Comment on Revelation 14: 9-11 by M85

Revelation 14 is based on the three angels (14:6-9) that announce what is going to happen in the near future, these events then take place: destruction of Babylon, torment of the followers of the beast, and judgment of the earth (Chapters 16, 17,18). In particular Rev 14:9-11 seems to be describing what happens in chapter 16 when the worshippers of the beast are tormented by the plagues of God’s wrath. It doesn’t really fit with a description of the second death. Also we are told in 2 Thessalonians 1:9 that the second death is about being excluded from the Lord’s presence. Revelation is also circular in its imagery, so it may also be describing the locust plague (chapter 9), when the worshippers of the beast were tormented for five months together with the later judgments. The actual scene of Rev 14:9-11 seems to be a symbolic reversal and mockery of the Roman emperor in the arena, whereas in the present Christians are tortured in the presence of the emperor and his henchmen, in the near future the followers of the beast will be tortured in the presence of the Lamb and his angels. There may also be a chiasmus: whereas Christians who die enter into God’s peace and ‘rest from their labor’, the followers of the beast who are still alive have no peace and are tormented.

Comment on I’m a Christian, but I Don’t Believe in Eternal Hell… by Michael
