We are seeking creative and passionate applicants to be part of our tight-knit team to help develop original research on human rights issues in Bahrain and the Arab Gulf states. As a research intern at BIRD, you will learn how to draft briefing papers, conduct research in a team environment and work towards a common goal of achieving human rights for all. You will participate in the development of both short and long-term projects, generating research for our campaigns and advocacy. You will also learn about how human rights work at an international level, at the United Nations and within the European Union, and the impact of human rights policies in international relations.

Duration: November 2015 – January 2016, with possibility of renewal

Closing Date: 30 October 2015

Intern travel and lunch expenses will be paid by BIRD.

Role

  • Prepare first drafts of external communications, including blog posts, press releases, and articles for publication.
  • Conduct primary and secondary research on a variety of human rights and international relations-related topics.
  • Assist advocacy team with preperation of written materials.
  • Research and draft legislative fact sheets and other Parliament related materials.
  • Track Bahrain-related news, legislation, and statements by policymakers, the UK government, and the United Nations.
  • Assist in social media campaigns and the drafting of external communications.
  • Support mobilization of grassroots on the issue of human rights in Bahrain.
  • Assist with administrative duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Essential

  • Be currently enrolled or have completed degree in a related subject e.g. law, international relations, Middle Eastern studies, criminal justice, politics and policy, etc.
  • Demonstrate superb writing skills.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Excellent communication & networking skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a small team effectively.
  • Demonstrable interest in universal human rights and the Gulf region.
  • Experience working with twitter and social media campaigns.

Desirable

  • Language skills: French, Spanish or Arabic.
  • Past experience in working for an NGO, charity or with the UK Parliament.

As a legal intern at BIRD, you will help prepare cases for submission to relevant UN human rights special procedures.

Duration: November 2015 – January 2016, with possibility of renewal

Intern travel and lunch expenses will be paid by BIRD.

Role

  • Identify and research relevant domestic and international law pertaining to issues in Bahrain.
  • Prepare client complaints for United Nations documentation.
  • Prepare research memoranda on United Nations systems.
  • Attend and take notes from conferences and events of interest to BIRD.
  • Assist with client interviews as necessary.
  • Assist the advocacy and research teams as necessary.
  • Research on international law topics related to Bahrain.
  • Assist with administrative duties as required.

Qualifications and Skills

We would expect the successful candidate to have the following:

Essential

  • Be currently enrolled in or have completed a law-related degree.
  • Have taken, or be in the process of taking, a course on public international law and/or international human rights law, or be demonstrably familiar with the concepts of public international law and/or international human rights law.
