As part of the program, Mar Engr. Murtaza Reza delivered a meaningful discussion on the importance and values of Ramadan, highlighting themes of patience, self-discipline, compassion, and social responsibility. This milestone event hosted representatives from various sectors of the maritime industry, including shipowners, management, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), classification societies, and more. We were honored to welcome Mr. Chen Kit Jam, Senior Deputy Director (Shipping) of MPA, who joined us as Guest of Honor in recognizing the incredible achievements of Bangladeshi mariners.
The weekend was filled with insightful discussions on the future of the maritime industry, safety protocols, and celebrations of BMCS’s remarkable achievements over the last decade!

The celebration kicked off with a Professional Seminar at HortPark, Singapore, from 3 PM to 6 PM. The seminar featured insightful discussions on key industry topics such as the Shipping Net Zero ’50 Strategy, the role of alternate fuels, the future of maritime education and training, and how Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) are driving the autonomous revolution in maritime shipping.
The Inauguration Ceremony took place from 7 PM to 10:30 PM, bringing together mariners and their families for an evening filled with cultural performances, networking, and fun. Participants from both local and overseas performed musical acts, making it a delightful night of entertainment and great food.
•*5𝙩𝙝 𝙊𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙗𝙚𝙧 2024 :
The second day was dedicated to outdoor fun at the Sports Fiesta, held at SIA Cricket Ground from 8 AM to 1 PM. The event featured exciting activities like the Pillow Passing Competition for ladies, Kids Run, Marble Race, Cricket Match between BMCS members and overseas guests, and a thrilling Tug of War. These activities fostered camaraderie and team spirit, bringing joy to all participants.
Later in the evening, the highly anticipated Gala Dinner took place at the Orchid Country Club from 7 PM to 11 PM. With over 200 Bangladeshi families and 524 distinguished guests in attendance, the gala was a night of celebration and recognition. Mr. Chen Kit Jam praised the significant contributions of Bangladeshi mariners to the global maritime industry. Discussions on maritime safety and the challenges faced by the shipping industry were also key highlights, along with a strong emphasis on recent tragedies in the Bangladesh shipping industry and the importance of safety and accountability.
The Gala Dinner was filled with cultural performances, celebrating the rich heritage of the Bangladeshi maritime community.

It concluded with closing remarks from BMCS General Secretary Mar. Engr. Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain, who expressed heartfelt thanks to everyone for their gracious presence and participation. The event was beautifully hosted by Capt. Ghazi Abu Taher, adding charm and professionalism to the occasion.

The final day featured a Breakfast & Networking Session at the SIA Restaurant at 8:30 AM, where professionals shared insights and fostered connections within the industry. The reunion concluded with a city tour around Singapore, showcasing its beautiful landmarks to visitors.
BMCS seamlessly organized the event under the theme “Celebrating a Decade of Excellence”, commemorating its remarkable 10th anniversary (2014-2024). Attendees praised the arrangements and enjoyed reconnecting with alumni from the Bangladeshi maritime fraternity. It was truly a weekend to remember!
In August 2024, the Bangladesh Mariners Community of Singapore (BMCS) once again showcased its commitment to humanitarian causes by raising funds to support the victims of the devastating floods in Bangladesh. Through the collective efforts of its members, BMCS successfully raised a total of SGD 4,200, equivalent to BDT 375,900. The entire amount was donated to provide immediate relief to the affected communities under the banner of “Bangladeshi Mariners.”
The fundraising initiative was a remarkable display of solidarity and compassion by the BMCS community. Spearheaded by young volunteers from the BMA (Bangladesh Marine Academy) batches 50 to 56, along with the support of members from MFA (Marine Fisheries Academy) and IMA (Institute of Marine Affairs), the donation drive aimed to bring much-needed assistance to those impacted by the severe flooding in various regions of Bangladesh.
The SGD 4,200 raised was directly allocated toward relief efforts, including the distribution of essential supplies such as food, water, clothing, and temporary shelter for the displaced. The funds were utilized efficiently through reliable local channels, ensuring that aid reached the most vulnerable individuals in the affected areas.
This initiative not only provided immediate relief to flood victims but also reflected the deep-rooted sense of responsibility within the BMCS community toward supporting their fellow countrymen in times of need. The young volunteers from the BMA 50 to 56 batches, MFA, and IMA played a crucial role in organizing and executing the donation drive, highlighting the strength of collaboration and leadership among the younger generation of mariners.
The financial assistance provided by BMCS made a tangible difference in the lives of many flood-affected families. The donation helped alleviate the hardships faced by those who had lost their homes, livelihoods, and access to basic necessities due to the catastrophic floods. In a time of despair, the contribution from BMCS brought hope and relief to the affected communities, further strengthening the bond between mariners and their homeland.
The Bangladesh Flood Victims Donation is a testament to BMCS’s unwavering dedication to social welfare and humanitarian causes. BMCS extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the members who contributed generously to this noble cause. Their efforts reflect the core values of BMCS—empathy, solidarity, and a strong commitment to helping those in need.
BMCS remains committed to continuing its efforts in supporting vulnerable communities both in Bangladesh and beyond, with future initiatives aimed at creating a positive and lasting impact on the lives of those affected by natural disasters and other crises.
In February 2023, the Bangladesh Mariners Community of Singapore (BMCS) initiated a humanitarian drive to support the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria. In response to the disaster, BMCS members came together to raise a significant sum of SGD 12,750.
Distribution of Funds:
The funds raised were thoughtfully allocated to provide both immediate relief and long-term assistance to those affected by the earthquake. The donation was divided into two parts:
- Essential Items (SGD 7,073):
A portion of the funds, totaling SGD 7,073, was used to purchase essential relief items such as blankets, food supplies, clothing, and medical necessities. These goods were handed over to the relevant authorities in Singapore, ensuring they reached the earthquake victims through coordinated and reliable channels. - Monetary Donation (SGD 5,677):
The remaining balance of SGD 5,677 was donated to the Singapore Red Cross, a trusted organization actively working on the ground in Turkey and Syria to deliver critical aid to the affected regions. This contribution was part of a broader global effort to provide food, shelter, medical care, and other necessary services to survivors.
The BMCS community demonstrated a strong spirit of solidarity and generosity, with members across all ranks and backgrounds contributing to this noble cause. This fundraising effort underscores the community’s commitment to providing aid in times of crisis, regardless of geographical boundaries.

এমবিবিএস পরীক্ষা দুরূহতর ঠেকে। তারপরও মেহেরজান কে পাবার আশায় মন প্রান লাগিয়ে দেই। ইচ্ছে হয় বলি, তোমার সকল আঁধার আমাকে দাও, আমার রাতের তারার সব আলো তোমাকে দিলাম। নিচতলার উঠানে গোলাপ গাছ গুলো শীতে বেদম দোলে। সেই সাথে দোলে আমার আলুথালু মন। মেহেরজান মাঝে মাঝে গোলাপ গাছে পানি দিতে আসে। আমি সেই বিকেলের জন্য ব্যাকুল হয়ে থাকি।
কোনসময় উঠানে দেখা হলে কথা হয় । সে শুধু পুতুলের মত মাথা নাড়ে। হু হাঁ জবাব দেয়। ইচ্ছে হয় বলি, মাত্র এলে, আরেকটু থাকো, শ্বাস নেই প্রান ভরে।
বাবা হয়ত ঘুম থেকে উঠে পড়েছেন—
বাবা বোধহয় ডাকছেন—
বাবা হয়ত এসে পড়েছেন—
বাবার চা খাবার সময় হয়েছে—
এই বাহানায় সে আকুল প্রেমিককে অকুল পাথারে দাঁড় করিয়ে পালিয়ে যা্য।
একদিন বললাম,
– তুমি এত কম কথা বল কেন ?
– আমার সাথে আপনি বেশিক্ষণ কথা চালিয়ে যেতে পারবেন না, তাই বলি না।
– তাই বুঝি? বল দেখি।
– আচ্ছা বলেনতো কোন বাচ্চার কোন বাবা মা থাকে না।
– এটা আবার কি? মাথায় কিছু আসছেনাতো।
– চৌবাচ্চার।
মেহেরজান হাসছে। ওর হাসিটা সারা জীবনের জন্য আমার মনে গেঁথে গেল।
তার বাবাকে মানে খো্রশেদ সাহেবকে সে দেখি যমের মত ভয় পায়। আমিও এক আধটু পাইনা- তা নয়। দৃঢ় ব্যক্তিত্বের লোকটাকে শুধু ভয় নয়, শ্রদ্ধাও হয়। খোরশেদ চাচার সাথে কালে ভদ্রে দেখা হয়।
একবার মা জানতে চেয়েছিলেন, আপনার সামর্থ্য আছে, নিজেই কেন বাড়ি বানালেন না? চিরস্থায়ী একটা ঠিকানা হত।
জবাবে বলেছেন, মাটির উপর ঠিকানা চিরস্থায়ী হয় নাকি। আসল বাড়ি মাটির নিচে। সাড়ে তিন হাত। ওইটুকুই যথেষ্ট। ওখানে ভাল আলো বাতাস পেলেই হবে। গভীর তত্ত্বকথা। গোলাপ আর গোলাপবালাকে নিয়ে আমার রাত আর দিন কাটে। যেদিন কথা হয় জীবনটাকে মসলিন রুমালের মত মনে হয়।
একদিন ছাদে হাঁটছি, হটাত দেখি গোলাপবালা নিচের উঠানে । মেয়ে যতই গোলাপের দিকে ঝুঁকছে, বান্দা ততই কার্নিশের দিকে ঝুঁকছে। তাকে দেখছি আর দেখছি। জীবনীশক্তি সঞ্চয় করছি। নেশার মতো , মারিজুয়ানা, এলএসডির মত সে আমার স্বপ্নে, রক্তে মিশে থাকে। দিনরাত। অবিরত।
-কি দেখ?
গোলাপ বনে দৈত্য। আমার বড় ভাবির একমাত্র ভাই। দোতলায় আমি, মা, বড় ভাই-ভাবী এই নিয়ে আমার পরিবার। বড় ভাই রাজধানীতে চাকুরী করেন। ভাবীসহ মাঝে মাঝে চট্টগ্রামে আসেন। তখন ভাবীর ভাই জাফরের আনাগোনা হয় এই বাসায়। বললাম,
– গোলাপ দেখি। বাগান ভর্তি গোলাপ।
– গোলাপ নাকি গোলাপবালা? চারদিক যা গরম পড়েছে, তোমার তো এসি কামরায় গা এলানোর কথা। ছাদে কি?
– আমার ছাদে আমি ইচ্ছা করলেই আসতে পারি, তাই না জাফর ভাই?
– মেয়েটা সুন্দর আছে। আসতে যেতে দেখেছি। ভাল লেগেছে। জানতো, তোমার ভাবী আমার বিয়ের জন্য উঠে পড়ে লেগেছে। আপাই বলেছে আমাকে এই মেয়েটার কথা। ফিগারটাও দারুণ, কি বল?
– তুই একটা লুচ্চা।
– কি বিড়বিড় কর? ঝেড়ে কাশ মিয়া।
– ঝেড়ে থুথু দেবো তোরে।
– আরে মিয়া জোরে কও।
– আপনার ধারণা- আপনি বলবেন আর মেয়েটাও সম্মতি দিয়ে দেবে?
– দেবে না মানে, ওর বাপ দেবে। পার্ক করা গাড়ীটা দেখেছ? মিডল ক্লাস মেয়েরা কী চায় আমার জানা আছে।
– তুই একটা শুয়োর।
– কী বললে তালতো, শুনতে পাই নাই।
– আপনার ধারনা ভুল। এরকম কিছুই হবে না।
– শোন, আমি হচ্ছি জাইল্লা। ক্লাস ফাইভ থেকেই জাল ছোঁড়ার অভ্যাস। কারেন্ট জালে আটকাবো এই মেয়েটারে। বুঝলা তালতো ?
মেহেরজান বৃক্ষপ্রেমী। নীচের তলার ঊঠানের একপাশে গোলাপসহ কয়েকরকমের গাছগাছালী আর পাতাবাহার। গরমে দোলে, শীতেও দোলে। এক বিকেলে খোরশেদ চাচার সাথে দেখা।
– কেমন আছো বল। ডাক্তারি পাস করে ফেলো তাড়াতাড়ি। তোমাকে বিনা ফি”তে ভিজিট দেবো, কেমন?
– নিশ্চয়ই, আপনি কেমন আছেন চাচা?
– বেশি ভালো না। তুলসী পাতা নিতে এলাম। মেহেরজান লাগিয়েছে। খুব উপকারী, জানো। পানিতে সিদ্ধ করে অল্প মধু মিশিয়ে খাই। ভাবছি মা মরা মেয়েটাকে কোন ডাক্তারের সাথে বিয়ে দেব। এত অসুখ বিসুখ লেগে থাকে আমার, জামাই বাবাজি ফ্রিতে চিকিৎসা করবে, কি বল।
মেহেরজান, গোলাপ আর আমার প্রেম, এই নিয়ে জীবনের চন্দন মাখা বিকেলগুলো চলে যেতে পারতো বাদামের খোসা উড়িয়ে উড়িয়ে। হল না তো।
মেডিকেলে একটা সংবাদ ছড়িয়ে পড়ছে দ্রুত। নতুন এক ভাইরাস সংক্রমণে চীনে কয়েকজন প্রাণ হারিয়েছে যেটা খুবই ভীতিকর বলে চিকিৎসকেরা উল্লেখ করছেন। এই ভাইরাসটি প্যাথোজেন পরিবারের এবং এর নাম করোনা ভাইরাস। রেস্পিরেটরি লক্ষণ ছাড়াও জ্বর , কাশি, শ্বাস প্রশ্বাসের সমস্যাই মূলত প্রধান লক্ষণ। এবং এটি ফুসফুস আক্রমণ করে।
উহান শহরে দিনদিন ভাইরাসটির বিস্তার বাড়ছে। শহরটি থেকে ইতিমধ্যে বহির্গামী বাস, ট্রেন এবং বিমান চলাচল নিষিদ্ধ। উহান কে কার্যত বিচ্ছিন্ন করে রাখা হয়েছে। আপাতত মেডিকেল জগতে এই ভাইরাসে আক্রান্ত হলে চিকিৎসা নেই। তাই রোগ প্রতিরোধের উপর জোর দেয়া হচ্ছে।
রাতে ঘুমাতে গেলে জানালা দিয়ে চোখ চলে যায় বহুদূর। জানিনা কোন কাল মেঘ ধেয়ে আসছে পুরা বিশ্বের দিকে। ভাইরাসটি কি বাংলাদেশের আকাশে বাতাসেও ছড়িয়ে পড়বে ? মেহেরজানের শ্বাসের সাথে ঢুকে যাবে নাতো। ইদানিং মন খারাপ করে ঘুমাতে যাই। বহির্বিশ্বে নতুন রহস্যময় ভাইরাস, আর আমার ভিতরেও এক রহস্যময়ী ভাইরাস।
যেদিন তাকে দেখি, জীবনবোধ পাল্টে যায়। সকালটা অমলেট আর বিকালটা ঘিয়ে ভাজা হয়ে যায়।
কয়েক মাসের মধ্যেই চীনের অন্য শহরে এই ভাইরাসের প্রাদুর্ভাব বাড়ার সাথে সাথে থাইল্যান্ড, জাপান, কোরিয়াতেও সংক্রমণ নিশ্চিত হল। ঢাকার রোগতত্ত্ব, রোগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও গবেষণা ইন্সটিটিউট অর্থাৎ আইইডিসিআর থেকে সকলকে সতর্কতা অবলম্বনের কথা বলা হচ্ছে। দেশে এখনো আক্রান্তের খবর পাওয়া না গেলেও স্বাস্থ্যকর্মীদের প্রশিক্ষণ ব্যবস্থা শুরু হয়েছে।
করোনা সংক্রমণে মৃত্যুহার বাড়তে থাকায় একসময় দেশে মেডিকেলে যারা শ্বাসতন্ত্রের সমস্যা, জ্বর, সর্দি, গলা ব্যথার সমস্যা নিয়ে আসছে তাদের ভালভাবে পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা শুরু হল। একপর্যায়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, ব্রিটেন, ব্রাজিল, ভারত, পাকিস্তানের সংক্রমণ ও মৃত্যুহার আতংকজনক হয়ে দাঁড়াল।
জীবনের রং ধূসর আর চন্দন বিকেলগুলো পানসে । যখন শীত বিদায় নিয়েছে, হটাত করোনায় আক্রান্ত অসংখ্য ব্যক্তি শনাক্ত আর মৃত্যুতে দেশবাসী থমকে গেল। মেডিকেলে, শহরে, আকাশে, বাতাসে, কফির টেবিলে, সংসদে, রেস্তোরাঁর কোলাহলে একটাই গুঞ্জন- কোভিড- ১৯। আইইডিসিআর হটলাইন খুলেছে। উপসর্গ দেখা দিলেই যোগাযোগের আহ্বান।
আকাশে বাতাসে ভেসে বেড়াচ্ছে দুটো শব্দ, কোয়ারেন্টিন ও আইসোলেশন । এই ভাইরাসের সংক্রমণ ঠেকাতে অনেক দেশ কোয়ারেন্টিনের আশ্রয় নিচ্ছে, বিশেষ করে পুরো ইতালিকে অবরুদ্ধ করার ঘোষণা এসেছে। মেডিকেল থেকে ফিরে বিকেলে উঠানে কখনো কখনো মেহেরজানের সাথে দেখা।
– কেমন আছ মেহেরজান ?
– বাবার ডায়াবেটিস আছে জানেনতো। নয়নতারা ফুল নিতে এসেছি । পানিতে ভিজিয়ে রেখে রোজ বাবাকে খাওয়াই । ডায়াবেটিস কমে নাকি এতে। খেতে সামান্য তিতা লাগে এই যা।
– ভালইতো, চালিয়ে যাও।
– দিনকাল ভাল না, সাবধানে থাকবেন, কোভিড বাড়ছে সবখা্নে।
– ঠিক আছে, তোমরাও প্রয়োজন ছাড়া ঘর থেকে বের হবে না। চাচাকে বলবে যা লাগবে বাজার সওদা, ওষুধপত্র আমাকে বলতে।
– আপনাকেই বলব বাজার সওদা, ওষুধপত্র সব। কিন্ত বাবা কি কোন কথা শুনেন? সুযোগ পেলেই গলির মুখে চলে যান।
– তুমি আটকে রাখবে।
– ঠিক আছে জাঁহাপনা।
– গুড। এইতো কি সুন্দর কথা বলে যাচ্ছ।
– আচ্ছা বলেন দেখি, কোন চুড়ি মেয়েরা পড়ে না?
– জানিনা।
– খিচুড়ি। সেই যে বলেছিলাম, আমার সাথে বেশিক্ষণ কথা চালাতে পারবেন না।
– পাগলি।
বলে আমি গভীর চোখে মেহেরজানকে দেখে নেই । মেয়েটা আমার দিকে তাকিয়ে আছে। কি অতল মায়া সেই চোখে। আমি মনে মনে বললাম, তোমার সব আঁধার আমাকে দাও আর আমার রাতের সব তারার আলো তোমাকে দিলাম। নিয়ে নাও মেয়ে।
বিকেলতো নয় যেন চন্দন বাতাসের সুগন্ধি কৌটো। যেদিন তাকে দেখি, নতুন করে জীবনীশক্তি সঞ্চয় হয়। ইচ্ছে হয় কানে কানে বলি, মেয়ে, তোমার জন্য আদিনাথের পাহাড়ে উঠতে পারি এক লাফেতে।
দিন যায়। চতুর্দিক করোনা কথন। বিষবাস্পে ভরে গেছে পৃথিবী। চরম মহামারী। আমরা বাঁচবো কি? যখন তখন কেউ আর ঘর ছেড়ে বের হচ্ছে না। মেহেরজান কে দেখাও দুষ্কর হয়ে উঠল।
পাগলের মত বারান্দা, ছাদ, সিঁড়ি, ব্যালকনি, সবখানে দৌড়াই। কোথাও দেখিনা। পরীক্ষার বছর শুরু হয়। ঘুম হয় না। দুঃস্বপ্ন ছড়ায়। জীবনঘাতি কোভিডে বিপর্যস্ত জনজীবন।
এই কঠিন সময়ে কানাডা থেকে মেহেরজানের একমাত্র বড় ভাই এলেন। শাহেদ ভাইকে দেখে ওরা যেন নতুন জীবনীশক্তি পেয়েছে । মেহেরজানের দেখা পাওয়া যায়না। মন খারাপের দিনগুলো উলের বলের মত ছড়াতে থাকে, লম্বা হতে থাকে।
একসময় সব শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। কোভিডের উপসর্গ, বিস্তার, সংক্রমণ, মৃত্যুহার বেড়েই চলেছে। সরকারী ছুটি বাড়ল। গণ পরিবহণ অবরুদ্ধ। এক এলাকা থেকে আরেক এলাকায় যাওয়া নিষেধ। দেশ বিদেশের অনেক ফ্লাইট বন্ধ।
এরপর একদিন দেশজুড়ে লকডাউন। কঠিন সময়, কাটে না। পাহাড় সম, হাঁটে না। শাহেদ ভাইয়ের সাথে মাঝেমাঝে দেখা হয়, কথাও হয়।
বিজ্ঞানী আর চিকিৎসকদেরকে, শক্তিধর আর ক্ষমতাশালী দেশগুলোকে কোভিড ১৯ বৃদ্ধাঙ্গুলি দেখিয়ে যাচ্ছে । আমরা সেই ব্যপারে কথা বলি। বহির্বিশ্বে ,শহরে শহরে, ঘরে ঘরে, কান্নার রোল উঠছে, কফিন তৈরি হছে অগণিত। আমরা সেই ব্যাপারে কথা বলি।
তারপর একদিন। শাহেদ ভাই বললেন তার দেশে আসার উদ্দেশের কথা। কাছের বন্ধু, কানাডা প্রবাসী বন্ধু ইমনকে তিনি মেহেরজানের জীবনসঙ্গী নির্বাচন করেছেন। শুভ কাজটা পরিস্থিতি ভাল হলেই সেরে ফেলতে চান।
কেউ কী এভাবে সামনে থেকে বুকে ছুরি মারে? আখের ছোবড়ার মত কেউ যেন ছুঁড়ে ফেলেছে আমার ভালবাসা। জীবনের সুমিষ্ট পঙক্তিগুলো এখন অচল পদাবলী।
মেহেরজানের দেখা নাই। ‘হৃদয় না জুড়াতে , হারাইয়া ফেলি চকিতে”
অস্থির দিন আর নিথর রাত। কাটে না, হাঁটে না।
মহামারীতে বিপর্যস্ত জীবন, স্বজনের দাফনে স্বজন সামিল হয় না, এমন যখন দুনিয়া, এক রাতে অসময়ে আমার দরজায় দারুণ করাঘাত। দরজা খুলেই অবাক। মেহেরজান। এত রাতে?
– বাসায় চলেন মারুফ ভাই, দুদিন আগে থেকে বাবার ঠাণ্ডা লেগেছিল, কাশি ছিল। আজ জ্বর এসেছে, খুব অস্থির করছেন। জলদি বাসায় চলেন।
আমি আর মেহেরজান মুখোমুখি। এই লহমায় যদি পার হয়ে যেত গোটা জীবন। সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা দিয়ে নিবিড় পযর্বেক্ষনে রাখা হল চাচাকে। আমার আন্তরিকতা আর একনিষ্ঠতা দেখে শাহেদ ভাই কৃতজ্ঞতা দেখাতে ভুললেন না।
ঔষধ চালু করার পর দুই দিনেও বিশেষ রকমফের না হওয়াতে হাসপাতালে নেয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত হল। চাচার শ্বাসকষ্ট শুরু হলে, শাহেদ ভাই যখন এ্যাম্বুলেন্সের জন্য ঘর বাহির করছেন, আমি চাচার পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি।
– চাচা, জোরে শ্বাস নেন। সাহস হারাবেন না। সব ঠিক হয়ে যাবে।
তারপর— সেই ক্ষণ ।
তিনি আমার হাতটা ধরলেন। জোড়ে জোড়ে শ্বাস নিতে নিতে বললেন,
– তোমার চেয়ে বেশি আর কেউ আমার মেয়েটাকে ভালবাসবে না। ওকে তুমি দেখো।
– আপনি কথা বলবেন না। বুক ভরে শ্বাস নেয়ার চেষ্টা করেন। আমি আছি চাচা।
আমার সাথে চাচার এটাই ছিল শেষ কথা। মেডিকেলের কাছাকাছি আসতেই উনার ভীষণরকম শ্বাসকষ্ট শুরু। বুঝতে পারছিলাম, কঠিন সময়ের দিকে এগোচ্ছি। মহামারীতে চাচা আমাদের ছেড়ে চলে গেলেন।
শুধু আমি নই। পুরা বিশ্ব থমকে গেছে। পরম শক্তিশালী দেশগুলোর মত অপারগতা আর অক্ষমতার লজ্জা নিয়ে ডুবে থাকি আকণ্ঠ।
এই মহামারিতে , সব দেশে, ব্যর্থতার শহরে, মফস্বলে, অলিতে গলিতে, পথে প্রান্তরে, প্রাসাদে, কুঠুরিতে কতই না ব্যক্ত অব্যক্ত গল্প আছে জীবনের। লাখো মানুষের।
হিসাব নাই। কতই না লাশ উঠেছে, কত চোখের পানি চোখেই শুকিয়েছে, কত রক্তের সম্পর্ক মুখ লুকিয়েছে, কত কবর লজ্জায় কবরে কেঁদেছে।
হিসাব নাই। লাশের পর লাশ। বাবার লাশ, চাচার লাশ, মায়ের লাশ, ভাইয়ের লাশ, সহপাঠীর লাশ, বন্ধুর লাশ—-
মৃত্যু একটা সংখ্যা মাত্র। মানুষের জন্য মানুষ কাঁদে। ব্যর্থতার গ্লানিতে অন্ধকার কাঁদে। কাঁদে শ্রাবণের আকাশ। ফুলেরা কাঁদে, কাঁদে পাতা, কাঁদে পাখি। বাইবেল কাঁদে, কাঁদে কুরআন। মহাভারত কাঁদে, কাঁদে ইতিহাস, কাঁদে বর্তমান।
তারপর একদিন অস্থির দিনলিপির এই নগরে, স্বল্প পরিসরে ইমনের সাথে মেহেরজানের শুভ পরিণয়।
মেহেরজান গোলাপ বাগানে আসে। ফুলগুলো ছুঁয়ে ছুঁয়ে দেখে। আমি দোতলার বারান্দা থেকে দেখি তার অনামিকায় জ্বলজ্বল করা আংটি।
জাফর ভাই একদিন বললেন, আমি তোমার চোখে যা দেখেছিলাম, সে জন্যই এখানে জাল বিছাই নাই। তুমি কেন আটকাতে পারলে না? বেরসিক জাইল্লা ।
অভিমান হয়, ঘরের ভেতরে না হয় কোন সাক্ষী ছিল না, তাই বলে মেহেরজান কি ভাইকে কিছুই বলতে পারতো না। কয়েকটা বছর অপেক্ষা করা এতই দুরূহ ছিল তাদের জন্য?
তারপর যেদিন তুমি চলে যাচ্ছিলে —- আরেকবার। শেষবার। মুখোমুখি।
মেহেরজান,
তুমি আমার চোখের দিকেই তাকিয়েছিলে। সর্বস্বান্তের মত আমি দাঁড়িয়ে। আমার চোখে জল।
বেশরমের মত একফোঁটা গাল বেয়ে টপকালো। সেটাও তুমি চেয়ে চেয়ে দেখলে।
দাবী রেখে বলতে পারি, এই সর্বস্বান্ত পথিককে, যে তোমার প্রেমে পথ হারিয়েছে, তাকে কোনদিন তুমি ভুলবে না।
বাজি রেখে বলতে পারি, অলস দুপুরে, অঝোর বৃষ্টির রাতে বা শীতের কনকন হাওয়ায় আমাকেই পাবে তুমি।
চলে যাও মেয়ে। আর একটু যদি দাঁড়িয়ে যাও, বাজি রেখে বলতে পারি, আমাকে ছেড়ে এক পাও যেতে পারবে না তুমি। বাজি। অনেক অনেক মাস পর—-
শহর পুরানো রূপে ফিরতে শুরু করে। মেহেরজানের চাকচিক্যময় আলোর শহরের কাছে আমার জীবন যেন পিদিম জ্বলা সাঁঝ। মেহেরজানের জন্য নায়াগ্রা ফলস আবিরাম ঝরে চলে।

]]>The word ‘maritime’ comes from the Latin word ‘maritimus,’ which means ‘of the sea.’ The day illuminates the role that every maritime officer, service agent, and seafarer plays in our individual lives. Life at sea is hard. Long hours, precarious pay, and the emotional toll of being separated from his family for months can be an intense challenge.
Decades after its establishment in 1958, the International Maritime Organization declared the last Thursday of every September as World Maritime Day. A theme is dedicated to the celebration each year. World Maritime Day is observed to make the voices of seafarers heard and understood. Life at sea is risky and comes with brand new challenges every day. The well-being and security of our seafarers are instrumental to the success of the global economy. For long, their tireless work has been taken for granted, IMO seeks to change that.
It’s a unique day to highlight the maritime aspects for the human on earth by the human at sea! You may don a seafarer’s cap and put on safety shoes because it’s time to learn about and celebrate World Maritime Day! On last year’s World Maritime Day on 29 Sep 2021, the IMO HQ and iconic buildings, bridges, maritime ports, ships, monuments, museums and other landmarks around the world were lit blue as part of efforts to highlight seafarers and their core role in shipping and its future. Like the last year, there will be blue-lights again to highlight the 1.9 million Seafarers’ core contribution in transporting essential commodities like food, fuel, medicine and household goods for the 7.8 billion dwellers of the Earth.
IMO Secretary-General would like to extend the invitation to IMO Member States, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations in consultative status to join in this annual initiative by lighting up in “blue” or “blue and green” colours their most iconic buildings, bridges, maritime ports, ships, monuments, museums and other emblematic landmarks on the occasion of the 2022 World Maritime Day celebration.

The World Maritime Day 2022 theme is ‘New technologies for greener shipping’. It reflects the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind. The theme provides an opportunity to focus on the importance of a sustainable maritime sector and the need to build back better and greener in a post pandemic world. IMO actively supports a greener transition of the shipping sector into a sustainable future, and showcases maritime innovation, research and development, and the demonstration and deployment of new technologies.
The 2022 theme will allow for a range of activities to delve into specific topics related to promotion of inclusive innovation and uptake of new technologies to support the needs for a greener transition of the maritime sector, especially in the context of developing countries, and in particular the small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs).
The theme is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 13 and 14 on climate action and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources; SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure; and SDG 17, which highlights the importance of partnerships and implementation to achieve these goals.
IMO’s Department of Partnerships and Projects (DPP) was established in 2020 to serve as the gateway for developing partnership opportunities with a wide range of external partners, including IMO Member States, UN agencies, financial institutions, NGOs, IGOs and the private sector.
History of World Maritime Day
More than 80% of the Global trade is transported through the oceanic blue highways by international shipping with over 75,000 large vessels. It means that most of the consumer goods that enter business and homes all over the world were shipped to get there. As the most affordable and efficient form of transportation for goods, maritime activity continues to be a vital part of the world’s trade industry.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) began its development in 1948 as a specialized agency of the United Nations. Taking some time to get established, the organization then entered into force on March 17, 1958. At its beginning, the IMO had only 21 member states who took part, which is a large contrast to the present day when it now boasts the 175 Member States.
The IMO focuses on environmental issues, legal issues, safety, maritime efficiency and technical cooperation. They work together to prevent marine pollution from ships, create safety measures to avoid accidents and damage, build more efficiency in shipping, with the IMO slogan, “Safe, secure and efficient shipping on clean oceans”, members commit to taking care of the natural resources as well as working in cooperation for the safety of everyone. This includes encouraging each member to promote legislation against piracy and other dangerous activity on the sea.
Twenty years after it moved into action, the anniversary of the IMO was celebrated as the first World Maritime Day in March of 1978. Celebrated annually after that, eventually the day was moved to the end of September, usually celebrated on the last Thursday. Established by the United Nations in 1978, World Maritime Day is meant to raise awareness about the importance of the shipping industry and the vital contribution it makes to places all over the globe. Each year World Maritime Day has its own theme that is meant to encourage and motivate those within the shipping industry as well as offering opportunities to tell others about it. - 1912: The Titanic Disaster – The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention is organized by the United Nations after the Titanic disaster.

- Their situation needs attention: Thousands of seafarers are stranded at the sea, tied up in unsustainable contracts. The International Maritime Organization seeks to push the governments to designate shipping industry personnel as essential workers.
- We need a sustainable shipping industry: The deteriorating working condition of seafarers is dangerous and sustainable. World Maritime Day seeks to bring attention to their most immediate concerns. The quest towards a safe and secure shipping industry will benefit us all.

- Learn about life at the sea: Did you know that over 90% of ships have no communication with the world when they are out at sea? Or that an average maritime worker makes somewhere between $45,000 to $60,000 per annum? There are fascinating things to be learned about life at sea, and no better day to do it than World Maritime Day.
- Thank a seafarer: The International Maritime Organization accepts letters of appreciation from well-wishers all year around. Let the maritime workers know that you appreciate their service and are praying for their safety.

Living by the water can be delightful for a number of reasons and the accessibility to ships and maritime museums is an important one. Many port cities offer views of old ships that have been rescued and put on display for visitors to see. Others might offer guided tours with interesting information to learn about ships and boats first hand.

Watch a Film about Seafarers
One interesting way to celebrate World Maritime Day might be to watch an action or adventure film around the theme of sailors and seafarers. Check out some of these interesting tales of the sea:
- The Bounty (1984). Starring Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson, this movie tells the story of a crew that gets tired of their captain’s harshness and a mutiny arises on the HMS Bounty. It’s based on the true story of a British sea vessel from 1789.
- Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003). Russell Crowe offers a stunning performance in this epic film about the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Crowe’s character, Captain Jack Aubrey, and his crew are sent to hunt down a French vessel that is near the South American coast.
- The Poseidon Adventure (1972). This classic film tells the story of a passenger ship that is on her way to being retired when it is hit by a tidal wave, turning everything upside down. The hero of the film is Reverend Scott, played by Gene Hackman, who leads the passengers to try to find safety. This film has an all-star, ensemble cast with five different Oscar winners.
- Captain Phillips (2009). Telling the true tale of a merchant mariner who was taken hostage by Somali pirates, these film stars Tom Hanks as the title character who makes a brave effort to save his crew.

Whether it’s visiting an aquarium, watching an old movie about seafarers or enjoying a lunch of fish and chips, World Maritime Day is all about raising awareness. Teachers can have a lesson about the sea at school, assign a reading of Moby Dick, or have students write an essay about the importance of sea travel and trade.

Enjoy a little taste of life at sea by taking a ride on a boat in honour of World Maritime Day. Although it’s more likely for a person to be able to secure passage on a cruise ship or a local tour boat rather than a shipping vessel, it would still be a fun way to enjoy being on the water.

A key takeaway was the need to not only connect with people but also to follow up and maintain offline and online partnerships to build lasting business relationships.
The trainer, Lara, a management consultant and entrepreneur, brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to the session. Her extensive professional journey, which spans from the UK to Mongolia and Australia, helped enrich the workshop with real-world examples and practical advice. Lara’s background in economics from University College, London, coupled with her reputation as a “super connector,” made her an ideal trainer for this topic. Participants lauded her ability to inspire transformation and provide actionable strategies for improving their professional networks.
The workshop’s structure included:

- Effective engagement at networking events.
- Following up to enhance relationships.

BMCS members commented that the workshop would be extremely useful for their professional growth, equipping them with the skills necessary for effective networking in both personal and business contexts.
