretion initiative must be part of a broader continental blueprint.”

“We have expanded our reserves development and production capacity with the acquisition of seven rigs for both drilling and workover. This rig acquisition, Aihebva noted, is central to Sahara’s plan to boost its production to at least 350,000 bbl/d of oil and 1,000,000 MMScf/d of gas in Nigeria within the next five years. “Two of the seven new rigs are already in the country, with another two expected to arrive before year-end. Our upstream operations are anchored on a robust shared prosperity approach, which recognises our host communities and government as partners, collaborating towards becoming locally competent and globally competitive in bringing energy to life responsibly.”

Aihevba highlighted that these investments are already yielding results, noting that one of the rigs, the state-of-the-art 2000 HP Land rig named L-Buba, has successfully commenced operations by spudding a gas development well in one of Sahara’s fields, with the second rig currently being mobilised to the site to spud an oil development well, and other rigs to follow soon. The rigs will be managed by Arahas Global Oilfield Services, a Sahara Group company.

A total of 7 brand spanking new drilling rigs have been purchased with 2 already in the country and additional 2 scheduled to arrive before the end of the year.

OML11 is the first beneficiary of these investments and has taken its first step on this journey, spudding the first of three planned gas and condensate Wells in Okoloma field.

At exactly 14:40hrs on the 23rd of September, 2025 Okoloma-02 was born. These wells when completed will deliver around 70MMscf/d of gas and 4,500bbl/d of condensate when completed.

The gas will help boost electricity supply in the country and contribute its quota to Nigeria’s production targets.

The spudding of the first well by the state-of the-art 2000 Horse Power Land rig named L-Buba represents a huge testament to innovation, multiple-stakeholder collaboration, and shared aspirations between the OML11 JV and Host Communities.

“Lost Time Injury” is an important occupational safety and health benchmark in the oil and gas industry. It is a measure of an injury or illness that occurs following a work-related incident and causes an individual to miss workdays or disrupts operations due to downtime.

Henry Menkiti, Chief Operating Officer, Asharami Energy, said the company recorded the feat over the period of December 2016 to August 2023, while working on various projects, including the site preparation and construction of mooring points for barging operations, the construction of dual 10,000 bbls crude oil storage tanks, community power generation and metering installations, the construction of a community townhall, turnaround maintenance (TAM), and clamping operations along the 18.5km Pipeline RoW.

Menkiti said the achievement reinforces Asharami’s dedication to propelling the “safety first, safety always” mantra in the sector, having also recorded 2 million LTI-free man-hours in 2021 across various operations driven by responsible engineering and unwavering commitment to global occupational safety and health (OSH) standards.

The 2021 record was achieved over 873 days of zero work-related incidents, enabled by the company’s robust Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies. In 2020, Asharami accomplished 1,712,295 LTI-free man-hours, surpassing the industry recording standard which is set at 1,000,000 LTI- free man-hours.

“Our safety milestones underscore the premium we place on carrying out our operations within the confines of global safety standards. Our commitment to ensuring the well-being of our employees, host communities and other stakeholders is a sacrosanct at Sahara,” Menkti said.

According to him, the recent record was facilitated by the implementation of safe systems of work such as Permit-To-Work (PTW), Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and regular Tool meetings. The company also ensured strict compliance with Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) protocols by closely monitoring all contractors on-site and engaging cross-contractor collaboration at both the management and operational levels.

Socio-economic growth prospects in Ajoki community, Edo State, have soared following the delivery of uninterrupted power supply to the community by Enageed Resource Limited, a Sahara Group upstream company and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).

Available to tens of thousands of beneficiaries, the Enageed Resource Ajoki Gas-to-Power project generates a combined capacity of 1Megawatt round-the-clock electricity from gas, in keeping with Sahara Group’s commitment to promoting access to clean energy and spearheading seamless energy transition in Africa. The project had the NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS) and the Edo State Government as key partners.

“What we initially thought was a pipe dream has eventually become a reality,” said Scott Omasan, Secretary of Ajoki community at the handover ceremony. “The test run has been on since December last year and now the project is in full gear. Now, small businesses, healthcare, and commercial activities will be transformed in Ajoki. Even residents of neighbouring communities now flock into Ajoki to do one business or the other because of the uninterrupted power in our community,” Omasan added.

According to Olubunmi Lawson, Head Sustainable Community Development, who represented Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NUIMS, the project will foster increased agricultural and economic productivity, higher revenues, better healthcare, and make the environment cleaner. “NNPC Ltd is committed to timely delivery of social impact projects across the nation. I want to encourage the good people of Ajoki community to continue to collaboratively work with Enageed Resources Limited to ensure the sustainability of this laudable project,” she said.

Elated by the project, Shegun Eloa and Esther Koma, the Youth and Women Leader respectfully of Ajoki, commended Enageed Resource and Sahara Group for giving the community “a new lease of life.” The Olareaja of Ajoki Community, Pa Joseph Agbaga said the community would ensure the safety of the power plant and continue to work with Enageed harmoniously. “Enageed and Sahara Group have always stood out in their approach to working with the community and Ajoki is grateful for this power project that will now make Ajoki stand out in the Niger Delta,” he added.

Babatomiwa Adesida, Head, Stakeholder and Community Relations said the gas-to-power project was the most recent sustainable project which Enageed had implemented in Ajoki. He said the firm had previously executed other sustainable projects in the areas of health, education, capacity building and infrastructural development. He further stated that these projects have resulted in the significant development of the community, promoted a sense of ownership amongst the people and led to peaceful operations of Enageed within the community.

Enageed Resource, the operator of Oil Mining License (ML) 148, commenced the Ajoki Electrification Project in 2019 with the aim of converting flared gas (at the flow station) to electric power for 24-hour electricity supply to Ajoki Community.

The Gas to Power Project has since replaced the use of diesel generators in the community, a development that is expected to impact positively on the quality of air and life in Ajoki.

Adeeyo, who is the newly appointed Chairman, Technical Papers Sub-Committee of SPE Nigeria Council Technical Standing Committee, disclosed this while speaking on the role the society could play in shaping the future of the sector.

He said Asharami Energy, a Sahara Group Upstream Company, would work closely with the SPE and other stakeholders to increase the impact of the society’s operations across the energy sector value chain through more learning and development platforms.

He said, “The SPE can also offer educational opportunities to help engineers and other professionals learn how to convert technical papers into problem-solving technology in the oil and gas space to facilitate better resource efficiency, emissions reduction and fit-for-purpose solutions in the sector’s quest for cleaner energy.”

The Society of Petroleum Engineers is a not-for-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. 

SPE serves more than 124,800 members in 134 countries worldwide, providing a forum for the exchange of technical knowledge and the advancement of sound engineering practices.

Speaking on his appointment as Chairman, Technical Papers Sub Committee, Adeeyo said, “I see this as a recognition of my contribution to oil and gas technical knowledge and commitment to the SPE and its objectives. The position will give me a strong platform to contribute significantly to transfer of knowledge and the growth and development of research and innovative technologies in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.”

He noted that the upstream sector in Nigeria was facing several major challenges, including the need to attract investment, improve infrastructure and address security concerns. 

“Insecurity is a major challenge, as oil facilities and personnel have been targeted by vandal groups. Infrastructure constraints, such as the lack of pipelines and refining capacity, have also hampered the sector,” he stated.

The sub-committee chairman pointed out that the SPE can play a role in helping to address these challenges by providing technical assistance and training, as well as advocating for more investment in the sector. 

“The society can also provide a forum for sharing of best practices. In this regard, the availability, accessibility, and usability of cutting-edge technology in pipeline surveillance, oil field digitalisation and automation will be of premium benefit to the industry. I believe the SPE should set the pace in the national discourse on alternative optimal technology in the oil and gas sector.”

Underscoring the need for preparing young engineers for the future, Adeeyo said Sahara Group’s commitment to generational sustainability continues to drive Asharami Energy’s investment in training programmes for all levels of employees.

Esther Koma is a community leader in Ajoki, an oil producing community in Ikpoba-Okha  Local Government Area of Edo State. Ajoki is an Itsekiri community in Edo with their larger brothers and sister, living across Delta and Edo States.
Considering that the community is located in a remote area of Edo State, it lacks modern amenities even though it is an oil bearing community. But reprieve came to them in February when the Edo State government in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Enageed Resource began the construction of a 17.8km road to connect the community to major towns and cities. 
This was not all as recently, people of the area benefitted from a free healthcare, ICT training, business development initiative, business registration opportunities and financial independence.
Against this backdrop, the community woman leader, Madam Esther Koma said she is extremely grateful to the company for the medical outreach particularly for the elderly, asserting that the treatment she received was very beneficial to her and would enable her carry out her daily duties with ease.
Similarly, Michael Ukuyon, the community youth leader and entrepreneur, confessed that the event significantly improved his computer skills and would help him transact his business in line with global standards.

According to him, “Enageed is unwavering in its commitment to the safety and health of its employees and host communities.  We are hopeful that this session will enlighten the community on how to stay healthy and provide relief for people requiring eye care interventions and other basic health challenges.
“We stand ready to ensure continuous development in the communities we operate in, and believe the skills learned and knowledge gained will better equip community contractors to improve the efficiency of their operations and grow their business. We therefore look forward to the future outcome of this training to foster innovation and economic development in the Ajoki Community.”
In his goodwill message, the Secretary General of Ajoki Community, Scott Omesan, commended Enageed for the laudable initiative, which he noted would continue to facilitated cordial relations between the community and Enageed.
Omesan promised that as a Community, “we shall do everything possible to protect the company’s facilities in our domain.” 
He also added: “We also expect continuous cooperation with the company in the spirit of the local content policy. Today’s programme has given our youths the opportunity to learn more about ICT. Also, the medical outreach has afforded a lot of our people the opportunity to know their health status in the area of eye challenges and others.With such initiatives, i believe the relationship between us and the company will continue to be cordial.”
In delivering his remarks, the Community and Stakeholders Relations Manager to Enageed, Babatomiwa Adesida thanked the community for their unwavering support towards ensuring the organization’s peaceful operations in their area. He reiterated Enageed’s commitment to continually empowering the community and enjoined the youth to remain dedicated to developing their skill sets which is a key element to promoting financial independence.
Responding on behalf of the local beneficiaries, a youth of Ajoki community, Friday Eseoghene, expressed appreciation to Enageed for the computer literacy programme which he confirmed has opened his eyes beyond what he could have ever imagined and asked for many more of such events, assuring the organisation of the youths dedication to promoting peace and unity in the community.
