Here’s an explanation of all of these:
Overview, 3301, Chikuwa cheese burger, Mevius cigarettes, Super Dry, More Japanese Alcohol, Yanineko’s apartment, Shibata’s Japanese subtitles, Koudan-Gumi, Fashion Center Nekomura, Yanineko’s ashtray, Shizue’s house, JaKusoBuBuRa, Tore-daka, Moré-daka, Higuma-don, Denki-Anma, Ohya’s truck, Chiebukuro-min, Kenzuishi, Matsuo Bashou, Mercari
I have an article where I endlessly ramble about Yanineko and Saizeriya.
For some reason, visitors from overseas spend more than seven minutes reading it. I feel like even if you throw that article into a translator, it doesn’t really get across properly. But I’m really happy that it made people interested in Japanese family restaurants!
So, I decided to explain some of the things that appear in the manga that might be difficult for foreign readers to understand, in English.
I did my best to write only the truth.
If anything is wrong, it’s probably a translation error caused by my fucking English grades.
I just hope you can figure out what I’m trying to say and that it comes across the way I intended.
Yanineko is basically the average Weekly Young Magazine reader.
Cool adults read Big Comic Spirits or Morning.
Sure, there are some rich guys like Ohya and creative types like Tatsuro among Weekly Young Magazine readers, but most of them are losers living lazy, self-indulgent lives.
How do I know? Because I’m one of those losers myself!
The only difference is that, unlike Yani-neko, I don’t have any friends.
Nanmonee! Owatteru! Warattara Korosuzo!
“3301” is a secret code for ordering draft beer at Saizeriya, one of the most popular restaurant chains in Japan.
You either hand a piece of paper with “3301” written on it to the staff, or enter the number on the tablet to place your order.
Saizeriya is cheap and delicious, so it’s extremely popular with our fellow Owatteru who want to drink during the daytime, regardless of their age or gender.
“3401” means a glass of red wine.
Saizeriya is fucking awesome, so if you come to Japan, you should definitely give it a try.
As soon as you sit down, order “3301” and wet your throat.
Then order “2101” and “1410” as snacks and wash them down with “3406”.
Now the alcohol has set you free.
For the grand finale, I recommend “3201”.
“3406” is 500ml of white wine. 400 yen… $2.60… A Big Mac is 500 yen. Can you fucking believe it?
Check out this link for the other numbers.
Other than the Nyagamihara location, Saizeriya restaurants are non-smoking.
Saizeriya is extremely popular and often crowded, so it can take a while for your food to arrive. It’s a good idea to order things ahead of time before you actually need them.
Stay away from places with names written in romaji, like “WAGYU” or “SUKIYAKI”.
The places aimed at tourists are mostly pretty mediocre, so try going into one of the chain restaurants where us Japanese hang out.
The staff are all very friendly, but they can be a little shy and don’t speak English, so use a translation app if you need to communicate with them.
Japanese doesn’t distinguish between L and R sounds.
And yet, Japanese English education constantly lectures us that our L and R pronunciation is completely wrong and that foreigners won’t understand us unless we get it right.
No wonder we become so shy and self-conscious when we’re around native English speakers.
However, when a foreigner speaks broken Japanese, Japanese people tend to react positively. We think, “Wow, they actually took the time to learn Japanese!”
It’s only teachers who make a big deal about pronunciation. Everyone else is fucking tired of hearing about it.
Japanese people love both McDonald’s and chikuwa, but we don’t put chikuwa in hamburgers.
This refers to McDonald’s Chicken Cheese Burger.
It’s sometimes shortened to “Chiki Chee.”
They call it “Chiku Chee” in the manga too, right?
The Chicken Cheese Burger is a cheap menu item unique to Japan.
For the price of one Big Mac, you can buy two of them.
It’s a lifesaver for broke folks like Nya and the gang.
Mevius, the cigarettes smoked by Yani-neko, are the best-selling cigarettes in Japan.
They used to be called Mild Seven.
That’s the “Maisen” Ohya’s dad was talking about.
Kansai-neko smokes Pianissimo, a long, slim cigarette that looks like something a fashionable young woman who only drinks mineral water would smoke.
Hame-neko uses a heated tobacco product.
Most of the smokers you see out on the street are using this type. The smell is pretty fucking tolerable, after all.
Everyone smokes it because it’s convenient, but people also think of it as a pacifier for adults.
Tatsuro’s choice of Hi-Lite Menthol is pretty fucking classy.
Hi-Lite is the cigarette Inspector Zenigata was smoking in The Castle of Cagliostro.
It has a delicious, wine-like grape flavor.
It used to be popular, but these days, you rarely see anyone smoking either the Hi-Lite that Zenigata smoked or the Hi-Lite Menthol that Tatsuro smokes.
The Uruma cigarettes smoked by Kansai-neko’s new friend are pretty rare.
You’ll only find them at some pretty hardcore tobacco shops.
The slightly expensive cigarettes Yani-neko splurged on are Long-Peace.
You know the ones with the yellow package and the dove on it?
They’re the best-tasting cigarettes out there.
They’re hugely popular with old-school Japanese guys.
It’s interesting how much personality you can see in each character’s choice of cigarette.
Going off on a tangent here, but in manga about Japanese biker gangs, the delinquents are always smoking Seven Stars. Mild Seven basically means “milder than Seven Stars.”
And there’s also “Kan-Peace,” a canned tobacco product made with unfiltered, straight-cut cigarettes.
This is the kind of cigarette you save for special occasions.
Kan-Peace will show up in Yanineko eventually, so stay tuned!
That’s the beer with the distinctive silver can that Aru-neko was drinking.
It’s Super Dry, a beer with a name that Japanese people think sounds perfectly normal, but foreigners apparently find it hilariously weird.
Now that you mention it, yeah, it is a pretty weird name.
It’s made by Asahi Breweries.
If you like crisp, dry-tasting beer, this is basically the one to go for.
In Japan, we like our beer served ice-cold.
Ichiro Suzuki, who also had a successful career in MLB, appeared in TV commercials for Super Dry.
Johnny Depp even appeared in a TV commercial for it.
And the beer factory where everyone got into a brawl in Golden Kamuy belonged to Sapporo Breweries, so don’t get the two mixed up.
My English teacher from the US told me that Kirin Lager was the best-tasting beer in the world.
I’d recommend Sapporo Akahoshi.
Suntory also makes beer, but I wouldn’t really recommend it. I find their beer too sour. Their whisky, though, is fucking delicious. You should try YAMAZAKI.
Drinking whisky diluted with water from a plastic bottle is hardcore.
There are way too many brands that just don’t taste good.
But a lot of Japanese people will drink Suntory “Kakubin” from a plastic bottle as a highball.
I don’t know if people call it a “highball” overseas, but basically, it’s whisky mixed with soda water.
That’s what this whisky is made for: highballs. And it’s fucking good that way.
Hakkaisan, Dassai, and Koshi-no-Kanbai are all famous Japanese sake brands.
Drinking them straight from the tokkuri without pouring them into an ochoko?
That’s just fucking hopeless. That’s what we call Owatteru.
The bottled booze Aru-neko drinks in her room is called “Onikoroshi.”
It literally means “demon killer”—it’s supposedly strong enough to kill a demon.
There’s also a carton version of Onikoroshi. You can drink that one with a straw.
In the manga, our Best Girl Yaku-neko was drinking something called Strong Zero.
It’s vodka mixed with soda water. It’s pretty fucking strong.
We wash down a piping-hot Fami-Chiki with it and gain our freedom.
Strong Zero hits hard. Even a Japanese celebrity who got arrested for drugs warned us not to drink it.
That type of apartment is among the cheapest kinds of housing commonly found in Japan.
In central Tokyo, places like that can have shared bathrooms and toilets, but once you get as far out as Nyagamihara, you can find apartments like the one Yani-neko lives in.
University students who move to the city from the countryside sometimes live in places like these.
People who read Weekly Young Magazine live there too.
But it’s pretty rare for a manga author like Tatsuro to live in a place like this.
It’s about a 10-minute walk from Nyagamihara Station, and I’d guess the rent and maintenance fee come to around ¥30,000 a month. That’s about $200 a month.
As you can see, there’s nothing worth stealing, so we don’t even bother locking the door.
That’s just Nanmonee.
He’s speaking Satsuma dialect, a dialect from Kagoshima.
Kagoshima is the second-farthest prefecture from Tokyo.
Even Japanese people from other parts of Japan can’t understand what he’s saying.
That’s why he needs subtitles.
Kansai-neko’s Kansai dialect is easy enough for Japanese people to understand.
That’s because Japanese comedians often use Kansai dialect.
But Satsuma dialect? We have no fucking idea what they’re saying.
Satsuma dialect is so fucking difficult that even ninjas can’t infiltrate Satsuma.
During the Pacific War, Satsuma dialect was actually used as a code in communications between Japan and Germany. The US military intercepted one of these conversations, but couldn’t understand it.
It took them about two months to figure out that it was Satsuma dialect.
The person who eventually deciphered it was a Japanese American from Kagoshima who worked for U.S. Army intelligence.
This is a well-known story in Japan.
It even became the basis for a hugely popular TV drama.
This refers to Kodansha, the publisher of Weekly Young Magazine, where Yanineko is serialized.
The editors who came to raid them were from Shogakukan.
Shogakukan is famous for Shonen Sunday, one of their manga magazines. That’s the one that publishes *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End*.
Nichiyo = Sunday, Nichiyo-Gumi = Shonen Sunday editors = Shogakukan.
Afternoon is one of Kodansha’s manga magazines.
Yanineko sometimes features guest manga drawn by manga artists from Shogakukan and Shueisha.
Manga artists are already busy as hell, and yet other publishers still come asking them to draw manga for them.
You get what that means, right?
Kouji Kumeta, the creator of Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, is portrayed this way because he frequently moved between Shogakukan and Kodansha.
That’s why we’re allowed to make fun of Kumeta like that.
By the way, Kodansha was actually attacked by a gang of yakuza once.
That yakuza was named Takeshi Kitano. Fucking terrifying.
This is the store where Yaku-neko (best girl) and Kansai-neko went to buy clothes for Yani-neko.
It’s actually Fashion Center Shimamura.
We Japanese don’t buy expensive shit like Uniqlo or MUJI.
We all wear clothes from Shimamura.
It’s insanely cheap, so if you’re traveling to Japan, don’t even bother bringing clothes. Just buy them here.
They have everything from kids’ clothes to larger sizes, so you’re covered.
Most of those weird English T-shirts you see Japanese people wearing can be found here.
Then again, only a fucking crazy person would stick a half-smoked cigarette straight into their pocket like that.
That glass bottle is a “One Cup Ozeki”, a type of sake.
It’s famous for being the drink of alcoholics, and it’s also the most famous working man’s ashtray in Japan.
But don’t fucking use it like that, okay? Sort your fucking trash properly.
You can only use a “One Cup Ozeki” as an ashtray in Nyagamihara.
Sagamihara and Nyagamihara are about as different as New York and Gotham City, so don’t get them mixed up.
“One Cup Ozeki” is sold pretty much everywhere in Japan.
It tastes great when you take off the lid and heat it up in the microwave.
A lot of Japanese people sit by the river and drink it when they’ve lost all their money betting on horse races.
When you buy a horse racing ticket, make sure you leave enough money to go to Saizeriya afterward.
It’s a pretty typical Japanese family home for Shizue’s generation, with the father working as a salaryman and the mother being a full-time housewife.
In the suburbs, about a 15-minute walk from a train station, you should be able to buy a house like that.
It’ll cost you a shitload of money, though. Enough to spend your whole life working hard to pay it off.
The yard is a little bigger than usual, so maybe this place is even farther out in the suburbs.
Japanese homes have air conditioners in every room too.
Japanese summers are insanely hot and humid, so you fucking need them.
In Japan, you can get an air conditioner for only ¥100,000. That’s only about $650.
Japanese air conditioners are insanely energy-efficient.
You can leave them running all day and your electricity bill barely goes up.
Japanese homes are small, so the AC works really well too.
Pretty fucking practical, if you ask me.
Of course you’d put one in every room, right?
I’d go with Kirigamine.
It’s supposed to mean something really fucking stinky and nasty.
It doesn’t have any specific meaning.
It’s a made-up word created by combining kanji with mostly unpleasant meanings.
It’s like something a chuuni kid would come up with for the name of a special move.
邪 Ja – evil, wicked
糞 Kuso – shit, excrement
腐 Bu – rotten, decayed
毒 Bu – poison, toxic
羅 Ra – for phonetic and visual reasons
“Tore-daka” means getting a lot of good shots when you’re filming something.
It’s a word often used by people who shoot videos.
“Moré” means Hame-neko peed herself. Well, you know what I mean.
So “Moré-daka” means you managed to film a lot of that happening.
It’s just a pun because “Tore-daka” and “Moré-daka” sound similar.
Higuma-don is a famous monster based on a higuma.
A higuma is a huge brown bear found in Hokkaido.
It’s the largest bear in Japan.
Higuma-don’s a character from The World Is Mine, a manga from about 29 years ago that had a cult following in Japan.
“Don” means a big shot.
The “Don” here has nothing to do with things like katsu-don or kaisen-don.
Saigou-don, a famous samurai and revolutionary from Satsuma, is a well-known example. He’s a hero in Kagoshima.
There’s a statue of Saigou-don in Ueno Park.
If you call a big shot from Kagoshima “Don,” like “Sato-don” or “Yamada-don,” he’ll be happy. But be careful—it’s only used for men.
When Higuma-don comes ashore in Aomori, he’s about the size of Godzilla.
After being captured, he grows so huge while being transported by sea that he becomes big enough to fill the Pacific Ocean.
That’s what Aru-neko meant when she said Kansai-neko’s jokes had gotten smaller in scale than before.
But wait, this manga is 29 years old, isn’t it?
Makes you wonder if Yani-neko and the other young women are really as young as they say they are.
That’s a wrestling move Yaku-neko used on Hame-neko.
It’s the kind of move kids use when they play-wrestle.
Kinnikuman’s moves are way too dangerous, so kids stick to moves like Denki-Anma when they play-wrestle.
So be extremely careful when you use it.
The trick is to do it without actually hurting the other person.
The person on the receiving end is supposed to give up.
But come on, adults don’t normally do this kind of thing.
Do it as an adult, and you’ll spend the rest of your life being called Prisoner No.12.
This is what we call a “Kei-tora” in Japan.
This is the monster Trump and Obama called a non-tariff barrier.
It’s basically a micro truck.
You could think of it as Japan’s version of a pickup truck.
You can buy one from pretty much any Japanese automaker.
Long drives can be rough, but if you only drive for an hour a day, it’s the perfect partner.
It looks cheap as hell, but it’s actually cheap as hell too.
It’s one of the toughest vehicles out there, even among famously durable Japanese cars.
They’re insanely useful and are mainly used by delivery drivers and farmers, but you can even use them for drifting.
It does pretty well even on unpaved roads. There are 4WD models, too.
Modifying them for specific jobs is basically the norm.
Fruit farmers cut the roof off so they can harvest while driving.
Delivery companies put a tarp over the bed to keep their cargo dry.
Construction workers turn them into dump trucks.
Drifters soup up the engine for more power.
Of course, even the Japanese Self-Defense Forces use them.
See how fucking awesome Kei-tora are?
Tesla is the best-selling EV brand in Japan, and yet they don’t sell the Cybertruck here.
You get it? Elon Musk got scared shitless by Japan’s Kei-tora culture. Like Hame-neko.
I literally just came up with that theory, though.
That’s how fucking awesome Kei-tora are.
When people think of Japan’s ultimate car, they probably think of the Nissan GT-R or the Toyota Land Cruiser.
But the truth is, the “Kei-tora” is the ultimate. The king of them all.
If people find out about Kei-tora, it’ll take over the whole world. That would be a nightmare.
Maybe only Japanese people could sleep through a situation like that.
In Forza Horizon 6, this is basically the 1994 Honda Acty.
It’s fucking cool, so give one a drive.
That’s what we call users of Yahoo! Chiebukuro.
Yahoo! Chiebukuro is a website where you can ask questions about things you’re curious about and get answers from other users.
The opinions there are so fucking extreme, you’d think they were doing some kind of comedy contest.
It’s even worse than 2channel. 2channel is relatively sane by comparison.
Yahoo! is the same way with the comments on their news articles.
We Japanese must go fucking crazy whenever we see the word “Yahoo.”
Both are huge platforms for spreading abusive and defamatory posts, and they’re monitored by the government.
This was a mission Japan sent to China when China was called Sui.
It was partly for diplomacy, but Japan also sent people there to learn from this powerful country.
That was more than 1,400 years ago.
The most famous person on these missions was a guy named Ono-no-Imoko, so I’m basically going, “Imoko? Kenzuishi?”
Imoko Satoh and Ono-no-Imoko are both written as 妹子 in Japanese.
There’s one funny story about Ono-no-Imoko.
Prince Shōtoku gave Ono-no-Imoko a letter for the Sui emperor.
It said Japan was “the land where the sun rises,” and the Sui emperor was fucking furious when he read it.
Apparently, Imoko lost the emperor’s reply on the way back.
He never told the Japanese government that the emperor was fucking pissed.
But hey, it worked out. The world was still a much bigger place back then, and Japan and China were far apart.
Now that’s a guy who knew how to do his job.
By the way, the missions Japan sent to China when it was ruled by the Tang dynasty were called Kentoushi.
He’s probably the most famous poet in Japan.
Even a reasonably smart elementary school kid would know who he is.
The haiku master. He lived about 300 years ago.
Kawai-Sora was his disciple who traveled with him on his journey.
Their travel records are surprisingly detailed, but they covered so much ground so quickly that maybe they really were ninjas.
Matsu means “pine”, but it’s also a homophone of “matsu”, meaning “to wait.”
On old 2channel, people used to add an “o” at the end of words, so it became something like “Matsuo.”
The younger 2channel users add “Clemens” instead, so you get something like “Matte-Clemens.”
The suspicion that she’s lying about her age is getting stronger.
You might be thinking, “Wait, isn’t ‘matte’ completely different from ‘matsu’?”
Japanese people just go by the sound and casually switch between “matsu,” “matte,” and whatever sounds right.
Don’t sweat the details.
The collection of poems he wrote is called Oku-no-Hosomichi.
“Bakusoku” means insanely fast — like ninja fast.
So it’s Baokusoku-no-Hosomichi — the Super-Speedy Narrow Road.
Fucking hilarious, right?
Why the hell am I explaining such a shitty joke?
“Yani-neko aruaru” is totally ripped off from a famous comedian.
It’s a lyric everyone knows.
Though I’m not so sure about the part where it says Yani-neko doesn’t stink down there.
She probably just smells less bad by comparison, because her breath is so damn foul.
It’s the dark flea market of the internet.
You can buy pretty much anything there.
Game consoles that are supposedly sold out everywhere, camera equipment that police officers somehow managed to sell off, prizes people stole from their part-time jobs — Mercari has gotten into trouble over stuff like this time and time again.
You can even buy girls’ high school uniforms.
There have even been stories about some very studious middle-aged guys buying up collections of old entrance exam books from women’s universities.
