Just look at Apple’s infamous headphone jack-eliminating AirPods, for example.

However, one plug that device makers have continually struggled to remove is the one that supplies the gadget with power. The era of wireless mobile device charging has been “right around the corner” for the better part of a decade but will Google’s latest foray into Qi-enabled charging technology finally be the popular push that brings wireless power transfers into the mainstream?

Wireless charging works using the same physics principles that generate inductive heating effects. Basically, you can generate an electromagnetic field which, in turn, enables the transfer of energy captured between metallic objects located within the field.

When you’re heating a pot full of water, for example, you’re simply pulling electrical energy from the stove up to the metallic coil imprinted on the bottom of the pot. This heats up the pot and boils the liquid inside. Same basic idea applies to batteries. In that case, the charger employs an induction coil to generate an oscillating magnetic field. That field feeds energy into the target device’s battery via electromagnetic induction through a similar copper coil. Essentially, it’s the same as if you’re pulling energy from the stove but, instead of dumping that potential power into a pot of tepid water, you’re dropping it into a battery.

Google’s efforts are far from the first time that mobile device manufacturers have attempted to power their phones and tablets through near-field energy transfers. In fact, the wireless charging revolution technically started back in 2009 with the release of the Palm Pre. The Apple iPhone 8 and X already offer wireless charging capabilities (using the same Qi charging standard), as did the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and 8, the Sony Xperia XZ3, and Blackberry Priv with similar standards before them. The problem, of course, is that none of the wireless charging systems that have come before have met with much commercial success. That could well change with the recent (re)emergence of the Qi standard.

Inductive charging does come with a couple of other drawbacks though. For one, the process is slower than conventional charging, on account of the massive amounts of energetic (read: heat) waste that the process generates. That is, these devices get HOT when you leave them on their charging pads for more than a few minutes at a time. Normally that isn’t a safety issue but then you find yourself on a commercial flight holding a Galaxy Note 7 with 6 percent battery left and you’ve got yourself a choice to make.

What’s more, inductive charging doesn’t work through metal currently. That means that inductive-compatible phones must have either a glass or plastic back in order to successfully access wireless charging stations (hence the Pixel 3’s new backside). The size of the inductive coils also impact their effective range. Since the ones on a Qi charging pad are generally only a couple inches across, their charging range is severely limited. But even larger coils are prone to low power transfer efficiencies — typically only effectively delivering around 40 percent of the total energy supplied (according to a 2007 study by, MIT physics professor Marin Soljačić).

Yet, despite the technology’s numerous, well-documented shortcomings, there is still a solid chance for it to find mainstream success, especially given Apple’s stated support for the Qi standard. But whether Apple pays anything more than lip service remains to be seen. On one hand, both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are Qi compatible, though such charging accessories were noticeably absent from the company’s most recent product event. On the other hand, a sizeable portion of the world’s population had to go out and buy new headphones because of a single design decision by Apple so that support carries weight should the company choose to wield it.

Google, unfortunately, doesn’t appear to have the social capital necessary to shift the public’s behavior in a similar manner. So if we are doing this whole wireless charging thing, it’ll most likely happen only after it receives Apple’s embrace.

The promise: Lithium-oxygen batteries represent one of the more promising paths toward that end. They could boost energy density by an order of magnitude above conventional lithium-ion batteries—in theory, at least. In a paper published today in Science, researchers at the University of Waterloo identified ways of addressing some of the major hurdles to converting that potential into commercial reality.

The challenge: A critical problem has been that as a lithium-oxygen battery discharges, oxygen is converted into superoxide and then lithium peroxide, reactive compounds that corrode the battery’s components over time. That, in turn, limits its recharging ability—and any real-world utility.

The advance: To get around the problem, researchers switched from a carbon cathode to one made of nickel oxide and supported by a stainless steel mesh. They also used molten salt for the electrolyte—the part of the battery that allows positively charged ions to move between the electrodes—and raised the battery’s operating temperature to 150 ˚C.

Those steps made it possible to achieve about three times the number of charging cycles as earlier lithium-oxygen efforts. The researchers also managed to increase the energy per unit of mass by more than 50 percent.

“This Long Lasting Lithium- Oxygen Battery discovery highlights immense opportunities …. to enable new battery technologies that can potentially rival lithium-ion batteries and other storage technologies,” MIT researchers write in an accompanying piece.

Wait for it …: But progress in the battery field is incredibly slow, requiring many years for promising advances in the lab to move into the commercial arena (see “Advance doubles the longevity of high-energy electric-car batteries.”) In particular, these batteries would still need to achieve far more life cycles to compete with products in the market today.

Linda Nazar, a coauthor of the study, stresses that the researchers haven’t provided a practical design for commercial production of lithium-oxygen batteries, which she says is more than 15 years away.

“We may be infinity from commercialization—as our Lithium- Oxygen Batterybattery is designed—but more importantly this concept will hopefully lead to new designs that may get us there,” she said in an e-mail.

According to permits Tesla submitted to Fremont city officials (obtained by Teslarati), the all-electric automaker plans to add Model Y production lines at its lone U.S. car factory. In addition, Tesla will make upgrades to its paint shop and body-in-white lines. The paint shop upgrades come as no surprise since CEO Elon Musk has said publicly that it’s in need of improvement.

The Tesla Model Y had just come to market and was a month ahead of original plans when Tesla was forced to shut down its plant due to the coronavirus pandemic. Deliveries of the all-electric crossover started on March 13. We have no way of knowing how many reservation-holders took delivery, but we do know that Tesla isn’t building the Model Y or any other cars in the States at this time. We also know the automaker posted record production and delivery numbers for Q1 2020.

Once Tesla is given the go-ahead to restart production, it will need to be on the fast track to try to make up for weeks, if not months, of idle time. According to our friends at Teslarati, the permits suggest that the automaker will use separate production lines for the Model 3 and Model X to speed up overall plant production.

The source also points to rerouting underground fire mains. Teslarati explains that this is likely Tesla’s solution to prove it can adequately handle stormwater drainage for an upcoming, fifth assembly line.

We already heard about the contractors, and starting from Monday the company will try to save some costs through the reduction of salaries by up to 30%.

“This is a shared sacrifice across the company that will allow us to progress during these challenging times,” Tesla said in the memo.

In the U.S. the pay cut will be:

  • 30% for vice president or above
  • 20% for directors
  • 10% for everyone else

The pay cuts are expected to last until the end of Q2 2020, but it’s not certain.

Those who can’t work from home will be furloughed, which means no pay at all, although they will at least keep healthcare benefits.

The good news is that the company plans to resume production in the U.S. on May 4 (gradually of course).

“Wage adjustments and equity grants will be put on hold, according to the memo. The pay cuts are expected to last until the end of the second quarter and those furloughed are likely to be asked to return on May 4, Tesla told employees.”

The measures outside the U.S. will be similar according to the article, although we also saw a report from Moneyball that in China, where the Tesla Gigafactory 3 remains fully operational, the measures will be different.

“Measures for #China region will be different, we will issue a formal statement a bit later, Tesla replied commenting on announced 10%-30% pay cuts for its employees amid efforts to cut costs.”

If you’re in Europe and are looking to buy a small all-electric crossover, you might want to wait until next year when Renault is reportedly going to launch just such a model. According to L’argus, it is designed to slot above the popular Zoe in the manufacturer’s EV lineup and offer superior range.

The source says it will ride on Renault’s CMF/EV platform that the manufacturer used to underpin the Morphoz concept that should have debuted at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. No technical specs were mentioned, other than the range it’s expected to have, which is up to 600 km.

Automakers are focusing on alternative fuel technologies and even lifestyles, a new pattern that will evidently change the auto industry as we know it. It’s clearly a serious trend when even muscle car automaker Dodge is going electric, changing its game plan and optimize the future EV batteries is huge – Just like we are doing with the hybrid Dodge Charger. Now that’ll be something. With the auto industry finally at the tipping point on hybrid and electric vehicles, one wonders if the technology is also finally there.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has been dipping into alternative fuel the most with its Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that can run on electricity alone or in tandem with the electric motor and the gasoline engine. The newest addition is Jeep with plug-in hybrid variants of their entire lineup. A plug-in hybrid variant of the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass, both powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine and an electric motor showed up at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

Possibly the most interesting was the Mitsubishi Dendo Drive House (DDH). It’s a home equipped with solar panels to collect energy that is then converted into electricity and stored in a home battery, where it is then shared with the rest of the house. A two-part system, excess energy can also be transmitted into a PHEV for storage, be it the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV or the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, with installations available by 2020.

Then there was Kia Motors, who had more of a concept called “Imagine by Kia”. The presentation was more focused on the future of alternative fuel and electric vehicles. That begs the question, “What about it?” We know automakers have been shy to get in on the ground floor with electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids because of how expensive they are to make and the handicap on driving range. Today, most electric vehicles (EVs) have yet to be able to travel on a single battery charge as far as a traditional vehicle can on a full tank of gasoline. It’s a problem battery makers have yet to solve.

Now comes the research. Traditional electronics makers, car companies, and tech giants (including Panasonic, Samsung, LG Chem, Toshiba, Google, BMW, and Dyson) are working on ways to make lithium-ion batteries more powerful, able to store more energy and store more of it faster, while still being safe. Several companies are currently tinkering with the possibilities, and the popular choice is to make batteries denser.

“It’s the right technology; we just need to make it do a little bit more…To get a battery to be denser, it introduces new challenges.” – Rick Fioravanti, an energy-industry consultant with Quanta Technology

A large problem of lithium-ion batteries today is heat. When charging a vehicle, the ions’ voyage between the anode and a cathode of a lithium-ion battery creates resistance, mostly in the form of heat, and the faster the charge, the more resistance. This leads to a battery that heats up too quickly that can catch fire or explode. While some companies are focusing on increasing energy storage, there are other companies working on safety. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, the founder and CEO of Cadenza Innovation, is addressing the heat issue by focusing on the outside of the power cell. BMW supplier Sila Nanotechnologies, one in a collection of startups is working on the various aspects of battery tech and the materials used to make them to increase energy storage by 20 percent or more.

Some other key players include Fisker in Los Angeles, Panasonic in Tokyo, Contemporary Amperex technology (CATL) in China, Dyson in England, QuantumScape in California, and Romeo Power, also in Los Angeles. All of these companies are focusing on developing batteries, trying to crack the code of making denser, more efficient batteries, while still keeping them safe and inexpensive. The cost is still a problem to tackle – the same batteries that power an iPhone are the same in a battery, but there are about 10,000 more battery cells in an electric vehicle than a smartphone. We all know how expensive iPhones are, so just think of the cost to put 10,000 into one vehicle.

As it currently stands, many automakers are stepping forward, but in the end, they’ve got a problem to face. We’ll keep an eye out for other startups and any breakthroughs with electric vehicles. Join the discussion on NowCar social media.

Valid results are best obtained from a recognized battery test provider or laboratory. We can recommend several test houses. Experienced test labs will perform the ANSI tests as specified, providing independent, indisputable data for marketing and product improvement confirmation. Yes there are , but they are not as accurate and produce highly irregular results. If you choose to do your own testing at home, they must be controlled by running several different devices and many many test repetitions in order to make positive statistical battery comparisons. This can be very time consuming and expensive. These tests should also be done with intermittent use cycles to be valid such as turning the device on for one hour per day, like the ANSI tests. Without sufficient testing, the data is usually misleading.

We recommend that you always use target devices such as toys, cameras, and flashlights and use multiple devices of the same model (at least 3). Battery powered products can vary as much as 25% among devices of the same make and model, more than the common variance among battery brands. A key issue with testing batteries in this fashion, is that across different brands and models of devices. This type of testing also requires several repetitions of tests of each battery brand in each battery operated device.

6. What are the continuous use alkaline battery test ?

The continuous use alkaline battery test ( continuous drain test or constant battery burn test) is when you switch on a device and leave it on to compete exhaustion. Batteries should never be tested in devices under continuous power drain. This is not a way that a majority of consumers use batteries. As recognized in all of the regulated ANSI tests, the battery power is drained intermittently, such as 1 1/2 hour per day, to more accurately reflect the way people use the product. Most alkaline batteries are not designed for continuous high power drain use, such as a high wattage LED light. Most batteries are formulated for pulsed power and many daily use periods which is most consistent with regular consumer usage. So, product device testing should always include intermittent drain test schedules in cycles.

Our Materials

Our Procedure

We tested each of the new flashlights by using two test batteries. We then tape labeled each regular flashlight with the battery type brand name and put the different batteries types in each of the marked flashlights.

Before starting the test we will turn on each flashlight at the same time. Them we left them on overnight. We logged the time that we turned the flashlights to the on position. We watched the flashlights until they went out and record the time period. When one flashlight goes out before the other, we insert two more of the same battery types and just waited.

Our Variables

Different brand of batteries is our variable. We controlled the condition of each flashlight.

Results

Our experiment results quickly showed that the Rayovac Brand of Alkaline Batteries outlasted all of the other batteries. The Eveready brand battery lasted only 6 hours and 35 minutes and the Duracell brand lasted 15 hours. The Energizer brand lasted 22 hours and 15 minutes total.

And the big winner: The Rayovac lasted 24 1/2 hours.

The Eveready brand flashlight light went out very quickly and had to replace the batteries quite often. We also observed that when the Eveready brand was going dead it went dim very slowly.

Our Conclusions

Our hypothesis was absolutely wrong tae Duracell last the longest. We quickly came to the conclusion the the data supports that the RAYOVAC BRAND last longer than Duracell and Energizer. this also proves that even thought Duracell costs more, they do not last the longest.

We suggest to purchase Rayovac over all other brand of batteries. We hoped this helped you out and may save you money in the future. Our goal in conducting the test was to find the best battery for the money and to provide our customers with the most bang for the buck.

Q: I just bought rechargeable the batteries. What do I need to do before first using them?

First you must fully charge them. Please note that for new NiMH batteries, it is often necessary to cycle them at least three to five times before they reach peak performance. Battery cycling can be achieved simply by using the batteries as you normally would and then recharging them.

Q: How long can the rechargeable batteries hold their charge if I leave them on the shelf (shelf-life)?

At room temperature, NiMH batteries will self-discharge in around 30 to 60 days, depending on environmental condition. In other words, if you leave the batteries on the shelf for more than 30 – 60 days, you should recharge the batteries before using them. Q: My camera came with 1200mAh Batteries. Can I still use 1800mAh rechargeable batteries or will they hurt my camera.

Yes, you can use the 1800 mAh batteries. 1800mAh is the capacity of a battery, not its strength. Capacity is how much capacity energy a battery holds once it is fully charged. The more capacity, the longer a battery will last in any given application. Voltage is the strength. Rechargeable batteries actually develop around 1.4 to 1.45 volts when fully charged even though they are marked as 1.2V.

Q: How many times can I recharge my rechargeable batteries?

The number of times you can recharge your batteries will depend on drain rate, battery care, etc. In general, under desirable conditions, NiMH batteries can last up to 500 recharges. In absolute best conditions, NiMH batteries can last up to 1000 recharges.

Q: How much performance improvement can I expect using NiMH rechargeable batteries instead of other batteries on my high drain device like a digital camera? 

First: NiMH batteries are rechargeable upwards of 500 to a 1000 times. This means you can use the batteries over and over again. If you are familiar with “rechargeable alkaline” (which are significantly lower in price), their life is only about 50 recharges. Here is a List of Battery Terms.

: NiMH batteries are designed for power-intensive applications. NiMH batteries maintain their high power during most of its usage. In other words, NiMH batteries maintain a high and consistent voltage during most of its discharge. On the other hand, for alkaline batteries, their voltage drops rapidly when used in power-intensive applications such as a digital camera. This explains why you can only take 20-30 pictures using alkaline, while you can take up to 150-200 pictures using NiMH. Third: Capacity counts. NiMH batteries are rated in “mAh”, an acronym for “milli-ampere hours”. This number tells you how long the batteries can last under a certain power consumption. The higher the better for this number.

Q: How often should I condition my rechargeable batteries?

Generally speaking, NiMH batteries do not suffer from the “memory effect” and thus do not require conditioning. Nevertheless, to ensure top performance, conditioning is recommended at once for every ten charges. For Nickel Cadmium (NiCD) batteries, conditioning is recommended every time you charge your batteries.

Q: What is the difference between NiMH batteries and “rechargeable alkaline” batteries?

Recently the market has introduced a new type of supposedly affordable rechargeable alkaline batteries. However, they do not compare with NiMH rechargeable technology. The key difference is that rechargeable alkaline batteries can be recharged up to 50 times. NiMH can be recharged up to 500 times.

Q: I have not used my NiMH rechargeable batteries in several months and they are not holding their charge. How can I fix this?

NiMH batteries will self-discharge if left unused. Generally, within 30 to 60 days, batteries will become completely drained. When using them, you will need to first recharge them. After extended storage, you may need to condition (using the conditioning feature on PowerEx chargers like the MH-C204F) the batteries several times to regain nominal performance.

Q: I plan to use the NiMH batteries as a backup power. How long will they hold their charge?


This is commonly referred to as the “shelf life” of batteries. Q: I recently received a dozen AA NiMH batteries that I ordered from you. Today I put four of the batteries in a charger for the first time. The charger came with my digital camera, and was made by Olympus specifically for NiMH rechargeable batteries. I was startled to find that as the batteries charged they got almost too hot to hold. I know that with other types of batteries, ANY perceptible heating during charging is a sign of possible battery damage. I wonder if you can shed any light on what is happening here. Is my charger defective, or badly designed, or is this normal for NiMH cells?

This is pretty much normal. NiMH batteries can reach as high as 130 degrees during a charge cycle as pointed out by Energy. The amount of discharge and of course the rate of charge will affect this.

This is why we recommend the following

1. Do not close the cover ( if your NiMH Battery Charger has one ) while your batteries are charging. It is best to allow any heat to dissipate as much as possible.
2. You also may wish to use a small fan to help keep the batteries cool, and prevent excessive heat build up during charging. List of Battery Term Glossary.

Q: Do NiMH batteries really require a special charger (other than those designed to recharge Ni-Cd batteries, or is that just a marketing ploy by the manufacturers of the chargers? I looked at a charger that has separate settings for both Ni-Cd and Ni-MH batteries, and it appears that the mA output is the same for both settings.

Newer NiMH battery chargers are designed to specifically charge NiMH and NiCD chemistries. However most of the older NiCD chargers were not designed to charge any other battery chemistries such as NiMH since they were unavailable at that time these chargers were designed. That is why many of the newer NiMH/NiCD chargers are capable of automatically charging both types, while others have a switch.

There is more than just mA ratings involved when charging different battery chemistries (rate of charge, length of charge, type of charge. etc…) While it is true that some NiCD chargers can be used to charge NiMH batteries you must consider the following points if you decide to attempt to charge your NiMH batteries using an older NiCD charger.

1. Improper charging or using a charger that is not specifically designed to charge any rechargeable battery can cause their useful life to be shortened dramatically or in some cases actually damage them permanently. We have even had some individuals attempt to charge rechargeable alkaline batteries in some of our chargers and were surprised when they exploded.

2. Although a NiCD charger may seem to be charging NiMH batteries fine, this is not usually the case. NiMH chargers are specifically designed to prevent Hydrogen bubbles from forming on the battery plates and of course to charge them to their full potential. List of Battery Term Glossary.
