Session abstract
“Global change is driving shifts in wildfire risks. This session aims to explore the interactions between these changes and wildfire dynamics by bringing together climatic, ecological, and socio-environmental approaches across different spatial and temporal scales. It will focus in particular on the reconstruction of past fire regimes, recent changes in wildfire activity, and future projections in the context of climate change, as well as the associated risks for socio-ecosystems.
Particular attention will be paid to the impacts of wildfires on ecosystems (biodiversity, vulnerability, resilience) and on human societies (exposure, vulnerabilities, risk management). The session welcomes interdisciplinary contributions that can improve our understanding of feedbacks between fire, climate, vegetation, and human activities across different timescales.
The aim is to foster dialogue between researchers and stakeholders in order to improve our understanding of wildfire dynamics and to identify adaptation and management strategies in response to increasing wildfire risks in a context of global change.”

Abstract
The Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT, ~1.2–0.65 Ma) marks a major reorganization of the Quaternary climate system, characterized by the shift from dominant 41-kyr to 100-kyr glacial cycles. Although this transition has been extensively studied, the mechanisms responsible for the emergence of the 100-kyr world remain debated. The aim of this research is to investigate the role of the North Atlantic westerlies in shaping hydroclimate variability and ice-sheet evolution during the MPT.
This study is based on a composite high-resolution deep-sea pollen record from IODP Sites U1385 and U1386 on the southwestern Iberian margin. Pollen assemblage analyses, multivariate statistical approaches, and time-series analyses were used to reconstruct vegetation, hydroclimate, and changes in the North Atlantic westerlies at orbital and millennial timescales. The results highlight major changes in Mediterranean vegetation linked to variations in insolation, glacial boundary conditions, and atmospheric circulation. At orbital timescales, pollen-based reconstructions indicate substantial fluctuations in regional hydroclimate associated with shifts in the position of the North Atlantic westerlies. These changes influenced moisture transport across the North Atlantic region and likely contributed to the evolution of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. The record also documents significant transformations of Mediterranean ecosystems, reflecting alternating humid and arid conditions throughout the transition.
At millennial timescales, persistent climate variability is observed across the entire MPT, although its amplitude and expression vary through time. Spectral analyses and comparisons with regional and global climate records suggest a progressive transition from variability primarily driven by orbital forcing to a stronger influence of ice-sheet dynamics. These results underline the importance of interactions between atmospheric circulation, hydroclimate, and ice sheets in the climate evolution of the North Atlantic region.
This work highlights the value of deep-sea pollen records for documenting long-term environmental change and provides new insights into the mechanisms linking the North Atlantic westerlies, hydroclimate variability, and the emergence of 100-kyr glacial cycles during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.

]]>Essential for understanding the history of our origins (the earliest hominins, the first anatomically modern humans, etc.), Quaternary research in Africa is shaped by numerous challenges and distinctive features unique to the continent. From the complex volcano-tectonic system of the East African Rift to the fluctuations of the major African lakes (Turkana, Victoria, and Chad), as well as the climatic evolution of the Sahara and tropical weathering processes such as lateritization, Quaternary scientists investigate exceptionally diverse and dynamic environments. These studies also involve significant logistical challenges, including remote and difficult-to-access field sites, extreme climatic conditions, and, in some regions, limited infrastructure. They require strong international collaborations, with careful attention to local contexts and the challenges of equitable scientific partnerships.
Entirely dedicated to African Quaternary research, the AFEQ-CNF INQUA meeting will provide an opportunity to foster scientific exchanges among researchers from a wide range of disciplines (geologists, geomorphologists, geochronologists, paleontologists, paleobotanists, archaeologists, and others), to share the latest methodological advances, and to present an overview of ongoing research in Africa, particularly on the evolution of human behaviour and the interactions between climate, environments, fauna, and human societies.

Thesis Abstract
This dissertation investigates the relationships that human societies have maintained with underground environments over time, focusing on both the evolution of cave access and the modification of subterranean landscapes. How can geomorphology help us understand the evolution of cave landscapes while also identifying morphological anomalies that bear witness to human intervention? To address these questions, this research applies an anthropo-geomorphological approach to two cave sites: La Garma Cave (Spain) and Saint-Marcel Cave (France). This geoarchaeological methodology is based on a threefold framework combining 3D topographic surveying, high-resolution geomorphological mapping, and relative chronology. These methods were specifically adapted to identify subtle traces of sediment remobilization, including clast-by-clast analysis, the orientation of broken speleothems, and other fine-scale indicators. The methodological developments undertaken in this work also led to the proposal of several new graphical and documentary tools, including progression difficulty diagrams and spectral diagrams. At Saint-Marcel Cave, this approach revealed Mesolithic structures located nearly 1.5 km from the cave entrance, indicating that prehistoric visitors negotiated several obstacles that already existed at the time of occupation. At La Garma Cave, evidence for up to four successive phases of cave modification was identified, three of which date to the Palaeolithic. Some of these constructions appear to have been directly related to issues of movement and progression within the cave. These findings provide encouraging new insights into ancient underground practices while also demonstrating the potential of anthropo-geomorphology to detect and interpret subtle traces of past human activity in subterranean environments.

]]>The project is based on an integrative geoarchaeological approach aimed at placing archaeological and paleontological sites and data within their geomorphological, paleoenvironmental, and paleogeographical context, using detailed, multi-scale studies. The results are expected to provide key insights to strengthen the current model of four dispersal centers in central and southern Patagonia, or to propose new alternative dispersal hypotheses. The position includes participation in fieldwork missions in Patagonia.

Abstract:
Since the beginning of the Neolithic period (around 6000 years ago BCE), the Mediterranean Basin has seen the emergence of autumn lambing, a phenomenon unique to this region. The reasons for the establishment and development of this practice are unclear, but the seasonal characteristics of the Mediterranean climate may have been a determining factor. This thesis studies the spatio-temporal variability of the climate in the central Mediterranean at the end of the Late Glacial and Holocene periods (∼15,000 years ago), its characteristics and the forcing mechanisms at play, to provide a framework for understanding the relationship between past climate and the livestock farming practices of Neolithic communities. Quantitative reconstructions of palaeoclimate have been carried out for southern France and Italy using a multi-proxy approach that combines fossil pollen and GDGT (glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether) lipid biomarkers. A regional synthesis of the Holocene climate variability was conducted across 38 fossil pollen sequences using a multi-method approach. Case studies were then carried out on three sedimentary sequences – Lago Grande di Monticchio (southern Italy), Canroute (southern Massif Central) and Montady (Southern France lowlands) – for which fossil pollen and GDGTs were combined to reconstruct the Late Glacial and the Holocene palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments of the sites. My results show the presence of highly contrasting spatio-temporal climate patterns in summer, with a strong north-south component, where latitudes 41-43 °N act as a climate transition zone, and a west-east component, where a climate gradient is present. The Mediterranean climate established itself around 8000 years ago and had a greater impact on southern regions than on northern regions. This study highlights that at the beginning of the Neolithic period (around 6000 years ago BCE), Mediterranean climatic conditions were favourable for the establishment of autumn lambing, but that they may have led to different regional adaptation behaviours among farmers in response to climatic constraints, i.e., autumn lambing, early winter lambing, or spring lambing only.

From Monday to Thursday, the scientific sessions will take place (a single plenary session, with no overlap). Each day will end with the APLF and AFEQ award ceremonies, as well as various general assemblies and discussion periods. The gala evening will be held on Wednesday. On Friday, two workshops will be offered (one in the morning and one in the afternoon). The first will focus on karstology, and the second on the notions of socio-ecosystems and co-construction. On Saturday, an excursion will take place, prepared by M. Delmas, A. Vialet, E. Chapron and Didier Cailhol.
